Revolving Door

The furniture and patio industry faces a critical challenge.

According to Axonify’s 2024 seasonal hiring survey, almost 60% of retail managers report that the quality of applicants this year is significantly lower than last year in terms of skill set, professionalism, and job-related experience. While some natural turnover keeps your team dynamic, retaining and developing your engaged employees is more crucial than ever.

“If I had gone into this business to sell volume, I would have quit in one year.”

Divine Design, p. 32

Here’s the truth: Transforming a highturnover environment into a stable, engaged team isn’t about fancy perks or astronomical wages. It’s about understanding a fundamental principle—associates who feel cared for will treat customers like they’re cared for, too.

Let me show you how to make this happen.

START WITH STELLAR ONBOARDING

If your new hires ghost you, it’s time to look in the mirror. When employees don’t stick around, consider taking the stance that it’s on you, not them. The solution? Slow down and commit to excellent onboarding.

Here’s a simple but powerful strategy I’ve seen work time and again: When a new hire starts, have a genuine conversation with them. Gather enough information so you can walk them around the sales floor and introduce them

ACTION STEPS TO STOP THE REVOLVING DOOR

1. Transform your onboarding process into a relationship-building opportunity.

2. Personally introduce new hires and facilitate meaningful connections.

3. Implement regular one-on-one time with employees, even if it’s just five minutes.

4. Use technology to empower your staff, not replace human interaction.

5. Create unique, memorable rewards that build team pride.

6. Share performance data to increase accountability and buy-in.

7. Establish mentorship programs pairing new hires with experienced staff.

8. Conduct regular team meetings that focus on growth and collaboration.

9. Use customer data to create those “everybody knows your name” moments.

10. Build confidence in younger employees through supportive training.

to every team member—not with generic introductions like “That’s Tim over there. He handles grills,” but with meaningful connections. Find common ground between your new hire and existing team members. Maybe they both love grilling at tailgate parties, play guitar, love the same sports team, or went to the same school. Then, leave those two alone for a few minutes to get to know each other. This simple act helps integrate new hires into the team and makes them feel valued from day one. It also shows how well they can engage a stranger.

BUILD YOUR RETAIL FAMILY

When I was 16, I found more than just a job in retail—I found a supportive family environment that taught me valuable life skills. This experience wasn’t unique to me. Many people enter the retail industry not just because they need a paycheck, but because they’re looking for a place where they belong.

To nurture this sense of belonging, retail managers should spend five minutes weekly with one employee doing a menial task. It might seem small, but this hands-on approach builds relationships and shows employees that their development matters. Whether it’s restocking shelves, organizing fabric books, or fixing up the backroom, these moments create connections that make employees think twice before leaving.

LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY WISELY

While relationships are fundamental, technology plays a crucial role in reducing turnover. A comprehensive point of sale (POS) system can help create the “Cheers effect”—where everybody knows your customers’ names and living preferences. This enhances the customer experience and gives employees the tools they need to succeed across outdoor and indoor seasons.

Mobile technology in particular can transform how your team works. When staff can serve customers anywhere in your showroom with mobile POS systems, they feel more empowered and engaged. Plus, integrated POS and credit card processing systems reduce errors and frustration, making everyone’s job easier.

CREATE MEANINGFUL INCENTIVES

Let’s talk about motivation. The reality is that 63% of employees feel underpaid, and 54% feel underappreciated. But throwing money at the problem is only sometimes the answer. Instead, focus on creating experiences that make people want to come to work.

Think beyond traditional incentives. If you pay

Since its inception, Ultrafabrics has been focused on creating materials that embody the future.

commissions, consider surprising your top performers with cash instead of a check—there’s something tangibly rewarding about being handed actual money that makes the achievement feel more real and immediate. But don’t stop there.

A custom pair of store-branded Nikes for top performers might cost the same as a small bonus, but it creates a lasting impression and builds team pride. Celebrate successes publicly and make rewards personal, meaningful, and timely.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Retail is a game of being brilliant on the basics. By focusing on meaningful onboarding, building genuine relationships, leveraging technology effectively, and creating rewarding experiences, you can transform your workplace from a revolving door into a destination where employees want to stay and grow.

Remember, when you create an environment where employees feel valued and supported, they’ll pass that same care along to your customers. That’s not just good for your team—it’s good for business.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

f you could make only one recommendation to a specialty retailer, what would it be?” That question was put to me recently by, not surprisingly, a specialty retailer.

I started a reply that sounded like, “Well, it would depend …”, but she wasn’t having it. “Nope, no qualifiers, what’s one thing that you know I probably need to get better at even though you haven’t stepped into my store?”

OK, her game, her rules. I sighed, looking past her at the fountain of the restaurant we were in. After a full minute of mentally checking off all the common sins I’ve seen over the years, I landed on the one, mortal sin that triggers a whole host of issues behind it. I reengaged eye contact and said, “Your front door.”

“What about my front door?” I shared with her what I had heard Danny Meyer say on a podcast. Meyer is the founder of several well-known upscale restaurants in NYC, as well as the co-founder of the more affordable chain, Shake Shack. When asked what makes his restaurants stand out from the rest, he said, “It’s our front-door experience.” He wasn’t only talking about the physical quality of your entrance, which is important, but also the way you are greeted when you enter.

In his words, “Too many nice places make you wait your turn to approach a podium that separates you from the host. And the first words you hear are “Do you have a reservation?” Once you give your name, you’re then passed off to another nameless staffer who is told to “Take them to 27 please.” In Meyer’s view, this process is transactional at best, and condescending at worst.

In Meyer’s upscale restaurants, there are no host stands that separate staff and customers. Upon arrival, you are approached by one of several hosts, greeted warmly and genuinely thanked for coming in. They help you with coat check if you need it, and they personally escort you to your table and con-

tinue to engage your group until your server arrives as your host introduces them to you.

I asked my dinner host to think about everything she has done right to get a customer to walk through her door. Her marketing and website must have been on point to attract this customer. Her location must have felt safe and in an acceptable retail location. Her parking lot must have been litter free, and her storefront inviting and exuding the right vibe. And all of this is in jeopardy depending on what happens in the first 30 seconds after that customer walks through her front door.

thing we came up with, but here are a few basics that you may want to consider for your team:

Now it was my host’s turn to stare at the fountain for a bit. She didn’t get defensive as I had feared, and as she spoke, I understood why. “In a previous life, I managed an upscale restaurant for a few years right after college. And you’re right, our owners hammered us on the front-of-house experience and told us if we screwed up a reservation or didn’t greet customers well, there was nothing the kitchen could do to save the experience for that customer. I don’t know why I’ve never connected the dots from that restaurant job to my store now, but you’re right, our customers have the exact same expectations.”

Over dinner we went on to discuss the challenges specialty retailers face in our industry. How COVID had been such a tsunami of business activity for our industry, but after the big wave receded, we’ve been left with eroded beaches since then. We talked about the challenges of staffing for a seasonal business. And about how consumer expectations are borderline unrealistic today.

But even with those challenges, we came up with a strategy that she was excited to explore with her team about emphasizing the importance of “The First Thirty Seconds.” I won’t divulge every-

You, as the business owner, must communicate that “We are a frontdoor business. How the customer feels about us in the first 30 seconds after she walks in will make everything we do after that either easier or harder for all of us.” (Note: This is not a “one and done” communication from you. You will need to pound this nail until you start to see eye rolls from your team.)

With your team’s help, create a process for how customers will be greeted when they come in. You may need two different processes, one for slow days (Greet and Keep) and one for busy days (Greet and Release).

In season, consider assigning one team member to be “Expediter du jour” each day. They greet customers, get their names and reason for coming in, assure them of their spot in line and get them a beverage. The Expediter is first up to answer incoming telephone calls and to handle the guy who just came in for a bag of hickory pellets and some brisket rub.

If you only improve one thing in your business in 2025, make it be the way customers feel about your front door.

Be well. Do good.

The aesthetics and visual impact of fireplaces, regardless of the fuel source, are still high on the priority list for consumers.

Real flames mingle with holographic flames and various representations of “wood” as manufacturers seek to satisfy continuing demand for fire. For heat, aesthetics, or both, consumers are still enamored with dancing flames—frequently combined with other entertainment.

“Fireplace media walls are the biggest single transformation we have seen in the last decade, particularly in living areas,” says Michael Athay, group managing director at British Fires Ltd. “These areas typically feature linear models with a log arrangement and television above.”

As arguably the quickest growing category of the fireplace market, Athay contends that retailers need to embrace the trend and capitalize on it. “TVs posi-

tioned above fireplaces can also be useful marketing tools,” he says. “Retailers can run adverts about the benefits of electric fires.”

While the overall health of the fireplace market remains strong, the market on the higher end can be less susceptible to changing conditions. “While admittedly much smaller in size, the higher end of the market tends to fly easier through economic turbulence,” says Gary Kenneth Lindberg, North American sales manager at Camina & Schmid Inc. “The market in which we operate is generally funded well, and not typically impacted as much by interest rates.”

Merely carrying beautiful products is not enough, and manufacturers agree that the art of the showroom should never be neglected. “The key to success lies in creating a compelling inperson experience,” says Gina Almaguer, director of marketing at Ortal North America. “Dealers

who feature live displays give customers, whether homeowners or design professionals, a chance to fully experience the look and feel.”

Heather Hussong Reasoner, vice president of Hussong MFG Co., Inc., maker of Kozy Heat Fireplaces, reminds retailers that almost 80% of people visit a website before visiting a store. With that in mind, a good looking and easy-tonavigate website is still important.

“More than 90% of prospective customers read reviews before buying a product,” Hussong Reasoner adds. “This may be one of the most underemphasized categories for dealers. Are they asking people to leave positive reviews? Are they watching the reviews that customers are leaving?”

The 11 manufacturers in this year’s fireplace spotlight have a remarkable lineup of innovative products to spark sales in the new year.

VALOR FIREPLACES

Officials at Valor Fireplaces (North Vancouver, British Columbia) introduced several new fireplaces over the last year, including the P2, an update to its portrait-style gas fireplaces. After introducing the LT1 gas fireplace in 2023, Valor added the LT2 gas fireplace, based on the length of its popular L2.

