JUNE 6th - 7th

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MOD The Who and The Kinks were formed in 1964, Small Faces in 1965 and Love Affair in 1966, playing in clubs across the UK, such as The Marquee and The Flamingo in London and The Nelson Imp.

Then came ‘The Mod Revival’ which started around the late 1970s, inspired by the 1979 film ‘Quadrophenia’ and modinfluenced bands such as The Jam, Secret Affair and Purple Hearts. Following this was Two Tone Ska music with bands such as Bad Manners with Buster Bloodvessal, Madness and The Specials.

This June Pendle Leisure Trust and Doc Redeye Events bring a brand new two-day music extravaganza to Colne. The North by North-West Festival will celebrate 50 years of Mod music at the Muni Theatre. So there will be no need to travel to Brighton, Margate or Clacton to take part in any Golden Anniversary celebrations, because this Mod invasion will feature some of the most loved musicians associated with this era and they will be performing right on your doorstep! From The Jam, featuring Bruce Foxton, will headline the opening night with some of the great Mod anthems. They will be supported by The 45’s and The Universal.

Saturday’s line-up features The Itch, The Kast Off Kinks, featuring former members of The Kinks, The Small Fakers, Steve Ellis’ Love Affair who will be performing, among others, their most famous tune “Everlasting Love” and Bad Manners, featuring Buster Bloodvessel, will round off what promises to be a fantastic weekend and a musical trip down memory lane. There will also be a mini and scooter rally through the town centre just before the music starts, which should provide quite a spectacle and take visitors back to the time when Mods ruled. So, dig out your Vespa or Lambretta from the bottom of the garden, get the classic mini out of storage, put on your Ben Sherman, Fred Perry or Harrington Jacket and join all the 21st Century Mods at Colne, for the first ever North by North-West Festival.

Gym instructor overcomes open-heart surgery to take on Marathon! Sitting across from an average, healthy, gym instructor who has just completed the Manchester Marathon, it’s hard to believe that less than a year ago, he was having open heart surgery to replace a valve in his heart! I caught up with 27-year-old Danny Kelly, one of Pendle Leisure Centre’s gym instructors, to see how he found the run up to the Marathon after such a major operation.

When did you have your surgery and what was involved?

I had an aortic valve in my heart replaced last April as a result of a heart condition I have had since I was born.

How long was the recovery process?

I spent one week in hospital and went through six weeks cardiac rehabilitation after that. I started training properly nine months after my operation and had a heart rate monitor so that I did not do anything too strenuous.

So you were fit enough to run a Marathon after just 3 months of training?

I designed a 12 week plan to gradually build up my stamina and endurance for the race. I stuck to it and because it’s boring running on your own for 17 miles, I had a lot of support from work colleagues and gym members who came running on the long distance training runs with me. That really helped me to keep focused and motivated.

Why did you want to do the Marathon and what charity did you choose?

Initially, I wanted to run the Marathon in 2013 to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer, as my mum was diagnosed in 2008. She has now fully recovered after receiving excellent care. However, because of my surgery I had to defer my entry to this year’s event. So the run was primarily to raise money for Breast Cancer, but also a massive personal achievement as it was only 11 months after my surgery. I finished the Marathon in 4 hours 15 minutes.

Are you planning on doing the Marathon again or any other challenges?

I don’t really have any other aspirations to do another Marathon, however me and my girlfriend have just done the 10k in Manchester. We chose the charity ‘CRY’ which helps to raise awareness of cardiac risk in the young.

How much money did you raise?

I aimed to raise £250, however the response was amazing and I raised a total of £961. Friends and family supported me, as well as a lot of Pendle Leisure Centre gym members. Interview by Amy Hindman

Dying for a dip this Summer? Pendle Leisure Trust is teaming up with our local emergency services to make children think twice about swimming in dangerous open water.

