Time flies when you’re having fun. Happy 10th birthday, baby!

This edition marks 10 years of Peninsula Kids magazine. I remember working on the first one like it was yesterday…pleading with our daughter to stand still for, like, 10 seconds so we could take a photo that would end up being our very first front cover.

Born from our website peninsulakids.com.au, a top resource for families and visitors to the peninsula, and with the help of parent company Mornington Peninsula News Group, our hope for Peninsula Kids magazine has always been and always will be to bring quality reading and information on beautiful glossy pages to the community for FREE. We couldn’t do this without the aid of our wonderful contributors and local businesses that also share in our ethos..that this place is AWESOME, and we simply must share!

So much has changed since 2014. (Well, not the pleading with our daughter...now it’s pleading that she’ll actually BE in a photo.)

We’ve learned. We’ve grown. The mag has flexed and moulded with a technologically changing world. That baby face on the cover is turning 15-years-old this year.

What remains unchanged? Our dedication to print a beautiful, (inside and out), product that people look for and pick up.

Please enjoy the spring 2024 edition of Peninsula Kids magazine.

Congratulations to our latest colouring in competition winner! Four-year-old Tiffany has won a Super Pass to The Big Goose to enjoy with her family. Have a wonderful time and pat a baby cow for us!

8 Preventing Toppling Furniture and Televisions

Red Nose and the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) recommend taking steps to prevent unstable furniture and TVs from toppling over and crushing a child.

14 The Unseen Risks of Unconsented Image Sharing and How to Protect Our Children

Once an image is shared online, it is nearly impossible to control where it goes. This lack of control can lead to various issues, such as identity theft, cyberbullying, and even exploitation.

16 Preparing for Financial Ups and Downs

Anticipating and managing seasonal expenses can be challenging, but with a little planning and creativity you can keep your finances in check while enjoying various activities throughout the year.

18 Pause Before You Post

In the digital era, it’s become common practice to share details about our personal lives online. While this is a great way to stay connected with family and friends, it's important to remain mindful of the potential consequences of oversharing online, especially during a separation.

20 Six Powerful Principles to Live a Soulful Life

By integrating these principles, you can move beyond struggles and embrace personal growth and fulfillment, tapping into your inner mastery and understanding yourself at a deeper level.

22 Home Hacks to Slash Your Grocery Bill While Increasing Nutrition

There are some important food hacks that will help you to get the vitamins and nutrients you need without breaking the bank. The key is to shop wisely and understand which foods provide the most value from a nutritional point of view.

24 Tax Effective Ways to Set Up Childrens’ Bank/Trust Accounts

There’s more to helping out your kids financially than fattening their piggy bank. There are a variety of factors to consider from the outset to ensure that your kids don’t wind up paying more in taxes than they ultimately receive from any money you put aside for them.

Furniture and Televisions PreventingToppling

Red Nose and the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) recommend taking steps to prevent unstable furniture and TVs from toppling over and crushing a child.

Red Nose’s National Education and Health Promotion Manager, Loren Rushton, recommends following Product Safety Australia’s tips when buying furniture, especially if you have young children in your home or who might visit.

“Look for the safety and warning labels on furniture and attach, anchor, mount, bolt or otherwise secure furniture and televisions to walls and floors,” said Ms Rushton.

To further prevent accidents at home, Ms. Rushton urges parents to take proactive measures.

“Discourage small children from climbing on furniture and avoid placing tempting items, such as favourite toys, on top of furniture where children might try to reach them.

“Additionally, do not put heavy items on top shelves of bookcases and avoid placing unstable furniture near areas where children play, ” Ms Rushton said.

PRODUCT SAFETY AUSTRALIA’S TIPS

Freestanding household furniture can be dangerous if it falls or topples over. This type of furniture includes the following:

• Bookcases

• Chests of drawers and wardrobes

• Cabinets

• Entertainment units

• Unsecured televisions

• Hall tables, buffets and sideboards

THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING THE PRODUCT

Serious injuries and deaths have happened when furniture or TVs have fallen onto children and adults. For this reason, there’s a mandatory information standard that suppliers and retailers must comply with.

Think about safety when you’re buying furniture and TVs, especially if you have young children in your home or who might visit. When you’re out shopping, use these tips to help you choose safer furniture.

• Examine the furniture to make sure it is stable.

• Pull out any top drawers of a chest of drawers or open doors on other furniture items and apply a little pressure to see how stable the furniture is.

• Make sure the drawers don’t fall out easily.

• Look for built-in drawer stops that limit how far drawers can be extended or interlocks that prevent more than one drawer being opened at a time.

• Look for furniture with sturdy backing material which increases stability.

• Look for low -set furniture, or furniture with a sturdy, stable and broad base. It’s less likely to tip over.

• OK for furniture that comes with safety information or equipment to anchor it to the wall. If it doesn’t, you can buy an anchoring kit. Ask a staff member if you need help to choose the right product for your home.

• Plan your purchase. Think about where the furniture will go. Can you anchor your furniture to the wall or floor?

HOW TO USE THE PRODUCT SAFELY

Place furniture on a flat, even surface where possible. Furniture is more unstable when placed on an uneven or soft surface, such as carpet or a rug.

If you plan to place your furniture on carpet against a wall, check to make sure the carpet isn’t bulging. Sometimes, carpet can become thicker and more uneven at the wall’s edge, and this can make furniture less stable.

The best way to prevent furniture from tipping over is to secure it to the wall or floor.

If your furniture doesn’t come with anchoring hardware, you can buy what you need from a furniture retailer, hardware store or a specialty store for baby goods. You can also do this if you’re securing furniture you’ve had for a while or bought second-hand.

What you’ll need depends on what your wall or floor is made of, and what kind of furniture you’re working with. There are different kinds of wall and floor anchors available.

If you’re not sure, ask for advice at your local hardware shop, or ask a tradesperson.

Most TVs come with anchor straps. You can use them to attach your TV to the wall or to another piece of furniture, like a TV stand or entertainment unit.

Choose a spot for your TV that’s stable and low to the ground. Don’t put TVs on furniture that isn’t intended for this purpose, such as a chest of drawers.

If you secure the TV to a piece of furniture, make sure the furniture is also secured to the wall.

CONSIDER

ANCHORS

Young children don’t understand the risks, but they are the most likely to be hurt or killed by toppling furniture or TVs.

As well as securing your furniture and TVs, here are some thing you can do to help keep them safe:

• Keep your heaviest items at the bottom of your drawers or shelves. Furniture that is top-heavy is easier to tip over.

• Don’t place heavy items such as TVs or items that are attractive to children on top of furniture.

• Put locking devices on all drawers. They help prevent children from opening them and using them as steps.

RISKS AND INJURIES FROM THE PRODUCT

Toppling furniture has killed at least 28 people in Australia since 2000 and causes nearly 20 injuries every week.

Children under five years old are most at risk of serious harm from toppling furniture or TVs.

Toppling furniture can hit, trap or crush someone underneath resulting in the following:

• Broken or dislocated bones

• Head and brain injuries

• Crush injuries

• Suffocation

• Asphyxiation (loss of oxygen).

LOCKING DEVICES

WILL PREVENT DRAWERS BEING USED AS STEPS

Heavy items, such as TVs, placed on top of furniture may fall when furniture becomes unstable, contributing to the severity of injuries.

Although modern TVs are much thinner and lighter when compared to older models, they can still cause serious injuries or death if they topple onto small children.

Opening drawers or doors shifts the weight of the unit forward and the additional weight of a child further increases the risk of toppling.

From 4 May 2025, certain furniture products must comply with the Consumer Goods (Toppling Furniture) Information Standard 2024. This means suppliers must:

• Attach permanent warning labels to furniture

• Display point of sale warnings, both instore and online

• Include information about the risk of toppling furniture in any instruction manuals provided with the furniture.

The unseen risks of UNCONSENTED IMAGE SHARING and how to protect our children

In our digitally connected world, the sharing of images has become an integral part of our daily lives. From capturing precious family moments to celebrating milestones, we often turn to social media to share these snippets with our friends and family. However, this practice comes with its own set of challenges, particularly concerning the unconsented use of images.

In Australia, the discussion around digital privacy and the rights associated with images has gained significant traction. According to a survey conducted by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, 82% of parents expressed concern about their children’s privacy when online. This concern is well-founded, given the increasing instances of image misuse and the potential long-term impact on children's digital footprints.

The unconsented use of images, especially of minors, poses serious risks. Once an image is shared online, it is nearly impossible to control where it goes. This lack of control can lead to various issues, such as identity theft, cyberbullying, and even exploitation.

