JUMPING RIGHT INTO THE WATER IS THE PERFECT WAY TO GET YOUR FEET WET IN THE CASUAL FURNITURE INDUSTRY!
If you’re lucky enough to survive the plunge, you may find that your lifelong career has just begun.
I have been extremely fortunate to experience my 40+ year journey through three different facets of the industry, and each one has given me a unique perspective.
MANUFACTURING
Manufacturers expect and require it all—strong sales experience, great communication skills, and organizational abilities that can accommodate the many aspects of their companies. You are often the face of their business, and you must portray the epitome of professionalism, knowledge, and trust that they have placed in you. They invest their time and money in you, and they expect you to give them the best of yourself.
At the same time, you need to sell yourself so that your customers and those you manage will be comfortable with you and respect your authority to represent your products and company. And it helps if you can do it all effortlessly (or at least appear to!)
From my experience, it was beneficial that I was always able to go to the companies’ top executives to discuss any issue that was pertinent to my performance. Knowing that you have the comfort of open communication at the top level will ensure your performance for them is appreciated and at its highest level. Having their respect and support is critical to your success.
While in manufacturing, I was also fortunate to have the freedom to go into the factories to speak with the craftsmen and workers who are the heart of any manufacturing operation. Their contributions are often not appreciated enough, and they don’t always get the recognition they deserve. A little “thank you” or pat on the back goes a long way and kept me grounded. Your customers will appreciate that you have taken the time to learn your craft from the bottom up.
I always found that working trade shows was invaluable to my ability to appreciate the hard work and money that manufacturers put into
Outdoor Trifecta
their products. From coordinating the show, assembling and setting the product up, and tearing it down, there was no aspect of the job that I didn’t participate in.
My time in the manufacturing world laid the groundwork for everything else that came after that period in my career.
INDEPENDENT SALES
Being an independent sales representative in the casual furniture industry was a bright shiny new adventure for me. I was my own boss, at last!
As I learned from the best in the business, I developed a newfound respect for the reps that I had once managed. I came to appreciate learning what retailers expect from their manufacturers and reps by listening to what THEIR customers were asking about as I spent time in their showrooms. With the consumer being the ultimate customer, it

is critical that we open up to their level if we are to truly appreciate what they are looking for in products for their homes and businesses.
Our sales reps are like a little clique within our group. Their jobs include so much more than dropping off catalogs and writing orders. They train our retail stores’ staffs, they participate in store sales, they fix broken furniture, and they run interference between manufacturers and retailers. They support our industry functions often on their own time and dime.
I honestly believe that being an independent rep is the most underappreciated segment of our industry. Time on the road and being away from families and home takes a unique type of person. They often juggle many lines with many programs from a variety of manufacturers. It can be time consuming to coordinate all the information that is provided. They come prepared and always present their products with a wealth of expertise, professionalism, and enthusiasm.
On the other hand, it may be the most fun job since you get to set your own schedule so that you can spend quality time with your customers.
RETAIL SALES
Coming into the retail segment of our industry was perhaps the biggest learning curve. I went from one line of product to 6-8 lines of products, to over 40 lines of product—each with their own collections, fabrics, frames, and pricing! Thankfully, some of the lines we carry are some that I was already familiar with!
In addition to working with the general consumer, we also have a thriving commercial department serving HOAs, hotels and motels, and restaurants. This is an entirely different facet that requires a completely different language, skill, and expertise.
Retail sales can be so rewarding since you get to know the people who bring our furniture into their homes. They can also be quite challenging and sometimes frustrating as this can be rather personal. The trick is to find the balance that rewards your sales skills with your empathy toward your customer. The ultimate prize is a repeat customer who tells their friends about you and your store! That’s where the satisfaction of a job well done is realized.
No matter how you choose to fashion your career, be sure to keep a sense of optimism and enthusiasm. And remember to be a shining light because you never know who is watching you! You can’t lose with any of these facets of the industry. I look at it as a tremendous opportunity to be a part of a unique group that is unlike most other career choices.

EMBRACE THE UNCONVENTIONAL
IN THE QUEST FOR UNIQUE AND ENGAGING OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES,
there exists a fine balance between the conventional and the imaginative. Urbanology Designs, known for its dedication to creating spaces that are beautiful, unique, and unpretentious, champions the idea that outdoor environments can be transformative, reflecting a seamless blend of functionality, style, and personal expression. Not only that but exposure to the natural world is essential for our wellness, productivity, and sense of calm.
This exploration invites specialty retailers and designers to consider both modular and non-modular furniture as vehicles for innovation, alongside creative layout and design strategies that challenge the ordinary.
Outdoor living spaces are unique in their ability to merge the indoors with the natural world, serving not just as extensions of the home but as bridges to nature. This duality provides a rich palette for creativity, where the lines between formality and whimsy, elegance and ruggedness, blur to create environments that invite relaxation and inspiration. The choice of furniture—be it modular pieces known for their versatility or traditional options that anchor a space with a sense of permanence—plays a pivotal role in this creative process.
In the spirit of versatility and adaptability, modular furniture offers a dynamic solution for those looking to infuse their outdoor spaces with functionality and flair. A single modular set can transition from a cozy lounge area to a sprawling seating arrangement for entertaining, embodying the essence of
innovative design. My own outdoor wonderland is composed of a modular furniture set. But the true artistry in using modular furniture lies in its combination with non-modular elements, striking a balance that caters to both change and constancy.
While modular furniture offers flexibility, non-modular pieces bring character and stability to outdoor living spaces. Think of a handcrafted stone bench, an intricately designed metal gazebo, or a wooden swing that becomes the centerpiece of a garden. These elements anchor the space, creating a sense of permanence and continuity. Pairing such pieces with soft, movable seating options or portable fire pits can introduce an element of surprise, blending the fixed with the flexible to craft spaces that are as dynamic as they are comforting.
The true innovation in outdoor spaces often comes from how we envision the layout and integration of design elements. Repetition in design is a wonderful way to create a unique and unexpected impact.
For example, place a row of hanging swing chairs under a porch or pergola, or extra loungers poolside to create a wow moment reminiscent of your favorite vacation. Also consider dual seating areas when you have the space. Creating multiple conversation areas is an interesting way to break up the “standard” setup. This works both for large and smaller gatherings and offers a unique experience in each zone. One may host a fire pit and the other an outdoor beverage/game table for late summer nights.
Thinking beyond furniture arrangements, consider elevating the experience with multilevel decking that offers varied perspectives of the garden, or incorporating a winding path that leads to hidden seating areas for solitude or intimate gatherings. Water features can be more than aesthetic additions; they can define the flow of space, guiding movement and creating auditory zones of calm.
Integrating smart lighting into landscaping not only extends the usability of outdoor spaces into the evening but also highlights architectural features, plants, and pathways, creating a magical ambiance that changes with the setting sun. Vertical
gardens, meanwhile, can serve as both art and privacy screens, offering a lush backdrop to outdoor living areas.
Don’t forget to accessorize. I can’t stress the importance of this. Just as styling and accessorizing your interiors with objects, textiles, and specialty items for hosting and entertaining, you need to do the same for your outdoor space. Think throw blankets, outdoor floor cushions, lanterns, trays to host food and beverages, beautiful drink pitchers and flatware, table linens, etc. The sky is the limit!
The collaboration between designers, specialty retailers, and homeowners is crucial in realizing these innovative outdoor spaces. Retailers bring insights into the latest trends and products, while designers offer the vision to weave these elements into a cohesive narrative. Homeowners’ personal stories and desires add depth, ensuring the outdoor living area is not just an extension of the home but a reflection of the people within it.
Interactive design sessions, where ideas and visions can be shared and experimented with, help in translating these concepts into tangible realities. I also love the idea of partnerships between designers and manufacturers. The designer brings fresh ideas, onthe-ground insights, and out-of-thebox thinking, while manufacturers bring their robust experience and vast industry knowledge. Such collaborations encourage a break from the conventional, pushing the boundaries of what outdoor living spaces can be.
At Urbanology Designs, we envision outdoor living spaces as arenas of endless possibility, where innovation meets individuality. By balancing the flexibility in the outdoor space while embracing creative layouts and design, we can create spaces that are not just places to live but places to experience. I hope to challenge the conventional, crafting outdoor environments that are a testament to creativity, functionality, and personal expression, all while keeping them beautifully thoughtful and unexpected.

Camina & Schmid Hosts Group of North American Distributors
North American distributors recently traveled to Europe for a Camina & Schmid training seminar held in Germany and The Netherlands.
Camina & Schmid is a fireplace manufacturer based in Germany.
The mid-July training event hosted North American distributors Monsma Marketing Corporation, Majestic Hearth Distributors, and The Foundry. During the weeklong event, Camina & Schmid sales, marketing, and product development staff trained distributors on all Camina & Schmid products and processes.
“We shared plans for the second half of 2024,” says Gary Lindberg, North American sales manager, “and we introduced all of our North
American partners to the Camina & Schmid team members across all three facilities in Rathenau, Germany; Bissendorf, Germany; and Dinxperlo, Netherlands.”
While Camina & Schmid has conducted dealer and distributor training many times, this was the first group from North America. In addition to the training, the group enjoyed a tour of Berlin and visited a fifth-generation wooden shoe factory.
“The group left well educated, well fed, and exhausted from a productive and fun six-day event,” Lindberg says.
“An exciting new product for the North American market was also introduced to the group, but you’ll
have to come to IBS 2025 or HPBExpo in New Orleans next year to see it.”