“The LT2 landscape linear is over 5 inches taller than the L2, and, at 50 inches in length, 10 inches longer than the LT1,” says Berit Hansen, marketing specialist. “On the electric front, we recognized the success of the GE3 electric insert fireplace last year, so we decided to offer the GE4—similar in size to our gas G4 insert gas fireplace.”

Electric fireplaces such as the GE3 + GE4, and PE2 have resonated with buyers, but Hansen notes that, “Our tried and true G3 insert gas fireplace, as well as our H3 ZC gas fireplace, are still top scorers, especially as we go into storm season.” Since Valor fireplaces don’t require an electric hookup but run on batteries, they will maintain their warmth in a power outage.

Seeing the fireplaces in person undoubtedly helps customers imagine how they would look in their home. “A well-laid-out, easy-to-navigate salesroom makes a big difference to the way a customer feels in the dealer showroom,” Hansen says. “More and more, an online presence helps dealers reach the most amount of people. Existing actively on social media, and ensuring your website is easy to find, are the basics of marketing in today’s market.”

DIMPLEX

It was a busy year for officials at Dimplex (Cambridge, Ontario) with the 2024 introduction of the Ignite Ultra and Ignite Aspire fireplaces. The new flame experiences featured two new, patented technologies—the Dynamic-Fire flame effect and advanced Rhythmic Logs with inner glow technology.

“Working together, these innovations embody a true fire experience with lifelike logs and embers that

pulse in sync, new natural flame colors, and authentic crackling wood sounds,” says Daniel Rosato, director of Sales, Tradepro. “This next generation of Dimplex technologies truly sets the bar for the market and delivers an optimal experience in terms of realism, ease of installation, and design options for residential and commercial designers.”

Ultra and Aspire electric fireplaces provide linear and portrait formats with multiple sizes, which give homeowners and designers many design options— including sizing that is perfect for natural gas fireplace replacement.

In 2025, Dimplex plans to expand its vapor fireplace lineup with new formats and sizes. “We’ve designed our Optimyst Revive and Optimyst Aura to meet the changing needs of the market,” Rosato says.

“When customers are interested in adding another fireplace to their space or looking for an option out-

side of gas or wood, our vapor and electric fireplaces are a perfect choice. We’re excited to open up design possibilities with not only these new Optimyst fireplaces but also our full range of electric fireplaces.”

Dimplex’s Ignite family of fireplaces continues to be the company’s bestselling line of electric fireplaces, as it has for more than a decade. Rosato attributes the unit’s continued success to “the most realistic electric flame within the industry, and the various products within this family that provide a solution for everyone with a range of sizes and price points.”

MODERN FLAMES

Modern Flames (Phoenix, Arizona) launched TruWood Logs in 2024 for nearly all of its electric fireplaces. “TruWood is real wood—handcrafted, handpicked, and individually charred to elevate the realism of our products,” says Kris Richardson, presi-

dent. “Looking ahead to 2025, we have several exciting launches, with the most anticipated being the Orion Clear, a seethrough Virtual Electric Fireplace featuring our latest technology.”

Bestselling designs continue to come out of the Orion Series, which Richardson describes as “a first-of-its-kind virtual electric fireplace we launched in 2022. For nearly two years, it has been in a league of its own.”

In 2025, Richardson is confident that planned new features will transform the category. When that happens, his advice to specialty retailers is to keep showroom displays updated with the latest, because the

industry is advancing quickly, and customers are eager to see the newest technologies.

“There’s a lot of exciting innovation happening, which is increasing customer interest and demand,” Richardson adds. “Our products stand out due to their attention to detail, realism, and our commitment to ongoing innovation. We’re always focused on making improvements and releasing new products every year. We have a dedicated team that’s always available to support customers and answer our phone. Our service extends well beyond the sale, giving dealers confidence in the long-term reliability of our products. I’m optimistic about the future of the fireplace industry.”

NAPOLEON

Napoleon (Barrie, Ontario) has expanded its fireplace lineup, focusing on outdoor products with sustainable electric options and premium design choices. The Elevation X, the Riverside, and Galaxy outdoor gas fireplaces are all designed to enhance backyard and outdoor room aesthetics.

“With cutting-edge features like see-through designs and high-definition media, these fireplaces provide unmatched realism while prioritizing energy efficiency,” says Garry Scott, vice president of Marketing. “Napoleon’s new products set a new standard in both style and sustainability, meeting the growing demand for environmentally conscious home solutions.”

New additions such as the Elevation X Indoor Electric Fireplace boast all of the same features as the company’s popular Elevation Electric, with the added realism of premium LCD flame technology. “The Elevation offers unmatched authenticity,” Scott says. “The firebox slides into the rough framing of gas Elevation fireplaces allowing builders to frame now and offer fuel choice later.”

The Riverside Outdoor Gas Fireplace is designed for the booming outdoor market. Its non-combustible framing ensures cost-effective and hasslefree installations, with a clean face and finishing flanges for a modern look. According to Scott, comfort and design flexibility are elevated with the first-

ever optional Prestige outdoor heat and exhaust management system.

The new Galaxy Outdoor linear fireplace features a wider viewing area to maximize the fire experience. Prospective buyers who visit the showroom can view the multicolored LED ember bed and wind guard lighting, along with a 304SS firebox for aesthetic outdoor use. “The optional Prestige Heat & Exhaust Management system provides enhanced comfort and control,” Scott adds. “The zero-clearance design makes installation easy—single-sided with see-through conversion kits are available. New 50-inch, 62-inch, and 74-inch sizes are available.”

BRITISH FIRES

Bestselling models at British Fires Ltd. (Christchurch, U.K.) continue to be found within The New Forest Electric Fire line—63-inch, 48-inch, and 75-inch models. The New Forest range has gained traction in North America, largely thanks to its focus on realism.

“The concept of the range is to be the model chosen if you want a more realistic look, whereas other models aim to offer multiple colors and features,” says Michael Athay, group managing director. “The sheer simplicity of the realism puts the New Forest in a strong place.”

Company officials recently released the Black Edition as an addition to the New Forest line. The new design incorporates what Athay calls, “a sleek piece of piano black glass in the rear of the fire to give a more luxurious feel to the fireplace. We found that there is more to explore for customers looking to bring the tones of the room down to a cozy and

soft feeling. The piano glass retains the look in the fireplace with minimal reflection and even produces a more crisp flame effect.”

Retailers who install eye-catching British Fire showcases are converting interest into new business. “The proof is in the pudding and specialty hearth retailers who set up lifestyle displays in showrooms see an increase in their sales,” Athay says. “Electric fireplaces have evolved enormously over the past few years and have quickly become the ‘Focal Point’ of the room and not just relied upon as the heating source.”

Design engineers also developed technology to enable the heater to be more discreet, which enhances the flame effect. “A patent application was made, and this was recently granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office,” Athay adds. “Our branding under the name ‘British Fires’ exudes quality, and an attention to detail in everything we do.”

RENAISSANCE FIREPLACES

Renaissance Fireplaces started when Ray Bonar began building his dream home in the Laurentian region of Quebec in 2003. Bonar wanted a large, decorative, high-end, sealed-door fireplace as a central focal point of his living room. At the time, no available units came close to answering his needs.

“He set out on a fireplace project to respond to not only his needs but a gap in the market,” explains Don Bonar, Ray’s son and vice president of residential products for Renaissance Fireplaces, a division of Industrial Chimney Company (St. Jerome, Quebec). “Ray loved Rumford fireplace designs based on Count Rumford’s plans from the mid-1700s.”

After years of design, engineering, and testing, the Renaissance Rumford 1000 debuted in 2008. It is a prefabricated fireplace with full guillotine-style screen and door that disappears into the wall above using a counterweight pulley system. It was the first nonmasonry Rumford-style fireplace to hit the market.

Rumfords have shallow but tall fireboxes with a narrow throat. Angled sides project heat into the room, and a curved throat helps reduce air turbulence. The result is long, tall flames and aesthetically pleasing fires. “The design lends itself to fast-starting fires and lots of radiant heat, even if it was not built for heating,” Bonar says. “The factory-assembled unit is zero clearance and can be installed in a single day rather than several days compared to modular masonry options or even weeks when compared to a site-built masonry.

“When it first appeared, not only was it immediately in demand but it won the International Design Exhibition Award, the Clean Air Award from the

U.S. EPA, and was the first product to collect three Vesta Awards from Hearth and Home magazine. The Rumford 1000 is still one of our most soughtafter fireplaces.”

SHERWOOD INDUSTRIES

In the evolving landscape of home heating, Sherwood Industries Ltd. (Vancouver, British Columbia) has distinguished itself through three brands: Enviro Fireplaces, Urbana Luxury Fireplaces, and Uptown Electric Fireplaces. Their main focus has been flame technology, exemplified by the recent launch of Enviro’s RZ41 Zero Clearance Gas Fireplace, which showcases advanced fire under log burner technology.

“Sherwood is also developing an innovative ‘fire in log’ technology for Urbana,” says Jamie Yousief, marketing manager. “While both fire-in and fireunder log technologies have been explored, Sherwood has managed to seamlessly integrate flame with a log like never before, resulting in what we consider to be one of the most visually stunning flame presentations yet.”

Another standout is the UE35 Electric Insert/Fireplace from Uptown, which offers customers a choice between standard lighting technology and an LCD version for a range of experiences from lifelike to highly realistic. According to Yousief, Uptown is notable for being the first to introduce an authentic real wood western timber log set to the North American market, including a BIRCH log set to launch soon, exclusive to the UE35.

“Urbana Luxury Fireplaces continues to perform strongly,” Yousief says. “This product line has seen steady growth, particularly with its expansion into outdoor products. A highlight is the new HALO firepit series, which includes the impressive Spyder burner technology, creating a beautiful halo of light around the firepit’s body. These firepits deliver up to 170,000 BTU in a sleek, durable stainless-steel design, with a concrete finish option coming soon.”

ORTAL NORTH AMERICA

Officials at Ortal North America (Columbus, Ohio) have been busy introducing five new trim options to its gas insert line, as well as the company’s

first-ever line of electric fireplaces, showcasing holographic flames. Meanwhile, Ortal’s Wilderness Collection continues to perform as a top seller, thanks to its flame-through-log technology, which delivers a realistic fire experience.

