ĺş? The Prologue/ Entry Trail

Entry TRAIL/PLANTING ELEVATION DESIGN

To preserve the untouched wilderness, we intent to avoid any vehicular entry, leaving a 600-metre trail as the only access to the park. The entering experience is not enhanced by meandering of the trail, but instead the diverse vegetation of varying height. It is an efficient pathway without compromising the vibrant visual journey.

ĺŁš The Colored Landscape/ Cultural Village This vast piece of flat land is constantly suffering from soil erosion. By modifying the land form and introducing vegetation on the site, a piece of bare land is transformed into a fore garden of the cultural village. The village is an inside out art museum formed by abandoned settlements. Revitalized by artwork and elevated corridors, the lost village is offered with a new cultural interpretation.

Sky Mirror/ Amphitheater

Situated in the valley is the heavenly Sky Mirror, an elevated pond that completes the historic horse-shoe reservoir. The concentric layout of seating allows the central pond to be an ideal performance stage, with its boundary directly relates to the body of water collected from nature. The subtle change of its profile creates seamless transition between water and ground, between architecture and nature. The sky bridge offers a spiritual procession – from walking on water, descending to a reflecting pool, to immerging into the extensive landscape, echoes by occasional waterfall.

The acme of the site is elaborated by an installation that visualizes data technologies. Taking the advantage of such windy site, the installation takes the form of wind turbines to gather data like wind speed and wind direction, and simultaneously generate electricity for the area. Other climatic data such as temperature, rainfall and pollutant content are also reflected by the installation, through the change of color from blue to yellow, the beacons indicates when is the best time to visit the site to people from afar.

Description: To promote urban green living in the city of Chongqing is the main drive of our architectural proposal, not only being embraced by a lavish amount of vegetation, residents are encouraged to take part in a more active engagement: to grow your own greenery, to practice urban farming as a part of a healthy lifestyle, and to simultaneously encourage social interaction.

Entrepreneur Mr. Jin is a member of Endangered Plants Protection Group. From 9am to 10:30am in the morning, he likes to attend the Endangered Vegetation Preservation Programs at the Technology Lab here at 26th floor. After having lunch at the first floor lobby, Mr. Jin attend a Rare Wild Herbarium Exhibition from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. There is a meeting with the start up company Mr Jin invested in at 3:00pm in the conference room at 26th floor. Then, he goes to the GYM, located at the 40th floor, to work out. After getting super sweaty, Mr. Jin enjoys the time at the hot spring. 12th Floor

Yali, a young web app designer, just start her own business. She rents an office place at 26th floor. Yali usually wake up at 7:30am in the morning, and then goes up to the 40th floor for a quick run. At 8:30am, she goes down to the first floor to get coffee and bread for breakfast. Then, she goes to 26th floor, her own office, to start her work. When it’s lunch time at 12:30pm, she goes to the lobby to get fresh lunch at the restaurant. After working hard till 5pm, she decided to spend some time at the SPA at 40th floor. After relaxation, Yali meet her friends at the night club to enjoy their night life.

Mr. Zhang and Mrs. Wang are in their 60s. They just moved to our lovely Yangshida building and started their relaxing and healthy retirement life here. Every day in the morning at 6:30 am, they go to the 40th floor to do exercising together and get refreshed. After done with excising at about 7:30am, they heading down to the first floor to get fresh milk. Around 8am, it’s time for them to go to 12th floor to take care of their own vegetables at the Urban Farm. At the Urban Farm here, they could access fresh and safe vegetables. After 1 and half hours maintaining their mini farm at 9:30 am, they harvest some well-grown vegetables and bring them home for lunch. After lunch break at 3pm, Mrs. Wang goes to the 26th to view the beautiful flower garden there while Mr. Zhang goes to the Tea House to play chess with his old friend and sipping the traditional Laoying fine tea.

Young Couple Mr. Zhao and Miss Du are young couples at their 20s. Miss Du often goes to do outdoor Yoga at 40th floor at 7:30am in the morning while Mr. Zhao like to do rock climbing. Then, they go to the first floor café for breakfast at 8:30am. When they get off from daily work at 6pm, they go to the farmer’s market to get some fresh meat or seafood. Also, they will go to their mini farm at 12th floor to check if there are some matured vegetables for dinner. After done with their dinner at 9pm, they have their anniversary party at the pool side.