Pacific Energy Innovates for Environmentally Friendly Efficiency
Developing and certifying Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stoves can be challenging, but Pacific Energy made it happen for its Vista LE2 and Neo 1.6 LE2 models. According to Cory Iversen, vice president of sales and marketing, the advanced combustion management system (ACMS) is key because it assists the wood-burning stove and insert to manage and flatten out potential high and low-fire situations during the appliance’s startup and reload phases.
During testing and in real-world use, high-fire and low-fire situations can potentially impact the overall burn cycle and affect the efficiency and emissions of the stove or insert.
“The ACMS also helps with controlling the burn to obtain a longer, more consistent heat output throughout the entire cycle, leading to greater comfort and extended burn times and, as a result, less fuel consumption,” Iversen says. “The addition of Pacific Energy’s patent-pending, hands-off, ACMS technology provides an extra level of clean control to an already extremely efficient and robust industry-leading wood stove and remains catalytic free.”
Pacific Energy’s True North - TN25C electronic combustion assist and passive cat system are also part of a system that delivers consistent, reliable, real-world results. The “hands-off” electronic combustion assist requires no user interaction with the wood stove and ensures optimum heating efficiency and minimum emissions at all times.
Given the extremely high efficiency of the True North woodstove, a small, inline catalytic is enough to exceed the U.S. Biomass Tax Credit requirement of 75% HHV, with no user interaction required—and no bypass to operate. “The True North TN25C with electronic combustion assist and passive cat technology provides more consistent and longer burn times, using less fuel than any other wood stove in the same category,” Iversen says.
With an eye toward the long-term viability of the industry and ensuring technological advancements in home heating using biomass, Pacific Energy has invested in a new state-of-the-art hearth research and development facility. The space will facilitate product development and testing, product recertification testing, and long-term research into next generation low emission, high-efficiency wood-heating solutions. Company officials opened the R&D facility in July and the laboratory will allow researchers to work on multiple solid fuel, gas, pellet, and electric projects simultaneously. For the past 40 years, EPA certification on solid fuel products could last 10 to 15 years; but since the recertification of the entire product line to the new 2020 emissions standard, manufacturers must now have a continual development and testing cycle in place.
Pacific Energy’s mission from 1978 to now has remained the same. “Pacific Energy has always focused on bringing high-quality, robust, reliable and userfriendly products to market,” Iversen says. “Although many faster, easier, cheaper ways to get a product to market might be identified, if they are not better products; if they are not easier to operate, or if they are not as durable or as reliable, Pacific Energy will not compromise these fundamental attributes in bringing a product to market.”
Duravent Group Appoints Adam Soliman as Chief Commercial Officer
Duravent Group has announced the appointment of Adam Soliman as its chief commercial officer. Soliman brings a wealth of experience in sales and marketing leadership positions, having played pivotal roles in the growth of several renowned organizations, including Electrolux, Generac Power Systems, and most recently, The Chamberlain Group, where he served in critical roles leading growth and transformation across the organization.
Ultrafabrics Celebrates 25 Years of Textile Innovation
With its headquarters in Tarrytown, New York, a mill in Japan, and a successful business in the United Kingdom, Ultrafabrics has a lot to be proud of in its 25 years of designing and producing high-performing, next-generation, leather alternative fabrics known globally for quality and innovation.
“We began with a vision that this leather alternative could be a game changer, and we believed in its quality. We knew if we were strategic and built the company based on our values, we could grow it exponentially, and we haven’t looked back,” says Danielle Boecker-Primack, one half of the founding partners.
“We trusted our partnership with the mill in Japan, and when you have this level of trust, you can confidently build solutions for clients, one yard of fabric at a time,” says the other half of the founding team, Clay Rosenberg.
The company’s commitment to nurturing long-term relationships with clients and staff has kept it at the fore-
front of the high-tech performance fabric sector in 11 markets. Constant investment in sustainability and environmentally friendly manufacturing improvements have kept the brand ahead of its competitors.
A reputation for quality and innovation has taken the Ultrafabrics brand to the drawing board of many notable global brands. The brand has cultivated partnerships spanning many years with powerhouses in the architecture and design industry, including the 2024 announcement that Ultrafabrics is recognized as a Steelcase Carbon Reduction Leader.
Since it was founded in 1999, Ultrafabrics has sold over 40.6 million yards of fabric—this extraordinary output is set to hit 45.2 million yards by the end of this year. In 2024, revenues will reach $125 million.
In 2019, Ultrafabrics shifted its focus to delivering sustainability without sacrifice, keeping people and planet in mind, and setting industry-leading goals. The
company set up a clear sustainability framework to track progress and clearly show architects, designers, and specifiers where they are in the process.
“Sustainability is imperative, but we made a commitment as a premium product to never sacrifice quality and performance,” Boecker-Primack says.
Each product line comes with a comprehensive warranty program, but this is seldom needed as returns are rare. The mantra of the team is, “We know the power every specifier has, whether it’s launching a furniture line, or designing an aircraft or car interior, and we want to see you succeed. We offer a premium warranty because we see your vision and have your back.”
The top-line target is to ensure that all Ultrafabrics products sold to furniture, health care, RV, marine, aviation, and accessories markets would include at least 50% rapidly renewable and/or recycled resources by 2030. This target date was moved up to 2025, and achieved this year.
Ultrafabrics founders Clay Rosenberg, left, and Danielle Boecker-Primack celebrate the company’s 25-year anniversary.
“We were pleased to have surpassed our own goal by six years, but we can’t rest on our laurels,” BoeckerPrimack says. “2025 will see Ultrafabrics unveil a state-of-the-art new mill in Japan. The innovation in manufacturing, water circularity, and carbon emission reduction goals will be unmatched in the industry.”
Safe....and sound
Offer total peace of mind with dual thermocouple lightning protection, double glass barrier featuring heat-reflective inner pane, and tempered glass exterior. Easy app-controlled thermostat plus fully programmable ECO mode for a dynamic, individualized and efficient flame display. The four-log display with split-flow burner offers a generous 66% turndown, resulting in a heat range to suit every seasonal setting.
Soliman’s appointment comes as Duravent Group implements strategic initiatives to foster a new era of growth and innovation to increase market share, expand capacity and product offerings, and strengthen customer and supplier partnerships.
“Adam demonstrates specific core expertise in growing sales as well as in strategic marketing—key components in meeting the ambitious growth goals set forth by Duravent Group’s strategic planning,” says Simon A. Davis, president and CEO. “Looking ahead, we are enthusiastic about the opportunities to even better serve our customers as we build key strategic relationships and partnerships with Adam heading the commercial team.”
Duravent Group’s plan is to grow extensively in the immediate years to come, extending its market share to evolve beyond chimney venting and solidify its position as a leader in the venting and air control industries. Duravent Group’s brand portfolio represents a wide range of venting and chimney system products with a strong history of quality and innovation.
Agora Launches U.S. Distribution,
Names Heiman as USA Manager
Agora Fabrics, an international brand specializing in highquality outdoor textiles, has committed to the North American market and will begin to distribute its fabrics in the United States.
Its parent company, Sauleda S.A., has procured textile organizations in the United States to create Sauleda USA, which will in turn distribute Agora fabrics across America. Agora already has a presence in the United States, and it unveiled its newest fabric collection, Armonias, in July at the Casual Market Atlanta.
Agora, launched in 2011, is the result of two storied Spanish textile companies coming together to look to the future. Tuvatextil S.L., one of Spain’s top technical textile businesses, was created in 1997 and quickly expanded into new fields of textile distribu-
tion. In 2011, Tuvatextil joined the Sauleda group, a family-owned textile business created in 1897, and in the more than 125 years since, it has grown into a forward-thinking, environmentally friendly corporation. Tuvatextil and Sauleda’s partnership led to the advent of the Agora brand, which focuses on producing 100% solution-dyed acrylic fibers and fabrics for durable, stylish outdoor projects.
“Agora was named for the socio-political, economic, and administrative center of ancient Greek cities,” says Gonzalo Sabatés, CEO of Agora Fabrics. “In these agoras, various topics were debated and daily life was shared. We believe the Agora brand upholds these concepts as the core of both ancient and modern Mediterranean essences. Agora Fabrics allow for a sharing of experiences, celebration of life and simple joys, enjoyment of the outdoors, and simple relaxation in everyday life.”
With warehouses in Los Angeles and Spartanburg, South Carolina, Sauleda USA will be able to integrate successfully into the United States and introduce the Agora brand nationwide.
To emphasize its belief in this new market, Sauleda USA has named David Heiman the USA manager for Agora Fabrics. Heiman has already been hard at work preparing Agora Fabrics’ display for Casual Market Atlanta and brings much industry knowledge and expertise to the organization. Sauleda USA, Tuvatextil, and Agora Fabrics are excited for his leadership in the American market.

The SavoryOutdoors
Homeowners who love backyard cooking continue to propel the outdoor kitchen industry to new heights.
BY GREG THOMPSON
Within many modern outdoor kitchens, there is no “step down” when compared to the indoors. Sinks, refrigeration, storage, pizza ovens, and many other accessories complete a total outdoor picture that consumers love.
“Today’s homeowner is looking for an outdoor kitchen that provides all the cooking ability and convenience of their indoor kitchen,” says Amy Bortz, vice president of marketing at RH Peterson Co. “They want the ability to prepare the entire meal outdoors.”
Has that love of the outdoors translated into consistent demand? Most manufacturers believe the
answer is yes. “I don’t think the outdoor kitchen market has plateaued at all,” says Wade Fortin, marketing director at Bull Outdoor Products. “I believe it has begun to launch into new heights.”
Steve Ward, marketing director at Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens, did an outdoor living report in 2023, and he contends that findings are still highly relevant. “For those in the market to buy a new home,” he says, “outdoor living has become a must-have with three-quarters of Americans (75%) confirming they would prioritize a home that had an outdoor living space.”
If customers come in for a grill, why not pitch an entire outdoor kitchen? The 10 manufacturers represented in this issue’s spotlight can help dealers pique interest and capitalize on demand.
BULL OUTDOOR PRODUCTS
The latest launches from Bull Outdoor Products
(Lodi, California) have focused on enhancing the durability and aesthetic appeal of outdoor kitchens. Wade Fortin, marketing director, is particularly proud of the DuraBull line, which features HDPE (high-density polyethylene) material.
“HDPE is renowned for its exceptional durability, making it an ideal material for outdoor kitchens,” Fortin says. “It withstands harsh weather, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations without warping, cracking, or fading. This ensures that your outdoor kitchen remains in pristine condition year-round.”
The DuraBull line offers a range of colors and finishes that blend with multiple outdoor settings. The line comes standard with the award-winning Bull Angus four-burner grill and an outdoor-rated refrigerator.
Outdoor kitchens rely on accessories and additions to complete the picture, and Fortin confirms that tabletop pizza ovens have become “super popu-
lar and add a fun, interactive element to outdoor cooking. They are perfect for gatherings, offering a unique way to prepare and enjoy custom pizzas and other baked dishes. Our new Dual Fuel Countertop pizza oven allows you to cook with gas or wood depending on your preference.”
Fortin recommends that dealers offer bundled deals that include a built-in grill, refrigerator, side burners, and storage solutions at a discounted price. These practices encourage customers to purchase a full set, increasing the overall sale value.
“Host live grilling demonstrations and interactive
cooking classes with professional chefs or grill masters to showcase your outdoor kitchen equipment, providing hands-on experiences that highlight product features and foster a deeper connection with the brand,” Fortin adds. “Offer incentives for customers who refer friends or family to purchase outdoor kitchen products, expanding your customer base through word-of-mouth.”
COYOTE OUTDOOR LIVING
Coyote Outdoor Living (Carrollton, Texas) recently released its Woodfired Pizza Oven and Hybrid Pizza
MIDDLE: DCS Series 9 Grill, power burner, griddle, and storage from DCS Appliances
BOTTOM LEFT: Modanō 146-inch Grill & Fire Table
Island featuring Medallion finish cabinets with Truffle countertop, plus Lotus Balcony Stools with Medallion finish from Gensun
BOTTOM RIGHT: Built-In 700 Series Grill from Napoleon
Oven for 2024. According to Sarah Johnson, marketing manager, the pizza oven market is heating up and the market is ripe for a professionally made appliance that can fit into all consumers’ budgets—while adding an on-trend element to the outdoor kitchen.
“Our artistic design and well featured product will move our offering to the head of the class very quickly,” Johnson says. “The inclusion of the pizza oven tool set and ease of use will make our offering unique, and the versatility of using our FDAapproved oven to cook more than pizza will appeal to even the most discerning outdoor chefs.”
In addition to the pizza niche, Coyote is primed to offer consumer cooking products in all classifications—charcoal, gas, electric, and pellet. The company’s S series Gas grills feature stainless steel, a lifetime warranty, and professional high-powered cast burners—plus sear and rear burners.
“All these features plus rotisserie, smoker box and
hood, and panel lights for the price point that we offer is hard to beat,” Johnson says. “Our flat-top grill is also growing in popularity. The 30-inch size is perfect for a stand-alone BBQ or as an accompaniment to another grill appliance. It is also versatile enough to do breakfast, lunch, or dinner—and has the size to do all of them together depending on what’s on the menu.”
Coyote officials are continuing to focus on the entire outdoor experience, specifically the outdoor kitchen category. Products complement the space with refrigeration, sinks, storage, access, and grill accessories to allow customers to bring their indoor kitchen outside.
DOMETIC RESIDENTIAL US
As the marketing manager for Dometic Residential US (Cerritos, California), Matthew Frey has seen a definitive trend over the last two decades, namely that the outdoor kitchen has become a standard request for most residential backyards. Much like the deck, the driveway, or the garden, it’s on the list of projects. “We see a lot of opportunity to provide luxury products for more aspirational consumers who are looking to achieve that outdoor kitchen vision,” Frey says.
One of the benefits of Dometic acquiring the Twin Eagles line of products has been the expanded ability to meet that demand, which includes access to Dometic’s refrigeration lines. “A lot of the technology that they’ve developed over the last hundred years was applicable to outdoor refrigeration products,” Frey says. “We find that to be an excellent complement to our cooking products with the grills and gas accessories.”
Twin Eagles has fully adapted Dometic’s technology. “We’re launching a line of Twin Eagles branded outdoor refrigerators that will match the Twin Eagles grill products, but leverage the Dometic cooling technology,” Frey says. “The Twin Eagles branded outdoor refrigeration products are designed specifically to blend with the Twin Eagles line of grills and accessories.”
In recent years, Frey has seen growth in top-ofthe-line products, particularly the Twin Eagle
One gas grill—the “super premium” grill. “It’s a very high price point and it’s always been a flagship for us,” Frey says. “To see it take off in this post-pandemic environment has been interesting, and it indicates to us that luxury consumers are still interested in doing outdoor kitchens and have increasingly high expectations for features, amenities, and other aspects of the product that increase performance and convenience.”
DANVER STAINLESS OUTDOOR KITCHENS
Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens (Wallingford, Connecticut) has licensing agreements with Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens and Trex Outdoor Kitchens. All that brand diversity adds up to a wide variety of appliances and accessories for the modern outdoor kitchen.
Danver’s most recent debut is the Cosmopolitan
Kitchen, designed by Daniel Germani, creative director. The Mondrian-inspired Cosmopolitan Kitchen offers a fresh take with a modern, minimalist design featuring eye-catching storage.
“Perfectly balancing functionality with visual appeal, the new kitchen introduces the opportunity to integrate drop-in appliances like electric cookers and grills within the Cosmopolitan line,” says Steve Ward, marketing director. “Providing an all-in-one solution that can be used for cooking, entertaining, and storage, the kitchen further expands the versatility of the Cosmopolitan portfolio of tables and buffets.”
Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens is in the process of introducing the CUBE—previewed at IBS/ICFF 2024 but not available just yet. CUBE is Brown Jordan’s first-ever collaboration with global designer Luca Nichetto of Nichetto Studio. The bold new line introduces an architecturally-inspired design that embraces its modularity as a “design language” by calling attention to its modules through the use of distinct shapes, and the option to incorporate contrasting colors.
“The result is a stunning and unexpected new line with the flexibility to provide solutions for small, urban settings or to be built out for more comprehensive outdoor entertaining spaces,” Ward says. “CUBE represents a unique opportunity to further expand the brand’s repertoire amidst continued demand for outdoor living solutions.”
Meanwhile, Trex Outdoor Kitchens recently launched Trex Ready, the brand’s first-ever collection of preset layouts. The collection brings together some of the most popular layout configurations
with seven different kitchen options and six designer-curated powder-coat color finishes—each designed to maximize functionality and style. Ward adds, “To ensure long-lasting, hard-working products, Trex Ready features 304-grade stainless steel construction, soft-close drawers and doors, magnetic catches, and weather-resistant gaskets.”
KALAMAZOO OUTDOOR GOURMET
Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet (Kalamazoo, Michigan) recently introduced its Next Generation grill lineup, an expanded and advanced product launch featuring improvements across Kalamazoo’s flagship products.
The Echo Gas-Fired Grill is a prime example, offering more than 300 pounds of handcrafted stainless steel. “Built like a tank, the Echo delivers unwavering heat retention for consistent results and over 750 degrees of intense heat,” says Alexis Hiller, head of marketing. “Its heavy build quality and precision-engineered firebox results in a superior cooking experience and world-class performance that is second only to the Hybrid Fire Grill.”
Hiller confirms that the Hybrid Fire Grill enjoys
strong demand with consumers continuing to appreciate its performance, versatility, and craftsmanship. “Customers can cook with gas, wood, or charcoal to create incredible flavors,” Hiller says. “The innovative design allows users to grill, roast, sear, bake, or smoke and enjoy wood-fired rotisserie. It’s an incredible product that provides so much flexibility for cuisines, cooking techniques, and styles.”
With the launch of the new lineup, Hiller reports that Kalamazoo was the first U.S. manufacturer to incorporate safety valves with every gas burner in its outdoor cooking products. Each product uses custom-engineered valves designed to allow the flow of gas only when a flame is detected.
Demand for product diversity extends to clients looking for ways to customize their space and create a personalized outdoor kitchen aesthetic. “We are seeing growth in the area of color choice,” Hiller says. “We recently added eight beautiful standard powder-coated stainless steel finishes to our Arcadia line of cabinetry and refrigeration. These finishes allow clients to experiment with different looks ranging from creamy whites to moody charcoal grays and warm bronzes.”
CADENCE COLLECTION
Our new Cadence collection, designed by Chris and Jon Panichella, is crafted with sleek extruded and cast aluminum. Flowing lines seamlessly merge with repeated elements, creating a captivating rhythm. The wood impression finish options for the base structure ground the design in warmth. Elevate your outdoor space with this timeless blend of style and durability.
GENSUN CASUAL LIVING
Recent outdoor kitchen introductions at Gensun Casual Living (Rancho Cucamonga, California) have centered around mobile grill islands, making it possible for consumers to move their luxury grill to several areas of the home or commercial property. The increasingly popular grill islands have joined Gensun’s kamado cabinets and entertainment islands as three of the company’s bestselling offerings.
“We see mobile islands as a great opportunity to offer outdoor cooking in a variety of settings,” says Gray Dobbins, vice president of sales. “The hospitality market can make great use of cooking for poolside parties or other outdoor events where on-site cooking is beneficial.”
Practicality meets aesthetics with Gensun’s ability to coordinate the look of the outdoor kitchen with the company’s iconic furniture, providing what Dobbins describes as “one cohesive look and one of our strongest advantages.”
As a company known primarily as a furniture manufacturer, Gensun is able to offer extended payment terms for certain purchasing programs. “In general, outdoor kitchen cabinet producers do not,” Dobbins says. “They may offer 30-day payment terms, but that is all.”
Owners of single-family homes have responded, appreciating the benefits of outdoor living and entertaining. “We believe that there is still a lot of room to grow in the outdoor kitchen market,” he
says. “As younger demographics age and start families, their tastes will change from grills on carts to more sophisticated outdoor kitchen environments.”
DCS APPLIANCES
The latest offering from DCS Appliances (Auckland, New Zealand) is the Sear Burner Grill for Series 7 and 9 grills. According to Justin Monroy, director of sales, the Dual Rail with cross bridge design was specifically engineered to promote evenness of temperature and perfect searing performance.
DCS has also launched a Wireless Temperature Sensor that pairs with the SmartHQ app to provide true core temperature of food, as well as the ambient temperature of the cooking environment. “For outdoor cooking, it’s about quality and performance,” Monroy says. “We have high-quality stainless steel that will stand up to the outdoor environment and is built to last. High-performing outdoor products provide versatility in cooking methods and outcomes—providing a high level of
value to customers.”
Products come with a standard full warranty and a lifetime parts warranty, plus factory service in select areas. One current promotion offers a 10% rebate when customers spend $4,999 or more to build their ultimate outdoor kitchen. Monroy explains that these elements are part of a strategy to target luxury designers and architects, new homebuyers, and homeowners interested in renovating their backyard spaces.
“The outdoor kitchen market is growing rapidly and will continue to grow into the future,” Monroy adds. “The industry will continue to innovate products and services to meet the needs of current and future customers. Our products are built to last and provide our customers with the best experience in outdoor cooking. We stand behind our products and are confident our customers will love their DCS outdoor kitchen for years to come.”