“Another standout feature is our passive cool wall technology, which allows combustible materials to be placed right up to the glass,” says Gina Almaguer, director of marketing. “This makes it possible to position a TV or artwork just 4 inches above the fireplace without needing a blower or fan. With over 300 models, including the Wilderness and our signature Evolve models with natural flame aesthetics, we also offer bespoke designs to cater to unique client needs.”

Dealers are supported by Ortal University, a comprehensive training program introduced in 2024. Dealers may attend Ortal’s Columbus Design Center for two days of hands-on training, led by senior technicians.

“This program is tailored to meet each dealer’s experience level through different tiers of our Ortal Academy, ensuring that both new partners and longterm dealers can enhance their product knowledge and technical skills,” Almaguer says. “Education is a

core value at Ortal, and we view this program as an investment in the long-term success of our dealer network, enabling them to provide exceptional service and expertise to their clients.”

In the midst of a busy 2024, Ortal welcomed Elizabeth Margles as its new CEO. “Margles brings a wealth of experience in sales, marketing, and operations,” Almaguer says. “Her strategic vision and proven track record of building brands and driving sales growth make her the perfect fit to lead Ortal into its next chapter of growth. She is passionate about uniting our A&D community and enhancing the collaboration between our sales team and dealer network.”

CAMINA & SCHMID

In December 2024, Camina & Schmid Inc. (Bissendorf, Germany with U.S. office in New York) earned U.S. and Canadian certification to offer North America its Lina G 30-24 and Lina G 36-28, both fireplaces with traditional designs.

“In Q1 2025, Camina & Schmid are preparing for certification and the North American launch of a

stunning 42-inch traditional appliance, which will round out our line of traditionals,” says Gary Kenneth Lindberg, North American sales manager. “The audience can see it burn live in Las Vegas during IBS, and in New Orleans during HPBExpo.”

Bestselling units are four linear fireplaces, with end users selecting them for the contemporary, European design, coupled with realistic split-wood, flame-from-log experience. “The split-flow valve we feature from Maxitrol allows for a 75% turndown, extending the burn season,” Lindberg says.

“Designers love that it can be finished with any combustible or non-combustible material, and our double-glass, no screen barrier view into the fire is totally unobstructed. We move air with physics versus fans, so our fireplaces are always whisper quiet. We’re German designed, engineered, and built.”

Lindberg describes the company as a “boutique offering of linear and gas fireplaces, and our specialty network of dealers work with discerning clients looking for high quality, uniquely positioned product offerings.” Part of that discernment comes from a flame picture that “rivals the genuine article, and that look resonates with the end user in search of the feel and aesthetic of a true wood fire.”

HUSSONG MFG

Hussong MFG Co., Inc., maker of Kozy Heat Fireplaces (Lakefield, Minnesota) is continuing to expand its Nordik series. Heather Hussong Reasoner, vice president, hints at a new unit this year, but details will have to wait until IBS or HPBExpo for those who wish to see the innovations in person.

“The Nordik Series remains a bestseller thanks to

EVO-elevated burners that create a realistic look of the fire going around the logs,” Hussong Reasoner says. “We have had huge success with our Nordik Series— between the DV, Inserts, and now Tall Linears.”

Even the best products may not sell without great-looking displays and Hussong Reasoner says eye-catching showrooms are always worth the investment. “Appeal to the five senses and have a few displays that customers see right away that will make them stop and say, ‘That’s what I want!’ Local designers may be willing to come in to help design a display if you refer business to them. If nothing else, all of the paint companies like Benjamin Moore advertise their colors (or color palette) of the year. Google Images can you give you literally thousands of ideas for new display looks.”

As for product selection, how much is too much?

innovations on the horizon,” says Anastasia Marcakis, co-owner. “For new construction, the Astra Series—particularly the Astra 32 and Astra 38—has become a favorite among dealers, often chosen as versatile alternatives to the discontinued Kozy Albany and Z42. Dealers have embraced these units for their versatility, efficiency, and compact design.”

For remodeled homes, the Lumis 32 fireplace insert is a popular option for its spacious firebox and expansive viewing area—offering functionality and an appealing design.

“Creating engaging showroom displays that highlight fireplaces as the focal point of a room is a great way to inspire customers and help them envision how it could transform their space,” Marcakis says.

It’s an age-old question and Hussong Reasoner comes down on the less is more side. “It seems like most dealers are cutting down on the number of brands in their showrooms so that they can concentrate on becoming product experts on just a few key brands,” she says. “Too many choices are not only confusing for the customers, but hard on staff.”

SUPREME

Supreme (Montreal, Quebec) continues to enhance its product line with several launches planned for 2025. Following the success of the Lumis 32, one of the industry’s largest inserts, Supreme is expanding the series with the Lumis 16 and Lumis 22. Both feature refined designs and advanced performance.

“Our growing range of complementary products includes the recent addition of log racks, with more

“Building strong relationships with designers and architects is another smart move. It positions your business as a trusted partner for home projects and sets you apart from the competition.”

Supreme products include variable burn rate air control, so users can easily adjust the heat output. Fireboxes are lined with cast iron, which adds durability and retains heat exceptionally well. “We’ve also developed patented technologies that make our products user-friendly and low maintenance, so they’re practical and reliable,” Marcakis adds.

“Another key factor is the versatility of our designs, which makes it easy for homeowners to integrate our fireplaces seamlessly into their unique spaces. To support our dealers, we also provide territory protection, giving them exclusive access to our products in their markets.”

M Divine Design

A

Maryland fireplace shop creates a profitable retail niche that specializes in architecture and design.

ost fireplace retailers start out product focused with an emphasis on sales volume and then, over time, add services such as design, restoration, and repair. In 1994, when Brad McCready, owner of Cambridge, Maryland-based McCready’s Hearth & Home, began working for his parents’ fireplace company, he had a different vision. “If I had gone into this business to sell volume, I would have quit in one year.”

That’s because McCready’s skills in architectural design and historic restoration were perfectly suited from the start for expanding the business into a one-stop, full-service design center with a high level of customer service.

Before joining his parents’ hearth business, McCready had considered restoring yacht interiors because he was intrigued by renovating small spaces. He had just graduated with a degree in drafting and architectural design. But at that time, his parents, who had been running McCready’s as a masonry company specializing in commercial work and fireplace/chimney restoration, convinced their son to be a part of the family business.

McCready teamed up with well-known industry chimney specialist Eddie Pleasants, who developed a cast-in-place chimney lining system called CRS-2000. “I worked with Eddie across the country building the company and increasing our dealer network,” McCready says.

McCready eventually took what was his parents’ company and transformed it into a niche hearth business that specializes in selling products and design services for customers with new homes or high-end renovation projects.

STUNNING SHOWROOM

His knowledge of the chimney sector, combined with his interest in fireplace products, led to the opening of a 20,000-square-foot showroom in

2009. Currently, the store has between 40 and 50 burning and static heating appliances displayed in inspiring vignettes.

Meticulous detail went into the showroom’s fullsize fireplace and stove vignettes because he wants customers to be able to envision what a specific hearth setup would look and feel like in their own homes. Recognizing that discerning customers have a variety of design preferences, he created cozy, lifelike vignettes that represent different styles and materials.

“The last thing I wanted was a showroom that looks like a car lot with fireplaces lined up in rows,” he says. “We have a variety of looks on display— contemporary, historic, traditional—with different mantels and surrounds. Customers are very visual and like to see and touch products.”

Unlike a big-box retailer, McCready’s store is design-centric, creating an experiential response for customers as they browse the displays. “When a customer walks in, we want them to become engaged and inspired,” he says.

This focus on design is one of the reasons the business has grown steadily. Many customers are unaware of what the store offers until they visit. “They come in to purchase a fireplace, but after we do the site visit and offer suggestions, they end up wanting much more,” McCready says. “What would have been only a $5,000 fireplace purchase leads to a $20,000-$30,000 ticket because they also want stonework, a mantel, or built-in bookcases.”

McCready’s background in drafting and design means he does most of the drawings himself, which he prefers. “I like to see things from beginning to end, so I find this part of the job very fulfilling.”

With a steady stream of business and a four- to eight-week backlog on most jobs, McCready is surprised that there aren’t more hearth retailers with a similar business model. But for McCready’s, it’s the only store of its kind in the region, which means customers come from a wide area, including Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C., Annapolis, and Baltimore.

Situated on the beautiful banks of the Choptank River, Cambridge is one of the oldest colonial cities in the nation. A welcoming community spirit and historic maritime heritage attract many retirees and owners of second homes, which has been a boon for the business. “Since COVID, housing sales have really taken off,” McCready says. “There’s a lot of new construction but also tons of historic home renovations.”

STELLAR SERVICE

McCready’s service-oriented hearth business attracts a wide range of customers. Whether the customer enters the store with little product or

design information or has numerous examples from Pinterest and architectural magazines, McCready spends considerable time chatting with them to understand their goals. “My sales approach is to listen to the customers’ wants and needs, and then I try to bring them to reality,” he says. “This allows me to be creative in an industry that is often based solely on function.”

McCready works with many architects and builders who send their clients to him since they know he possesses the design services that result in show-stopping hearth installations.

The store is known for its numerous manufacturer lines, giving customers many options. “When considering the lines to carry, I like to research the quality, longevity, and business model of the manufacturer to determine if they would be a good fit.”

Currently, McCready’s offers products from Mendota, Valor, Enviro, Napoleon, Urbana, Ortal, Kingsman, Vermont Castings, Harman, Hearthstone, Supreme, Jøtul, RH Peterson, Grand Canyon Gas Logs, MF Fire, Modern Flames, Outdoor GreatRoom Company, Stoll Industries, Osburn/Valcourt, Renaissance Rumford, Pacific Energy, Rasmussen, Big Green Egg, and Monessen.

His most popular brands are higher-end lines such as Urbana, Ortal, Valor, and Mendota. “We also do very well with cast-iron wood stoves made by Vermont Castings, Jotul, and Hearthstone since these

units are beautiful and function seamlessly.”