Mr. Sun and his wife Mrs. Li live here with their 6 year old kid. Every weekend, it’s time to reunite the whole family together. They enjoy spending time together at the Urban Farm at 12th floor. At noon, they go to the restaurant at the first floor to have lunch together. Next, they will go to Jacuzzi pool at 40th floor for relaxation.

Architectural Stalactites Lobby at the first floor is a material manifestation of such ecological lifestyle. When entering the architecture, one is greeted by the architectural canyon which defines the lobby. Passing through the hall one arrives at a farmer’s market underneath a series of “stalactites”, selling natural produces, restaurants and café serving organic

Located on 12th floor is potentially the most animated place in the residential complex. The undulating contours of urban farmland spread beyond curtain wall to form a seamless urban landscape that marks the character of the tower. Farmland is arranged in a radial manner with sinuous circulation extending from the core. Free from any visual obstacles, we expect a lot of social interaction between citizens amid the vastness of the urban landform, and a strong bonding in the neighborhood to be formed.

A laboratory and a greenhouse are situated here to provide a controlled environment to practice latest agricultural practices such as hydroponic farming and to fulfill other educational purposes.

THESIS Thesis Title: Flexibility_A Design Approach Starting From Manufacture Student: Peng Jin Advisor: Ronald Rael

Description: After several years of architectural practice, designing spaces bring people unconventional experiences, Jin believes materials and techniques drive the innovation of architecture design. Taking advantage of this new material named TPE (special formulated thermoplastic elastomer), he did a series of study with the 3D printing technology, testing out both the limit of the material and the printer. Such as printing larger volume with a relatively smaller printer which could offer better accuracy, and print flexible material with bi-stable units to create shape-memory structure. Jin applied all these studies to his architecture design afterwards, creating spaces with flexibility and adaptability, as wells as new ways of interaction between divided spaces, also between human and nature.

UNFOLD

This flexible material gives the chance to print objects much larger than the printer itself. This can bring benefits such as lower the cost while having the better accuracy which bigger printers usually do not have. Using this unfold design, I can create a much taller volume (4 to 6 times higher).

TEXTURE/BISTABLE STRUCTURE

Having the Unrolling design, I try to attach textures on the sheet to control the rigidity in a certain area. I can manage to print structure to control the thickness of the sheet, which is the main factor of rigidity control. During this time, I find out the extrusion printer I have is really good at and only good at continuously printing this flexible material. With the help of dear professors, I find it would be so great that I print Bistable structure with this printer. Bi-stable is an object can be stable in multiple statuses. The surface should be able to contain energy, and the double curved surface I printed is the best for this Bistable object.

The unfold design has a limitation that it can be only stretched one direction. Then I changed the unfolding direction from vertical to horizontal. Then I have this 3D printed sheet.

Then I went on for an architectural design approach. I found out it would be so good to create a soft wall can be self-standing (stronger in the vertical direction), and also easy to be bent (soft on the horizontal direction), and also has the volume inside for people to feel comfortable. Then I manage to print this piece of flexible wall.

I used this Bi-stable structure to create a shape memory volume, which also gives nice texture and transparency.

Competition Thomas Church Memorial Design Competition 2016 Title: Ocean Beach Seawall Space Renovation Subject: Ocean Beach, San Francisco Location: Student: Peng Jin, Holun(Alan) Chiang, Yue Pan, Ying Tan Advisor: Ronald Rael Description: This project represents an architectural proposal to preserve the decaying Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Shaugnessyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Seawall and the Ocean Beach Esplanade, one of the Californian most loved civic space, due to constant erosion and sea level rise. It also aims at redefining the character of the waterfront in response to the adjacent natural habitat of the endangered bird species and changing urban settlement. With the use of 3D printing technologies, a series of organic wave-like concrete structure, which is difficult to be built by conventional construction methods, could be constructed or printed on site by machinery temporarily attached to the existing seawall. The seawall extension performs as an improvement of the coastal defence, simultaneously a new public experience.

The existing seawall is made up of the upper wall part and the lower stairs which are for both resisting the waves and offering space for people to sit, which is covered by the added sand for creating the beach.

