A catch-up with our apprentices... Last September, Pendle Leisure Trust recruited eight apprentices to work and learn across the Trust’s centres in a variety of roles, including beauty therapy, lifeguarding, catering, marketing and finance. Six months on, we catch up with a couple of them to see how they’ve been getting on! What do you do as part of your job role? I use Excel to update figures from across all Pendle Leisure Trust sites. I oversee transactions that have been made across our centres and I am also involved in processing purchase and sales invoices on a daily basis. What made you choose a career in Finance? I have always been interested in figures and after studying Maths at A Level, I decided I wanted to take my interest further. Why did you choose an apprenticeship instead of university? I love the fact that I am working and learning on the job and getting first-hand experience. I’ve never wanted to go to university. Are you enjoying it? Very much so! I enjoy what I do. I love the environment I work in and having a laugh with my colleagues.
Ryan Age: 19 Finance Apprentice

What do you do as part of your job role? I work with the Marketing Team to create promotional materials, such as posters and flyers for our centres, as well as create adverts, write press releases and keep social media websites up-to-date. What made you choose a career in Marketing? I have always loved graphic design and have done quite a bit of work experience in the past with graphic design, which I enjoyed, so this apprenticeship is perfect for me. Why did you choose an apprenticeship instead of university? I’ve always liked the idea of apprenticeships and have never wanted to go to university. Are you enjoying it? I love it! I’ve made some really good friends and really enjoy the variety of the job!

Pendle Wavelengths is going for gold… Again! Last year Pendle Wavelengths was voted the best leisure centre in the North West in the prestigious Members’ Choice Health Club of the Year Awards. This year staff are aiming for the top slot for the second year running. These are the only awards in the industry where winners are selected purely on the feedback from the people that use the facilities - the members themselves. They measure the quality, customer service and value for money of the facilities and are open to all private health clubs, gyms and leisure centres in the UK. Now members have until May 30th to complete an online questionnaire rating Pendle Wavelengths and Inside Spa on their facilities. Last year the Nelson leisure centre beat off some fierce competition and pipped Metro Fitness in Stockport and Energie Fitness in Wilmslow to the post to take the title in the North West category. Simon Brown, MD of the awards, explains: “Belonging to a good facility is a rewarding experience. Members probably spend more time there than they realise and it becomes an integral part of their lifestyle, providing them with a haven from their frantic day-to-day existence and at the same time helping them to tackle life in a healthier, more productive way.” Pendle Wavelengths Centre Manager, Iqbal Quammer, added: “We were so proud and thrilled to receive the award last year. The whole team at Wavelengths and Inside Spa work extremely hard to deliver a high standard of service and value for money. This award reiterates that most of the time we get it spot on!” You can vote by completing a few simple questions and ranking Pendle Wavelengths at www.healthclubawards.co.uk.

This year The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival celebrates its 25th Anniversary. And there are some great names lined-up for this amazing milestone, including Eric Burdon, Lucky Peterson, Eric Sardinas, Otis Grand, Mike Sanchez, The Yardbirds and Dr Feelgood. These Blues musicians – and hundreds more - will be performing throughout the four day event this August Bank Holiday weekend. Over the last two decades the Festival has grown in size and popularity with the amount of people who travel from the length and breadth of the UK, as well as Europe and the USA, to this tiny part of Lancashire to listen to every kind of Blues music. The calibre of the Festival was recognised last year when it was declared the Best Blues Festival in the European Blues Awards 2013. With more than 600 artistes performing at nine official venues over four days, Colne’s Blues Festival is now a firm favourite with locals and visitors as THE place to be over the Bank Holiday weekend.