Moreover, the rise of 'sharenting' – where parents share images of their children on social media – has raised ethical questions about consent. Children, particularly young ones, cannot provide informed consent for their images to be shared. As these images become part of their permanent digital record, they could potentially impact their future personal and professional lives.

As parents, guardians, and responsible digital citizens, it is imperative to take proactive steps to protect the privacy of our children and ourselves. Understanding the risks associated with image sharing is the first step. Parents should educate themselves and their children about the potential consequences of unconsented image use.

Another vital measure is utilising the privacy settings offered by social media platforms, which allow users to control who can see their posts. Parents should ensure that these settings are appropriately configured to limit the audience for their children's images. Additionally, seeking consent before sharing images is crucial. Always seek consent from all parties involved, and for children, consider their age and ability to understand the implications of sharing their images and respect their wishes if they express discomfort.

Using secure platforms that prioritise user privacy and security is also essential. Tinybeans, for instance, offers a secure, private network for sharing family moments, ensuring that images are shared only with trusted individuals.

As we navigate the complexities of the digital age, it is crucial to strike a balance between sharing our lives online and protecting our privacy. The unconsented use of images is not just a violation of privacy but a potential threat to the wellbeing of our children. By taking informed and proactive steps, we can safeguard our digital footprints and create a safer online environment for everyone.

At Tinybeans, we are committed to providing a secure platform for families to share their cherished moments without compromising their privacy. We believe that by raising awareness and promoting responsible digital practices we can collectively address the challenges of unconsented image sharing and ensure a safer digital future for our children.

SEASONAL BUDGETING

Preparing for Financial Up$ and Down$

Do you ever feel like certain times of the year just drain your wallet more than others?

Anticipating and managing seasonal expenses can be challenging, but with a little planning and creativity you can keep your finances in check while enjoying various activities throughout the year.

Whether it's summer outings or winter relaxation, here we outline some points on how to budget effectively.

ANTICIPATING SEASONAL COSTS

Start by reviewing your past spending to identify high-expense periods, such as summer holidays, back-to-school shopping, or the festive season.

Create a calendar of these anticipated costs and set aside a little each month. This way, when the kids are eager for outings or special events, you'll be financially ready.

SAVING DURING HIGH-EXPENSE PERIODS

When high-cost seasons approach, it's time to tighten the belt without losing the fun:

• HOLIDAYS: Start gift shopping early and stick to a budget. Experiences often make better gifts than things—think about a family membership to a local attraction or a voucher for a meal at a café.

• BACK-TO-SCHOOL: Shop during sales, buy in bulk, and consider second-hand uniforms and books.

• SEASONAL ACTIVITIES: Seek out free or low-cost local events, like community markets or outdoor concerts. Enjoying nature can be a great, budget-friendly adventure. The Peninsula has plenty of beautiful spots for family adventures that won't cost a cent.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES (that won't break the bank!)

• SUMMER: Pack a picnic and head to a park, explore local markets, or hike through the Mornington Peninsula National Park.

• AUTUMN: Take in the autumn colours at Cranbourne Royal Botanical Gardens, enjoy a scenic drive or take a free walking tour and discover Frankston's hidden art with the Street Art Explorers Program: www.imaginefrankston.com.au/street-art-explorers

• WINTER: Rug up and watch the waves at one of the peninsula's many beautiful surf beaches. Then, to defrost, enjoy a cosy movie night at home with hot chocolate and homemade snacks.

• SPRING: Plant a garden together, explore McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery, or go for a family bike ride along the Peninsula Link Trail.

ADAPTING TO INCOME VARIABILITY

If your income fluctuates, adjusting your budget can help smooth out the bumps. During high-income periods, focus on saving and paying down debt. Build an emergency fund to cover expenses during leaner months. Track your spending closely and be ready to make adjustments as needed.

Finding additional income sources, like seasonal work or side gigs, can also help bridge the gap.

REVIEWING YOUR HOME LOAN FOR FINANCIAL FLEXIBILITY

One effective yet often overlooked strategy is reviewing your home loan. Interest rates change, and refinancing your home loan could save you significant money each month. Consider speaking to a mortgage broker to explore better deals or more flexible terms that suit your financial situation.

By staying proactive and making small adjustments, you can keep your finances in check while enjoying a variety of activities, no matter the season. Remember, a little planning goes a long way in ensuring your family's financial well-being.

Switching to a home loan with a lower interest rate or features like an offset account or the ability to make extra repayments without penalties can provide more financial breathing room, especially during high-expense periods.

PAUSE BEFORE YOU POST

In the digital era, it’s become common practice to share details about our personal lives online. Whether it's Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, many of us engage daily with multiple social media platforms. While these tools are a great way to stay connected with family and friends, it's important to remain mindful of the potential consequences of oversharing online, especially during a separation.

What many people don’t realise is that in Australia social media content can be used as evidence in court. In other words, if your family matters end up in court for any reason what you have posted online can be used as evidence to support the other party’s case in court (and potentially influence any experts involved in the case or perhaps even the Judge).

Whether it’s content you’ve posted yourself, or something you’ve been tagged in, digital evidence can be used to demonstrate aspects of your character, activities you’ve engage in, or even your capacity as a parent, whether it is an accurate portrayal or not.

Let’s us now look at how social media can be used as evidence in two types of matters.

Spousal maintenance and child support:

After separation or divorce, one party may be required to pay spousal maintenance or child support to financially assist their ex-partner and/ or child. If that person fails to make a payment – or claims financial hardship – but posts to social media showing new assets acquired, or expensive holidays taken, this type of content can be used to challenge someone’s financial position.

Children’s arrangements:

When determining parenting orders, what’s deemed to be in the ‘best interests’ of the child is always the paramount consideration. Therefore, any type of post that could create questions around a party’s ability to adequately care for children or provide a safe living environment, could impact the determination of custody agreements and visitation privileges. It is also not uncommon for posts containing commentary about the separation to be used so parties should avoid venting their frustrations about the separation online.

Things can very easily be taken out of context on social media, so regardless of whether you’re experiencing a bitter breakup or an amicable au revoir, play it safe and keep your thoughts and feelings offline during a separation.

It is also important to note that under section 121 of the Family Law Act, it’s an offence to publish any account of your court proceedings that can identify a party to the proceedings. This is punishable by fines or even imprisonment.

If you have concerns around anything your ex is posting online, you should inform your family lawyer immediately.

Navigating separation or divorce is undoubtedly a complex and emotionally challenging time. While it can be tempting to turn to social media to vent, reflect and seek support, the digital realm should always be approached with caution.

six powerful principles to live...

Have you felt like your life has been a roller coaster, filled with struggles and a sense of being stuck? As a healer, teacher, and holistic counsellor, I discovered six powerful principles developed over 30 years of research, healing and practice which have transformed my life and the lives of hundreds of clients. By integrating these principles, you can move beyond struggles and embrace personal growth and fulfillment, tapping into your inner mastery and understanding yourself at a deeper level.

A So f l Life

1Positive Thinking and Creating Alignment

By cultivating a positive mindset and understanding vibration and frequency, you align yourself to manifest the life you envision. The universe mirrors what you vibrate, think, and feel. Your words shape the energetic landscape of your existence. Just as tuning into a radio frequency is essential to hear clearly, aligning with the exact vibrational frequency is crucial to manifest your desires. You can raise your vibration by being aware of your thoughts, words, and feelings. This principle helps you apply the laws of attraction, closing the gap between the future and the present.

Reprogramming Childhood Wounding

To understand our subconscious limiting beliefs, we must explore the inner child, which consists of two aspects; the free child and the wounded child. The free child embodies our playful and joyful aspects, while the wounded child clings to past traumas, seeking evidence to support limiting beliefs. These unhealed beliefs persist into adulthood, shaping our subconscious patterns and impacting our lives. This is crucial for personal growth. By reprogramming these thoughts, we can replace limiting beliefs with positive ones. Reclaiming our power by nurturing the free child allows us to live a soulful life, filled with joy, creativity, and boundless potential.

3

The Light and Dark Sides of Your Being

Everything in existence is made up of duality: up and down, left and right, positive and negative. We, too, have dual aspects—light and dark and we need to explore and embrace both sides to fully love ourselves. By accepting our light and dark qualities, we achieve a holistic sense of self. Both serve us differently, and both sides are equally needed to live authentically. Living our truth means accepting even the parts we've been taught to hide. This journey of self-acceptance and balance is how we live a soulful life, staying true to our authentic selves and embracing our complete being.

5 4 2

Relationships and Soul Contract

At our core, we are all beings of love. Despite challenges, our fundamental desire is to give and receive love. Relationships serve as powerful catalysts for self-discovery and realisation. We explore the soul connections we've contracted in this lifetime and the roles they play in our personal growth and evolution. These soul members teach us vital lessons, helping us rise higher and move into our purpose. Embrace these connections, as they are essential for our journey.