Because this part of the seawall is at the very end of the current, which means there is less sand accumulation here to protect the seawall. This part has the highest level of decay.

This part we designed small deep units. On one hand this means more units within the same length of the wall, which will make the seawall stronger to handle the decay. On the other hand, the public space in this area will be the most interesting ones, which meet different need of people using it here. The deep units can be used as stages to perform or open space for parties.

As this part is getting far away from the bus station and parking space, there will be fewer people coming this far. As we go on to the south, we are getting closer to the wild birds residence area. We designed this area with more taller trees and closure space, for people to enjoy some private and quite space. Also to provide large group of people here damage the natural environment.

This part is the far end of the seawall with wild animals, birds and high sand dunes. We designed a wood deck to keep human activity away from the animals and birds, also solving the pedestrain problem. The units are large and space are covered by plants. People can rest on the wood deck and enjoy the sunshine with the high view of the beach.

Description: This Midtown District is a realisation of the healthy lifestyle. Midtown Atlanta has long been a walkable city with the careful planning of plot size. The development not only remains this quality but enhances it. We are proposing a pedestrian system that meanders through MARTA, office sectors, residential quarters, retail development, recreational facilities, architectural heritage, and eventually directs to the University. It is a network composed of streets, walkways, footbridges and podiums, embraced by trees all along, with occasional breaks of public landscapes, it facilitates circulation and more than that, encompasses the life routines of the healthy citizens. We name this system the Loop.

Developing Phases The development proposal in terms of floor area and program ratio is based on data and statistics, including the estimation of population growth and the increase in the workforce over the next decade. Locating at the Transit Station Area, the maximum Floor Area Ratio is 10.2 if a mixeduse development with affordable housing is proposed. We made a careful decision to make use of the maximum floor area available after studying the data in hand and considering the prominent location of the site.

Technology Village The long strip of development at the west end is Technology Village. It takes the advantage of the nearby Technology Square and Georgia Tech. to form a hub for business incubation and expansion to happen. The 10-storey glass-and-steel ribbon accommodates most of the affordable office space, with the ground level serving as market-rate and affordable retail. Its building mass relates to that of Technology Square while its architectural gestures at the time form a number of intimate courtyards and plazas which encourage interactions between creative minds. Above low rise offices are office and residential towers with affordable housing. Galleries, pop-up stores scatter around Olympic Amphitheater, adjacent to a new University Bridge, replacing the unfavourable tunnel to span across Downtown Connector.

The Canyon Taking the pedestrian flyover at Station Plaza, one arrives at the core of the complex the Canyon. The organic building silhouette and the juxtaposition of the twin towers form a visual corridor towards the Olympic Tower towards the north-west. Olympic Tower is one of the most loved tourist attractions and a true landmark of the city erected 2 decades ago. We feel inevitable to embrace the monument into the development, to generate a conversation between the old and the new landmarks. In terms of urban landscape, we are proposing traffic-free pedestrian boulevard, vitalized by retail and public performance spaces, which brings a brand new urban experience to residents in Midtown.

The City Gateway The City Gateway is a dense development that surrounds MARTA North Avenue Station with a retail podium and its signature tower One Midtown. Such prominent situation defines its diverse character of the tower, accommodating office, hotel and domestic units. The height of the building echoes with the neighboring Bank of America Tower and AT&T Midtown Tower, yet with a more dynamic touch of tapering profile that reflects the vertical change of program.

Description: The escalating silhouette of the tower blends the deep floor plates for large public oriented programs to the slender tower of efficient spaces for living and working. This form coincides perfectly with the ideal structural diagram â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a slim needle that spreads out at the base to support its height. The social and structural performances of the Landmark Tower coincide in a single gesture. At the tower base, the vertical accumulation of urban programs spills out and fills the surrounding city with life and activity. Vice versa, multiple activities within the tower draw people in from around the site to work and live in vertical density.

While the site and high rise buildings are traditionally seen as independent elements, typically reinforced by the existence of a podium the tower steps up from the site and spans up to the first several levels of the tower. From the site to the roof of the podium, a cascade of generous terraces and public gardens connects the public urban realm to the public terraces and base programs above ground of the landmark tower. The tower grows up from the life in the city, rather than being an isolated object dropped on the site. This blending of site and landscape and architecture occurs from the human scale to the building scale. Starting in the plazas around the Tower, pedestrians will experience a blurring of the boundary between site, landscape and building where pavers are composed with a porous gradient that softens the transition from hardscape to soft scape and roof.