Currently, many customers are drawn to clean lines, which makes double glass units appealing. McCready notes that these units are perfect when other aspects or details in the room add to the fireplace for a seamless look. “Fireplaces are always a focal point in a room, but they also must blend in with the surrounding environment and client’s taste.” Linear fireplaces remain popular, but instead of the standard, narrow designs, McCready is seeing more interest in taller versions with greater viewing area. “This taller version tends to soften the modern look, so it looks less harsh in more traditional homes,” he says.

Overall, the store’s clientele seems to prefer a more traditional look, since it’s located in a historic area. Modern farmhouse designs are still popular, creating interest in contemporary gas units, but traditional wood stoves also perform well.

McCready’s has three in-store employees and six field technicians who deliver top-notch service. Lily, a Goldendoodle, serves as the store’s greeter. McCready believes strongly that the key to business is treating customers fairly. “Of course, you have to be smart to run a business successfully, but if you don’t treat a customer right, they won’t come back.” Being honest and forthcoming with each person who walks in the door is McCready’s guiding principle, which leads shoppers to become buying customers

and eventually repeat customers.

Because of the store’s superior reputation, it no longer relies on print and television advertising. Eighty percent of the new business is word-of-mouth, stemming from existing customers, builders, architects, and interior designers.

McCready encourages customers to bring in photos of their residential spaces, so that he can be on the same page in terms of their design preferences. “I want the fireplace to complement their existing surroundings,” he says. “The last thing I want to do is steer them in a different direction. Accommodating their wants and needs is essential.”

By listening carefully to customers, McCready’s has successfully grown into the stellar hearth business it is today. But McCready also recognizes that staying abreast of changes in the industry and the latest products and services is essential.

As active members of Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) and Mid-Atlantic Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (MAHPBA), McCready and his team each year take advantage of the educational programs offered at HPBExpo. “Ninety percent of the time we’re at the conference, we’re in classes, whether it involves NFI certification or education sessions,” he says. “It’s always rewarding to take home what we learned to make the business stronger.”

Barbecue BE ACON

With an emphasis on “all things barbecue,” West Coast BBQ Shop has emerged as a haven for grill aficionados.

Understanding the ideal product lineup that resonates with regional customers is part art, part science. Just ask Brian Bushfield, general manager at West Coast BBQ Shop in San Diego. Back in 2011, the retail store in California was created with the primary product focus of offering exceptional hot sauces for grilling aficionados.

“Not being located in a tourist area, we noticed how long it took for a customer to go through hot sauce,” Bushfield says. “So we brought in seasonings, rubs, and BBQ sauces and did really well and turned our store into a BBQ store.”

Since expanding the company’s repertoire to include “all things barbecue,” West Coast BBQ Shop products now include everything from stand-alone barbecues to outdoor kitchens. Pivoting to incorporate products that cover all facets of the grilling and barbecue space means West Coast BBQ Shop has emerged as a beacon for local and regional grilling aficionados who have a passion for the art of grilling and smoking meat.

In fact, providing the finest barbecue essentials, along with exceptional customer service, has put the company on the proverbial map of the best places for barbecue enthusiasts to shop. Bushfield and his team

have also been able to pivot well to a product category and overall industry that is constantly evolving.

“The [pandemic] took people from cooking indoors to grilling outside,” Bushfield says. “With social media and technology, everyone is sharing their grilling experience. Grilling has gone from old school into the digital age, being able to operate your grill from your phone.”

MORE THAN A STORE

Indeed, the team at West Coast BBQ Shop prides itself on understanding the nuances of quality barbecue equipment and cooking techniques. They also

embrace the technological advances that have been integrated into the products they sell. They have focused on curating an exceptional array of equipment, woods, sauces, and rubs that are ideal for beginners and seasoned pitmasters. As such, Bushfield and his team shower customers with exceptional customer service that keep them coming back for more.

In addition, the company makes a concerted effort to connect with consumers in unique ways, offering onsite classes, recipes, as well as how-to videos on the company’s YouTube Channel. The result? West Coast BBQ Shop is considered the “go-to”

source for barbecue enthusiasts in the San Diego region.

For instance, the company offers a hands-on Holiday Cooking Class for customers interested in using their barbecuing skills to create a memorable Thanksgiving feast—with a barbecue twist, of course. The class showcases tips and tricks from pitmasters to help customers learn how to perfectly roast and smoke a turkey, as well as create memorable sides and desserts for their family and friends joining them at their Thanksgiving table.

Patrons look forward to the various classes that the store holds throughout the year. As Bushfield explains, the

goals for the cooking classes include teaching customers about food safety, as well as the proper ways to prep meat—everything from trimming to injecting flavor into meat as well as the proper way to select and add seasonings to different types of meat.

“In some classes, we also teach attendees about the differences between charcoal, gas, pellet, and stick burner grills,” Bushfield says. “And they are able to learn about the different facets of smoking, grilling, roasting, and searing each type of meat. We also teach them how to learn to cook by touch and looks rather than by time and temperature. Finally, our classes explain the correct way to cut meat for serving, such as cutting across the grain on beef.”

BESTSELLING PRODUCTS

Having been in business for 12 years means that Bushfield has a solid under-

standing of the products that today’s barbecue consumers are interested in and thus fills his store with products that help them achieve their goals.

“Some of our bestselling items are the Big Green Egg charcoal grill, RecTec pellet grill, and people are looking for wireless thermometers and temperature control units,” Bushfield says. “People are losing interest if grills are not compatible to a phone or digital devices.”

These days, more and more consumers are gravitating to small, mom-and-pop, family-owned retailers. That’s because family-owned enterprises typically offer a hands-on, personal experience for consumers who may have a lot of questions about the best equipment and accessories in their barbecue journey. Bushfield recognizes this, and as such, puts a great deal of emphasis on offering the ideal brand-building customer experience.

“We are family owned and operated and our number one goal is customer satisfaction,” Bushfield says. “We have customers coming from near and far because of our grilling knowledge and customer service.” The West Coast BBQ Shop accomplishes this by sharing its knowledge through hands-on demonstrations on the grills it sells, as well as through Sample Saturdays.

On Sample Saturdays, Bushfield and his team set up a grill and cook everything from wings, sliders, tri

tip, jalapeno poppers—just about anything you can think of that would appeal to today’s barbecue customers. “We showcase different types of rubs and seasonings so customers can actually taste the seasoning on food,” Bushfield says. “We also use different grills, including charcoal, pellet, and propane grills to prompt the type of grill our customers would enjoy grilling on.”

And while earning a solid reputation for offering exceptional grilling products and impactful customer service has earned Bushfield and his team an impressive customer base, they also utilize other marketing tools to reach their customer base. “We are heavy into social media, demos, classes, and events in order to make sure our customers feel confident grilling,” Bushfield says. “We love sharing our BBQ knowledge.”

than dealing with customer service through email or via online chat room.”

During the last several years of being in business, West Coast BBQ has faced a series of big challenges including having to deal with competition on the internet, as well as competing with prices and availability. “After helping a customer select a grill or other products, we may find out that they bought these items online,” Bushfield says. “We are frequently reminding our customers it is much better to buy a grill locally for the in-person customer service rather

Looking ahead, Bushfield will continue to keep his finger on the proverbial pulse of the grilling industry—expanding his knowledge of consumer interests and equipment evolution within the category.

“We think technology will play a big part from the way a grill starts to being able to control the temperature of their grill—whether it’s a charcoal grill, pellet grill, gas, or a propane grill,” Bushfield says. “We are excited to see what the BBQ industry makes available to grillers, and we will continue to share our love of BBQ to our customers, family, and friends.”

A Treasure in Idaho

Patio Life has been a breath of fresh air for residents to find a wide assortment of quality outdoor furniture.

Patio Life (Meridian, Idaho) puts the small in small business. It’s been seven years since Jason and Sara Slatter opened the doors to their hometown specialty patio shop. Today, the thriving business is living proof that the brick-and-mortar shopping experience is alive and well. The dynamic husband-and-wife team have introduced Idaho residents and businesses in the Treasure Valley to the world of luxury outdoor living—spoiling them with the best products and family-oriented service around.

The idea for the store came about after the Slatters finished adding a pool to their backyard and were looking to add a few pieces of outdoor furniture. To their surprise, it was impossible to find anything locally, and they didn’t want to purchase from a big-box retailer or online.

“In a place like Idaho where people are passionate about the outdoors, you would think there would be an outdoor living store on every corner,” Sara Slatter explains. The frustration prompted the tenacious stayat-home mom of five children to open a specialty store that catered to people like herself. “Our area is also one of the fastest growing in the nation, so my husband and I saw it as an opportunity and took it.”

A DESTINATION SPACE

Framed by a backdrop of blue skies and lush forests, Patio Life is a destination retail space located on one of the busiest roads in town. Slatter’s main objective when opening the store was to create a place for people to explore and feel happy. “It’s my personality. I love to entertain. I love a party. I wanted to create an atmosphere with a warm and welcoming feeling.”

The 5,500-square-foot showroom is designed so shoppers can see something new and interesting at every turn. It is bright, airy, and easy to navigate. “I want people to discover the many ways they can create a personal outdoor sanctuary they love. Our realistic furniture vignettes give them ideas that they can easily recreate at home.”

The Slatters have discovered that many people are unfamiliar with luxury patio furniture because

it hasn’t been available locally. They are new to design-driven styles, textures, and materials, and haven’t experienced sitting in a piece of outdoor furniture that’s as comfortable as something inside their home. “It’s not unusual for someone to stop in with the intention of just buying a dining set to outfit their entire backyard—just because that’s what they grew up with,” Slatter says.

The sales staff is trained to ask customers the right questions so they can find something that fits their lifestyle. The store features a full design center that allows customers to see, feel, and choose fabrics to personalize their furniture. “Nothing makes us happier than transforming an unfinished yard with a 6x8 concrete slab into something fun, beautiful, and lasting that they can use every day.”

As a neighborhood store, Slatter has made it a point to offer merchandise at a wide price range. “While we specialize in high end, it’s possible to carry a product mix that’s within reach of everyone in our communities—whether it’s decorative patio accessories, hot tubs, fire pits, Adirondack chairs, or whole seating groups—we want anyone who is interested to have a choice.”