Great Products, Great Service
RH Peterson is powering sales at specialty stores.
FINDING A TRULY EXCELLENT GRILL AND PROPERLY DISPLAYING IT ON THE SHOW FLOOR IS ALWAYS A GOOD START, but great brands also need to be widely available with efficient distribution. Quality and availability came together for Sam Hickey at Creekstone Outdoor Living in Spring, Texas, back in 2011 when Hickey began carrying FireMagic from RH Peterson.
A distributor in nearby Houston kept plenty of inventory on hand, so Hickey did not need to start with a large up-front investment. “FireMagic’s customer service is top notch and they have always stood behind their product,” Hickey says. “There have been very few issues, and they have always handled them in a timely manner and kept our customers happy.”
RH Peterson cultivates effective display programs and various specials at trade shows to help dealers with the company’s new and more popular products. Part of the popularity comes from RH Peterson’s made-in-the-USA philosophy. “That’s a big selling feature for FireMagic and RH Peterson products,” Hickey says. “They continue to refresh their designs and stay at the forefront of the industry in terms of quality and design. We have one local distributor that does a good job at keeping stock on hand and available for quick order fulfillment.”
One of the biggest selling points with FireMagic is the ability to provide a la carte options like the rotisserie backburner, charcoal insert, analog or digital temp gauges, viewing window, and more. It adds up to a competitive advantage over other premium grill lines that only provide the “fully loaded” versions.
The bestselling grill at Creekstone Outdoor Living is “far and away” the FireMagic a660i-7ean. As an oversized 30-inch model that comes with three burners and a cook surface larger than competing brands’ 36-inch versions, it fits a great mid-range price point that makes it an easy sell. The viewing window options are popular upgrades that are frequently added to a sale as long as they are properly shown on the floor.
“We have a nice 16-foot outdoor kitchen display in the showroom with all FireMagic doors/drawers, warming drawer, refrigerator, dropped power burner, and a Diamond Echelon 790 with a viewing window,” Hickey says. “Additionally, we show our bestselling a660i-7ean—
no rotisserie with analog temp gauge. We use social media and Google to promote our products throughout. We also do some regionalized and specialized print advertisements that are focused on our demographic.”
Kevin Sparks, owner of the The Mad Hatter in Alpharetta, Georgia, began selling the RH Peterson brand more than 20 years ago, including RealFyre gas logs and FireMagic grills. “We chose RH Peterson for the unparalleled beauty and quality of their products and their outstanding customer service,” Sparks says. “We were committed to offering the best products available to our customers, and after thorough research, we knew RH Peterson was the right choice.”
RH Peterson gas logs and burner selections provide an incredibly realistic look, almost indistinguishable from a real wood-burning fireplace, and the FireMagic grills are the finest on the market. All products are made in the USA and come with the best warranty in the industry, allowing customers to make purchases with confidence.
“RH Peterson’s support has been invaluable, offering generous display credits, catalogs, co-op pro-
grams, and incentives for our sales staff,” Sparks says. “We currently sell over 600 sets of gas logs per year. Our top seller for gas logs is the G-45 burner with Charred Oak or Charred American Oak. However, we have seen a significant increase in sales of the G-31 burners and logs in recent years.
“Additionally, FireMagic built-in grills and components are highly popular,” Sparks says. “The quality of these grills, with their industryleading burners and designs, makes it clear to customers that this could be the last grill they ever need to buy. RH Peterson has played a crucial role in our success over the past two decades, and we look forward to continuing this successful partnership for many more years to come.”
maintain its considerable momentum with the launch of a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) collection called the Artwood series. “It is a stunning blend of marine grade stainless steel and HDPE material,” says Chris Hartwig, sales and marketing director. “We are also happy to have launched a range of two prep stations that include prep surface area, storage space, and refrigeration.”
Hartwig reveals that the company’s “secret to success” is to offer an outdoor kitchen without the need to hire a contractor. “Add ‘plug-and-play’ outdoor islands to the mix and it’s a powerful combination,” he says. “Additional selling points are 304 stainless steel, lifetime warranty, state-of-the-art marketing programs, and an excellent post-purchase support system.”
Mont Alpi offers in-store point of purchase, staff training, and social media marketing targeted to dealers, adhering to strict pricing regulation to boost the odds of success for retailers. Hartwig contends that consumers (suburban homeowners between 30 and 65) will be drawn to the brand because, “Our grill is affordable and the ‘bang for buck’ is very appealing when compared to most of what is available in momand-pop retail stores. The value is also backed by a quality product that surpasses expectations.”
Ultimately, Hartwig counts himself as optimistic with a few caveats. “I think that outdoor kitchens will see overall growth but a slowdown in new brand entrants,” he says. “The outdoor kitchen market has become competitive. As new brands and market entrants realize that the grill industry is heavily populated and margin poor, they look to the top as a good place to start. This isn’t always the case as the consumer pool for this level of product is not infinite. Budget restricts the customer base.”
RH PETERSON CO.
Celebrating 75 years in business, the venerable RH Peterson Co. (City of Industry, California) is continuing to enhance its vision to boost the barbecuing experience with the Fire Magic line. As one example, the Fire Magic Pizza Oven offers the ability to cook a delicious pizza, but also functions
as a complete outdoor oven.
“The Fire Magic Pizza Oven cooks with a powerful 36,000 BTU and includes an 18-inch by 18-inch cordierite stone, baking rack, interior lights, and a ceramic glass window in the door,” says Amy Bortz, vice president of marketing. “Equipped with a thermostat set with touchscreen control, or your smartphone, you can set and monitor your Pizza Oven for perfect results.”
Meanwhile, the Echelon Gourmet Griddle provides 45,000 BTU and a 30-inch by 18-inch stainless steel cooking surface to easily prepare items such as fried rice, fajitas, and carne asada in the outdoor kitchen.
For those without access to natural or propane gas, or for those who prefer to use electricity to heat up their grill, Fire Magic offers the EL500i Electric Grill. “This grill offers two cooking zones and heats up to 700 degrees,” Bortz says. “With the EL500i, you control the grill temperature, set the thermostat, start the timer, all with touchscreen control. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatible, you can also control and monitor your grill with your smartphone using the RHP Connect App.”
It all amounts to a wide array of options, but Bortz believes it’s always better to show and not just tell. “Product displays are key to selling outdoor kitchen products,” she says. “Displays that help consumers visualize their outdoor kitchen often expand their purchase. Show the grill in a cabinet loaded with cooking accessories. Cooking demos also continue to be popular, drawing the public to your store.”
NAPOLEON
The Napoleon (Barrie, Ontario) outdoor product line continues to gain momentum as consumers look to expand and enhance their backyard. Outdoor kitchens were previously a feature of larger homes and backyards, but Garry Scott, vice president of marketing, points out, “We are now seeing the reality of new subdivisions with smaller homes and smaller outdoor spaces, yet consumers want the ability to have an outdoor kitchen that works within their smaller space.”
The new Napoleon Oasis compact outdoor kitchen allows consumers to enjoy the functionality of a built-in without the footprint and construction required for a more traditional build. The space-conscious OASIS 100 Modular Island Kit is built for any outdoor living space, providing storage and workspace along with the full-sized, 500 Series 32-inch gas grill head.
“This unit comes with a propane tank storage cabinet that features a rollout for easy propane changes,” Scott says. “Each cabinet is built for durability, featuring stainless steel and carbon colored, powder-coated galvanneal. Customers can fully customize this workspace by selecting their own countertop in the material and finish that matches their style. The hard work is already done and all necessary specs are provided. OASIS Modular Island Kits are easy to install.”
As a focal point of the outdoor kitchen, Scott touts Napoleon’s Built-In 700 Series 44-inch Gas Grill (with Rear Infrared Burner) as a prime example of the “aspirational” Napoleon brand that is targeted at consumers who want quality and innovation. “Built seamlessly into your ideal outdoor kitchen, the premium stainless construction ensures stylish longevity and unparalleled performance,” Scott says. “Thick, 9-mm stainless steel cooking grids are virtually maintenance-free.
“The control knobs glow blue, changing to red when burners are in use,” he says. “Grilling past dark is a joy with the integrated halogen interior hood lights to illuminate your grilling surface. Angular grease management with a perforated design, channels drippings for improved grease collection, and ease of cleaning all reduce buildup and lower the risk of grease fires.”
Gather is a conversation starter in itself. This elegant aluminum collection, paired with natural NexTeak accents, boasts 12 versatile pieces—from chaises and lounge seats to ottomans and tables. Its design allows for seamless integration and customization, letting you craft endless layouts. With over 140 fabric options and 19 finishes available, you can tailor your space to your exact taste. With 30+ years of hearth knowledge, customers of this Minnesota store can choose from some of the best American-made products.
BY MAURA KELLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLARE SCHAEFBAUER
When Larry and Kim Anderson, owners of Gull Lake Brick Fireplace in Baxter, Minnesota, were first inclined to establish a fireplace store, it was during a busy time of their lives when both were working and building their first home. As part of the homebuilding process, Larry visited a local fireplace store. Seeing how busy the store was on a typical Saturday morning, he saw an interesting opportunity.
He came home and declared, “We are going to open up a fireplace store.” Fast forward more than 30 years and today Gull Lake Brick Fireplace has made a name for itself in this northern Minnesota community.
“We didn’t know too much about the hearth industry, so we started researching the industry and joined the HPBA and went to our first hearth show in 1992 or 1993,” says Kim Anderson. Larry had been in the building trades and had been installing fireplaces and HVAC systems since high school, so he had some experience within the industry. With the newfound knowledge they needed to establish a hearth business, the Andersons opened their store in 1993.
“We started out with three employees—Larry and I and another person,” Anderson says. Larry handled installs and sales, while Kim oversaw the office and helped with sales. The Andersons were also raising three boys at the time, so working nine to five, six days a week seemed doable—especially when considering they had previously managed a
restaurant and bar that required them to work from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., seven days a week with many employees. “Working the fireplace store seemed like working half days,” she says.
During the last 30 years, the Andersons have seen the hearth industry grow and evolve significantly. From fax machines to the internet to email,
the communication component of the industry has been transformed, as has the regulatory aspects and the overall efficiency and technological advancements of the products being manufactured. “The efficiency of wood-burning products is unbelievable,” Anderson says. “They are as efficient as gas. And there’s barely any smoke, which means less pollution. Wood-burning products also are very reliable.”
In addition, Anderson points to the evolution of electric products as having come a long way in terms of the realistic experience being offered to consumers and the technological advancements being made— especially when considering today’s electric hearth products can be controlled by a smartphone. “We are seeing a big market for electric products as compared to previously,” Anderson says.
Of course, gas hearth products have been the longstanding favorite among consumers, and the Andersons have seen the introduction of a dependable electronic ignition system in gas products that allows consumers to control their fireplace from their phones. And today’s gas fireplaces offer a truly realistic burn that far surpasses the technology of three decades ago.
As such, some of Gull Lake’s bestselling products include wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, ideal components for the northern climate. “In Minnesota,
where it is cold, you want a source of heat that can heat whether you have power or not, and is not dependent on a utility company,” Anderson says.
Many of their customers are converting old, inefficient wood fireplaces to an efficient wood-burning insert or an efficient gas-burning insert. “Even in our part of the country, customers question whether electric fireplaces could be an option for them,” Anderson says.
Gull Lake customers also like American-made hearth products that are well built, dependable, and efficient, while also offering good design aesthetics. “Customers have also been looking for small gas fireplaces and stoves, which are hard to find for tiny homes, container homes, smaller rooms, or fish houses,” Anderson says. Fish houses dot the frozen lakes of Minnesota throughout the winter months and require a heat source to keep the inhabitants warm while fishing.
“Pellet stoves were a big part of our business 25 years ago until the chain stores across the street started selling the same product for less than what we were paying, so we boxed them up and put them away,” Anderson says. “We were tired of educating the customer and not getting the sale.” Today, Gull Lake Brick Fireplace showcases two brands of pellet