TALKS SHEPHERDS, FOLK, PUNK AND, OF COURSE, BOTTOM... Most of us know Ade Edmondson for his comedy characters – and more recently his cooking skills and stroll through The Dales, but did you know he could sing as well? No, me neither, until I heard he was coming to Colne with a group of mates to play punk songs on folk instruments! That can’t be right, I thought, so I spoke to him to find out how this bizarre combination had come about. Surely it wasn’t planned? “I bought a mandolin and started working on a few chords, playing songs I like from The Clash,” Ade said. “As soon as the tunes started to come together I thought that’s very different, I like that! I needed more instruments, so I persuaded a couple of friends who I knew were brilliant folk musicians to join in - and The Bad Shepherds were formed. That was six years ago. “We think the songs are better than people remember. And by playing them on folk instruments, you can really hear the words. Everyone thinks Punk music is all about jumping up

and down, but really it has produced some of the best songs ever written.
which bizarrely involved a move to revive Bottom. When the idea for the new Bottom series came, we met and worked on it for a while, but pretty soon I realised it wasn’t what I wanted to do – it felt too much like treading the same path again.

Everyone thinks Punk mu sic is all about jumping up and down, but really it has produced some of the best songs ever wri tten.
“The most frequent comment from people who have heard us is, I never knew that song was about that! The most popular one being ‘Down In The Tube Station At Midnight’, which is “Instead I realised that what I really wanted to do was actually a ballad.” get together with The Bad Shepherds again. Why? Because I love the band. Because I love the sound The Bad Shepherds do songs by The Sex Pistols, we make. Because the best gigs I’ve ever done in The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, my life, in any art form – in terms of excitement and The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Squeeze and connection with an audience – have been with The others, even Kraftwerk. Bad Shepherds, so here we are…….” Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. The Shepherds have given the songs a kind of Celtic feel and thrown in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occasionally they just thrash!

Six Pendle pensioners have proved you are never too old to learn. For they are part of a small group of parishioners from Holy Saviours RC Church in Nelson, who have just completed an Emergency First-aid Training Course. And two of them – Sheila Cooper and Doreen Batson - are aged 76 and 78! The Parish of The Good Shepherd is constantly promoting itself as a place of safety and well-being, so when it was suggested to have a few more first-aiders, nine volunteers stepped forward to attend the course which was partly sponsored by the parish. Karen Bracewell, Pendle Leisure Trust’s Training Manager, taught the small group everything they needed to know about emergency first-aid during a number of sessions in the church hall, and they all passed with flying colours. Ann Lang said: “It just goes to show you are never too old to learn something new. Of course it does help when you have a wonderfully caring teacher as Karen.”

Jars, Jars and more Jars... A philatelist collects stamps, a tegestologist collects beer mats, but what do you call a person who collects jars?..........Lewis (J)Garforth!! The Pendle Leisure Trust graphic designer is getting married in May and with an English Country Garden theme, he and his fiancée are using glass jars as a large part of the Reception decoration. “Well it was a lovely idea until we counted up just how many we would need - probably over 400. Even with six months to go, this was a daunting task. So I asked my colleagues at Colne Town Hall to help. The response has been unbelievable and we now have approaching 350 jars already! “As we didn’t give much thought to housing them up until the wedding, currently my car clinks at every turn, my desk drawers clink whenever I open them, whenever I move my feet under my desk I hear the familiar clink and my bed has started clinking from all the jars stored underneath it! “But, it was a very satisfying day though when we finished decorating our 100th jar, stood back and saw them all together, as this small glimpse of the final effect just proved that all the clinking and collecting will definitely be worth it in the end!”

The newest edition to our team may be decidedly more two dimensional than the others, but that doesn’t mean he has any less character! Originally designed to be a height chart for the 1.3m required to take on the high ropes course at Urban Altitude, we now love Archie so much we’ll definitely be seeing more of him in the future. We spoke to the designer at Pendle Leisure Trust who saw Archie through from initial sketches to completed character, asking where on earth do you start on a project like this? “I started by looking at the uniform of the Urban Altitude staff, like the helmet and the harness, and built Archie around that. I didn’t really have an image in my head of the finished product; he just seemed to develop himself. I originally saw him as a red head, but towards the end he became more of a sandy blonde.” If your child is looking to take on the high ropes challenge, come and find Archie at Pendle Leisure Centre Reception or Urban Altitude, to make sure they measure up!