FAMILY FOCUS

Being a mom, Slatter understands how hard it can be to shop with small children, so the Slatters have made Patio Life 100% family friendly. The showroom has lots of kid spaces to keep them occupied. “There is nothing in the store that can be ruined or broken so the adults are able to relax and focus on shopping.”

Kids are invited to sit and color, play with Legos, watch one of two big screen TVs or go on an in-store scavenger hunt. The staff even hands out Patio Life-branded yo-yos and measuring tapes they can take home. “The kids use the measuring tapes to play a game that challenges them to measure the width of tables, the height of chairs, and other things around the showroom. It’s really a lot of fun,” Slatter adds.

There is also a station with crayons, pencils, and sticky notes where the kids

SHOWROOM SHOWCASE

can write encouraging/funny comments or draw pictures and put them on a special message wall. “When our kids were young, the last thing my husband and I wanted to do was take five kids into a furniture store. If there was a showroom like ours, we wouldn’t have hesitated.”

The store also caters to residential designers, and has a profitable commercial and HOA division with experience that ranges from HOA pools to restaurant patios to outdoor retail common areas. “We started out doing a lot of model homes with the builders in town and that opened the door to commercial.” Residential sales make up the majority of Patio Life’s business, but commercial and design work is a close second.

The Slatters are a united husband-and-wife team that play off each other’s strengths. “I am the creative one who builds relationships with customers and he’s the organized one who does the books. It works for us,” Slatter says, adding that they’ve always had one or two of their adult children working on the delivery crew as well.

“I think having our sons be the ones who drop off the furniture, set it up, speak to the customers, and help with any issues creates a true small-business experience. It makes customers feel very much a part of the Patio Life family when they interact with a family member every step of the way.”

Word of mouth has proven to be the store’s most effective form of advertising, and it often starts with a

simple customer review. Every customer is asked to leave an honest review of their experience with Patio Life on Google. “It gives them the opportunity to write what they feel,” Slatter says. “By writing a review, it puts the experience in the forefront of their mind so they’re more likely to mention it to others on the golf course, with their neighbors, or bring it up at a family reunion.

A good reference from a customer means so much.”

One thing that opening Patio Life has done for Slatter (personally) is it has bonded her to the community with other small and women-owned businesses. “Being a part of a small town is something special. We are honored to be able to serve our communities, make donations, support schools and organizations—that is

what I love to do.”

As for the future of Patio Life, the Slatters often discuss the possibility of opening another location because the area is growing so quickly. The big question is when to do it. “It’s nice to have one store because we can pour all of our time and attention into it,” Slatter adds. “On the flip side, there is so much opportunity and adventure that comes along with having another location.”

Whatever the future holds, Patio Life has secured its spot in the fabric of the community. “A small business is not for the faint of heart, but it’s worth every minute. There is nothing more satisfying than making a customer happy.”

Patio Life offers luxury furniture that’s big on comfort and style.

FOCUSED GROW TH

With an emphasis on consistency, quality, and affordability, Empire Group has grown via acquisitions and an understanding of who they are.

EMPIRE GROUP INC. (BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS) HAS BEEN BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH SPECIALTY DEALERS ACROSS NORTH

AMERICA SINCE 1932. The fourth generation, family-owned manufacturer is admired for its manufacturing excellence, listening to its customers, and offering the breadth of products they need to thrive. Patio & Hearth Products Report sat down with CEO Nick Bauer, great grandson of founder Henry Bauer, for a closer look at how the dynamic company has forged its niche in the industry.

Who is the Empire Group?

Bauer: Our company proudly celebrated its 92nd anniversary last August. From our modest beginnings as a manufacturer of gas sheet metal heaters, we have evolved into a competitive player in the industry. When I joined the company in 2007, we started an ongoing journey of strategic growth that included the acquisition of several respected hearth, barbecue, and stove brands that has allowed us to diversify to meet the needs of our dealers. The vast majority of our products are made in our six North American manufacturing facilities with an emphasis on consistency, quality, and affordability.

What brands does the Empire Group offer?

Bauer: We cover all the bases for specialty retailers. For indoor and outdoor residential spaces, we offer gas fireplaces from White Mountain Hearth and American Hearth. Montigo fireplaces are designed for luxury homes and commercial settings. Our highend gas grills from Broilmaster and Primo Ceramic Grills (the only ceramic grill made in USA) have been our entry into the grilling space. Empire Stove products bring reliable warmth for homes looking for zone heating. Our wood brands include Osburn, Valcourt, Enerzone, Drolet, and Century. We are a low-key parent company. We don’t impose our corporate identity on all of our locations. Our brands are successful independent companies that have maintained their own identity. That partnership is what has made our formula work.

Our product team is our biggest internal head count team for that reason. We become more valuable to our dealers by aligning ourselves with partners that are better than us. When we look to buy a new brand to strengthen our portfolio, we consider things like company culture, advanced R&D, and customer relationships—that’s innovation.

How does the company stay fresh and relevant?

Bauer: Thankfully, we have sales reps who are unafraid to tell the truth about what’s going on in the field. They offer us a glimpse of reality because they work with dealers every day witnessing the good and bad. We also make it a priority to spend time with dealers in person.

Do you consider the company to be an innovator?

Bauer: I always laugh at the word innovator. It’s a cliché term that can have so many meanings. Innovation in our industry is not rocket science—anyone can do it. We aren’t going to the moon or curing cancer, we are building fire for a living. We invest a tremendous amount of money every year to develop new products that sell and make our dealers money—that’s innovation to us. It’s not about the individual home run products, but rather it’s about consistent base hits.

We host annual factory visits with 50-100 customers so they can tour our operation and ask questions. We normally go to a Cardinals baseball game or do some other fun activity as well. It is by far one of my most favorite times of the year because I get to put faces to names and hear honest feedback about our products and how we fit into dealers’ product mix. I’ve made some great friends during these visits. All are welcome—reach out to me.

What are consumers looking for in today’s hearth/barbecue products?

Bauer: Hands down, it’s quality and affordability. COVID and inflation have hit the industry hard with price increases of nearly 30% on every-

thing from materials to components and labor. With this in mind, for the next few years, manufacturers need to be focused on offering a value proposition that will make customers willing to invest their money on our products.

What product offerings are you most excited about for 2025?

Bauer: I was a product guy before I became CEO. It’s nearly impossible to call out just one or two favorites. One thing I can say is that I’m thrilled about our Montigo group of luxury fireplaces, which is our most recent acquisition. When we purchased the company 15 months ago, it was a great brand that just needed some extra care. We teamed up with Montigo and pooled our resources to restore it to its former glory. We brought in our engineers, hired tons of new talent—including a new head of R&D. It was a total team effort.

As a result of our hard work, I can confidently say that Montigo is stronger than ever for 2025. Dealers are going to be thrilled to see everything it has to offer at the HPBA show this year. It will be the first year that there’s no limit on burning fireplaces in show booths, so I’m anticipating there will be many more on display. We will be bringing triple the amount of burning units than we normally bring. If there is one year I encourage you to attend HPBA, it’s 2025.

Why do specialty retailers like to carry Empire Group products?

Bauer: I hope the reason is because we are easy to do business with—which is one of our top priorities. They like that we offer a complete range of products so they don’t have to deal with multiple manufacturers. We are a one-stop-shop when it comes to products, customer service, and everything in between—it creates a comfortable relationship.

They know we’re always consistent and will be there for them no matter what the marketplace or economy holds. We know who we are as a company, and we know who we are not. We will never claim we are the best—we are just proud to be who we are.

What factors do you think have led to the company’s success?

Bauer: One huge factor is our employees. We are fortunate to have a smart, loyal team that comes to work every day with great ideas, a good attitude, and are ready to work. A number of them have been with us for 50-plus years, including our longest-time employee, Carol Burtz, who celebrated 65 years of service last August. She is simply amazing, there is no other way to describe her service.

Another factor that has contributed to our success is partnering with dealers who have our same goals and values. We have many customers whose fathers and grandfathers worked with my father and grandfather. They have evolved alongside us over the years, trusting our decisions and buying our new brands as we introduced them into the market. We all share a vision that is going to take us into the future together.

What direction do you see the hearth industry heading?

Bauer: I think the industry peaked during COVID, and it’s going to take a lot of effort from us to get back to growth years. It’s time to reset and head in a new direction in the new marketplace where affordability matters. I believe there will be a considerable amount of consolidation in the future, which means there will be fewer manufacturers, distributors, and dealers. Those who remain will need to focus on what’s important to consumers. They will be the ones who are going to win the game and survive to the next generation. I’ve been doing this for 17 years, and I have about 25-30 years left. It’s my dream that my daughter or nieces and nephews will take over for me in the future.

What’s next for the Empire Group?

Bauer: The Empire Group is going to keep doing what it’s been doing for the past nine decades. We have expanded and now operate out of nine corporate and manufacturing facilities across North America—and we’re always looking for new product opportunities when the timing is right. Our strategy is about slow, methodical growth and being willing to take calculated risks that will benefit our customers. We love what we do and have a blast doing it. I want to thank all of our customers, friends, and peers for making this industry the best in the world.

PLETHOR A of Choices

Ultrafabrics offers residential customers a sensory-rich, artfully curated environment to enjoy with friends and family.

FROM POLYESTER TO NYLON TO MICROSUEDE, fabric innovation has been creating seismic shifts in consumer buying habits for decades. When these new materials were introduced to the market, they offered customers exactly what they wanted: A luxurious look and feel, yet they were easy to care for and affordably priced. And the combination always left buyers wanting more. In 1999, Ultrafabrics, helmed by CEO Clay Rosenberg and President Danielle Boecker, put its mark on the world of innovative fabrics by creating a leather alternative. “Our goal was to disrupt the performance fabrics category,” says A.R. Swan, director of marketing. “The fabric was unlike any other.”

Since its inception, Ultrafabrics has been focused on creating materials that embody the future. Swan notes that this is achieved by combining Japanese craftsmanship with cuttingedge technology. This allows Ultrafabrics to offer residential customers sensory-rich, artfully curated environments to enjoy with friends and family.