stoves and do successfully sell them.
CONTINUED SUCCESS
The Andersons pride themselves on having established a classic “ma and pa old school fireplace shop” that is truly a destination for consumers. “Being family owned and operated, no job is too small,” Anderson says. “We help anyone who needs help, or the ‘do it yourselfers.’ We recommend qualified installers, and we sell mostly only North Americanmade hearth products.”
Gull Lake also boasts a large retail space with ample square footage to showcase some of their con-
sumers’ favorite products. This helps their customers engage with the products and enhances the overall shopping experience. They set up and burn wood and gas fireplaces and stoves to provide customers with the firsthand experience of their products. “We price our products on the floor space to get you started,” Anderson says. They also offer cash and carry or a complete installation program with custom stonework.
“Our customers like our 30+ years of hearth knowledge,” Anderson says. “And they like when we can do a house call and go over all of their options and answering all of their questions. We offer our customers some of the best ‘Made in America’ products that are available. We’ve burned them all and we have the best.”
Indeed. Having over 150 units on display in the expansive showroom, as well as two warehouses on the premises, means that there is plenty of inventory and customers don’t have to wait on orders. They pride themselves on no-pressure sales and no commissions. The store also provides customers with the opportunity to put money down
on a product, and it will hold the stove or fireplace on sale until the customer is ready.
Being located in a tourist area of Minnesota on a four-lane highway means that Gull Lake’s best advertising is simply their location. “When they are in need of a hearth product, they will have driven by and then they know where to shop,” Anderson says. “We also invest in radio ads on local stations, too.”
INDUSTRY KNOW-HOW
Evaluating the health of the hearth industry and what that means for Gull Lake’s continued success, Anderson says the industry is strong and special.
“However, if government regulators keep interfering with our industry, we could see some changes,” Anderson says. “If they let the experts in the manufacturing and innovation departments in the industry work their efficient plans, our industry will thrive.”
Anderson adds that wood-burning products are very important to certain parts of the country, just as LP and natural
gas are very important to other parts of the country, as well as electric for the urban areas. “All of these fuels need a place at the table; let the customers decide.”
After 30 years in the hearth business, the Andersons are seeing repeat customers who are either updating or relocating, and trust Gull Lake to meet their hearth needs. Many are also recommending the company to their family and friends.
“There will always be homebuilding and remodeling. A fireplace could be considered unnecessary or optional when building, but this option could
heat your home. And it does bring more value to a home’s price,” Anderson says. “Last, but not least, we couldn’t have done it without our staff—Rod Hanson, sales. Pete Ryan and Joshua Nelson of Custom Fireplaces and Cory Nelson with ABC Sweeps and Brian Engdahl of Gull Lake Heating.”

New Life In Store
Indiana couple leaves the corporate world to fulfill their dream of working for themselves.
BY KIMBERLY RODGERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS KAUSCH
When Dan and Jen Weinstock went to a retirement sale at a long-standing Fort Wayne, Indiana, patio store to buy an end table, they had no idea they would eventually own the business. In 2019, the owners of Dar’s Porch & Patio (Dar and Chris Higlen) decided to retire after 47 years in business and began the months-long process of having a huge retirement/closing sale. It so happened that the Weinstocks had been looking around for opportunities to work together in the Fort Wayne area for the past year.
Both had corporate careers: Dan was director of sales for a national distribution company and Jen was a senior manager in human resources for a global medical device manufacturer. “We both were immediately impressed with the size of the store, the quality of products, and the atmosphere in the showroom,” Jen says.
TOP: A multitude of colorful accessories and pillows are available to complement furniture.
BOTTOM: Dan’s Porch & Patio was established five years ago, replacing a long-standing patio retailer.
Although the Weinstocks were only looking for an end table, they couldn’t help but notice the vast variety of products inside. “We wanted to walk around and take it all in. We both thought the store was amazing and how fun it would be to have a business like this.”
After their initial meeting, the four had dinner together so Dan and Jen could learn more about the business. Less than a year later, the Weinstocks realized their dream of working together—opening Dan’s Porch & Patio in February 2020. “Dar and Chris have been instrumental in helping us learn all about the retail patio furniture business,” Jen says.
Since then, area residents have been very supportive of the Weinstocks. “Everyone has been so welcoming and we still get told five years in how happy the community is that they still can purchase quality furniture from a local store.”
The biggest adjustment for the couple coming from the corporate world has been the hours of operation, since the store is open seven days a week. However, working together for the first time, Dan says, wasn’t difficult. “We have been helping each other in our areas of expertise for over 20 years.”
Although Dan’s Porch & Patio is a family-owned business, there are still several corporate-style best practices the couple carries over from their previous careers, such as budgets, inventory control, sales, forecasting, HR management, and more.
TRADITION OF HIGH QUALITY
Dan’s Porch & Patio continues the tradition of carrying the highest quality outdoor furniture and products matched with exceptional customer service, trust, and care. The store carries a variety of premium brands, and some of the most popular include: Berlin Gardens, Woodard, Kingsley Bate, Hostetler Table and Chairs, Treasure Garden, Casual Comfort, EC Woods, Telescope Casual, Ratana, Erwin & Sons, Sunset West, and LuxCraft.
While patio furniture represents the largest segment of sales, Dan’s also offers fire tables from Outdoor GreatRoom Co., Ratana, and Woodard; and play sets from Weaver. The store recently added E-bikes from Freedom Cycle Co. to its portfolio. “They are a great fit for our store as we like to pro-
mote the outdoor space with quality and fun, and Ebikes are enormously fun,” Dan says. “Being able to ride farther and faster with half the effort extends your enjoyment for the entire day.”
Located in Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne is just 18 miles west of the Ohio border and 50 miles south of Michigan. The region abounds with lakes and lake life is a huge priority for many Midwesterners. In fact, people often own second homes to take advantage of the beautiful summers before the long winter sets in. Along with furnishing their primary residences, these lake lovers also turn to Dan’s Porch & Patio to furnish their weekend homes.
The retailer offers all types of outdoor furniture, making it the perfect resource. The type of furniture lake customers purchase depends on customer taste
and location of the furniture on the property. Teak is a popular choice for lake homes along with outdoor wicker, which is especially popular in threeand four-season homes and when fall hits. Poly furniture from Berlin Gardens, LuxCraft, Casual Comfort, Hostetler Tables & Chairs, and EC Wood are also big sellers.
“Marine grade poly furniture, by nature, is definitely heavier than other products, so there is less chance of a chair ending up in a lake,” Dan says. “Poly is a recyclable and sustainable material that can exceed expectations in all weather climates and comes with an exceptional warranty.”
CHRISTMAS SHOWROOM
Dan’s Porch & Patio has a prime Fort Wayne location near the area’s largest retail center. The store’s interior space is over 11,000 square feet with more than a 5,000-square-foot outdoor area for displays. In addi-
tion, there is a 32,000-square-foot off-site warehouse. “We aim for an upbeat, elegant tone in our showroom,” Jen says. “We have a multitude of colorful accessories and pillows to complement our furniture.”
Every year, the store’s showroom truly transforms into a beautiful Christmas wonderland—a tradition now highly anticipated by the community. The season kicks off with a Christmas open
house the first weekend in November that features food, beverages, live music, and exclusive sales. The event is spotlighted on Fort Wayne’s local lifestyle talk show, which helps bring in thousands of customers to Christmas At Dan’s Porch & Patio during the holiday season.
“There is nothing around like our Christmas showroom,” Jen says. The store is filled with wreaths, ornaments, unique gifts, and a multitude of trees. Last year, 149 trees adorned the showroom in different varieties and themes, including flocked, iced, giant outdoor trees, and even upside-down trees. Samples of patio furniture are incorporated into the holiday décor, which brings new customers back the next year when the spring outdoor season hits. “It is well worth the hard work it takes to transition the whole showroom into a winter wonderland.”
Throughout the year, she adds, “We strive to provide excellent customer service and pride ourselves on being the best in the business when it comes to customer satisfaction. Our quality furniture and excellent customer service is what sets us apart from our competitors.” Every member of the sales team is a design consultant, and all work with homeowners, designers, and other businesses to offer their professional services.
Along with advertising through Fort Wayne’s local TV stations, the Weinstocks also attend a few trade shows throughout the year. “These events are a great way to showcase our brands and build a relationship in the community,” Jen says. Most of the shows are held in the first quarter of the year, which gives customers time to order products before the nice weather and patio season arrives.
The addition of geo-targeted marketing, which specifically targets certain demographics of customers, such as age and income within a defined geographic boundary, has also helped bring new customers into the showroom.
Whether it was serendipity, a desire to be their own bosses, or a combination of both, the Weinstocks are very happy they made the change from the corporate world to the retail space. Each loves reporting to one other—and not to a board of directors. Dan says, “Once you reach a point in your life where you are making solid, sound business decisions for someone else’s company, you sleep just fine at night when it’s your own.”
Boutique RETREAT
A willingness to change and learn has propelled this South Carolina specialty retailer to the front of the class.
BY SHARON SANDERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENNIS ALIAKSANDROW
Small, but mighty, Backyard Retreats (Mount Pleasant, South Carolina) has been outfitting outdoor spaces in the beautiful Lowcountry since 1991. From historical residential homes with wraparound porches, decks, and sunrooms to modern apartments and charming cafes, the experienced specialty retailer offers personal service and adds a creative touch to every project.
The longtime business was founded by Sharon Campbell three decades ago as a spa dealer with pool tables, children’s play equipment, and some patio furniture. Located across the Cooper River from downtown Charleston, it has evolved with the needs of its affluent market and clientele from every walk of life.
Campbell recently retired, selling the business to the owners of a furniture chain in the Charlotte area.
Her daughter, Darla Miller, was asked to stay as head of sales and operations to share her knowledge and continue guiding the store. “I practically grew up on the showroom floor. When I graduated from college in 1999, I decided to run the store with my mom,” Miller says. “It’s a part of my life that I really enjoy.”
Located off the heavily traveled Highway 17, Backyard Retreats is visible from the road and enjoys its share of drive-by customers. The eye-catching storefront is strategically designed to attract shoppers with its large windows and the colorful row of Adirondack chairs that has become its signature. “People often think we only sell Adirondack chairs until they walk into the showroom and see so much more.”