Swimming Lessons Swimming is an important skill that could save a child’s life. 10-week courses are held at all Pendle Leisure Trust swimming pools. Contact your local centre for more details:

With the school holidays fast approaching, the temptation to swim in reservoirs, rivers and lakes can be strong for many young people, especially as the weather starts to get warmer. However, with unseen dangers such as under-currents, sudden depth changes and underwater debris, what may seem the perfect way to cool off can quickly escalate into a serious situation. Such was the case with 13-year-old Dylan Ramsay, who died while swimming at Hill Top Quarry, Chorley, in July 2011. Although an extremely fit and active young man, as well as a capable swimmer, Dylan jumped into the water and was unable to swim the short distance to safety.

Pendle Wavelengths, Nelson 01282 661717

In response to the rise in cases like Dylan’s, Pendle Leisure Trust is hosting a Drowning Prevention Week at the end of June, to help educate children from local primary schools on the dangers of swimming in outside water. In various hands-on sessions, the youngsters will learn numerous life-saving skills, including CPR and swimming techniques. Representatives from Pendle’s Police and Fire services will also be getting involved in the event, identifying the danger spots and issues that arouse last year around outside water.

West Craven Sports Centre, Barnoldswick 01282 666710

The week will provide invaluable training for children to keep with them throughout their lives, helping to make tragic cases like Dylan’s a thing of the past.

This year The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival celebrates its 25th Anniversary. And there are some great names lined-up for this amazing milestone, including Eric Burdon, Lucky Peterson, Eric Sardinas, Otis Grand, Mike Sanchez, The Yardbirds and Dr Feelgood. These Blues musicians – and hundreds more - will be performing at numerous venues throughout Colne town centre during the four day event this August Bank Holiday weekend. Over the last two decades the Festival has grown in size and popularity with the amount of people who travel from the length and breadth of the UK, as well as Europe and the USA, to this tiny part of Lancashire to listen to every kind of Blues music. The calibre of the Festival was recognised last year when it was declared the Best Blues Festival in the European Blues Awards 2013. With more than 600 artistes performing at eight official venues over four days, Colne’s Blues Festival is now a firm favourite with locals and visitors as THE place to be over the Bank Holiday weekend. As well as the International Stage, there will also be some popular favourites and new faces keeping the music going on the British Stage and the Acoustic Stage, as well as the five official roadhouses.

Don’t Miss Out!

Our Early Booking Offer could save you £22 on your Full Festival ticket, but act fast as this offer ends at 5pm on Friday, June 20th. Call 01282 661234 for more details.

There will be an afternoon of Jazz on the Sunday, with the Snake Davis Jazz Band heading the bill. There will be some fresh, new, young talent performing throughout the Festival as part of the Jessica Foxley Unsigned initiative and the Festival will once again play host to the British Blues Awards. Colne’s Festival is up against five others in the Best British Blues Festival category – Blues On The Farm, Carlisle Blues and Rock Festival, Hebden Bridge Blues Festival, Broadstairs Blues Bash and Ealing Blues Festival.

The nomination process has been conducted and the finalists in each of the 16 categories have been chosen. Now it is up to the public to choose their favourites.

The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony at The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival in Colne, on Sunday, August 24th. It would be great to receive the award on home ground!