Connecting to Source, Connection to you

To live a soulful life, embrace the concept that you are a spiritual being having a human experience. You are energy, and understanding its flow, frequency, and vibration helps you achieve your goals and transform your life. Here you will establish a deep connection with your inner self and the universe, discovering your purpose; delving into your conscious, subconscious, and unconscious mind and recognising that you create your own reality. By harmonising your inner child, human self, and higher self, you will gain profound self-awareness and realise your life's purpose. Embrace your power, live intentionally, and make a meaningful impact. This is the first step to living a soulful life.

6

Feminine and Masculine Power

The journey deepens when you unite with the most significant relationship of all: the one with yourself. To obtain a healthy relationship, with self you need to understand the energies that shape this bond—your feminine and masculine powers. These energies create a ripple effect, positively impacting those around you, especially your intimate partner, reflecting back to you how you feel about yourself. Feminine energy embodies openness, emotional depth, nurturing, creativity, compassion, and warmth. Masculine energy represents security, strength, directness, focus, purpose, and goal orientation. By balancing and nurturing both energies with love, respect, and communication allows you to live a soulful, fulfilled life.

These six powerful principles will help you acquire the knowledge to fully understand the secrets to healing, transformation and self-mastery. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can achieve the success and fulfillment you've always desired, and how deeply you'll come to understand yourself better.

HOME HACKS

TO SLASH YOUR GROCERY BILLS WHILE INCREASING NUTRITION

Australia is facing a nutrition emergency. I am deeply concerned about the declining state of many people's health. The reality is that with the cost of living soaring, many people can't afford to buy fresh food and groceries and they are also having to cut back on essential nutritional supports such as supplements.

Many Australians are facing difficult decisions; they are having to cut back on important foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables and lean meat because they need to pay their power bills and mortgage repayments. Older Australians in particular, who rely on supplements to support joint pain and keep up their immunity to fight off colds and flu, are also having to cut back on these essential life items.

There are some important food hacks that will help you to get the vitamins and nutrients you need without breaking the bank. The key is to shop wisely and understand which foods provide the most value from a nutritional point of view.

Here are my top tips on how to eat well on a budget.

PLAN YOUR MEALS

I know planning your meals is a no-brainer, but very few people actually do it and, if they do, they don't do it well. Plan your meals for the week and make a shopping list based on your plan. This helps you to avoid impulse buys and ensures you only purchase what you need.

UTILISE LEFTOVERS

Plan meals that can use leftovers from previous meals to minimise waste. This ensures that you squeeze very ounce out of the food you buy and prepare.

BUY IN BULK

Increase the role of whole grains and legumes in your diet. Purchase items like rice, oats, quinoa, lentils and beans in bulk. They are often cheaper per unit and have a long shelf life.

Purchase nuts and seeds in larger quantities to get a better price per unit. Carrots are a cheap and nutrient-dense vegetable to include in your diet. Brown rice is also a fantastic, cheap food that can be bought in bulk. It provides fibre, vitamins and minerals.

STOCK UP ON DRIED FOODS SUCH AS PASTA

While both dried and fresh pasta are made from similar ingredients, dried pasta typically contains more fibre and has a lower moisture content compared to fresh pasta. As a result, dried pasta tends to be more shelf-stable and may offer slightly more nutritional benefits, particularly when it comes to fibre content. It is also very cheap and versatile. You can do a lot with pasta.

OPT FOR FROZEN AND CANNED FOODS

We are always told to eat fresh, but the reality is that fresh food is very expensive at the moment. The good news is that frozen and canned foods do provide a lot of benefits.

Frozen fruits and vegetables can be just as nutritious as fresh ones and are often cheaper. They also have a longer shelf life. When purchasing canned goods, look for no-salt-added or low-sodium options for canned vegetables and fruits packed in water or their own juice. Canned beans and tomatoes are versatile and inexpensive. Canned fish has many health benefits and is significantly cheaper than fresh seafood.

SHOP SEASONALLY AND LOCALLY

Fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually less expensive and fresher. Many local markets or local produce stands can offer fresh produce at lower prices compared to supermarkets.

Look for ugly produce. Picture perfect fruit and vegetables are placed on shelves to garner the highest prices possible. Look for discount bins with ugly produce. They are just as good but don't look as perfect.

AVOID PRE-MADE MEALS

Preparing meals at home is usually more cost-effective than eating out or buying pre-made meals. It also allows you to control the ingredients and portion sizes. Cook larger portions and freeze leftovers for future meals. This saves time and money.

OPT FOR LESS EXPENSIVE PROTEIN SOURCES

Shop for plant-based proteins such as beans, lentils, tofu and eggs. They are nutritious and generally less expensive than meat. Meat cuts like chicken thighs, drumsticks and ground turkey or beef are often more affordable. Slow-cooking these can make them tender and flavourful.

MINIMISE FOOD WASTE

Store your food well to extend its shelf life. Use the whole food to ensure you get value from the products. Use all parts of vegetables such as broccoli stems. These can be added to soup with other leftovers to create a wonderful meal full of goodness.

BUY GENERIC BRANDS

Ditch brands where possible. Home brands often offer the same quality as name brands but at a lower cost.

GROW YOUR OWN FOOD

Home grown food is not only cost effective, but also healthy. Where possible, grow your own herbs, vegetables and fruits. Even a small herb garden on a windowsill can save money and provide fresh, flavourful additions to meals.

SUPPLEMENT WHERE NEEDED

The reality is that during times of financial hardship, people don't eat as well as what they should. This can affect your long-term health. Find some money in your budget for vitamins and activated phenolics. Vitamins help to add crucial nutrients to your diet and activated phenolics support over-all health and wellbeing at a cellular level which is important to help your body fight nasties when you are stressed, tired and not getting enough good nutritious food into your body.

Renovatio Bioscience was founded by Dr Vincent in 2016 following his breakthrough discovery while undertaking antioxidant research at the University of Newcastle. He developed a laboratory technique to extract the world's most potent antioxidants 'activated phenolics' from Australian apples and other produce using only water. His innovative work solved an issue, which had been perplexing scientists all over the world for nearly 80 years.

Dr Vincent patented and translated his innovative work into a range of 'turbo charged' health and wellness products to help people access the world's most potent antioxidants in an 'easy to consume' form. www.renovatio.com.au

Tax Effective ways

There’s more to helping out your kids financially than fattening their piggy bank. How you go about it will determine how much both they and the taxman ultimately receive. As the old saying goes, only two things are certain in life: death and taxes. And children aren’t exempt from this. There are a variety of factors to consider from the outset to ensure that your kids don’t wind up paying more in taxes than they ultimately receive from any money you put aside for them.

1. Consider your why

Before determining where to put funds for your kids, first think about exactly why you want to do so. Is it to help with their education costs? To buy their first car? Save for a house deposit? Or give them a helping hand just because you love them? What the money is intended for will determine at what age they access it, which has tax implications, as well as the length of time these funds will need to grow. A house deposit will clearly take longer to save than a car purchase (unless perhaps you’re intending them to drive away in a Ferrari). This will also help determine whether those funds will be accessed as a lump sum or as an ongoing distribution/income stream once your child reaches a certain age.

2. Where will the funds come from?

Are you paying a lump sum to compound over time? Or do you plan to contribute small amounts regularly over the years to come? Perhaps your child has/will contribute money from their own savings and/ or their pocket money or earnings from work? For babies, have you/ will you ask family and friends to forgo presents of toys and clothes in favour of a financial contribution to their first savings account? Where the money comes from, and how often it will be topped up, will help guide you towards the right type of account or investment.

4. Structure it well

Once you have considered your child’s needs and your wishes in terms of purpose, flexibility, tax, and age, you’re able to better determine the right structure to use for their savings and investments. Whose name it is to be held in – yours and/or your partner’s, a company or Trust, or your child’s – as this will affect tax liabilities. One popular example is a Testamentary Trust, which comes into effect upon your death. However, it must be set up properly as part of your will. There are other trusts too that serve particular purposes, such as special disability trusts if you have a child with special needs, which have different concessions for Centrelink and tax. As part of your deliberations, consider risk, term, and whether you will have a capital gain or if it is just bank interest. Are you investing in a high-interest savings account, term deposit, bond, managed fund, property for example.

3. Factor childhood tax rates

Did you know that children are taxed differently to adults? Minors can earn just $416 of unearned income (that is, income generated from investments or dividends) tax-free per year before they pay a whopping 66 per cent tax. And the highest marginal tax rate is applied if that income exceeds $1,307. That is a stark contrast to the current $18,200 income tax-free threshold for adults. Knowing this difference may cause you to rethink your approach to letting children access investment income or distribute funds from a trust before they turn 18.