Drawing in customers is the goal of the storefront displays. In the past, they’ve featured at-home putting greens by Putt King, which created a lot of attention. “So many people love golf that it became a popular
niche item that generated a decent number of sales.”
Miller is looking into the feasibility of bringing back outdoor children’s play sets that sold well in the early 2000s. “There is a large outdoor space next to the store that is the perfect staging area for sets from a new Amish company. It will draw in customers with kids who might be inspired to create a whole new backyard space for their family to enjoy once they see everything that we offer.”
LUXURIOUSLY UNIQUE
The popular specialty store has a loyal following locally and from surrounding
coastal areas including Daniel Island, Kiawah, and Seabrook. Known for its unique products and luxury merchandise, it has a boutique appeal that’s different from other stores in the area.
The showroom is filled with the finest brands including Lloyd Flanders, Tuuci, Telescope Casual, Tropitone, Homecrest, Lane Venture, Woodard, Mallin, Frankford Umbrellas, Casual Comfort, and Seaside Casual.
Miller has a talent for design and makes it a priority to change the showroom floor every few months to spotlight different merchandise. “One of our sales reps told me that strategy is
one of the best ways to move merchandise—and it has worked for us.”
There are quite a few historical homes in the surrounding neighborhoods, so the store does well with furniture that complements the local architecture and design aesthetic. Miller says that outfitting Southern-style porches is big business. “There are space restraints that we have to consider as we plan because porches tend to be narrow, but long,” she explains.
Rocking chairs are a staple, so the store offers a number of different styles—some traditional and others with a modern twist. Polymer is the material

of choice from vendors including Casual Comfort and Finch (an Amish company) because it looks like real wood, but lasts for years with no maintenance. Deep seating areas on a smaller scale are also popular, as well as swing beds and

counter height chairs on double porches. “Younger customers, in general, are typically drawn to the more modern/transitional styles with clean lines.”
Over the years, design services have become a soughtafter offering for homeowners needing guidance. Miller works closely with them to create outdoor areas using a CAD space planning program that is also available directly on the store’s website. She will visit a client’s home to measure and take photos and then upload them into the program so they can review together. “It helps take the stress out of buying decisions because it shows them exactly how their space will look, with no surprises.” The store is also a favorite of interior designers because of its merchandise selection and personal service. They are offered a generous trade discount to bring in their clients.
Since COVID, the demand for upscale outdoor public areas continues to grow. The store has started reaching out more to commercial clients and even designated a salesperson to manage all the projects. “Our store owners see a lot of untapped opportunity because no other retailers in the area do it as well as we do. They value our expertise and personal service—and it’s building relationships for the future,” Miller explains. “We are furnishing pool areas in apartment complexes, shopping center common areas, as well as restaurant patios, and even rooftop bars. Texacraft, Tuuci, Frankford Umbrellas, and Telescope Casual are a few of the commercial favorites. “As far as products go, cabanas have been one of our top sellers lately.”
CUSTOMER CONNECTIONS
Miller says that the store’s desire and ability to connect with customers is what has kept it thriving for so many years. “We truly listen and understand how clients are going to be living and using their outdoor spaces.” The sales team doesn’t push product just because it is on the floor or in stock. They will take the time to pull out catalogs, research, and contact manufacturers to find the right solution for every situation.
Like most specialty retailers across the
country, Miller knows there are many challenges that lie ahead, including an unpredictable economy. “We have to be willing to change and learn something new every day,” Miller says.
Much of the store’s current clientele is baby boomers and Gen Xers, so it’s undergoing a shift in the way it attracts and reaches out to younger customers. “What
has worked in the past doesn’t necessarily resonate with the generations that are just starting to earn enough money to invest in their first high-end outdoor furniture purchases. You have to know your clientele and reach them in the way they want to be reached.”
Backyard Retreats has many opportunities and plans for the future, and Miller feels fortunate to be part of the outdoor living industry. “The industry as a whole is kind of like a fraternity. Everybody knows everybody since we’ve been in the business so long. All the store owners, reps, and manufacturers have similar challenges, and we support each other. A strong industry is good for everyone.”
Fascinating.
AFFORDABLE LUXURY
With an emphasis on functionality, comfort, design, and high-end affordability, MoDe is gaining attention in the outdoor space. BY SHARON SANDERS
UNEXPECTED. MODERN. AFFORDABLE. MODE IS BRINGING DESIGN-DRIVEN LUXURY TO THE U.S. outdoor living industry in its own way. The European-influenced company debuted its first furniture line in the United States earlier this year. Everyone is talking about its unique approach to design, color, and functionality— with an emphasis on high-end affordability. Patio & Hearth Products Report sat down with General Manager Doug DeFouw, the industry veteran who launched the venture, to take a look at what makes the forward-thinking company tick.
Who is MoDe?
DeFouw: For over a decade, Mindo, MoDe’s parent company, has been a respected name in luxury outdoor furniture in Europe known for its innovative designs. In 2019, the owner decided to expand into the United States, as the demand for modern contemporary design was on the rise. To accomplish this, a new brand was formed, MoDe Patio Living. For the company to penetrate the U.S. market, we knew we had to be different. MoDe had to bring retailers and consumers products that they hadn’t seen before. There were some very specific things that we felt were missing in the luxury market and that is what fueled us. In 2023, we unveiled our first lineup that featured 22 unique, modern collections ranging from plush deep seating to dining sets and fire pits with a luxury aesthetic that
translates seamlessly indoors to outdoors.
What is the MoDe philosophy?
DeFouw: It’s simple—to lead the industry in everything we do. Our goal is that when people see our furniture, they will know right away it is MoDe because of its unique design and function. Our team of brilliant designers includes talent from the Italy, Sweden, Spain, and the United States. Each designer brings ideas and concepts that set our brand apart. There are always new and creative ways to approach design if you just think about it differently.
Another core part of our philosophy is that we want our furniture to be affordable. The average person should be able to purchase a beautiful piece of luxurious furniture, so we have made it our mission to make this possible.
How do you describe the MoDe style?
DeFouw: Our European roots are the inspiration for our modern contemporary style. We integrate intentional shapes, clean lines, and bold silhouettes into all our pieces. Our designers thoughtfully incorporate interesting textures and shapes into the designs using materials such as fabric ropes, woven wicker, teak wood, and tabletop materials. Since we have a strong influence in Europe, we often see what new materials are popular before they reach the United States.
We source our fabric from different suppliers around the world. All our frames are aluminum with a high-quality durable powder coat. We offer an exclusive selection of finishes that includes rich metallics, classic neutrals, and our popular olive green. We also incorporate teak wood details into many of our designs to add a natural warmth. Every collection has its own unique look, yet there is a uni-
fying design thread throughout the line that makes all our pieces interchangeable.
What is the brand’s niche in the marketplace?
DeFouw: MoDe is luxury furniture that is all about functionality and comfort. Today’s lived-in outdoor spaces need to be adaptable for parties, dining, lounging, or intimate gatherings—our furniture is built with that in mind. Every piece in our line makes it easy to spend time with family and friends or unwind and relax with a book. Our furniture is strategically designed with innovative parts and pieces that make any space more livable.
For example, our Tahoe collection features a long plush sofa with an oversized teak armrest. If you need separate seating, the armrest can be moved to convert the sofa into a separate love seat and chair—and the armrest becomes the side table. Our patented Sanibel dining table brings flexibility to dining. It’s an extension table with a slat top that seats up to eight guests. If more dining space is needed, simply pull the table from one side and the slats open, extending it to fit up to 10 or more guests. It’s so easy, one person can do it in seconds.
What products are getting the biggest buzz in 2024?
DeFouw: It is really a mix. I can’t say that anything is stronger than the other. Ultimately, we want different designs to hit different markets with different needs. If I had to call out something, I would say our Sanibel Extension Table has the biggest wow factor. When we demonstrate its functionality to people, their jaws drop. It truly is an outdoor table that hasn’t been seen before. Interior designers are enamored with the
unique design of our Tahoe sofa that is not only functional, but it features removable upholstered back cushions.
What can retailers expect to see from MoDe for 2025?
DeFouw: One of the things I’m really excited about is we are taking the Sanibel Extension Table and adding a teak wood slat top with the same extension capabilities as the original metal slats. This detail will elevate it to the next level of design and blend well with many of our collections.
We also have plans to expand into the commercial market. Our retail products are already built to commercial specifications, so it’s the natural next step. We will create a separate product line exclusively for hotels, resorts, and restaurants. This line will be a mix-andmatch program that allows designers to create exactly what they are looking for with ease. Many specialty retailers already sell to the trade, so it will give them more options as well.
I can already predict that it’s going to be a huge part of our business because the uniqueness, comfort, and durability of our products are a perfect fit for the commercial market.
What emerging trends do you see in outdoor furniture?
DeFouw: Sustainability is a trend that is growing in every industry, and MoDe takes it very seriously. It’s
INTRODUCING
not just fancy words on our website—we truly believe it and live it. For us, sustainability means finding new ways to use recycled materials and reduce our overall carbon footprint. All our fill material for our pillows and cushions is made from recycled ocean waste provided by a company called Advansa. We are looking to produce all our packaging material from recycled materials by 2025. We are also working to identify environmentally friendly ways to dispose of excess materials and furniture at the end of their life span.
Honestly for me, this is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. Being in the manufacturing industry for many years, I’ve seen firsthand the tremendous amount of waste that exists. I’m committed to helping our company find a more sustainable way to manufacture.
In your opinion, what does the future hold for the outdoor furniture industry?
DeFouw: That’s a tough one. I think there are a lot of variables in play right now. The good news is the outdoor furniture space is going to continue to grow. The uncertainty of interest rates will make more homeowners think about staying in their homes and making improvements. One perfect place is to expand the living space to the outdoors.
Another challenge we face today is that there is a strong leisure travel demand right now that is eating into outdoor furniture sales. I believe that people have become exhausted from COVID lockdowns and are
overworked right now, so they are traveling to escape.
We have also been seeing a consistent increase in online purchasing, but the question is, will that continue to grow? There is some trend information that says the younger generation is losing interest in buying large items online but would rather go to a retail store to touch and see products before they make a purchase. Time will show if this is a shift in the way people purchase.
Then, there is the rising concern over more tariffs. In the end, there will always be factors beyond our control, so as an industry we just need to be aware of the issues and be willing to adapt to changes.
What does the future hold for MoDe?
DeFouw: Every day is a new opportunity—it’s exciting. We know we have the right products and are heading in the right direction, so it’s about building on that. Every day becomes the next big thing. Our entire organization knows what our plans are and is excited about being a part of our future. The whole team is excited and knows that their efforts have and will continue to make MoDe a success. When I talk to dealers and they are excited, it validates what we are doing.
I think our products are special and I want others to feel the same way. I encourage everyone to stop by our brand-new 10,000-square-foot showroom on the sixth floor of AmericasMart in Atlanta. It’s big, beautiful, and ready for visitors.