Ultrafabrics’ wares were first showcased in the company’s Brisa and Ultraleather collections, both of which set the stan-

dard for premier performance and tactile excellence. “These groundbreaking products inspired a trend in our portfolio, expanding our offerings to include a vast range of colors and grains,” Swan says. “This breadth of choice allows our residential customers to realize their creative visions and deliver exceptional results for their clients and brands. Today, we go to market in our residential business as Ultraleather and are very proud to support this unique and undeniably different brand.”

The company has since broadened its offerings, and recently refreshed the Pumice collection, one of its core outdoor offerings under the Ultraleather residential portfolio, to include 16 colors. The refreshed palette includes calming and sophisticated shades of Sandy Beige, Sunny Yellow, Coral Pink, Nautical Blue, Sea Green, and Dolphin Gray. “And it can stand up to whatever Mother Nature has in store,” Swan adds. “Whether it’s relentless sun exposure or sudden rain showers, the material will maintain its pristine quality.”

The fabric also stands up to everyday wear and tear and environmental stressors via its inherent EPA-registered anti-mildew, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties that help

to extend the life of outdoor cushions—while colorfastness to sunlight, perspiration, chlorine, and seawater prevents fading. “These powerful performance attributes, combined with the fabric’s understated textural aesthetic, make Pumice ideal for active lifestyle settings,” Swan says. “It also effortlessly complements our Coast outdoor collection and coordinates seamlessly with woven textiles to create extraordinary outdoor spaces.”

The Coast collection remains a bestseller in the Ultrafabrics portfolio. The line boasts a soft, luxurious feel in shades that are elegant and understated. And the recently added Black Moor shade provides a sleek, contemporized appeal, particularly when paired with wood finishes ranging from teak to weathered gray or whitewash. The new addition bumps the Coast’s color offering up to 17, alongside familiar shades of Snow Cap, Beacon, Dusty Earth, and Stem Green.

Meanwhile, the company’s tried-and-true Brisa Frontier collection continues to excel with its classic vintage leather appeal, delivering a rustic aesthetic that complements both metal and wood finishes. “We attribute much

Desire for FIRE

With a commitment to continuous innovation and product evolution, Mendota Hearth offers a wealth of hearth options.

FOR MORE THAN 123 YEARS, MENDOTA HEARTH has been providing gas-powered products for consumers. Originally founded as the Johnson Gas Appliance Company in 1901, the company’s original vision was to manufacture gas lights, industrial irons, and industrial furnaces. As part of its growth, the company evolved, expanded, and embraced a wealth of new technologies that helped Mendota Hearth become the preeminent manufacturer of gas fireplaces.

“The vision for the company has been the fire—always the fire,” says Ron Schinnerer, sales and marketing North America, Mendota Hearth/NetZero Fire. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the company transitioned from wood to gas fireplaces to meet consumer interest and demand in gas fireplace design and construction.

Fast forward 40 years, and consumers’ interest in gas fireplaces is at an all-time high, as governmental restrictions on wood-burning fireplaces emerge and the aesthetics, technological innovativeness, and overall design of gas fireplaces continue to capture the attention of consumers.

“Fuels have become a part of most retail sales conversations,” Schinnerer says. “We are seeing an increase in customers wanting to have their products meet their needs from shape to heat output. They are looking for the custom off-the-shelf product. Mendota meets this need by offering a depth of shapes and sizes with an industry leading décor pallet.”

CONTINUOUS INNOVATION

With a wealth of fireplaces options, Mendota Hearth has captured a large percentage of the marketplace, and the company continues to fuel consumers’ interests with new innovations—including the new 360 FireIn Stove that boasts ultra-realistic gas flames as part of the FireIn burn system, which wraps the burner inside the logs, offering a more realistic flame field. “Pushing the FireIn burn technology across the Fullview fireplace lineup will pull dealers and customers to lean into Mendota Hearth,” Schinnerer says.

Recently, Johnson Gas introduced the NetZero E-one, a sustainable holographic electric beauty with a true dual-burning fire without compromising on emissions or gas consumption, offering a real, patent-protected, three-dimensional fire with depth and grace with the ability to be installed with ease. Because this innovative fireplace does not require venting or gas lines, NetZero E-one can be installed in almost any space.

“More and more consumers are drawn to this innovative fireplace because it provides the warmth and hearth experiences

they are looking for, as well as realistic flames, glowing embers, and crackling sounds,” Schinnerer says.

In addition, as Schinnerer further explains, consumers gravitate to NetZero E-one because if its customization options. Thanks to the simple, intuitive remote, hearth consumers can customize flame height, ember intensity, tone, lighting, and the sound of burning wood for their specific environment. During warmer months or in warmer climates, the dancing flames on and behind the logs offer a true three-dimensional effect to produce the look of an inviting fire, without the heat.

Another product that Johnson Gas has introduced to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers or those with constraints of venting or gas line installation, is the NetZero Waterplace. Utilizing pure water vapor to create dancing, rolling flames that have the allure of a conventional fire, the Waterplace does not produce any emissions. Homeowners enjoy the full spectrum of color-changing LED lights that can be set against a backdrop of logs, media, or continued on page 75

Repurposing Plastic

POLYWOOD uses recycled plastic to create beautiful, durable designs that resemble wood.

LONG BEFORE SCIENTISTS REVEALED THAT MICROPLASTICS IN THE OCEANS ARE DESTROYING MARINE LIFE AND ECOSYSTEMS,

founder and CEO

Doug Rassi of Syracuse, Indiana-based POLYWOOD had a vision to create long-lasting, stylish outdoor furniture from recycled plastic, such as used milk jugs. His foresight and entrepreneurial spirit led to the founding of POLYWOOD, one of the industry’s leaders in sustainable outdoor furniture manufacturing.

Back in the 1970s, the iconic Keep America Beautiful’s “Crying Indian” public service announcement inspired Rassi to explore ways to combine environmental stewardship with furniture manufacturing. At that time, curbside recycling had taken off, so making outdoor furniture from postconsumer plastic made perfect sense to him.

One of the best things about plastic is the material’s ability to be used infinitely. Unlike other furniture and household products, POLYWOOD’s durable designs hold up for decades. Since POLYWOOD makes furniture from recycled plastic, it is doing its share to prevent waste from streaming into the oceans and in landfills.

“POLYWOOD is a truly circular manufacturer of durable furniture that can be enjoyed for generations,” says Megan Pierson, executive vice president

of business development for POLYWOOD and the 2024 chair of the board of directors of the International Casual Furnishings Association. “We create infinitely recyclable lumber from reusable plastics with a zero-waste mindset, meaning furniture returns and 99% of production scrap are reprocessed into lumber once again.”

Since all the company’s furniture is made in the United States at its manufacturing plants in Syracuse, Indiana, and Roxboro, North Carolina, it also minimizes environmental impact with efficient delivery.

All furniture is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), an extremely durable type of plastic that can be infinitely recycled. Although most people think of plastic as being disposable, Pierson points out that the lumber used in making POLYWOOD’s furniture is built to last and comes with a 20-year warranty, which is unheard of for most patio furniture made from wicker, wood, or metal. “Lately, more than ever before, sustainability is in the forefront of customers’ minds. They feel good about owning long-lasting outdoor furniture that was made from ocean- and landfill-bound plastic,” Pierson says.

Customers also love that the furniture is weather resistant for all climates—even in harsh sea/salt coastal areas—and is easy to clean and maintain. The lumber never needs to be painted, stained, or sanded. Traditional wood can rot and splinter, and some metals are prone to rust, so many customers prefer POLYWOOD’s faux wood construction. Eco-conscious consumers also prefer recycled material because it lessens the impact of deforestation that traditional wood products may cause.

Consistency and attention to detail are bench-

marks of the company’s manufacturing operation. Machines process, clean, flake, and pelletize the plastic bales. Vacuums then move the pellets into storage silos until they’re ready to blend with extra materials before becoming POLYWOOD lumber. Before the boards are cut, they are colored with dye and formed (in a heater) to match the size needed for specific pieces of furniture. Then, the boards move through cooling tanks, and a CNC machine is used for cutting.

STYLISH DESIGNS

Sustainability isn’t the only quality that sets POLYWOOD’s products apart from the competition. Innovative design is another reason the company has grown into such an outdoor furniture powerhouse.

The classic Adirondack chair was POLYWOOD’s first design and is still very popular today. Since POLYWOOD’s furniture is built to last for generations, it focuses on timeless designs that never go out of style. The company’s designers take iconic designs, such as the front porch rocker, the Adirondack, or the Parsons dining table and transform them into durable, all-weather furniture using POLYWOOD lumber.

POLYWOOD also prides itself on constantly adding fresh new collections. This past year, the company introduced a new line of children’s outdoor furniture, featuring Adirondack chairs, rocking chairs, picnic tables, benches, and dining sets. The pieces are appealing to children and their parents because they mirror the style and comfort of the adult versions.

“Customers have been thrilled about our kids’ furniture launch,” Pierson says. “They love that they can

Ref ined & Refreshed

Coyote Outdoor Living introduces the latest generation of its outdoor cooking lineup with a product overhaul that includes interior and exterior modifications.

FOR 2025, COYOTE OUTDOOR LIVING (CARROLLTON, TEXAS)

released an overhaul of its entire lineup with features designed to improve the performance, appearance, and convenience of its grills and cooking appliances. With the introduction of a thermocouple, the company has made safety a priority, offering peace of mind to its customers.

“We listen to our customers and take their feedback seriously,” says President Jim Ginocchi. He adds that there can be a lot of fear around

using a gas grill, especially if customers aren’t familiar with them. The addition of a thermocouple in the new lineup is unique and is an effective tool in measuring temperatures and ensuring the safe operation of a grill.

A COMPLETE REFRESH

When designing the next generation of Coyote grills, the company looked at every aspect of each product’s interior and exterior, with no part or feature overlooked. This included the addition of a

spring-loaded hood, backlit knobs, black briquettes, upgraded handles and deliberate changes that enhance the overall cooking experience and appearance of the grill.

“The refresh is going to affect different types of grills,” Ginocchi says. “Grills are going to have a new look, and they’re going to have new internal features.”

This includes the company’s gas and pellet grills. The C-Series grills cater to grillers of all experience

Passionate Sustainability

C.R. Plastic Products continues to focus on environmentally aware and innovative products.