5. Are you a blended family?

Blended families account for 3.5 per cent of Australian families, while 8.5 per cent have a step-parent. A further 15.9 per cent of Aussie families are single parent households, meaning they too could become blended families in the future as new relationships form. Providing for children within these blended families warrants particular consideration. There is a need to ensure that children from both current and previous relationships are provided for equally. In doing so, the current partner/ spouse should be protected while minimising what can be accessed or challenged by the ex. Given superannuation is treated separately from a will, naming children of previous relationships as beneficiaries can be a straightforward way of achieving this.

6. Don’t forget about inflation

With inflation currently at multi-decade highs, it is a timely reminder to analyse how inflation will affect the value of funds your child ultimately receives. For instance, low-yielding savings and investments may actually leave your kids with less buying power in real terms than what that money could buy today. Allowing children access to trust dividends or savings accounts at age 18, rather than say 25, could allow them to prepay tertiary education courses – avoiding hefty indexation on student loans and hence lowering their payable taxes during their working life.

Every parent wants the best for their children. If you are putting money aside for their future, the aim should be for them to get the best value from it.

Grace Josephine

It all started with an orange.

Originally from the UK, local children’s author Grace Josephine came to Australia in 2014 as a 20-year old backpacker, with no idea what lay ahead of her. To gain her second year visa, she worked as a citrus fruit packer in Bundaberg, Queensland.

It was there that Grace unlocked her passion for writing rhyming stories… After realising that the ‘ugly’ fruit was in fact thrown into the bin, and in sheer boredom of being on the sorting table six days per week (sorting the good fruit from the bad fruit), Grace pondered to herself ‘surely these undesirable oranges can have a purpose’.

And that was the birth of her first publication, CrustytheOrange, who finds himself surrounded by ‘perfect’ oranges who all know what they want to be in life. Poor Crusty is “so dry that he can’t even cry” and feels he has no purpose in life. Then wise old Marie the Tree sends Crusty on the adventure of a lifetime to find his special place in life, reminding readers that “no matter how big or small, we all have a purpose and a place to shine, so follow your dreams and all will be fine”.

From there, Grace has published two more rhyming picture books, with further publications on the horizon.

TheBendyTree is about being adaptable and flexible during ‘storms’ and challenging times. As life chops and changes and throws its inevitable curveballs, The Bendy Tree reminds us to remain flexible and adapt to whatever change comes our way, moving with it rather than fighting against it.

“When storms and change knock on our door, we must become bendier than ever before. Ride with the wind and go with the flow, adapt and be flexible and there you shall grow”.

Lou the Lost Witch is Grace’s latest publication and focuses on the concept that real beauty is on the inside and to never judge a book by its cover; you never know what you’re going to find when you open it!

Lou is a ‘good witch’ and doesn’t feel she belongs in Witchville, “she hates toads and potions too, and almost cries if you say BOO!”. Lou looks for a new place to call home, but sadly, everywhere she goes she is rejected by people because of the way she looks. That is until she meets a sweet old man named Joe, who sees Lou’s real beauty on the inside. On Lou’s birthday Joe surprises Lou with a party and has told “the whole neighbourhood about his friend named Lou who is sweet and good”. We then realise that Joe is in fact blind so “didn’t judge how Lou appeared, he saw her beauty on the inside and not what people feared”.

As Halloween approaches, Lou is the perfect book to celebrate witches and remind children of this ever important message - to always look beneath what meets the eye. Remain inquisitive; there are always factors we can’t initially see that are looming behind the scenes.

Beautiful Ballam Park

Ballam Park provides a great day out for people of all ages, with two regional playground areas, 30 hectares of open areas and sporting fields including a premier athletics track, AFL, soccer and cricket. and it continues to cement its position as one of Frankston City’s most popular attractions for locals and visitors with exciting new opportunities for active and passive recreation rolling out in the coming months.

In October, an impressive bioretention system and lake will open at the northern end of the park (Naranga Crescent entrance). The system will significantly reduce stormwater contamination flowing into Port Phillip Bay by creating a natural filtration system using plants, water circulation and aeration.

Frankston City Council is enhancing the system with an ornamental lake and community amenities such as lighting, public art, seating, BBQ and shelter, landscaping, drinking fountain and connecting pathways to create a new experience for visitors to Ballam Park which will all complement the existing sport and recreation and play spaces in the park.

Ballam Park is already home to sports ovals, play spaces, athletic facilities, dog on and off-leash facilities, walking paths, outdoor exercise equipment and of course the historic homestead.

Also recently completed is stage two of the play space upgrade at the southern end of the reserve, featuring climbing and imaginative play opportunities for children, to complement the recent other play space upgrades, including water play, which has proven a hit year-round.

In addition, local athletes are also looking forward to the completion of the Ballam Park Athletics Pavilion in October 2024, which follows the recent track upgrade completed in March 2023.

CTop Tips for Right Subjects in High School Choosing the

hoosing the right subjects can be overwhelming especially if your teen has no idea what career path they want to follow. Successful subject selection is based on an individual’s self-perception which involves considering how interests, skills, abilities, values and goals can influence career decision-making. Understanding what these are and how other influences such as family, peers, and society affect subject selection choices is the first place to start.

Apart from their school career counselling services and private professionals like myself, there are various resources to help your teen learn more about themselves; about what influences them and how, and of their world of work in general. “MyFuture” is an online resource that explores career pathways and provides tools to develop self-knowledge to help with career decision-making. Here, your teen can create a career profile that outlines their interests, skills, abilities and values and matches these to suggested occupations. You will need to create a free account to access these resources. Visit: www.myfuture.edu.au

MEDICINE LAW SCIENCE I.T. ENGINEERING MARKETING FINANCE

Here are some practical tips to help your teen in their decision-making process. Have them read the following and then discuss the answers with you.

1. Identify Your Interests and Values

• Examine School Subjects: Think about which subjects you look forward to the most. Which subject makes your heart flutter or your stomach drop? Are you passionate about human rights or the environment? If so, a career in advocacy or disability support, or environmental sciences might interest you.

• Explore Hobbies and Extracurriculars: Your hobbies and extracurricular activities can provide clues about which subjects might interest you. If you love being outdoors and playing sport, then a Sports and Recreation course might interest you.

2. Assess Your Skills and Abilities

• Review Past Performance: Look at your grades and get feedback from your teachers. Which subjects did you excel in? Which subject did you struggle with? Do you need that subject for your desired career path or further study?

• Skills, abilities and Talents: Match your current skills and abilities with your subject selection. If you are not proficient at maths, do you need to do this in year 11? Is there another subject better aligned with your strengths that can still help you meet your career goals?

3. Plan for the Future – What are your Initial Goals?

• Research Career Paths: If you have a particular career in mind, research the subjects required or recommended for that field. Ensure these align with your skills, interests and abilities.

• Plan for Further Education: What subjects are required for entry to your desired TAFE or university course?

Be prepared to adjust your choices if you discover new interests or decide on a different career path. The goal you had at the start of year 10 might be very different to the one you have at the commencement of year 11, and that is ok.

4. Consult with Advisors and Mentors

• Talk to Teachers and Counsellors: They can offer guidance based on your academic performance, skills, abilities, values and interests, and help to match these with different career options.

• Seek Advice from Family/Friends/Peers: Discuss your options with those who know you well and can provide additional perspectives but, be aware of the pressure that can be felt from these influences and how that can affect your decision-making.

5. Consider Workload and Balance

• Manageable Workload: Choose a combination of challenging and less demanding subjects to avoid stress and anxiety.

• Balance Your Schedule: Ensure that your chosen subjects fit well with your overall schedule, allowing time for study, extracurricular activities, relaxation and any work commitments. Select a mix of subjects that cover your interests while meeting further study/employment requirements.

6. Understand the Subject Content

• Review Course Content: Look at the course outline to understand what each subject involves and decide if it aligns with your interests, abilities, values and goals.

• Speak with Current Students: If possible, talk to students currently taking the subjects you’re considering to get their perspective on what to expect.

7. Use Available Resources

• Career Counselling Services: Utilise school career counselling services and/or qualified private career counsellors like myself to get personalised advice, vocational assessment interpretations, assistance with interview and resume prep, employment and further study applications and access to general resources.

• Online Tools and Quizzes: As mentioned, use online tools or quizzes that help you assess your interests and strengths, which can provide additional guidance.

Aligning subject selection with interests, skills, abilities, values and goals will help to ensure a more enjoyable high school experience and set your teen on a successful career path. Having a strong sense of self and of their world of work will help them make informed decisions about their high school subjects and in turn, help them to achieve their academic and personal goals.