AMD Direct has effectively broadened its outdoor living line beyond grills and outdoor kitchens.
BY DANA ROBINSON
PEOPLE WOULD ARGUABLY SPEND MORE TIME IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS IF IT WERE MORE COMFORTABLE.
Finding ways to keep warm on the back patio on chilly nights and comfortably grill up delicious foods for family and friends are just some of the challenges that outdoor enthusiasts have to contend with along with biting bugs and sunburns. AMD Direct can’t help with the bugs or the burns, but the company has been dedicated to creating top-of-the-line outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and heaters to make the outdoors feel just as convenient, cozy, and comfortable as the indoors.
The family-owned business is located in Huntington Beach, California, and has been in operation for 20 years. With a family of brands that includes Summerset Grills, American Made Grills, TrueFlame, Heatstrip, Firegear, and Sunfire Grills, AMD Direct has grown to become a leader in the outdoor industry.
“We check off a lot of boxes for outdoor living needs,” says Dennis Smith, CEO and president. “We offer products in the arenas of outdoor kitchen, outdoor fire, outdoor fireplaces, and outdoor heat. Plus, we pride ourselves in using only the best materials … and our core focus is to provide exceptional customer service backed by the best warranty in the industry.”
PRODUCT INTRODUCTIONS
Executives have had their hands full this past year managing product releases under AMD’s vast collection of brands. “We recently introduced our new lineup of outdoor-rated and certified
refrig eration products under the AMD Direct brand,” Smith says.
The updated Summerset Gas GridPro also reached the market this year featuring a lighted knob/bezel indicating an on/off burner state. The Summerset Quest grill will be delivered to showrooms this September and is “the most loaded Summerset grill,” Smith says. The Summerset Hybrid Oven will also be delivered to showrooms in September and can cook up delicious, flavorful dishes using either wood or gas.
To help keep customers warm on those cool, breezy summer nights, the company recently introduced the Firegear 24” and 30” Lume in Round and Square Smoke-Less Fire Pit inserts, which are designed for SRW Block, brick, or other non-combustible materials. “In addition to the Lume Surround wood-burning fire feature, our GFRC Fire Bowl with a smokeless insert creates a stunning centerpiece for outdoor living,” Smith says. “We have now expanded the offering to four bowl color choices.”
The Kalea Bay and Pro Series Burner Systems are also under the Firegear brand and are doing very well. “We are recognized for having the broadest line of fire pit burner systems in the marketplace in both stainless steel and our Pro Series ‘Injector’ burner systems in round, square, linear, and rectangular sizes, as well as custom,” he says.
Rounding out AMD’s new outdoor living
offering is the TrueFlame TFE grill collection, which includes the AMD Gold Standard Warranty and the Heatstrip line of outdoor electric heaters. Heatstrip is widely known throughout Australia and New Zealand as the leader in outdoor heaters, Smith notes. And AMD Direct has an exclusive partnership to market the complete product line in North America.
But perhaps AMD’s most innovative, industryadvancing product is the new Crossray grill. “It’s our first electric all-infrared grill,” Smith says.
“This is big news for our dealers. The unit’s infrared technology makes it ideal for apartment/condo living, and it sells at a very affordable price.”
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
AMD will be refreshing several of its brands in the fall of 2024 as “we continue to listen to our distributor/dealer base,” Smith says.
“We value having the best distributors in the business that maintain strong inventory levels and can deliver to their markets within a day’s notice.”
When creating new products for each line, AMD takes into account the newest trends that have been hitting the outdoor living market. And the latest customer “wants” essentially boil down to one word: “More!” Larger sizes, more storage, and more connectivity are just some of the features that are enticing customers to buy great brands and create their
Dedication to Innovation
HPC Fire Inspired leads the way in safety, certification, and cutting-edge technology.
BY MAURA KELLER
EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, A COMPANY COMES ALONG THAT EXEMPLIFIES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE TRULY
INNOVATIVE, while meeting the interests of today’s discerning consumers. You know the ones: They strive to design awe-inspiring products that enhance the consumer experience, while keeping safety top of mind. HPC Fire Inspired (Miamisburg, Ohio) is one such company, leading the charge in being the foremost fire feature manufacturer for nearly five decades.
HPC Fire Inspired, originally known as Hearth Products Controls, was founded in 1975 to address a need in the market for indoor valves, controls, and components. “Over the decades, the company has significantly evolved, transitioning in the early 2000s to focus on outdoor fire features for both residential and commercial applications,” says Sean Steimle, CEO.
Today, HPC specializes in the design, assembly, and distribution of fire features and control systems for indoor and outdoor use. “We cater to a broad range of applications, priding ourselves on our innovative approach to fire features and outdoor dining products,” Steimle says. “We have patented numerous products, particularly in the realm of outdoor gas fire
pits, which have garnered national recognition.”
Industry professionals recognize the impact HPC has made, thanks to innovations such as the patented Penta and Torpedo Penta burners, which offer unique flame patterns, exceptional performance, and exclusive fire and water designs. HPC has also developed advanced products like the SMART Arc and the New Drum Smoker. The company’s latest innovation, the Universal Gas Orifice (UGO), further exemplifies its commitment to advancing fire feature technology.
“Through these innovations, we continue to set industry standards, ensuring HPC Fire Inspired remains a leader in the field of fire features and control systems,” Steimle says.
SAFETY AND CERTIFICATION
With such a long-standing history, spanning nearly 50 years, the HPC team has its fingers on the proverbial pulse of the hearth industry. HPC understands the trends and innovations that consumers respond to.
As Steimle notes, the fire feature (outdoor living) industry has evolved significantly, with a heightened emphasis on certifications enforced by local municipalities. Here’s why: As the outdoor living trend emerged dramatically during the pandemic, more and more manufacturers introduced fire features for outdoor living, many of which did not meet safety standards and certifications. However, throughout this transforma-
tion, HPC has consistently led the industry, particularly through its comprehensive certification processes via CSA (Canadian Standards Association).
In fact, HPC boasts over 400 standard units and more than 7,000 engineered-to-order custom fire features that are CSA certified.
According to Steimle, this certification encompasses the entire appliance, ensuring that customers can trust in the safety of HPC products. HPC also achieved ISO certification in 2024.
“As an industry leader, we have introduced numerous firsts, reflecting our company’s dedication to innovation and safety,” Steimle says. “We were the first to offer CSA-certified electronic ignition systems and have integrated advanced technologies. These innovations underscore HPC’s role in setting industry benchmarks.”
Moreover, HPC has embraced the digital age with the launch of a SMART App that includes 3D installation and troubleshooting programs. The company has also introduced an augmented reality app, allowing clients to visualize HPC products in their outdoor spaces before making a purchase. “With a strong focus on safety and certification, coupled with cutting-edge technology, HPC Fire Inspired continues to lead the fire feature industry, providing customers with unparalleled products and peace of mind,” Steimle says.
PRODUCTS TO NOTE
Over the years, HPC has introduced some of the industry’s most groundbreaking hearth and fire feature products. Today, HPC offers an extensive line of controls, such as match-lit, battery-operated, electronic ignition, home automation, and Smart App-Bluetooth operations, all designed to

With its vertical integration model, all made in the USA, and quick turnaround times, Twitchell is enjoying unparalleled success. BY LARRY THOMAS
WHILE THE HOME FURNISHINGS BUSINESS HAS BEEN CHALLENGING
OVER THE PAST YEAR, Twitchell, a key supplier of outdoor furniture fabric, has seen an increase in sales and production of its high-end fabric lines. In fact, the Dothan, Alabama-based company appears to be moving in the opposite direction of many of its home furnishings brethren. Sales are on the upswing, its factory is humming, and the company just added 70,000 square feet of warehouse space at its 33-acre campus.
“We saw a slow start to the year … but right now, it’s all we can do to keep up with demand,” says Gena Webb, Twitchell’s vice president of R&D and product. “It’s a fantastic problem to have. We’re seeing strong demand across the board.”
She said outdoor furniture—in both the residential and hospitality sectors—appears to be bucking the downward trend plaguing the rest of the home furnishings space. “We feel very fortunate,” Webb says. “Outdoor furniture is a huge business for us.”
The driving force of that business is Textilene, the company’s trademarked, PVC-coated polyester fabric. Marketed as “the original all-weather fabric,” the product is flame and mildew resistant, and the core yarn goes through a unique heating process that makes it less susceptible to shrinking, she explains.
Textilene also contains a proprietary plasticizer, which is a softening agent for the PVC that slows fabric degradation. Many PVC compounds include a plasticizer, but Webb says Twitchell’s formula is safe for children and doesn’t have to be included on California’s Proposition 65 list of potentially harmful chemicals.
And since Twitchell’s factory produces the yarn, compounds the PVC, and mixes the colors to exacting specifications, it is the
chairs because it is flame- and mildew-resistant.
only outdoor fabric resource that is 100% vertical. And it’s all made in the USA. “In the South, a lot of the traditional textile mills have gone away, but we have stayed strong,” Webb says. “We feel very fortunate to be manufacturing in the United States, and we feel very strongly about keeping it that way.”
That vertical capability has allowed the company to substantially increase its in-stock fabric selection in recent years, which has helped keep sales strong and customers happy due to the quick shipping schedules.
QUICK CUSTOM ORDERS
According to Webb, vertical integration also has helped boost the company’s custom fabric business because it provides quicker turnaround time than fabric resources that must outsource certain aspects of the fabric development. “Our custom fabric business really has increased, and once we demonstrate that we can fulfill (a custom order in a short time frame) the customer may give us more business and be more loyal to us in the future,” she says. continued on page 77
“Broadening our stock has really been beneficial,” she says. “That allows us to fill smaller orders, which is a big benefit to our customers.”
BeautifullyBlended
Outdoor Interiors innovates mixed-material outdoor furniture that expertly balances design and value.
BY CHERISE FORNO
FROM ITS INCEPTION TWO DECADES AGO, OUTDOOR INTERIORS (BARRINGTON, ILLINOIS)
has built a robust collection of outdoor furniture using a blend of high-quality materials to create stylish, comfortable pieces. “Through the years, we’ve maintained ourselves as that mixedmaterial leader in outdoor patio furniture,” says Tim Cimaglio, president and founder. “We try to bring it all together and have it designed with a purposeful, upgraded look at a great price point, so that’s really what we’ve done the last 20 years. Creating that comfort with quality materials along with that price point is so critical today.”
Outdoor Interiors has strong relationships with dealers and retailers, and is very selective with who it chooses to have represent its brand. A key part of this business relationship includes providing retailers with products that deliver the most value, style, and comfort possible at an appealing price level.
Cimaglio notes that Outdoor Interiors does a great job striking this balance when he sees customers gravitate toward their offerings. “We find we have a lot of customers walk into our showrooms and say, ‘This is exactly what I’m looking for at a price point that I needed.’ There’s so many high-end options, and they’re doing well with their thing, but we’ve been able to work ourselves into the mid-tier marketplace and really grow. We brought in a lot of customers to that price point.”
A main reason Outdoor Interiors catches customers’ attention is the unique, balanced design elements it implements into its furniture. “We’re so much more than just being a wicker sofa provider, or a resin chair provider, or a powder-coated aluminum furniture provider,” Cimaglio says. “We really blend our natural hardwoods with our decorative wicker and rope, and all those woven products.
We’ve brought in so much more than just teak or eucalyptus. There’s so much blending of natural materials with everything from Spanish marble to woven wicker to rope that’s really made us stand out.”
The blending of teak and black rope as part of the Resort Collection continues to grow in popularity. “It’s really done well for us, and we’re bringing in a lot of line extensions,” Cimaglio says. “We kind of take the grain down, and it’s just beautiful with a lot of the darker colors along with teak, so most of our success has been blending teak with our black rope and powder-coated aluminum frames with fabrics for a really compelling look and a strong price point.”
The Teak and Black Rope Loveseat with Sunbrella Cushions is ideal for small to medium patios. It features plush cushions and pillows with Sunbrella fabric for maximum comfort and durability. It is made with FSC-certified teak hardwood, nautical-grade rope, a powder-coated aluminum frame, and stainless-steel hardware. It also pairs well with other elements.
“Our rope collections have been very popular,” Cimaglio says. “We’re doing another collection in black composite stone and blending that with our wheat wash hardwoods where it’s got that lighter look.”
The Eucalyptus and Ivory dining table is another popular piece that showcases beauty achieved by blending the right materials. The Eucalyptus Blue Rope and Antique Wash Rocking Chair is eye-catching and is also available in a brown stain and wheat rope.
The Teak and Cable Wicker Parlor Chairs with Sunbrella Cushions mix traditional and contemporary styles for a harmonious look. The Teak and Cable Wicker Storage Accent Table is a great accompaniment.
HEARTFELT COLLECTIONS
Outdoor Interiors’ new line of outdoor pillows honors the memory of Kimberly Ann Cimaglio, while representing the heart of the company and giving back to the communities it serves.
“We came out with a brand-new product line of decorative outdoor pillows,” Cimaglio says. “We did this through the loss of my sister, who passed away a few years ago from leukemia. We’ve called the line the Kimberly Ann Designs, and 20% of our profits go to the Northwestern Foundation for Leukemia Research. We actually just wrote them a $25,000 check for our first six months of sales, and we presented it to their team at their annual cancer walk in Chicago. It was an exciting day for us, and it just was amazing to be able to provide that kind of a donation.”
Available in three sizes, and 10 colors and patterns, Kimberly Ann Designs pillows are made from 100% solution-dyed polyester. “We’ve been able to grow that product line with our customers, and it’s going to continue to get stronger every year,” Cimaglio says. “It’s colorful, the price is right; it’s really an exciting part of our business right now.”
Kimberly Ann Designs is one example of
the care Outdoor Interiors puts into its collections. “Our products stand out mostly because of the style, the coloring, and that natural warmth of the materials,” Cimaglio says. “We really do a good job of bringing that warmth with either a sofa, lounger, or a dining set.”
The Sahara Wicker Sofa and Armchair can be paired with the Sahara Outdoor Firepit to create a comfortable outdoor oasis. The pieces are made with HDPE all-weather wicker, sustainable eucalyptus, and quick-dry cushions.
Outdoor Interiors has also focused on its powder-coated aluminum products this year. The Linen White Rope Daybed is a lush piece that provides comfort as well as a focal point. Constructed with powder-coated aluminum and nautical grade white rope, it can withstand the elements while retaining its appeal. The Black Aviary Daybed offers a beautiful contrast between the black powder-coated aluminum frame and the Sunbrella throw pillows.
“We’ve done a lot with whites and slate grays in our decorative metal,” Cimaglio says. “It’s a beautiful program with sofas, loungers, and accent tables, and it’s really opened some new doors for
us. We have tremendous price points on these metal goods, and we’re very excited about what’s happening in that product line right now.”
Cimaglio notes that furniture needs to have a look that grabs people’s attention, but it also needs to be comfortable.
“When you’ve nailed those two parts, and then put a great price point on it, you can have a really compelling program.”
FRESH DESIGNS
Outdoor Interiors keeps its product line
most fun part of our business over the last few years is just seeing the change in products and continuing to evolve our product lines.”
Timing is another important element because Cimaglio cautioned against being too early on trends. The company stays current with what is doing well in Europe and North America, but they also focus on taking a trend and making it their own.
fresh by consistently overhauling its designs and adding product extensions. “The biggest part of our product development is finding products that excite the consumer,” Cimaglio says. This ties in with the company’s goal to keep pace with trends and turn over more than two-thirds of its product offerings in the next 18 months. “It’s just amazing how many new products we’re putting out every year and they’re compelling products that are fun and exciting,” he says. “That’s been the
Over the years, Outdoor Interiors focused on establishing manufacturing and domestic shipping capabilities that helped them avoid tariffs and long delays. “It’s been an exciting transition moving from China and then into Vietnam and being so far ahead of what so many others have gone through the last few years,” he says.
Outdoor Interiors has a lot of inventory stocked at domestic facilities. Retailers also don’t have to stock full containers of products. “That’s the great part about being a domestic supplier,” Cimaglio says. “We can ship within 48 hours on any given order and that makes a lot of our new customers extremely happy. It’s what keeps many of our existing customers coming back to us.”

