A new year and a new look for the PLT Magazine! Welcome to the first issue of the new Pendle Leisure Trust magazine. We’ve been working away behind the scenes following a successful trial in 2013 to make our bi-monthly offering even better! It’s taken a lot of planning and development, but everybody here at PLT HQ has been kept on track with our shiny, new ‘mantra mugs’ - we’ve just kept calm and got through a whole lot of tea bags! We’ve included more content from across our group in order to bring you the most relevant, up-to-date and informative news, and we’ll even feature the odd celebrity interview, such as this month’s chat with our very own Sue Madigan and BBC Motor Sport legend Steve Parrish, who is coming to the Muni Theatre in March (p. 7). If you’re looking for inspiration or you feel your New Year’s Resolution slowly residing back into the ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ box, then take a look at Pendle Wavelengths’ Biggest Loser (p. 4) for some fantastic stories from some of our members, who collectively lost over 15 stone between them with the help of our fitness instructors. Enjoy the magzine and check back in March for our next issue!

Three members of Pendle Wavelengths between them lost a staggering 156 pounds in 2013 – and they all put it down to the support, hard work and dedication of their fitness instructors.

Alwyn Beckles “I have always been a big person and at the beginning of 2012 I almost topped the 25 stone mark! I did no form of exercise, was constantly tired and was borderline diabetic, with high blood pressure too!” By August of that year he had lost 5 stone through slimming. Now he needed to get active and in shape. He joined Pendle Wavelengths and instructor Rab Nawaz took Alwyn under his wing. “Rab worked out a programme for me and kept an eye on me, making suggestions that would help me push myself further and up-dated my fitness plan when he noticed it was getting easy for me,” he added. “Now I weigh 13 stone 5 pounds and feel much healthier and fitter with the help of Rab and the other fitness trainers at Pendle Wavelengths. I really appreciate how much they have all helped me.”

Nadia Zaman Nadia says joining Pendle Wavelengths has changed her life and as well as achieving what she set out to do – lose weight – she has also gained a new family! In 2013 Nadia lost 46 pounds in nine months and she is still continuing with her weight loss. Although she enjoys a workout in the gym, she also enjoys the variety of exercise classes the Nelson leisure centre has to offer. She said: “I was always made so welcome when trying out new classes. Wavelengths is a family-orientated environment. Thank you for letting me be part of the family!”

Jane Campy After returning home from an all-inclusive holiday, Jane was the heaviest she had been for over two decades and was desperate to do something about it. In just 12 months she lost 21 pounds. Jane is thrilled that she is now the same weight as she was 25 years ago, before having children. “It took me a while to lose the weight, but it came off slow and gradual. The best bit now is the shopping trips for size 10 trousers and skirts! The muffin top has gone and I don’t feel self-conscious in the gym,” she said.

Tackling social isolation with the help of mother nature... As Pendle Leisure Trust’s lottery funded Good Life Project gets underway, we catch up with Project Co-ordinator Joanne Dootson. Pendle Leisure Trust has launched its new therapeutic horticultural project. The Good Life Project was unveiled during an Open Day earlier this month. The Launch event was a chance for potential participants, local residents, referral agencies, local organisations, councillors and anyone else interested to go along, have a look around the site and find out all about the project. The Good Life Project is a therapeutic horticulture programme run by Pendle Leisure Trust and funded by the Big Lottery – Reaching Communities Programme. Its main aim is to get people out of the house and in to a safe and non-judgemental environment, while benefitting from being out in the fresh air, being close to nature and learning new skills.

Visit the blog

Project Co-ordinator, Joanne Dootson, said: “I am really looking forward to working with people who have been stuck in the house and not been able to get out, and to build their confidence so they are ready to go out and take part in other community schemes and courses.” Activities take place in a quiet and peaceful setting on Hodge House Allotments, off Reedyford Road in Nelson and include growing fruit, vegetables and flowers, wood-working, art activities and general gardening.

You can stay up-to-date with all the latest news from The Good Life Project by following #PLTGLP on Facebook and Twitter, alternatively visit the Good Life Project Blog.