Crucial Skills Kids Need to Succeed

Society is changing at a rapid pace. Technological advancement has spearheaded significant changes in the way people live, socialise and work and this rate of change is expected to accelerate as AI and other technology continues to evolve.

While teaching children to learn fundamental skills such as mathematics and comprehension is of critical importance, so is the need to equip them with many other skills in order to navigate their way through the world. Learning and development should not just be about the school curriculum; it should include key skills such as life skills. There are a number of key life skills that we incorporate into our learning model and I strongly encourage parents to embrace these in order to help their children prepare for the world ahead, which is rapidly changing.

To be successful as adults, children need to develop a diverse set of skills that encompass cognitive, social, emotional and practical abilities. There are some key skills that children should learn to be successful as grown-ups.

Here is a list of skills that should be incorporated into learning activities.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Understanding basic financial concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing and managing money is essential for financial independence and stability as adults. Teaching children about the value of money, responsible spending habits and long-term financial planning prepares them to make informed decisions about their finances.

These skills are vital to assist young people to develop an understanding of the financial system, financial security and how to manage money and should be taught from a young age. Scammers target people of all ages, not just adults.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Effective communication skills, including verbal and nonverbal communication, listening, writing, and public speaking, are essential for success in personal and professional relationships. Teaching children how to express themselves clearly, articulate their thoughts and communicate with empathy and respect helps them build strong interpersonal connections and navigate social interactions effectively.

The ability to build and manage healthy and robust relationships is the cornerstone of business and life. Children need to learn these concepts from a young age.

CRITICAL THINKING

The ability to think critically, analyse information, evaluate evidence and make reasoned decisions is crucial for success in today's complex world. Teaching children how to question assumptions, consider multiple perspectives and solve problems creatively fosters independent thinking and intellectual curiosity.

We showcase these principles as part of our tutoring services as we consider this skill to be a vital part of learning.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Emotional intelligence encompasses self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and social skills, which are essential for managing emotions, building relationships and navigating social situations effectively.

Teaching children how to recognise and regulate their emotions, understand others' perspectives and communicate empathetically helps them develop healthy relationships and cope with life's challenges.

RESILIENCE

Resilience refers to the ability to bounce back from adversity, overcome setbacks and adapt to change. Teaching children resilience involves fostering a growth mindset, building coping strategies and encouraging perseverance in the face of challenges.

Resilient individuals are better equipped to navigate obstacles, pursue goals and thrive in a dynamic and uncertain world.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

Problem-solving skills enable individuals to identify, analyse and solve complex problems effectively. Teaching children how to think critically, break down problems into manageable steps and explore creative solutions empowers them to tackle challenges with confidence and resourcefulness.

DIGITAL LITERACY

In today’s digital age, proficiency with technology and digital tools is essential for success in education, work and daily life. Teaching children digital literacy skills, such as computer literacy, information literacy, online safety and responsible use of technology, helps them navigate the digital landscape responsibly and ethically.

It also helps to keep them alert and safe online, particularly given children spend so much time online gaming, socialising and learning.

ADAPTABILITY

Given the rapid pace of change and technological advancements, adaptability is a critical skill for success in the 21st century. Teaching children how to be flexible, open-minded and resilient in the face of uncertainty prepares them to navigate transitions, embrace new opportunities and thrive in a rapidly changing world.

COLLABORATION

The ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people is essential for success in today's interconnected world. Teaching children teamwork, communication and conflict resolution skills helps them build positive relationships, leverage collective strengths and achieve common goals effectively.

LIFELONG LEARNING

Encouraging a love of learning and a growth mindset empowers children to become lifelong learners. Instilling a curiosity for exploration, a thirst for knowledge and a willingness to embrace new ideas and experiences prepares children to adapt, grow and succeed in an ever-changing world.

By cultivating these essential skills in children, parents, educators and communities can help prepare them for the challenges and opportunities they will encounter as adults and empower them to lead fulfilling and successful lives.

Founded by Michael Black in 2017, Success Tutoring is Australia’s fastest growing education centre with ten locations and a further 80 cites planned by 2026. The company offers weekly tutoring sessions in English and Maths for students aged five to 17, with a school readiness program for kids even younger, and selective school exam preparation tutoring also available. The Success Model not only empowers students to work at their own pace towards progress but also finds success in the social aspect of students coming together and working as a community of students to find motivation, inspiration and a lifelong love of learning. www.successtutoring.com.au

Discover Your Potential in a Flexible Learning Environment

Foundation College is a new small independent, coeducation school which provides education to students who have not succeeded in mainstream education, for 15-19 aged young people.

The need for inclusive educational institutions has never been more pressing. The establishment of Foundation College marks a significant step forward in addressing the educational and emotional needs of some of the most vulnerable young people in our communities. Foundation College is not just another school; it is a vital resource for those who have found themselves on the margins of the mainstream education system, offering them a chance to reconnect with learning in a way that resonates with their unique circumstances. a significant step forward in addressing the educational and emotional needs of some of the most vulnerable young people in our communities.

The young people who will benefit from Foundation College's programs are those who have faced disruptions in their lives, leading them to disengage from traditional schooling. At Foundation College, we recognize that these young people require more than just academic instruction; they need a holistic approach that encompasses their overall wellbeing. This is where Foundation College truly stands out—by providing extensive wraparound support, we ensure that

every student has the opportunity to thrive, both academically and personally. Our team of registered teachers, learning support staff, and wellbeing professionals are all trained in trauma-informed education, ensuring that we deliver the most effective and supportive programs for our students.

Foundation College’s curriculum is designed with the complex needs of these young people in mind. We understand that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for all students. Instead, FC offers an alternative educational pathway that is both engaging and supportive, allowing students to rebuild their confidence and rediscover their love for learning. Our campuses, located in the main population centers of Frankston and Narre Warren, are equipped to deliver this innovative curriculum in a setting that fosters growth, resilience, and success.

At the heart of Foundation College’s offerings are the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) and the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC). These programs are specifically tailored to meet the needs of students who are looking for practical, applied learning opportunities. The VCE VM is a two-year vocational program that prepares students for the workforce or further education through a non-ATAR pathway. It emphasises practical, lifelong learning by focusing on literacy, numeracy, work-related skills,

and personal development—all within a social and community context.

The Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC), another cornerstone of FC’s curriculum, provides an alternative senior secondary qualification that is recognized across the state. Like the VCE VM, the VPC is designed to enhance students’ educational pathways and job readiness, ensuring that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their future endeavors.

Both programs are accredited and provide students with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of the modern world. By integrating these programs into a holistic educational approach, Foundation College is not only addressing the academic needs of its students but also their emotional and social development. This comprehensive support system is what sets FC apart from other educational institutions.

Foundation College is more than just a school—it is a community where vulnerable young people can find the support they need to overcome the challenges they face. It is a place where they can reconnect with education in a way that is meaningful and relevant to their lives. By offering a curriculum that is both rigorous and flexible, Foundation College provides its students with the opportunity to succeed on their own terms, empowering them to build a brighter future.

Why FiRST Early Learning is a Multicultural Haven for our children

As a parent, choosing the right early learning centre for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. You want a place where your child will feel safe, loved, and inspired to learn. But in today’s diverse world, you also want a place where your child’s cultural identity is not just recognised but celebrated. For our family, that place is FiRST Early Learning.

From the moment we first walked through the doors, we knew we had found something special. The atmosphere at FiRST Early Learning is warm and welcoming, with an energy that feels like a vibrant, bustling community. The walls are adorned with artwork and photographs that reflect the beautiful diversity of the children and families who attend. It was immediately clear to us that this is a place where differences are not just tolerated— they’re embraced.

One of the things that struck us right away was how much passion the educators put into making every child feel included and valued. The educators come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, which adds a richness to the learning experience that you don’t find everywhere. They bring their own stories, traditions, and languages into the classroom, creating a truly multicultural environment where every child can see a piece of themselves reflected day to day.

What’s more, the curriculum at FiRST Early Learning goes beyond the standard early education fare. Our child has learned about festivals from around the world, tasted foods from different countries, and even tried out traditional dances from places they might not visit until much later in life. These experiences have broadened their understanding of the world and sparked a curiosity about different cultures that we hope will last a lifetime.

FiRST Early Learning does an immaculate job of weaving cultural inclusivity into every aspect of the day. Whether it’s story time with books that feature characters from diverse backgrounds or art projects that celebrate different cultural heritages, the focus is always on helping children appreciate the beauty of diversity. We love that our child is growing up in an environment where every culture is given a place of honour.

As parents, we also appreciate how FiRST Early Learning makes an effort to include families in the learning process. We’ve been invited to share our own cultural traditions with the centre, whether it’s cooking a dish from our heritage or talking about a holiday that’s important to our family. This not only helps our child feel proud of where they come from but also gives them the chance to learn about the backgrounds of their peers.