In this conversation, an expert designer shares her outdoor design perspective and process at a North Carolina waterfront home project. BY LAURIE
NESTLED OVERLOOKING LUSH NATURAL MARSH GRASSES AND TIDAL OYSTER BEDS, A CONTEMPORARY WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, home’s outdoor spaces deliver spectacular views and a welcoming vibe, thanks to the design expertise of a Raleigh designer. At the request of a repeat client, Sally Will-iams, principal designer and owner of Colorful Concepts Interior Design, took on the multilevel exterior project for her client’s second home. The homeowner’s desire for visitor-friendly functionality and exterior durability were captured in
RUDD
Williams’ detailed design plan and selection of outdoor furnishings.
“We had collaborated with this client on their Cary, N.C., home when their family was growing,” Williams says. “Now that they are empty nesters, we were eager to address the casual lifestyle of this locale and this beautiful Oyster Point home to accommodate outdoor expectations and experiences for their guests.”
With the creation of a cohesive color palette based on the natural waterfront location and a selection of leisure elements in keeping with the relaxed vibe, Williams and her team were able to deliver to the client’s satisfaction a multilevel outdoor living design. In this conversation, Williams shares her outdoor design perspective and process from a fresh coastal viewpoint.
What was the client’s desire for this project?
Primarily, the client envisioned the outdoor spaces from the perspective of accommodating, hosting, and entertaining family members and guests. When pulling together each outdoor “room” and selecting individual design elements, we never lost sight of this specific request.
What was the scope of the project’s multilevel outdoor living areas?
This project encompassed the entire rear of the home, including a full-length second story balcony that connected guests and their guest rooms to the outdoors. A large deck wrapping around the lower levels of the home offered covered and open areas that were ultimately perfect for cooking, conversation, and lounging.
What elements were used within your outdoor design plan?
With the multiple levels, our design team was able to create a variety of outdoor living spaces. As I mentioned, the second-story guest balconies were designed to give visitors a private space to enjoy the tremendous sunset views or an
early morning coffee directly off their bedroom. For these areas, we selected durable, natural wood seating as well as tables. Accessories included outdoor rugs to ground and define individual spaces. The orientation of the home was perfect for capturing the North Carolina sunsets; therefore, all outdoor areas on both levels were planned for use from early morning into the evening. The need for outdoor illumination was addressed with decorative string lighting installed along the toplevel balcony railings and wall sconces, and a trio of basket-like pendant lights lit up areas on the lower porch area.
Also, on the lower level, elements for cooking, conversation, lounging, and even a handy bar cabinet met the client’s request for creating welcome guest experiences. We added a vintage porch swing as a statementmaking feature that proved to be very popular with guests as well as the homeowners.
Other sitting areas were planned on the lower level, including chaise lounges for sunning and deep seating for conversation. The homeowner has a passion for container gardening, so we included plenty of modern planters for her to show off her skill and add color to the neutral surroundings.
What inspired your color and style choices? With a focus on the spectacular views of the adjacent
wildlife-filled waterway and brilliant coastal sunsets, our inspiration came from our surroundings for colors and furnishing styles. With the collection of outdoor living spaces, we found that we were able to accomplish a restful and cohesive flow, including a blurring of the line not only between indoor and outdoor areas but between each exterior living space.
What would you say is the highlight of the project?
Our client was especially happy with the results and the functionality of the design plan. It not only accommodated their love of the outdoors and nature, but also their love of gathering with family and friends. The cohesive outdoor living plan allowed everyone to feel at home in this coastal retreat.

The Pinnacle of Holographic, Zero-Emission Electric Fireplaces
Electric Era
THE
ERA OF ELECTRIC IS HERE AS CONSUMERS SHIFT THEIR MINDSET TO THE BENEFITS OF ELECTRICITY AS A POWER SOURCE for products they use every day. From transportation options including electric vehicles, bicycles, mopeds, scooters, and skateboards to products for the home such as fireplaces, cooking appliances, and heating, consumers are flocking to electric. “We are seeing this shift in many industries. In the outdoor heating arena, consumers are realizing the many benefits of electric infrared heat,” says Mike Conway, regional sales manager at Infratech.
Indeed, homeowners across North America are increasingly adding heaters to their outdoor rooms to extend the use and enjoyment of these exterior spaces. In some regions, outdoor heaters can add more than three months or provide year-round use in areas with a temperate climate. In large part, strong growth in the category can be attributed to technological advances and innovations in electric infrared heat—no doubt driven by Infratech, a pioneer and leading brand in providing premium heating solutions for a variety

of residential and commercial applications for over 50 years.
Infrared heat gives consumers numerous advantages. High on the list is better energy efficiency than traditional gas heaters. In fact, Infratech heaters convert over 90% of energy directly into radiant heat, providing a sustainable heat source. Moreover, unlike traditional propane heaters, Infratech heaters operate with zero greenhouse gases or odors, have no refillable tanks, and they are less expensive to operate, simple to use, and virtually maintenance free.
Perhaps one of the most important benefits is the heater’s greater effectiveness in windy environments. Infrared heat does not blow away in windy conditions compared to gas heaters— which can lose up to 5o% of heating output during a gust of wind. Infratech heaters are UL approved for indoor and outdoor use versus gas units, which must be outside in a well-ventilated area. All models offer unparalleled dependability and durability, and are made with either 304 or 316 stainless steel, depending on the model.
In addition, with minimal clearance requirements, Infratech heaters are incredibly versatile in a variety of environments. Beautiful and sleek in design, Infratech heaters are unobtrusive, fit seamlessly in any outdoor room, emit an ambient
glow, and provide the warmth of indoor comfort to outdoor living. “When you add all these benefits up, electric infrared heat is the clear choice,” Conway says.
Certainly, the eco-friendly nature of infrared heat is also attractive to the market. Infratech’s lunch and learn program provides education to designers, engineers, architects, and other construction specifiers on not only the sustainability of electric heating over gas, but the added sustainability electric brings to American manufacturing. “This is a major focus for these professionals, and Infratech offers 93% heating efficiency with no greenhouse gas emissions,” Conway says.
RANGE OF OPTIONS
Infratech offers a wide range of heaters along with installation options and control capabilities to meet the specific needs of any project. This includes Motif Collection, C-Series, CD-Series, W-Series, WD-Series, and Comfort Garage Heaters. The majority of heaters and frames come in eight standard color options to complement any design style.
“We always recommend the right heater for an installation, which is why we offer so many sizes, wattages, and series of heaters,” Conway

2024 Mia Nault Unsung Hero Award Goes to Terry DeMeuse
The International Casual Furnishings Association (ICFA) named Terry DeMeuse of Lloyd Flanders as the 2024 recipient of the Mia Nault Unsung Hero Award. DeMeuse has been with Lloyd Flanders since 2018, starting in a warehouse role and progressing to customer service.
In nominating DeMeuse for this award, sales rep Kathleen Ferry of K. Ferry Sales, says, “Terry goes above and beyond for her customers, company and sales reps. She is the most reliable and customerdriven associate I have ever worked with. She is professional, kind, positive, and truly believes in giving 100% to every single customer, no matter if they are purchasing a throw pillow or $50,000 worth of product.”
She adds, “Terry isn’t shy about how proud she is to work for Lloyd Flanders. She takes her role in customer service seriously and she has developed wonderful relationships with her colleagues, customers, and sales reps. She is invaluable.”
DeMeuse grew up in Fort Ashby, West Virginia. At age 18, she joined the Navy and after receiving her basic training in Orlando in 1981, she received storekeeper training in a record 15 days in Meridian, Mississippi. She was then stationed in Reykjavik, Iceland, where she met her husband, Chris, and they were soon married. They moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where they completed their service with the Navy and raised two children. After 30 years in Florida, Chris and Terry left for a slightly different climate in northern Wisconsin, where they currently reside.
This award was created to call attention to outstanding customer service representatives at manufacturing companies throughout the casual furnishings industry. Candidates are selected based on their ability to provide exceptional customer service, as well as outstanding communication skills, innovative problemsolving, professionalism, and ability to inspire others as brand ambassadors. In 2021, the award was renamed in honor of the inaugural 2020 recipient, the late Mia Nault of Ebel Inc.
Treasure Garden Recognizes JEN Sales as Independent Sales Representative of the Year
Treasure Garden, a leading designer and manufacturer of luxury shade products and outdoor accessories, named JEN Sales, led by Eric and Jonah Nieman, as its independent 2024 Sales Representative of the Year.
The award was presented to the Canadian representatives during Treasure Garden’s annual awards dinner at Casual Market in Atlanta on July 14. The award recognizes excellence in sales, territory development, and new customer category growth.
Eric Nieman joined Treasure Garden in 2007, working alongside his sister, Ingrid, until her retirement in 2018. Together, they consistently exemplified unwavering dedication to the brand. The Canadian market presents unique challenges, and the Niemans have consistently risen to the occasion. Notably, Eric brought his son, Jonah, into the business in 2018, further strengthening their commitment to tireless service for their dealers.
“They collaborate with the factory to develop programs and products specifically for their territory,” says Candy Chase, national sales manager at Treasure Garden. “They constantly push the company to excel in all aspects of the business, not just for themselves but for the entire sales representative team.”
The Nieman team’s boundless enthusiasm for their territory and business opportunities is evident in their daily interactions. Their pursuit of excellence is relentless, holding themselves to the highest standards. Their unwavering dedication to Treasure Garden brands sets them apart.
“We are incredibly honored to have the Nieman team representing Treasure Garden,” Chase says. “We look
forward to a continued and successful partnership for many years to come. We’re proud to recognize Eric and Jonah as our 2024 Sales Representatives of the Year.”
Glaister Lands ASID ANDYZ Award for Best Outdoor Space
Interior designer Wendy Glaister won an ASID ANDYZ Award for 2024 Best Outdoor Space. “To say that we are blessed to do what we do is an understatement,” says Glaister, president and founder of luxury design firm Wendy Glaister Interiors. “So many opportunities exist to make a special place for our clients and their families. I am so grateful for the faith that our clients place in our vision. We are extremely grateful that our projects are receiving national attention.”
The American Society of Interior Design (ASID) ANDYZ Awards is an annual celebration of the year’s best in interior design. Interior designers, architects, design students, and showroom design professionals enter hundreds of projects in 13 categories. Each project is then judged by a panel of industry professionals before selecting a winning project from each category.
The Outdoor Oasis project, which landed the award for Best Outdoor Space, features a spectacular design with a four-seasons concept and multiple areas for outdoor entertaining.
The exquisite design leaned heavily on Valley Fire Place, a local retailer, on its expertise in creating the ultimate outdoor chef’s kitchen package. It has a kitchen design that features Blaze outdoor appliances and grills, plumbing and fixtures by Brizo, and Nature Kast Custom Outdoor Cabinets in a warm neutral to coordinate with massive double kitchen islands. The 12-foot kitchen islands feature stunning waterfall edge details in Taj Mahal Quartzite honed finish by Stone Company MSI. Completing the warm neutral color story included expanding the outdoor patio with limestone 24” x 48” pavers, also by MSI.
“The secret to growing a successful design business and award-winning projects is only possible with the passionate belief in fostering relationships with skilled craftspeople and supporting local businesses,” Glaister says.