Don’t take our word for it...
This is what people are saying about Aqua Gymfit following the launch at Pendle Leisure Centre: “What better way to spend an hour than in this fantastic new class? I thoroughly enjoyed it, great coaching tips and good instructor.” “I thought the Swimfit session was great. I loved the competitive side of it and the fact that it wasn’t just swimming lengths!” “I found the Swimfit session really good. The guy who took the group seemed very knowledgeable and kept the session very interesting. I thought it was better doing the group work rather than just swimming up and down the lanes, as that can be quite boring.” “My mum and I came to the Swimfit launch and really enjoyed it. It was great fun, great exercise and I think the combination of some techniques mixed with the gym session is a really good idea for a class, particularly for those who usually just swim up and down.”
“As a poor swimmer I was dreading this, but I said I’d have a go, so I did. I found it brilliant and not at all what I was expecting. The instructor took into account the different abilities of the group and adjusted his training to suit.”

Diary of a Weedy Kid - My progress so far... With his big day fast approaching, our groom-to-be discusses the pain, protein and perseverance required for his training sessions with PLT instructor Andy Pickard. I’m currently four months into my training, with two months to go, and slowly but surely I’m starting to see results. I’ve got used to my new routine now of clean eating and regular training sessions, and dare I say it, I’ve nearly got used to waking up aching every day! I am seeing little changes in the way I look and I’m getting the odd comment here and there about my arms looking better etc, which has definitely given me a confidence boost.
STATS:
Name: LEWIS GARFORTH Age: 20 Height: 5’ 11” Start Date: 6 NOV 2013 Goal Date: 10 MAY 2014 Start Weight: 11st 6lb Current Weight: 11st 8lb Starting Body Fat Percentage: 14% Current Body Fat Percentage: 8.7%
I think the most noticeable difference is how much fitter I am. When I started the training I thought I was pretty fit already, as I did a few sessions of low intensity cardio every week, but compared to what I do now I was basically a couch-potato! Now I’ve started running everyday and I do at least two sessions of high intensity cardio a week, which is usually hill sprints. I’m also finding myself enjoying exercise a lot more, as the more I do, the more I am able to do and I can push myself further.
“[I’m] enjoying exercise a lot more, as the more I do, the more I’m able to do and I can push myself further”
Andy has been an absolutely essential part of the process, as every week he tells me what and when I should be eating, what exercises I need to be doing and is always on hand to answer any questions. Quite a few times we’ve run into obstacles, such as my lower back hurting due to my muscles being too tight. Andy has altered my workout plan to cater for this, so now I can do the exercises without any pain or risk of injury. Visit the blog He’s constantly making me work harder and I imagine he’ll use the next two months to push my body to its limits. And I can’t wait!

Pendle Leisure Trust’s Sports Development Team has nominated four of its volunteers in the North West StreetGames Awards. The awards serve to highlight the excellent work being carried out by The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers across the country. Judges are looking for entrants that have really made a difference to their community - young people with a ‘can do’ attitude who have used the StreetGames Young Volunteers Programme as an opportunity to help other young people access and enjoy sport, as well as develop their own personal skills.
NOMINEES: Vinny Robinson - Unsung Hero Frankie Parkinson - Unsung Hero Courtney Wright - Best New Volunteer ICE Club Volunteers - Best Volunteer Team Unsung Hero - Highlighting the achievements of a young person who has demonstrated commitment to the project, others and the wider community. Best New Volunteer - A volunteer that has demonstrated commitment and dedication within the first six months of their role, going above and beyond expectations. Best Volunteer Team - Recognising the hard work and dedication of a group of young volunteers who have delivered a specific project/activity/event. Clive Escreet, Sports Development Manager, said: “It is always hard to choose individuals to put forward for awards, as all of our volunteers give up so much of their own time to help out and encourage others to get involved and become more active. Mohammed Zubair Bashir winner of the North West Regional Volunteer of the Year (2013)
“It’s fantastic to have the volunteers working alongside our staff. The enthusiasm these young people bring to the sessions is invaluable and allows us to continue to deliver programmes in often challenging environments and with challenging young people. These sessions would not be possible without the help and dedication of these volunteers.
“We hope their hard work and dedication will be recognised in these StreetGames Awards.” 19