WHEN C.R.

PLASTIC PRODUCTS CUSTOMERS

ARE SITTING IN LUXURIOUS CHAIRS WATCHING THE WAVES ON THE LAKE OR CHATTING WITH FRIENDS AROUND A CRACKLING FIRE, they can indulge in all the comforts that friends, family, and the great outdoors have to offer. But they can also indulge in the knowledge that the comfy furnishings they purchased have helped make the planet a little greener.

C.R. Plastic Products has been creating sustainably minded products for more than 30 years. Since the company’s inception in 1994, the family-owned, Stratford, Ontario-based company has been leading the charge on sustainability in outdoor furniture. “Sustainability is our passion,” says Meaghan Robinson, director of sales and marketing. “Our products are made with the planet in mind.”

She notes that the organization has a unique perspective on the circular economy—and being involved in each step of the value chain allows them to fully understand the impact that one process has on the next. This drives them to produce environmentally aware products and packaging. Together, with its parent company, Ice River Sustainable Solutions, C.R. Plastic Products uses recycled plastics that

are transformed into beautiful outdoor furniture. “Our products add value and continue to develop the growing circular economy in Canada.”

Product innovation is also a point of pride for the organization. Not only do their products have a luxurious look and feel, but designers have “engineered the ultimate landing zone between the chair seat and back, creating the best seat in the house,” Robinson says. And this comfy technology is apparent in CRP’s Charleston high-back deep seating group, which debuted during the July Casual Market in 2024. “Charleston is the company’s biggest deep seating group with more of a high-end luxury look and feel. We had fantastic customer feedback on this grouping during the markets.”

NEW PRODUCTS

Two exciting new product groups were also released in 2024 in addition to several product reintroductions. The first is CRP’s new Napa Dining Collection, which seats up to eight people and has a clean and contemporary look, Robinson says. It’s accompanied by the Napa Dining Chairs, which also have a contemporary design. “This is a great addition to our current dining collections,” she adds. “We are launching a 72-inch version of this table as well as a new 48-inch round dining table for 2025.”

And to keep consumers warm while they

relax with family and friends, CRP introduced its first fire tables. This collection answers the call of customers who were in search of a matching fire table for their existing CRP products.

“This is a highly anticipated product category for our business, particularly because our lumber fit and finish is unique in the marketplace,” Robinson says. The product category launched with a 48-inch rectangular fire table and a 46-inch round table in classic shades of white, beige, black, chocolate, and slate gray.

CRP’s product collections are also designed to meet customers’ aesthetic needs of the moment. Executives are seeing trend growth in the dining category and the deep seating category, as consumers continue to gravitate toward spending time and money outside. These two categories ensure lots of alfresco dining, relaxation, and entertaining options.

“Consumers are looking for a real designer feel while also having all the functionality and longevity that comes with recycled plastic furniture,” Robinson says. “High-quality product design that blurs the line between interior furniture and exterior furniture is where we are focusing our product innovation and designs.”

Bull Outdoor Products establishes itself as a leader in the grill and outdoor kitchen market with a laser-focused emphasis on quality, innovation, and dealer support.

Mark Nureddine, the founder of Bull Outdoor Products, has something in common with Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos, the founders of Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon, respectively.

No, Nureddine’s business hasn’t evolved into a multibillion-dollar brand like the others, but all four companies were started in a garage. Literally.

And they have all become successful businesses because the founders identified a product or service that was so innova-

TOP RIGHT: A countertop pizza oven is one of the most popular add-ons for consumers designing a Bull Outdoor kitchen.

tive that the marketplace didn’t even realize it was needed at the time.

In Nureddine’s case, the product was outdoor kitchens. It’s admittedly a niche product that will never be sold to the masses, but demand has steadily gathered steam during the past 30 years, and a kitchen is now a key component of outdoor living spaces in many high-end homes and resorts.

“Our goal has always been to make something that works great and lasts forever,” says Wade Fortin, marketing director. “We use all of the best components and never skimp on quality.”

FORGING ITS OWN PATH

The company has built its leadership position by occasionally eschewing conventional wisdom—it avoids Wi-Fi controllers and other electronic bells and whistles found on many grills today— but more often by using components that aren’t commonplace. That gives the company the confidence, Fortin says, to offer a lifetime warranty.

Bull Outdoor grills, for example, are made with solid stainless steel cooking grates and feature single-piece, dual-lined hoods, which prevent rust. Its cabinets and storage units are made of a marinegrade material that is built to withstand extreme heat and cold temperatures. And all its kitchen components are modular so they can be installed in a variety of configurations. That makes it easy to add items such as an ice maker, side warmer, refrigerator, or pizza oven—features that also keep dealers happy because they increase the average sales ticket.

More recently, the company partnered with California Polytechnic Institute to design a proprietary heating system for its upper-end grills. Dubbed ReliaBULL technology, the system delivers consistent temperatures across all parts of the cooking surface.

Fortin explains that temperatures are typically warmer at the rear of the grill because gas collects at the back of the unit. The ReliaBULL technology, however, moves some heat to the front and keeps the temperature the same throughout the cooking surface—eliminating one of the biggest frustrations for anyone who cooks on a gas grill.

Currently, products are sold through more than 900 dealers and distributors worldwide. The list includes barbecue specialty stores, highend pool and patio shops, landscaping companies, contractors, and other companies involved in the building trades.

Many landscaping companies and contractors, in particular, also work with interior designers who custom design an outdoor living space along with the rest of the customer’s house. “A large part of our customer base is people aged 55 and above who own their own home and may be

BOTTOM: The company’s cabinetry and storage units are made of marine-grade material that is built to withstand extreme heat and cold. continued on page 77

In a nutshell, Fortin believes that simple philosophy—from which Bull Outdoor has never wavered—is what has made the company a leader in the outdoor kitchen category. “Mark and his partner set out to develop the ‘outdoor kitchen concept’ and came up with ways to use a grill in a more enclosed environment,” Fortin says. “That’s how we got our start.”

of our success to the fact that these products are engineered to withstand the elements and perform well in multiple environments, including multifunctional spaces indoors and out,” Swan says.

Throughout Ultrafabrics’ long history, the company has grown into an organization with a global reach. While its primary mill is in Japan, it manufactures leather alternative material with the support of exclusive partner mills. And its U.S. operations are responsible for importing, distribution, sales, and marketing. Ultrafabrics customers can be found all over the world, as well. Its primary market is in North America, but the organization also works with companies across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

FOCUS ON CUSTOMERS

The company has also seen plenty of industry trends come and go over the years from its diverse range of customers. Shifts have occurred in material demand, as well as color, style, and overall aesthetic. The pandemic, for example, influenced the popular merging of indoor and outdoor spaces, creating strong growth in the outdoor category, including the number of fabric options, frame designs, and accessories made available.

Executives have also noticed a rise in biophilic design practices, which are known to evoke feelings of peace and calm. Additionally, demand continues to increase for sustainable, responsibly sourced materials in both fabric and furniture. “It’s important criteria in a cus-

tomers’ decision-making process,” Swan says.

And to answer the industry’s demand, the Ultraleather outdoor collections are PFASfree and include at least 50% rapidly renewable and/or recycled content. It all converges under the customers’ belief that design, performance, and sustainability must unite, Swan notes.

FOCUS ON THE GLOBE

And speaking of sustainability, the company’s position as a global manufacturer has strengthened its commitment to be a good global citizen. Ultrafabrics has upgraded its business practices to maintain a commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing—and it’s all in the name of creating a healthier planet.

Not only is the business committed to creating durable products, which helps cut down on the global use of raw materials and energy, but it also manages its water consumption and wastewater pollution. Polyurethane-coated fabrics, which are free from PVC, plasticizer phthalates, and formaldehyde, are also used as opposed to other alternatives that pose environmental and health hazards.

But they didn’t stop there. Ultraleather products are about 1/2 to 2/3 the weight of genuine leather or PVC. The lighter product weight reduces environmental loads

liners, allowing consumers to fully customize the look of the fireplace.

So how does it work? Quite simply, the NetZero Waterplace uses only water vapor to create naturallooking flames that provide always-on ambiance without any emissions. It can be installed virtually anywhere, with a constant fuel supply provided by a water line. The Waterplace can also be connected to create up to 20 feet of continuous ribbons of flame, offering end users the ability to truly define their ideal fireplace aesthetic in their home.

“Our NetZero Waterplace has changed the game of the traditional hearth experience for the hearth retailer, offering the opportunity to work with a fuel that is harmless and safe for all,” Schinnerer says. “With the Waterplace and the NetZero E-One leading the way in sustainable luxury hearth products from a pillar in the industry, we are seeing our retail partners meet a need for their customers not met before. The growth of the sustainable luxury hearth products has a very unbridled path moving forward.”

One of the newest additions to Mendota Hearth’s product lineup is the 360 FireIn Stove, which boasts the company’s FireIn Log Package. The 360 FireIn Stove is reminiscent of a time gone by, when families and friends gathered around the stove sharing stories and enjoying the warmth. Mendota Hearth’s new FireIn burn system, which is being incorporated into its hearth products, offers an extremely precise flame field. The company’s FireIn burner wraps the logs around the

burner, creating an even more authentic and beautiful flame pattern, while signature glowing embers and hand-painted logs set the mood.

“The fire of our systems make Mendota Hearth stand out in the industry,” Schinnerer says. “The new FireIn burner has taken over the showroom floor. Customers are simply drawn to our burn. We set the standard on every showroom floor. As showrooms offer ‘Good, Better, and Best,’ we find ourselves being the unit and flame that all others are compared to.”

PARTNERS IN PROGRESS

The Mendota Hearth team works closely with retailers in helping consumers select the ideal fireplace. As Schinnerer explains, the company’s digital configurator helps the end customer build and design every one of the company’s units. “This tool takes them throughout the many options we have.”

Quite simply, dealers can help consumers select the specific gas fireplace design, based on the aesthetics, quality, and functionality they are looking for. And for consumers who are looking to transition their woodburning fireplace to gas, Mendota Hearth’s digital configurator can help identify the best customizable gas insert that easily slides into existing masonry or factorybuilt fireplaces. “Our design tool allows customers to choose from a range of fire media, interior linings, and fronts to build a customized fireplace or insert that fits their style,” Schinnerer says.