ideal outdoor living space.
Smith notes that customers have been seeking out fire feature designs that are longer and larger than in years past, while outdoor kitchens that feature more appliances per island (combinations of grills with ovens, griddle grills, and power burners) plus more outdoor refrigeration and storage, are hitting the mark. In the outdoor heating market, more products that are designer- and decorative-friendly and feature smart controls are in high demand.
In addition to new product launches and management, the AMD Direct team is in the midst of an operational shift that is designed to better prepare the corporation for the future. “We have an amazing staff of dedicated people,” Smith says. “In January of this year, we implemented several team member role changes that are designed to give several of our leadership teams a twoyear rotation working in other areas of the company.”
PRODUCT INNOVATION

HPC FIRE continued from page 46
“As consumer preferences shift toward incorporating more technology into their outdoor living spaces, we’ve responded by enhancing our product offerings to meet these demands,” Steimle says. “There is a growing interest in smart apps and home automation, as well as a desire for unique fireplace designs. Our company caters to these trends by providing a variety of custom solutions in addition to their standard stock items.”
One of HPC’s notable innovations is the launch of the first fire pit custom configurator. This web-based software allows customers to design fire pit configurations online, selecting from a range of options. This tool allows customers to create personalized fire features that perfectly fit their needs and aesthetic preferences. As Steimle explains, with a commitment to blending technology and customization, HPC continues to lead the industry, providing customers with innovative solutions.
HPC recognizes that the outdoor living industry is moving away from brass burners due to issues with corrosion, water damage, and whistling noises. In response, HPC offers stainless steel Penta and Torpedo burners, which feature water mitigation technologies. These burners also have significantly quieter air mixing and have one of the industry’s longest warranties.
CONTINUOUS PROGRESS
Recently, HPC acquired Galaxy Outdoor, which allows the company to further enhance its national footprint.
Smith recently announced his retirement, which is set to begin in March 2029, and he felt that it was very important that the future leadership of the company stretch themselves by learning and working in different departments. “Each of our leaders has been tasked with mentoring the future leaders as
“This milestone enables HPC Fire Inspired to enhance customer experiences with faster delivery services across the United States,” Steimle says. “Expanding to the West Coast allows HPC to better serve its customers nationwide and solidify its industry leadership.”
The acquisition also creates synergy between HPC’s outdoor dining segment and Galaxy Outdoor’s expertise in manufacturing custom and standard kitchen islands. This addition complements HPC’s range of pizza ovens and smokers, allowing the company to offer a broad selection of outdoor kitchen solutions.
While the company has achieved accolades aplenty, the company has also earned a solid reputation and has fostered a strong trust among customers. Steimle attributes the company’s success to several reasons. “We dedicate thousands of hours to testing new products and achieving high-level certifications, ensuring that all fire appliances meet rigorous safety standards,” he says.
In addition, the company embraces innovation, bringing cutting-edge fire features to backyards. HPC’s revolutionary products include fire-on-water displays and app-controlled flame strength, enhancing the fire experience.
Also, HPC offers customers a mobile learning center, in-person courses at its R&D center, and an online learning program known as HPC University. These educational efforts ensure that customers are well informed and confident in using HPC products.
they move throughout the company in their new roles,” Smith says. “We are blessed to have an amazing, talented team. Our mission is to be better today than yesterday for our customers.”
HPC University is also a great opportunity for dealers. “We believe that having a full understanding of our products is of great importance. We want you to be equipped to sell and service the finest fire features on the market and be able to answer your customers’ questions with confidence,” Steimle says. “This improves efficiency both within your company as well as collaborating as partners to HPC.”
HPC also prides itself on exceptional customer service and offers a team of experts to provide quick support via phone or email, ensuring customers receive the help they need.
Looking ahead, Steimle notes the continued importance of advanced technology and producing high-quality products that function reliably without hassle. Consumers also seek companies that provide excellent warranty and service programs. “HPC meets these demands with quality systems and products that ensure consistent ignition and durability,” he says. “Additionally, we offer advanced technology, including the new Universal Gas Orifice, which simplifies installation and meets the technological needs of customers.”
What excites Steimle the most about the future is the creativity, passion, and dedication of the company’s employees. “Our commitment to exceeding customer expectations in delivery, support, and technological advancements is truly inspiring,” Steimle says. “This drive ensures that HPC will continue to lead the industry and innovate for years to come.”
A classic example of such order fulfilment occurred in June, when a resort asked Twitchell if the company could make a pink fabric for its outdoor sofa cushions. And it wasn’t a request for run-of-the-mill pink, but a shade of pink similar to that seen in the “Barbie” movie. Needless to say, it was the first such request for that shade of pink, but Webb says a production team huddled with designer Nancy Egge to develop the precise shade the resort wanted. It took four attempts, but the group finally came up with a sample that satisfied the customer, and the fabric was quickly put into production. “If we didn’t compound our own PVC and mix our own colors (on-site), we couldn’t have done that,” Webb says. “But it still took a lot of work and required a lot of staff.”
Egge adds, “There was a major time crunch to get this color. If we had needed to go outside of Twitchell to get the color match, it would have taken four to six weeks. We turned it around in a week and a half.”
Accomplishments like that are what sets Twitchell apart from the competition, Webb notes, adding that everyone involved in the pink project had the same goal of doing whatever it took to make the customer happy. “That’s what really makes us unique,” Egge adds. “It took a lot of teamwork and a lot of collaboration, but we did it. I was very proud to get that order.”
FORWARD THINKING
Although she’s not expecting to get additional requests for pink in the near future, Egge notes that greens and

neutrals are in high demand this season, while grays appear to be on the way out. From the green family, colors such as emerald and mint are especially popular, while neutrals tend to be tan—although some deep brown pigments are still in demand.
“We’re seeing a lot of solids and texture,” Egge says of current fabric trends. “If you do have a pattern, it’s very subtle. People want clean lines and clean colors.”
Egge and Webb also are hoping a fabric that is currently popular in the company’s flooring division will take hold in the casual furniture space. Called the Surface Collection, it features a proprietary version of Textilene yarn that is larger than a typical sling or cushion yarn and has much more depth. “It just screams durability,” Egge says. “And it’s so easy to maintain. If it gets dirty, just hose it off.”
Webb says the development of that proprietary yarn is an example of the company’s forward-thinking attitude. “One of the things that has made us successful over the years is that we don’t concentrate on what everybody else is doing,” she says. “Of course we look at the competition, but we really put our focus on innovation … and how we can be the best supplier.”
Webb says researchers currently are working on an updated version of Textilene. It will show up soon in several new products that are being kept under wraps, and she adds that the company is planning to enter the outdoor rug category—a niche now dominated by imported cotton products. “Cotton won’t last, but rugs

says. For example, the CD-Series offers powerful dualelement heat for larger-scale applications in locations with high visibility. The sleek, contemporary design looks very minimalistic and can be dressed up with a decorative motif cover.
The single-element W-Series (1,500-4,000 watt capabilities) and dual-element WD-Series (3,000-6,000 watt capabilities) are both preferred for flush mount (recessed) applications. To maximize space and maintain a streamlined look, many designers choose flushmount heaters.
The C/CD and W/WD are available in Infratech’s Marine UpGrade, which provides high-grade anti-corrosive 316 stainless steel construction, offering protection in coastal, alpine, windy, humid, and other demanding weather conditions. The SL-Series, slimline single-element heaters work great for mounting heights up to 10 feet and provide a different aesthetic option that is stylish and streamlined.
Infratech’s commitment to offering the most advanced heaters in the market extends to its custom controls collection designed to maximize the enjoyment and usability of the company’s heat systems. “We are the only manufacturer that offers such a broad line of integration controls,” Conway says.
Smart homes are on the rise and more homeowners are demanding devices that enable remote monitoring and management of their home systems, such as lighting and heating. “Only Infratech offers multiple solutions to integrate into any smart control system in the
residential market,” he adds.
Infratech sells its products through specialty stocking distributor partners in North America and launched its Elite Retailer Program in 2023 with over 900 dealer representatives who have gone through the program. The Elite Retailers benefit from an additional year’s warranty on all Infratech products, and a store merchandising kit. The company also offers a custom homebuilder program with incentives for model homes and special pricing. While North America is Infratech’s primary focus, the company does have some distribution in New Zealand with future plans to launch in Europe.
AMERICAN MANUFACTURING
All Infratech products are made in the company’s stateof-the art manufacturing facility in Southern California. “Every component of all our heaters is built in-house,” Conway says. He explains this is done throughout every facet of production from custom controls down to placement of each element. “This is what really sets Infratech apart, and it is very rare in an industry that is heavily focused on overseas production and the reliance on third-party manufacturers.”
Furthermore, all systems are manufactured by a dedicated team of people. “It is common to see employees at our factory who have been working at Infratech for 15 years or more.” He attributes this to the company culture, which is that any employee has the power to reject anything that does not live up to
options.
that are made of Textilene are a different story,” Egge says. “And they will be made right here in our plant.”
ABOUT TWITCHELL
Twitchell was founded in 1922 and moved its operations to Alabama in 1955 but did not become a player in outdoor fabrics until 1971, when Textilene made its debut.
The company has about 250 employees at its Alabama facility, and prides itself on the large number who have worked for the company for 20 years or more.
For example, Webb said the person in charge of color matching for the pink fabric project has been with Twitchell for more than 25 years, and one worker in the sample department has been there 62 years—and has no plans to retire anytime soon. “He has a job as long as he wants to come work for us,” she quips.
the Infratech standard of perfection. “Our sales, engineering, customer service, technical support, and production teams all live by that standard.”
Even though Infratech utilizes advanced technologies and equipment, much of the production is still done by hand, which includes each heater being handled with white gloves when it’s packaged. Conway says, “This is why we view Infratech as a premium custom heating solution with unmatched quality.”
Infratech has been the leading manufacturer in the outdoor heating space for over 50 years and as it looks toward the future, the company remains focused on the needs of its customers while maintaining its heritage of quality. Conway says the company is always evaluating new models, control systems, and technologies that meet those customer needs. “Right now, those needs are smart home integration and ensuring long-lasting performance for years to come.” He adds that the company will never sacrifice performance for aesthetics. “We will always focus on heat output as the number one priority.”
In the near future, Infratech will be introducing some new product enhancements, including the way heaters can be installed as well as a new addition to its already extensive custom control options. Conway says at the end of the day, Infratech’s goal is to keep people outdoors longer and later into the season. “The way we do that is selling a high-quality product that is designed around maximum heat output. Infratech remains at the forefront of outdoor heating technology to deliver unparalleled warmth and efficiency.”