Motorcycling champion, BBC motorsport commentator and all-round prankster, Steve Parrish, comes to The Muni Theatre to talk about his colourful, humorous and, at times, daring career... ...And the audience should be in for a real treat! I caught up with him ahead of his trip ‘Up North’ to find out what we can expect from his night with us. And by the sounds of it we will all be leaving with aching ribs and even more laughter lines! Steve was British Motorcycling Champion in 1976 and team mate to Barry Sheene – winner in the 1977 World Championship. Now he is the BBC commentator for Motor GP. “But the evening will not just be for motor-racing fans,” said Steve. “The older generation will know me for my racing and the younger ones for my antics, so the evening will include a bit of both – but all of them true experiences! “I have lots of memories of scrapes, near misses and funny things that have happened to me. Trouble just seems to follow me around! “It’s a lot different now for sports stars. It’s all very serious – keeping in shape, watching what you eat and drink and early nights, not flirting with pretty girls in short skirts, drinking lots and having fun. It was a lot more relaxed in my day and some of the things I got up to just would not be allowed to happen now. “Like Barry Sheene said, if I had spent more time concentrating on my racing, rather than being a buffoon, I would have done a lot better! There is no doubt at all that I lost jobs and rides because of my fooling around.” Steve will be joined on stage by his daughter Frankie, who will be hosting the evening. “It’ll be lovely to work with my daughter. This will be the first time I’ve done it. She will be there mainly as a prompt and to remind me how much of a lunatic I have been over the years and the utter embarrassment I have caused her and many others,” he laughed. “One occasion springs to mind, going back to 1985 and Kawasaki were unveiling a brand new bike. All the press were there waiting for the grand reveal and – at that time I was riding for an opposing team - I thought it would be funny to sneak under the cover and place a bowl of dirty oil under the bike. So when the cover was removed it looked like the bike had an oil leak! Needless to say I was never asked to ride for Kawasaki!” In Steve’s words: “Life is for living and laughing!” ... And I’m sure there will be plenty of that when he comes to the Muni on March 2nd! STEVE PARRISH interviewed by SUE MADIGAN for PLT MAGAZINE

A new generation of sporting stars... Living the Olympic legacy two years down the line... Each year Pendle Leisure Trust selects a number of aspiring young people that represent a wide cross-section of sporting activities, from alpine sports and athletics through to motor-cross, sailing, badminton and rugby league, to help them achieve their sporting goal. Our ‘Talented Athletes’ are provided with training, facilities and, in some cases, grant-funding to further their sporting careers on a local, national and sometimes, international level. Such is the case of upcoming fencing superstar Lucy Belle-Williamson, who has recently been offered a place on England Fencing’s Tomorrows Achievers Programme with her sights firmly set on international acclaim. In 2013, the Trust supported athletes in the following categories:

• Cricket • Netball • Alpine Sports • Rugby League • Athletics • • Badminton • Tetrathlon • Hockey • Cycling • Motor-Cross • • Sailing • Football •

Are you a talented athlete that needs our help? Pendle Leisure Trust is looking for young, talented athletes who could qualify for support with training and competition costs. If you know someone aged between 12 and 18, who lives in Pendle and has represented the county in their sport, then they may be eligible for help with training or possibly a grant. In partnership with Pendle Borough Council, Pendle Leisure Trust wants to give young people the opportunity to further their potential in the sporting world. Pendle Leisure Trust’s Sports Development Manager, Clive Escreet, said: “This scheme recognises the importance of supporting Pendle’s young people in achieving their sporting goal. “Through the creation of the Talented Athletes Fund, young sportsmen and women will be helped and encouraged to compete in regional, national and even international competitions.” The scheme offers free, unlimited use of Pendle’s swimming pools, fitness rooms, athletics track and exercises classes, as a means of assisting with training programmes. An application pack can be obtained from Louise Cooper at Colne Town Hall, by calling 01282 661236. All applications need to be returned to Colne Town Hall, by February 28th 2014.

Great British R&B Festival voted the the QR code for our best in Europe! Scan acceptance video... The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival is the best in Europe – and it’s official! Colne’s annual music event has been named the Best Blues Festival in the European Blues Awards 2013. Formerly known as the Trans European Blues and Jazz Awards, the awards were started in 1981 by Dietrich Muller and Tall Boy Wilder. The process remains Pan European and totally independent of sponsorship, although this year was the first time social media played such a major part, which is where most of the votes came from. The awards were linked up with the Twitter-based weekly Blues Hour open forum – and, according to organisers, the response was nothing short of phenomenal! There were nine categories, including Best Band, Best Guitarist, Best Radio Show, Best Musician, Best Vocalist and a Lifetime Contribution to European Blues was awarded to Wilko Johnson. The Blues Hour Twitter chat was held every Monday night and was regularly frequented by blues legends and new talent, as well as the odd Festival or two, including The Great British R&B Festival. 2013’s musical extravaganza was declared the best yet by the people that attended it, with the likes of Bill Wyman and his Rhythm Kings, former Cream musician Ginger Baker, Blues Music Awards nominee Joe Louis Walker, Chris Farlowe, Nine Below Zero and Paul Lamb and The King Snakes on the bill. Festival organiser, Alison Goode, said: “We are absolutely delighted and extremely honoured to have won this award which officially recognises the Festival as the best in Europe !”