In a world that sometimes feels divided, FiRST Early Learning is a beacon of inclusivity. It’s a place where every child’s cultural identity is not just acknowledged but celebrated, where differences are viewed as strengths, and where children learn that the world is a richer place because of its diversity.

As parents, we couldn’t ask for more. Our child is not only receiving an excellent education but is also being taught the values of empathy, respect, and understanding.

At FiRST Early Learning, they’re not just preparing for school, they’re preparing for life in a multicultural world. And as a family born outside of Australia, we are grateful to be part of such a welcoming and inclusive community.

'About children being children'

Choosing an Early learning centre isn’t just about finding a place where your child will learn to sing the ABCs or count to ten. It’s about finding a place where they’ll be excited to explore, eager to learn, and feel right at home in a world that’s as diverse and colourful as they are.

At FiRST Early Learning, we’re not just teaching children the basics—we’re introducing them to the world in all its multicultural glory.

Imagine walking into a place where every corner bursts with passionate masterpieces, beautiful culture, and life.

At FiRST Early Learning, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Our walls aren’t just walls—they’re a celebration of global culture, showcasing everything from Diwali decorations , Chinese lanterns to Aboriginal dream time stories. Here, your child isn’t just another face in the crowd; they’re part of a vibrant community where every culture is celebrated, and every story is valued.

Now, why is cultural inclusivity so important to us? Because we know that when children see their own culture reflected in their environment, they don’t just feel included—they feel celebrated. Children from all backgrounds bring something unique to the table, and at FiRST Early Learning, we make sure that table is big enough for everyone. We’re

not just talking about diversity; we’re living it, every single day.

Our approach to multiculturalism goes beyond the surface. Sure, we love celebrating international holidays and teaching children to say “hello” in different languages, but it’s more than that. It’s about making sure every child feels genuinely seen, heard, and understood. We’re talking about weaving cultural inclusivity into the very fabric of our daily activities—whether that’s through the stories we read, the experiences we play, or the conversations we have.

Our educators come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, bringing their own perspectives and experiences into the classroom. This isn’t just a job for them; it’s a passion. And when children see teachers from different backgrounds working together, they learn something priceless: diversity isn’t just something to appreciate—it’s something to celebrate.

At FiRST Early Learning, our multicultural approach isn’t just a nice add-on; it’s at the core of everything we do. Our curriculum is designed to broaden your child’s horizons, incorporating global perspectives and multicultural themes. Whether they’re creating art inspired by different cultures, learning about international celebrations, or even tasting foods from around the world, your child

Childcare

is getting a global education without ever leaving the classroom.

The environment at FiRST Early Learning reflects our commitment to diversity in every way. We want every child to see themselves in our space—to feel that sense of pride and belonging that comes from knowing their culture is valued and respected.

At FiRST Early Learning, we’re not just preparing children for the next step in their education—we’re preparing them for life. We’re teaching them that the world is full of different perspectives, and that’s what makes it so interesting.

We foster an environment where children learn to embrace differences with open hearts and open minds, setting them up to be thoughtful, curious, and compassionate global citizens.

So, if you’re searching for a place where your child can grow, learn, and thrive in an inclusive and welcoming environment, look no further than FiRST Early Learning. Here, every culture is celebrated, every child is cherished, and every day is an adventure in discovering the beautiful diversity of the world around

GWays to reduce in Uncertain Times

iven the uncertainties existing in the world today, it is normal and natural to be feeling varying levels of anxiety. Certain levels of anxiety, typically known in psychology as eustress, are needed to perform or be effective.

Uncertainty is part of the fabric of life. It is the precursory seed to growth. Growth is a perpetual need of the human condition. Everything from nature, to economies, to markets, to relationships, and to skill sets are either growing or dying, expanding or shrinking, breathing out or breathing in. As Ray Kroc, former CEO of McDonalds once said, “We are either green and growing or ripe and rotting.”

This means uncertainty has always been and always will be present. How we respond or react will determine our levels of anxiety. If you are experiencing distress (anxiety) in any part of your life, here are 4 ways you can reduce your level of anxiety. ❶

PROCRASTINATE.

Really? Yes. Procrastination is an emotional regulation technique, which has both positive and negative qualities. Perhaps cleaning your desk for six hours so you can avoid a difficult decision or phone call may be on the negative side. However, going for a walk around the block as you prepare for the challenging activity at hand can be a resourceful and useful way to emotionally regulate. Research in structured procrastination shows how we can increase creativity. Being creative of mind can show us options to tackle the uncertainty we face in ways we had not thought of.

❷ BALANCE THE CERTAINTY VS UNCERTAINTY SCALE. This scale is delicately balanced and never remains still. When balanced, not only does anxiety reduce, but it can also disappear from our experience. When unbalanced we go from one extreme (boredom) to another (overwhelming anxiety).

The more certainty we can bring into our daily or weekly activities, the more uncertainty we can handle. Whilst having rituals in your daily routine adds predictability and structure, there is another way to build a psychological on ramp to certainty which has more meaning. The most sustainable way to access certainty is to discover, embrace and action a hobby which truly sings to our soul. In other words, commit to a hobby you can do at least 2- 3 times per week which brings you meaning and fulfillment.

Harvard psychologist, Howard Garner identified in his seminal 1983 book “Frames of Mind” that we have eight intelligences, later adding a ninth. All of us are intelligently gifted, more in some than others. This would hugely influence the kind of hobby we find most enjoyable. Hobby categories which reflect Gardner’s work range from the physical, creative, musical, artistic, mathematical, intellectual and philosophical. Dedicate yourself to a hobby which aligns to your natural intelligence. This will uplift in magical ways.

❸ HOPE.

Positive psychologist, Richard Snyder coined the term “hope theory.” According to Snyder, hopeful thinkers achieve more and are physically and psychologically healthier than less hopeful people. Hope is having something to look forward to weekly, even daily. As already mentioned, embracing a meaningful hobby is a powerful way of connecting us continually to hope. This serves as a significant diffuser of anxiety.

❹ POWER OF NEGATIVE VISUALISATION.

This approach dates back many centuries to Stoic philosophers such as Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus. This practice is very useful in reducing anxiety because it takes the situation we are in, seeing a worser case scenario, which in turn makes us grateful for the original situation we find ourselves in. In turn this generates a feeling of gratitude and appreciation which can often become antidotes for anxiety.

Consciously choosing to embrace structured procrastination, having a meaningful hobby you immerse yourself in several times per week, in turn generating a healthy level of hope, and connecting with gratitude and appreciation via the art of negative visualisation, you will sustainably reduce and keep anxiety at levels which will not negatively impact your life.

FIVE SLEEP HINTS

Are you burning the candle at both ends by staying up late at night trying to meet deadlines? Or maybe you’re going to bed on time, but you’re finding yourself lying awake at night, mind racing with the to-do list, or ruminating on problems? Whatever camp you’re in, you can feel your energy levels and productivity in your business dropping, and you know you need a good night’s sleep. Here are five sleep hacks you can implement, to help you get a more restorative sleep at night.

1 Identity & support body system imbalances

There are some key body systems that can burnout and lead to sleep issues. The top three I always think about are:

Adrenals - When your stress hormones cortisol and DHEA are imbalanced, they can directly impact your production of melatonin (your sleepy hormone) at night, because excess cortisol will suppress melatonin. Overworking during the day or at night will keep your cortisol levels pumping.

...for a Goodsleepnight’s

Brain - If serotonin levels are depleted (often a result of chronic stress), it can compromise your sleep. Serotonin is especially helpful for deep sleep and a balanced mood throughout the day.

Detox Pathways - Are you waking up between 2-4am and struggling to fall back to sleep? Your liver works hardest at night during these times. Often people with detox issues will have disrupted sleep, and can also experience intense dreams and nightmares. Detox issues are more and more prevalent these days, due to overconsumption of caffeine, alcohol, processed foods and environmental toxins.

To discover where your imbalances lie, work with a functional medicine practitioner to test your body systems.

1 Ten minutes of sunlight when you first wake up

Research shows getting outside or in a well-lit spot in your home can support better sleep at night. This is because natural morning light will help you to secrete cortisol in the morning. This not only helps you to feel perky, energised and happier in the morning, but it will also support proper melatonin (sleepy hormone) production at night. You could try eating breakfast outside or do some morning breathwork or journaling. Even if it’s cold, rug up with a dressing gown and beanie. Your night time self will thank you!