And as more and more consumers set their sights

for carbon-intensive transportation and use. And a reduction in carbon slows the negative impacts of climate change. Ultrafabrics also transitioned its U.S.based warehouse from New York to California in 2023. This provides a more direct route for products coming in from Japan and will save about 200,000 miles each year to bring its products into the United States for distribution.

With its feet planted firmly in the present, Ultrafabrics’ executives are poised to take the company’s operations into the future, specifically in the areas of product development and design.

“We are excited by the growth of the Ultraleather brand with retailers, especially in the outdoor category,” Swan says. “As we speak, our product development team is hard at work on research and development that includes technology enhancements, new collection design, and validation testing.” He notes that customers can also look forward to on-point color selections in the coming years thanks to the company’s ongoing trend analysis. “Stay tuned!”

on “buying American,” Mendota Hearth’s products fit the bill, thanks to the exceptional American-made craftsmanship that consumers have come to expect from the company.

“Mendota Hearth is a brand that delivers on its promise of luxury and quality in every aspect of its products,” Schinnerer says. “With our design tool, stunning flames, and durable craftsmanship, Mendota Hearth is the perfect choice for homeowners who demand the best in aesthetics, quality, and performance from every element of their home.”

SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIPS

The company’s largest growth segment in recent years has been with licensed collections because they drive awareness to a broader consumer audience, resulting in more in-store customers. One of its largest licensed lines is Martha Stewart by POLYWOOD. “Martha Stewart and POLYWOOD share the same values,” Pierson says. “We hold quality designs, functional beauty, and American-made craftsmanship in the highest regard. The Martha Stewart by POLYWOOD offerings draw inspiration from Stewart’s picturesque Skylands estate in Maine and feature traditional Craftsman designs defined by strong vertical lines, lending an elegant feel. The line’s latest collection, Acadia (released this year), and its popular collection, Chinoiserie (released in 2022), perform extremely well with customers, dealers, and designers.

In a press release for POLYWOOD, Martha Stewart states, “Acadia celebrates the traditional Craftsman furniture that fills the rooms of my 1925 Carriage House in Maine. The collection embodies quiet elegance in

Like the Chinoiserie Collection, Acadia features stylish, weather-resistant designs available in seven earthtoned hues that effortlessly blend with any setting. Current pieces include dining (starting at $655) and deep seating (starting at $1,995).

The Martha Stewart lineup has been a win-win for both the iconic home décor designer and POLYWOOD. Not only has consumer demand been growing for these collections, but Stewart also chose POLYWOOD as the “Innovator of the Year” at the Martha Stewart brand summit, held in October 2024.

POLYWOOD has also been successful in growing its partnership with Country Living. In the summer of 2024, it launched Wovendale, a stylish collection with lattice detailing that features a fresh, sophisticated look. Included

levels, and the S-Series adds an element of luxury for customers looking for the highest quality gas grill. The pellet grill also received upgrades in addition to its already high-quality Smart Drop feeding mechanism and innovative touchscreen.

The doors and drawers on all products have all been updated with the new rollout, as well as the interior lighting for a stylish effect that also makes it easier to cook at all times of the day—or night. “We’re changing the interior lighting, so there’s more light for cooking at night,” Ginocchi says.

Another unique feature in this third generation of Coyote Outdoor Living grills is a visual way to monitor the temperature of the grill while cooking. “We made a very cool feature where when it is off, it’s white, and then as the grill gets hotter, it turns red,” Ginocchi says.

CONSTANTLY IMPROVING

Coyote Outdoor Living made numerous, thoughtful modifications that collectively have a large impact on the entire line. “A lot of little things come together to make the product better as a whole,” Ginocchi says. “If you just change one minor thing, it’s not a huge deal,

but when you add the thermocouple with everything else, then it comes together to be a big change.”

Ginocchi explains that the company is continually looking for ways to improve its products, but this overhaul came about through months of meetings, discussions, and development efforts. While the company is always making product enhancements, this rebrand was comprehensive. “We make slight improvements all the time,” Ginocchi says. “We’re always trying to improve.”

The company’s customer service team, sales team, and other key employees collaborated on the best ways to improve and modernize its latest models. Coyote utilized feedback from customers and team members to implement meaningful changes to the lineup.

“The feedback is generated largely by our customers,” Ginocchi says. “It’s a huge part of the company and part of what makes it great. We are constantly trying to listen to what people want and what people need and their pain points, and try to make our product better.”

within this collection is a wide array of chairs, benches, tables, and even a popular 60-inch swinging bench.

With so many innovative outdoor designs, POLYWOOD is a popular manufacturer among U.S. specialty retailers. Expanding collections and customized fabric options appeal to store owners with discerning customers. “We have adopted our business model to ensure specialty retailers are set up for success all season long, by supporting them with strong digital tools and shipping directly to their customers when needed,” Pierson says.

The future looks bright for POLYWOOD. Pierson notes that 2025 should be very busy since the company will launch some exciting collections with new finishes and materials. Throughout the company, there’s a shared understanding that ingenuity, hard work, and commitment to sustainability are paying off.

“Customers do their research and are choosing brands and products that are sustainably made,” Pierson says. “They want to feel good about their purchases for decades to come, knowing they are doing their part to protect the environment. We feel good knowing we are doing our part to make those products.”

Through listening to feedback, implementing changes, and thoroughly testing the results, Coyote Outdoor Living has developed improved products that stay true to the brand and everything that makes it great, such as the high-quality components used in the construction of its cooking appliances.

“We tried to package it all in one and change the aesthetic a little to just modernize it, improve the exterior, and freshen up the brand,” Ginocchi says. “It is a big undertaking for all of us; we’re a small, but very dedicated team.”

know more about where their furniture comes from and how it’s made. “We are seeing a huge trend toward consumers’ heightened education and knowledge around sustainability,” Robinson says. “They want to purchase products that are sustainable. They want to make sure that they are contributing to investing back in the environment.”

To keep the planet green and healthy and to meet customers’ needs, C.R. Plastic Products makes no secret that the vertically integrated company grinds, melts, and extrudes all its lumber inhouse, which cuts down on its carbon footprint—and its products are made from up to 100% recycled plastic. “With the prevalence and urgency of climaterelated issues, sustainable products and companies are top of mind when making a key purchasing decision,” Robinson says.

And the high-quality products that consumers are searching for coincides with their desire to purchase sustainable products. Purchasing long-lasting products not only saves consumers money in the long run, it also helps protect the

planet. “People want their outdoor furniture to have lasting designs and be of the highest quality, so they aren’t repurchasing outdoor furniture every few years,” Robinson says. “Our furniture is made to withstand the elements and last for years to come.”

And to make sure that there’s enough high-quality product to meet just about every consumer’s needs, C.R. Plastic Products offers a full catalog of over 100 products, including 17 designer frame colors that range from sleek and contemporary to rustic and traditional—all designed to complement an outdoor space.

With such high demand for its product collections, CRP strives to get its furnishings into customers’ hands fast. The company employs over 100 workers at its Stratford manufacturing facility and has continued to grow and expand its manufacturing footprint into its current 300,000square-foot facility. Its U.S. distribution center in North Carolina also offers the Quick Ship program with select, bestselling products shipping in 1-3 days.

While many dealers sell individual grills, the focus is on complete kitchens, which retail from about $6,000 to more than $20,000. The more expensive kitchens include extensive cabinetry—often in an L-shaped design—as well as features such as grills with ReliaBULL technology, and pizza ovens, which Fortin says are increasingly popular despite the high cost.

In addition to North America, products are sold in Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as several countries in Europe and South America.

Fortin notes that the company is very selective in choosing its dealers and distributors, and is careful not to grant dealerships to retailers in proximity to existing dealers. “We have to make sure we aren’t selling against them,” he says.

Plus, the company doesn’t sell its products online. The only direct-to-consumer sales are made from a small factory outlet store near its corporate headquarters in Lodi, California.

FORGING AHEAD

U.S. dealers a great way to increase sales revenue this season on our bestselling products with fast ship times and no inventory commitment,” Robinson says.

Although executives have their hands full with product marketing, design, and delivery, they are looking to a future with one key focus: product sustainability innovation. “We are always exploring new ways to increase our postconsumer recycled plastics content in our materials,” Robinson says. “We are also consistently working on reducing our carbon footprint through vertical integration and

set by the new administration in Washington, D.C.

Any of those issues could have a negative impact on the economy, he says. “It’s a very unsettling time we live in, especially for manufacturers of outdoor living.”

As a result, Bull Outdoor is renewing its focus on customer service and refining its marketing message to show consumers how an outdoor kitchen can increase the value of their home. “Since we are a small company, we can react quickly to changes in the marketplace,” Fortin says. “We still have to try to connect with the consumer and show them the value of investing in an outdoor kitchen.”

The company is also exploring new product lines with sustainable materials, product lines at different price points and further expanding its current product offering to grow market share and explore new sales channels. “Our sustainability story has been the foundation of our business,” Robinson says. “It’s at the core of everything we do.”

He adds that the company is also trying to broaden its dealer base in 2025 by exhibiting at the annual Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), which is set for Feb. 25-27 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The company will highlight its outdoor kitchen cabinets, which now feature synthetic wood construction and granite countertops. And it also will unveil a line of infrared heaters called Powerwarm that can extend the outdoor living season and still provide plenty of warmth in windy conditions. company was pleased with the results of last year’s show and plans to exhibit at the 2025 event, which is scheduled for Oct. 22-24 in Louisville, Kentucky.

For 2025, Fortin says the company has been somewhat conservative in its sales forecasts because of continued sluggishness in home furnishings sales, home renovation projects, and sales of new and existing homes. In addition, there are concerns about a possible strike by East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers in January, continued unrest in the Middle East, and policies that may be

In addition, Fortin says the company plans to continue its support of For A Reason (FAR), a nonprofit group that provides tuition assistance, educational materials, and family support for impoverished students in Haiti. The money is funneled through the Grill For Good Foundation, which has raised more than $250,000, built two kitchen facilities for rural school communities, rebuilt numerous homes that have been destroyed by recent natural disasters, and allowed more students to continue their education.