Tenth Sports Awards will be bigger and better than ever! The 10th anniversary of Pendle’s celebration of everything to do with local sport gets a brand new look, with brand new categories aimed at recognising sporting excellence throughout the borough. Once again a collaboration between Pendle Leisure Trust and Leader Times Newspapers, the new categories are aimed at rewarding both sporting excellence and those who operate behind the scenes to make sure that all our sporting heroes can actually take to the field of play. The main award this year will be the Pendle Sports Personality of the Year. This award will be presented to someone who has shown a consistent commitment over a number of years, whether actually playing a sport or offering their time to facilitate one... or both! Also new for this year is the Team of the Year. This award is open to any team from any club, school or college which has made a significant impact with outstanding achievement and contribution to the community. The Rising Star category will recognise someone from the Talented Athletes Scheme who has shown significant improvement since joining the scheme. Also new is the Unsung Hero Award which will be split into two age categories, the Under 21s and the over 21s. This category will reward individuals who have shown unprecedented levels of commitment to volunteering in any capacity to support others in their sporting endeavours. There will also be two age-groups for the brand new Sporting Achievement Award. This award will recognise achievements, levels of performance, dedication and the ability to overcome barriers in any sport. On top of all those awards, there will also be a Sports Development Special Recognition Award and the Sporting Moments Awards. All the awards will be presented at a Gala Dinner at The ACE Centre in Nelson on Saturday, September 6th. Nomination forms will be appearing in copies of the Leader Times newspapers or you can request one from Amy Trickett in The Sports Development Team. Junior Gym Memberships tackle a growing problem Child obesity has been a hot topic in recent years, with various Government strategies targeting this rising problem. However, new research warns that our national obsession with children’s weight may be leading us away from a much greater problem – their poor levels of fitness. Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, Chair of Health Policy at Imperial College London, said: “There is a risk that tunnel vision on childhood obesity will mean cardiovascular fitness is ignored. Being fat shortens life, but so does being unfit and of normal weight.” Studies have shown that by the age of 15, children are five times more likely to be unfit than obese. Dr Gavin Standercock, who led the research, states: “The fact that nearly half of Year 11 pupils are unfit by the time they leave school is frightening, as this is likely to get worse when they stop doing PE – it is creating a potential public-health time bomb.” In an effort to tackle this growing problem, Pendle Leisure Trust has one of the lowest priced Junior Gym Memberships in the area. With activities such as Teen Boxercise, Fit Kidz, Tap Dancing, Dance Mats, Swimming and two enormous pool inflatables, there’s plenty to keep teens and tweens active this Summer and beyond. At £9.99 per month, or £99 for the year, memberships can pay for themselves with just two gym sessions a month, or less than one swimming session a week! Book in your child’s induction at one of our centres today and help boost their confidence, social skills and feel-good factor, as well as their all important fitness.

“healthy eating and exercise are essential life skills and need to be seen as important as reading, writing and maths.”

Diary of a Weedy Kid – The Big Reveal

STATS:

Name: LEWIS GARFORTH Age: 20 Height: 5’ 11” Start Date: 6 NOV 2013 Start Weight: 11st 6lb

Body Fat Percentage: 14% Goal Date: 10 MAY 2014 Final Weight: 11st 1lb Body Fat Percentage: 7.6% 16

After five months of Personal Training sessions at Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne, our ‘Weedy Kid’ reflects on the highs and lows of his experience, and asks the question, was it all worth it? Looking back over the blog entries I wrote when I first started training with Andy, it’s hard to believe that was only five months ago. Over that time I’ve gone from feeling really intimidated by the weights at the gym to looking forward to the next time I get to use them. There’s no doubt it’s been a slog and I’d be lying if I said I’d loved every minute, but it’s true that exercise is addictive - and the more you do, the more you want to carry on. I think the biggest change I’ve made has been my diet, when I think back to what I used to eat, I cringe at just how much sugar and carbohydrate I was consuming and how poorly I was fueling my body. Now I eat a much cleaner diet of mainly protein and vegetables and I feel so much better for it too.

“Over the past five months Lewis has not only completely changed the way he looks and feels, but he is now a more confident trainer, using the knowledge he has gained to control his technique and ensure he gets the most from each training session. Lewis has shown that anyone can start their journey in exercise, no matter what fitness level they begin with. With the correct training and guidance from a fitness professional, anything is achievable!” Andy Pickard, Personal Trainer

I’ve also noticed a big difference in the way I look and feel. I have a lot more energy now and my clothes fit a lot better than they used to. Over the course of this process I have lost 4.6lbs and about 7% of my body fat, which is nearly half of what I started with! I began my sessions with the hope of getting a bit more toned for my wedding and I’ve definitely done that.

Then...

Lewis at 14% body fat before starting his training

“If you want to improve your fitness or change your body shape, Personal Training sessions are definitely the best way to achieve your goal.” Andy has been an invaluable part of this process, being patient right from the start, and having just the right balance between shouting at me to work harder and easing off when I was about to throw up! He’s given me regular evaluations on my diet and my body weight/fat percentages, helping me to stay on track and identify anything that needed to change. This definitely isn’t the end of my training though, as I still have a long way to go to leave ‘Weedy Kid’ behind. To give me extra incentive to carry on after the wedding, I’ve signed up to do Tough Mudder this August, so I’m excited to see the shape I’ll be in after another three months of training.