3 Turn screens off an hour before bed

Staying on brightly lit screens (TV, computer, smart phone) after the sun goes down really interferes with your melatonin (sleepy hormone) production. Blue-light will suppress melatonin, and will jack up cortisol (stress hormone). This can affect your ability to fall asleep, and the quality of your sleep, leaving you feeling flat, groggy, fatigued and crabby in the morning. If you do need or choose to use screens before bed, there are blue-light filtering apps you can use to reduce exposure, as well as blue-light blocking glasses (the orange-tinted ones are more effective at night time).

4 Reprogramming beliefs behind your behaviour

If you’re in the camp of business owners who stay up late trying to get more work done, or zone out on Netflix after a long day of work then this one's for you. Even though you “know” sleep is important for health and productivity, you keep staying up late, and it’s ruining you. What must you believe about yourself in order to continue behaving this way? Every behaviour has a belief underneath. What are your poor sleep patterns saying about you? Dysfunctional behaviour always comes back to a deeper unconscious core belief like not being good enough, weak, incapable, undeserving, a failure. For example, if unconsciously you believe you’re no good, this could show up as overdoing, trying to prove that you are good enough by what you can achieve. Identifying deeper beliefs and reprogramming will naturally lead to healthier work patterns and better sleep.

5 Go to sleep at the same time & wake up at the same time

Your body loves a regular sleep-wake routine. If you go to bed at the same time every night, and wake at the same time, you will reset your natural sleep-wake cycle, which will lead to more restorative sleep and a happier mood in the morning. Knowing your chronotype can also be helpful. Dr Michael Breus showed there are four distinct chronotypes:

Lion - ideal wake time is 6am, ideal sleep time is 10pm

Bear - ideal wake time is 7am, ideal sleep time is 11pm

Wolf - ideal wake time is 9am, ideal sleep time is 1am.

Dolphin - ideal wake time is 6:30am, ideal sleep time is 11:30pm

What does my thyroid gland do?

Your thyroid gland makes 3 hormones:

1. Thyroxine (T4) is the main hormone made in your thyroid. Thyroxine is changed into triiodothyronine (the active thyroid hormone) in your body.

2. Some triiodothyronine (T3) is also made and released by your thyroid.

Thyroxine and triiodothyronine help control your:

• Health of your muscles and bones

• Brain development

3. Calcitonin is also made in your thyroid gland. This hormone helps control the amount of calcium and phosphate in your body.

What is cradle cap and how is it treated?

Cradle cap is recognisable by the large, greasy, yellow or brown scales that appear on your baby's scalp. These scales will eventually start to flake and may make the affected skin appear red. Sometimes the hair may also come away with the flakes. Cradle cap is not a serious condition and should not cause your child any problems or irritation. However, it is important not to scratch or pick at the cradle cap, in case an infection develops.

Cradle cap requires no specific treatment and will clear up on its own with time. But if you’re unsure at any stage, visit a doctor who can help with the diagnosis and reassure you.

If you want to improve cradle cap faster, massage a small amount of baby oil or olive oil into the scalp at night to soften the patchy scales. In the morning, using a soft baby brush or cloth, gently remove any loose particles, and then wash the hair with a baby shampoo. In time, the crusts will soften and should lift off easily with a cotton bud or soft baby toothbrush. Shampoos that contain ground nut oil or peanut oil are best avoided in children under 5 years old.

Why does my child need x-rays with the Orthodontist if they have had some recently with their general dentist?

X- rays (also called radiographs) are essential in assessing and diagnosing orthodontic problems and determining an orthodontic treatment plan. They are necessary prior to commencing any orthodontic treatment to ensure we have all the required information before making any changes to the mouth and jaws.

The most common x-rays that are taken by general dentists are called bitewings or periapical radiographs. These are small and detailed pictures of three to four pairs of teeth used to check the health of the teeth and to screen for pathology or decay.

Orthodontists, however, require x-rays that show all the teeth and the relationship of the jaws. These are called panoramic and cephalometric x-rays. When required we also take 3D x- rays which give even more detailed information which can help with viewing things that cannot be fully assessed with 2D x-rays. These x-rays provide 3D information on the following:

1. Presence and position of unerupted teeth

2. Missing, extra, impacted or misplaced teeth that could affect the eruption of other permanent teeth

3. Health of suppor ting structures like alveolar bone, jaw joints, jaw bones, and sinuses

4. Position of the jaws in relation to the teeth and to the soft tissue

5. Size and shape of the jaw and presence of any asymmetry

6. Presence of pathology

The above information provides essential information to the orthodontist so that they can determine where the problems exist and the best way to manage them with orthodontic treatment. Radiographs are also taken during and after orthodontic treatment to monitor how treatment is progressing, checking teeth health and positions, as well as the development of any wisdom teeth.

Although a number of radiographs are associated with orthodontic treatment, they account for a very small percentage of radiation that you would normally come across on a daily basis. For example, a panoramic x-ray produces a similar amount of radiation as to what an individual will be exposed to during a flight from Melbourne to Sydney.

In summary, x-rays are a very important part of the orthodontic treatment journey and are essential prior to, during, and following orthodontic treatment.

Newborns typically sleep around 16 hours out of 24, conserving energy and allowing for the Active Sleep state, which wires the enormous human brain in advance of each stage of physical and intellectual development.

Humans produce a unique milk which supports this rapid brain growth, unlike many mammals who need to produce young with strong muscles and bones to allow them to keep up with a moving herd.

Most healthy, full-term, newborn babies double their birth weight around four months and triple it around their first birthday. By contrast, a baby cow will double their birth weight in around 60 days!

At birth, your new baby is basically a bundle of reflexes, instincts, basic bodily functions and a very immature brain! The range of vision at birth is around 30cm, just enough to clearly see their mother’s face from the breast or resting on her chest. They can’t always coordinate their eyes together to focus so can sometimes look cross-eyed but they should get the hang of it by around 3 months.

Your newborn has immature hearing which responds best to that annoying high pitch we all seem to use when speaking to them! They recognise sounds which are familiar from the womb, like the voice of their mother and others regularly speaking around her. Their sense of taste is very basic at this stage; they can recognise sweetness, which is all they really need as breastmilk is very sweet! And their sense of smell is developed enough to recognise the scent of their own amniotic fluid on their mother’s skin and the smell of her colostrum and breastmilk. Its like a really basic model, enough to get them through the

The development of the central nervous system works from the top down. Your baby’s first intentional movements will be lifting their own head and being able to track moving objects with their eyes. Newborns are fascinated by faces and can hold eye contact with others for surprisingly long periods. Their sense of touch is heightened in the areas around the mouth, the palms of their hands and soles of their feet. Skinto-skin contact is not a passive activity for the baby; their brain is processing

The baby’s experience of touch makes a significant leap after the first few weeks of life. As the central nervous system continues development, babies begin

to gain control of the arms and hands. They progress from being touched by the people and surfaces they come into contact with, to being someone who touches. The feedback they get from accidentally touching things with their hands drives them to gradually develop the ability to hold and release, to guide and intentionally move things. Around six months, these skills become practical as they learn to pick up food in the hand and bring it to their mouth. They will practice and develop these skills by holding simple toys, first grasping them when placed into their hand and later grabbing them when placed in reach.

The initial language of a newborn is very basic: unintentional grunts and sounds and crying. Crying is a broad form of communication which has the sole purpose of signalling to the mother they are needed to provide care. Very experienced parents might be able to associate certain cries with particular needs and some midwives claim they can identify boys from girls by their newborn cries, but mostly crying simply increases in urgency the longer the delay. And that can be increments of seconds, not minutes.

Hearing development becomes more refined as the brain develops. Your baby may become still when a new or unexpected sound captures their attention as they try to identify the direction from which it comes. By around 4 months, they can turn their head in the direction of a new sound. Babies seem to enjoy some sounds more than others, including the type of white noise they find soothing. Around six weeks, your baby might smile when you speak to them, as they continue to learn what makes You you!

Although your baby is many months away from intentional mobility, they are still capable of accidental movement. For this reason, it is never safe to leave a baby unattended on any surface higher than the floor. By three months, you are probably going to see first attempts at leg movements; uncoordinated, clumsy movements which will become what we call kicking. The nervous system has a lot of work ahead before crawling, standing and walking are possible and the foundations are beginning the installation. Complex movements will be needed in the second half-year and rolling them out will require significant development. Sleep disruption in the second six months and beyond can be directly related to mobility progression. Be prepared!

Tummy time is promoted as being important in avoiding flat head syndrome, formally known as plagiocephaly. This is particularly of concern in babies who regularly spend long periods “contained” in car seats, baby bouncers, swings and other equipment designed to hold babies when parents cannot. Initially, newborns will retain the foetal-like position when laid on their tummy and many babies do not enjoy the experience. There is no evidence than tummy time must be practiced on the floor, despite parents being told this is the case. Lying tummy down on

an awake adult’s chest encourages raising the head and eye contact, engaging the baby far better than a playmat and propped toy. By three months, your baby will be raising their upper body by taking their body weight on outstretched arms, having progressed through stages of gradually extending their reach. Babywearing is an excellent way to engage the same muscles as tummy time for babies who dislike it.