Set your goal for 2014 with Pendle Leisure Trust’s ‘Big 4’ challenges... We realise that achieving your fitness goals can be tough and at times it can be difficult to stay motivated. Research has shown that you are more likely to achieve your goal if you set yourself a target. So, with this in mind, we have chosen four challenges that can be achieved by anyone, with the support of Pendle Leisure Trust’s fitness instructors. The Big Four are: Pendle Triathlon - May National 3 Peaks Challenge (Ben Nevis, Scarfell and Snowdonia in 24hours) - June Tough Mudder - August Coast to Coast cycle ride (147 miles) - September There is no limit to the number of challenges you choose to do and it doesn’t matter if you are a novice or an athlete. We will help you train for them. Our professional instructors, who have experience in all four challenges, will organise a training schedule to ensure everyone crosses the finishing line together. All the challenges will incur an entry fee, however all training sessions will be free to Activo members.

For more information contact John Bannister or Andy Pickard on 01282 661166

Take part in our Health Survey In order to attract new funding and strengthen funding bids to continue the Trust’s valuable work within the community delivering Healthy Lifestyles, Sports Development and Arts Development, a Sport and Exercise Survey was recently carried out in partnership with Nelson and Colne College, local schools, Pendle Youth Council and other partners. A total of 3,300 surveys were distributed, with 1,190 being returned - an excellent response. The results have been analysed and have been published on the Trust’s website www.pendleleisuretrust.co.uk. The main aim of this survey was to gather data from over 14 year olds. The results show that 14 – 18 year olds do participate in sport and exercise on a regular basis, mainly through schools, sports facilities or home alone, with a noticeable drop off in participation from the age of 19. We would like to thank all the people that took part in the survey and we are now carrying out another one, this time looking at health. The aim is to identify the need for new initiatives in order to continue to help improve the health and well-being of the people of Pendle.

If you would like to participate in this survey, scan the QR code on the right or visit the homepage of the Pendle Leisure Trust website.

Organisers Pendle Leisure Trust and Doc Redeye Events, are teaming up with the Cheeky Northern Monkeys Scooter Club who will be descending on Colne and Nelson Rugby Club for their annual weekend. They will be linking up with other local scooter clubs for a rally through the town, which should provide quite a spectacle and take visitors back to the time when Mods ruled. Diary of a Weedy Kid - one big push for one very big day... When our groom-to-be agreed to get in shape with PLT instructor Andy Pickard, he had no idea just what he had let himself in for! Like most grooms-to-be contemplating the biggest day of my life, I started to realise I needed to get into shape. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not overweight, in fact I’m a pretty average size 20 year-old, 5’11 with a slight frame, so I’m not after shedding the pounds, but I could definitely benefit from a bit of toning and definition…

Personal Trainer 1 : Google 0 Not knowing where on earth to start, I turned to the one place I knew I would get solid, easy to follow, fool-proof advice - Google. Big mistake! After hours of trawling through pages and pages of contradicting advice, diets, workout plans etc, I ended up more confused and discouraged than when I started…

STATS:

Name: LEWIS GARFORTH Age: 20 Height: 5’ 11” Start Date: 6 NOV 2013 Goal Date: 10 MAY 2014 Start Weight: 11st 6lb

Body Fat Percentage: 14%

So I decided to book in with Andy Pickard at Pendle Leisure Centre… I imagined he would give me a plan for what exercises to do and then I’d be able to go off and do it myself. This is true to some extent, as he did give me a plan to refer to whenever I want, but I never imagined what a difference it would make having someone push me to my absolute limits. If I was on my own, without a doubt I would have stopped long before Andy let me, and I guess that’s the point…

“Couldn’t stress enough the benefits of having someone who knows what they are talking about...” Read more of Lewis’ posts on our new blog, follow him on his journey with Andy, share your encouragement Visit the blog and find out if he meets his goal!