PEOPLE FLOW and VERTICAL TRANSPORT Like a city within a city, this tower is a mixed-use project containing a wide range of programs including retail, conference, business and media center at the base, and office, residences, and hotel within the tower. The pinnacle is a publicly accessible observation deck with 360-degree views of the city and region. The size of floor plates is optimized for the different programmatic components within, resulting in the tapered volume of the tower. Deeper floor plates at the base accommodate the public-oriented programs such as main lobbies, retail, food and beverage, leisure, and conference, business, and media centers. Description: Harbin Opera House, located in the Northern Chinese city of Harbin. In 2010, MAD won the international open competition for Harbin Cultural Island, a master plan for an opera house, a cultural center, and the surrounding wetland landscape along Harbin’s Songhua River. The sinuous opera house is the focal point of the Cultural Island, occupying a building area of approximately 850,000 square feet of the site’s 444 acres total area. It features a grand theater that can host over 1,600 patrons and a smaller theater to accommodate an intimate audience of 400.

COMPETITION IN 2011

Competition Title: Urban Design for International Medical and Nursing Center Area in Year 2050 Subject: Urban Design Affiliated with Tsukuba University Location: Northern Part of Katsuragi District, Japan Land Area: 0.5 SQKM Student: Peng Jin Advisor: Tongtong Liu

Description: With the competition site in Katsuragi district, Japan, I find the most important resource here is water and trees. The site used to be a green land covered by trees. My plan is to use the time from now to 2050 to return the green land view to the site while the construction taking place. Taking advantage of the future stronger and lighter material and technology, I also design a water collecting system to using the frequently rainy weather in the area to create a dynamic and eco-friendly residential district.

The theme of the competition was urban design for the area in 2050, which was more about imagination to most of the participant. I notice that people break in the site for construction preparation, kept on destroying the biology system around the site area in the last 20 year. 50 years maybe a so long a period that it could be more than enough for the explosion of imagination, but just in this recent past 20 years, we destroyed the environment on this site already.

My main intention is to recover and thrive the nature environment of the site in the next 40 years while the space's urban function taking place, and prepare for the sea level rise in 2050 as a warning for people today to treat environment problems seriously.

A park would be built here first to remedy the deterioration of the natural environment. Picnicking, walking and the other similar human behaviour takes part in this area, which could make it slow for the natural environment to accept impending built architecture. Feel the Nature

I put this swivelable building compared to a bottle filled with water.

Hang the bottle with a rope fixed to the top of it.

S eve ra l h o l e s a r e placed around the base of the bottle, aligned to their respective tangential directions.

Water begin to flow o u t o f th e b o t t l e from the holes on the base, which provides power for the swivelling.

The water falling starts to spin the bottle; we can adjust the amount of the water yielded to adjust the speed of the rotation.

Several pipes are placed on the epidermis to help the diversion. Two layers of the pipes interweave, allowing for plants with adhesive ability to be planted on them.

We use the potential gravitational energy of rain and the discharge of the domestic sewage to promote the construction revolving slowly.

The form of the building's outer epidermis is biomimetic, using the kinetic energy of the rainwater flowing down this part of the building's skin.

Dynamic Residential Highrise Several holes are placed around the base of the building, aligned to their respective tangential directions, from where water effuses to spin the mega "bottle". A mega "bottle" is put inside the building - a water turbine instead of the vertical circulation core- where rainwater is first collected and recycled for daily use, then drained outside, providing the main power source to spin the whole building, while also creating surplus electricity storage, full-around daylighting and necessary spiral air flow. The functional parts of the building are hung around the exterior surface of the water turbine, supported and protected partly by its soft buffer system. Therefore, severe structural damage could be avoided even in cases of large earthquakes. The facade's configuration is adapted to the water flow direction; terraces with plants are extended outside from dwelling units. Last but not least, vapor containers, landscape architectures and underground water collectors are placed above, around and below the main complex, in order to create the comprehensive urban mega-structures.

Each layer has 9 hotel rooms for 9 patients.There is an outdoor balcony every two rooms to provide space for the elderly to communicate and plant.