A healthy, full-term, breastfed infant receives the exact nutrition required for optimal brain development. Parents can provide the stimulation and environment to support the baby during the incredible evolution we see in this first three months of life. Society needs to support parents as they experience this intense period of nurturing.

In 2014, Yvette established the Southern Natural Parenting Network, incorporating South Eastern Babywearing Group. DAY OUT FOR PARENTS ON THE

PENINSULA

Peninsula VineHop Festival is back this November with its unbeatable lively atmosphere – and a perfect opportunity for a fun and memorable day out for Peninsula parents.

Set across seven stunning Mornington Peninsula venues on Saturday 30 November, VineHop 2024 will showcase around 35 local craft beverage brands – including craft beer, cider, spirits, wine and seltzer.

Phaedrus Estate returns to the VineHop family in 2024, and joins Mock Red Hill, Pig & Whistle @ Bayview Estate, Hickinbotham of Dromana, Festival Hub @ The Briars, Dromana Estate and Stumpy Gully as one of seven VineHop venues.

The festival is all about celebrating the incredible cool-climate wines, craft beer, seltzers, cider and spirits produced by the dynamic and award-winning craft beverage industry of the Mornington Peninsula.

Alongside tastings of a variety of crafts drinks, each venue hosts a range of food trucks to keep hungry bellies satisfied, and DJs and live music will keep the festival vibes high throughout the day.

This year, the Festival Hub @ The Briars will be the biggest yet, with 17 craft drink bars, plus more food trucks and more tickets available than previous years. The Festival Hub will also host world-renowned local DJ John Course on the main stage from 4pm to 7pm.

Due to popular demand, both the North Shuttle and South Shuttle will visit the Festival Hub @ The Briars ensuring no-one misses out on this epic venue.

Festival-goes can choose between a range of ticket options to play the day their way.

Shuttle tickets include access to four venues on a hop-on-hop-off bus.

• The North Shuttle will visit the Dromana Estate, Stumpy Gully, Phaedrus Estate and the Festival Hub @ The Briars.

• The South Shuttle will visit Mock Red Hill, Pig & Whistle @ Bayview Estate, Hickinbotham of Dromana and the Festival Hub @ The Briars. Festival Hub @ The Briars tickets are great for visiting one venue only and getting a true taste of the festival. The Festival Hub is the largest VineHop venue, in terms of size, number of bars, number of food trucks and number of tickets available. It’s an unbeatable atmosphere!

Private Bus and GA tickets are for those wanting a more personalised experience. Create your own itinerary and visit any of the seven VineHop venues on your own schedule. These tickets are the ideal option for larger groups, including end-of-year celebrations, hen days and milestone birthdays.

VineHop has proven to be a popular day out for locals on the Peninsula for years, providing a unique event for parents to step away from the daily routine and prioritise time with friends and family, without their kids.

Lisa MacGregor, a local Mt Eliza mum of two and the founder of VineHop, said “I’m a parent and I know the genuine need for a day off! A day to socialise with adults and to party, a day to look forward to – it’s part of the reason why I created VineHop, and I love seeing fellow parents letting their hair down and enjoy the day.”

So, get your friends together, book your tickets and start looking forward to an epic day out at VineHop 2024!

WILSONS PROM WHALE CRUISES

Wilsons Promontory National Park, known as "The Prom," is an unspoiled wilderness in southeastern Victoria, Australia, marking the mainland's southernmost point. Its coastal waters, part of Victoria's largest marine protected area, offer a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including seabirds, fur seals, dolphins, and migratory whales. During spring, whales returning from breeding grounds in Queensland and New South Wales can be seen in these waters.

To experience these majestic creatures, Wildlife Coast Cruises offers a 6-hour Wilsons Promontory Whale Cruise, departing at 10:30 am from Port Welshpool. The knowledgeable crew expertly scans the waters for whales, providing guests with valuable whale-watching insights. Humpback whales, often with their calves, are the stars of the show, with occasional sightings of Southern Right Whales.

The cruise also includes morning tea, lunch, and opportunities to spot other marine life, such as seals, dolphins, and seabirds. This is a unique chance to witness whales in Victoria. For more details, contact Wildlife Coast Cruises.

The Road to Good Health

It’s a common theme that we hear from our beautiful community that prior to adopting a low carb real food eating style, they experienced persistent tiredness and pain in their joints for no apparent reason. By simply eliminating wheat, gluten, inflammatory seed oils and ultra-processed foods from their diets, many have reported remarkable improvements. Often within a few short weeks, joint pains vanish and energy levels soar to heights not felt in years.

The good news is that making the swap to a healthier lifestyle is simpler than you might think.

Here’s a few good ways to start:

1.

Scrutinize Labels – read ingredient labels carefully especially products with claims like ‘low sugar’ or ‘low carb’. Avoid hidden sugars - often disguised with words like ‘fruit concentrate’, ‘evaporated juice’ or dextrose. Also watch out for wheat, gluten, starches, emulsifiers, seed oils and artificial additives as these can contribute to inflammation in the body. Check out our website blog for more detailed lists of ingredients.

2. Embrace Wholefoods – prioritise quality protein, above ground vegetables and healthy fats as the foundation of your meals.

3.

Cook at home – explore our collection of easy, nutritious recipes featured here and on our website – they’re not only faster than takeaway but also leave you feeling energised and satisfied. Slow cooked meats or hearty roasts paired with seasonal vegetables are perfect choices accompanied by our easy to make wraps and bread rolls.

4. Educate yourself – dive into reputable sources of nutrition research to gain insights into preventing chronic diseases. Our website blog features a list of Health Professionals who stay up to date with latest research. Plus you can reach out to us with any questions you have and we’ll direct you to reliable sources of information.

The journey to improving your health doesn’t have to be hard. Our range of cakes, bread rolls, wraps and breakfast options are designed to make your life easier. Plus if you’re aware of the traps and seek out products which support good health then you’re taking the first steps towards a more vibrant and energetic you!

New product alert !

There’s some new additions to our online store - Lakanto sugar-free icing powder for delicious cupcake icing plus Maxwell & Williams mugs, perfect for your healthy mug cakes!

With a background as a food writer and cookbook author, Linda Martinucci overhauled her eating style in 2017 when her husband David was diagnosed pre-diabetic. By making a few simple changes to their eating style - reducing carbs and increasing healthy fats – they both felt better and had more energy than they had in decades. David reversed his diagnosis within a few short months and all inflammatory joint aches and pains disappeared. Unable to find easy alternatives to their favourite foods which were free from inflammatory and artificial ingredients, they created a range themselves. Their mission is to help others experience the joys of good health by providing convenient easy alternatives which are full of good nutrition and health benefits.

*As always seek the advice of a qualified health professional before making significant changes to your diet (see our website for resources).

TACO DAY

Lettuce taco 'bout Taco Day. It's on October 4 and that gives you the perfect excuse to spend the entire day eating tacos. A traditional Mexican version of the sandwich, a taco is a tortilla stuffed with filling. Usually made of corn or wheat, the tortilla can be filled with beef, chicken, vegetables, pork or seafood and served with cheese, cilantro or onions as garnish.

Did You Know…

…that in 18th century Mexico, tacos referred to pieces of paper that Mexican miners wrapped around gunpowder to make holes in mines?

CAPS LOCK DAY

On most keyboards, caps lock is a button or key that when set forces all letters to be in uppercase. Using all caps in an electronic communication is generally associated with anger and yelling. The mode can be easily switched off by pressing the caps lock key again.

Did You Know…

…that according to some studies, the three most used keys on a computer keyboard are the delete key, the key for letter e and the space bar?

Spring Days tocelebrate

MINIATURE GOLF DAY

An offshoot of golf, miniature golf is a leisure sport that focuses on putting on artificial turf amongst various obstacles. Invented in Scotland in the late 19th century to allow women to play golf, it was unseemly for women to use a full sized golf club, so the Ladies' Putting Club of St. Andrews decided to miniaturise the sport.

Did You Know…

…that miniature golf is sometimes also known as crazy golf?

BUY NOTHING DAY

The unofficial holiday makes a statement against the consumerism that takes over the country on Black Friday. The day was created in order to raise awareness about the effects of consumerism on society, the economy and the environment.

Did You Know…

…that contrary to popular belief Black Friday is not the busiest shopping day? That distinction goes to the Saturday before Christmas.
