Welcome to the autumn edition of Peninsula Kids magazine.
It’s time for long summer days to give way to the cooler air of March, April and May. Whether you’re embracing the seasonal changes from the side of a footy oval, or from the heights of the Arthurs Seat Eagle, this is the time of year where the Mornington Peninsula captivates with vibrant sunsets, and landscapes covered with leafy reds, oranges, and golds. Be sure to get out and explore the unique beauty that autumn brings to our coveted corner of Australia.
In this issue, we explore theatre outings, stepparenting, creativity, and our usual health, recipe, and education features. Check out the delicious recipes by Simply Swap Foods on pages 44-48. The no-bake choc berry bars look yummy and easy enough for little hands to create with little help. Celebrating Easter and decorating eggs? We’ve found a wholesome way to colour your eggs with items you probably already have at home. And my, my, they are gorgeous!
Also gorgeous were the colouring competition entries we received from the summer edition. We loved your frogs playing mini golf! Congrats to our winner, Rose. She and her family will head over to Boneo Discovery Park for a great day out!

There’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s face light up with wonder at a live theatre performance. Frankston Arts Centre believes theatre should be a joyful and welcoming experience for everyone - especially families with young children. That’s why they offer inclusive shows, including Relaxed Performances designed with kids in mind.
“Relaxed performances are an incredible way for families to enjoy live theatre together—often for the first time!” explains Cath Hedge, Team Leader Programming & Engagement.
“You’ll experience a specially adapted show in a comfortable, supportive environment. These performances are ideal for children, especially those sensitive to bright lights, loud sounds, or new settings.”
During a Relaxed Performance, house lights remain dim, volume is softened, and audiences can come and go as needed. A designated chill-out space is available for breaks.
“There are many ways audiences show their enjoyment,” says Cath. “Some might clap or sing along, while others rock, sway, or take a little walk. Some kids feel more comfortable with headphones or a screen, just peeking at the stage occasionally.”
“At a Relaxed Performance, there’s no ‘right’ way to experience the show,” she adds. “Everyone can enjoy it in their own way.”
Though designed to support individuals with Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, and sensory sensitivities, Relaxed Performances offer a laid-back theatre experience any family can enjoy. They’re ideal for parents introducing babies or energetic toddlers to live theatre in a flexible setting.
Parent of three, Sophie, shares, "I initially thought Relaxed Performances were only for families with special needs, but the Box Office reassured me they’re for everyone. It was a relief to be in a space where a vocal audience was expected—I wasn’t constantly shushing my kids!"
A traditional theatre setting can feel overwhelming, so Frankston Arts Centre makes thoughtful adjustments to ensure a relaxed atmosphere.
"When a child has sensory sensitivities or anxiety in busy places, it affects the whole family," says Cath Hedge. "It’s heartbreaking when a child is excited for an event but has to leave early due to loud noises, queues, or bright lights."
"That’s why Relaxed Performances are so important. They create a welcoming space where families can enjoy live theatre together without stress. Parents don’t have to worry about keeping their kids perfectly still and quiet, and children can engage in a way that suits them—whether moving around, making noise, or simply soaking up the magic at their own pace."
At Frankston Arts Centre, accessibility is a core part of their mission. Staff and audience members at a Relaxed Performance are just that –relaxed!
Every theatre season, they ensure there is at least one Relaxed Performance. They work closely with producers, directors, and performers to make sure these adaptations enhance the experience without taking away from the magic of the show.
“For my family, and others with children with additional needs, familiarity and preparation is important when going on an outing,” explains local Mum, Bec.
"Frankston Arts Centre has a great social story available on their website with pictures that help families know what to expect, from the foyer to the theatre and how things will unfold," says Bec. "We often do ‘drive by’ visits to new places before an outing, casually pointing out the building and entrance to make the experience feel less daunting. I also like to pre-book aisle seats, just in case we need to step out for a break."
This season’s Relaxed Performance is Mario the Maker Magician, dubbed “the best kids’ magician in the world,” on Wednesday, 24 September at 10:30 am. Full of fun, laughter, and interactive magic, this show is perfect for kids aged five and up.
From Peppa Pig to Madagascar the Musical, Victorian Opera, beautiful puppetry, world-class circus performances, and more— there’s something for everyone at Frankston Arts Centre in 2025! Explore the full range of shows online at thefac.com.au and plan your next theatre trip today.

Atool for all ages, you can use a journal to be creative, set personal and career goals, reduce stress, process emotions and track patterns of behaviour. By getting your thoughts out of your head and down on paper, you can gain insights about yourself that you might not otherwise see; insights that get lost in your head with all of the other thoughts and worries. It allows you to identify and challenge your core beliefs and thought patterns making it a valuable resource for stress management, career development and self-discovery for kids, teens, and adults.
Try to journal daily. You can write, draw, use point form, doodle, or write at length; whatever suits you at the time. The idea is to use your journal as a brain dump and get those thoughts out of your head and onto the paper. Once released to the paper, our written thoughts take on a different energy and meaning, turning into actions and goals, self-awareness, insight, and inspiration.
To get started, put the date and time on the top of the page so you can track any patterns that may emerge over the weeks and months. e.g.: You might see that every Tuesday you or your child are feeling particularly sad or every Wednesday night your child is having nightmares. Once identified, these patterns can be addressed and suitable management strategies discussed and implemented.
See below for a comprehensive list of 35 journaling prompts to help inspire and motivate.

Anew research paper published in the Journal of Social Philosophy advocates for greater social and legal recognition of stepparent-stepchild relationships, arguing they can hold the same significance as a child’s relationship with their biological or adoptive parents.
Social scripts tell us that stepparents are not real parents, even if they do all the things a biological parent would do. As a result, stepparents are often overlooked in both social and legal contexts, leaving them and the children they care for in vulnerable positions if the romantic relationship with the biological or adoptive parent ends.
Although many stepparents are active partners in creating the loving conditions for a stepchild to succeed, from providing care and support to taking on the financial costs of education and healthcare, they are seldom afforded the same social status as biological or adoptive parents. Social norms constantly tell us that stepparent families are less conducive to children flourishing, whether that’s because of the view that the family is broken, or the widespread misconception that a stepparent-stepchild relationship can fracture the child's relationship with their biological parents.
The stepparent is then one of the people preparing children's breakfast in the morning, checking that they have done their homework, taking them to a playground or for a family walk, or just being there to listen and comfort them. The stepparent is also making sure their stepchildren can access whatever health care they may need, or that they are receiving the moral education necessary to function later in life.
The stepparent then typically cares, educates, and makes sacrifices for his or her or their stepchild. And, depending on the relationship, the stepparent may also make important decisions (in conjunction with the other parents) about the receipt of medical treatment, the type of schooling, engagement with high-risk leisure activities, and so on and so forth. One child summarizes the status of her stepparent well: “Our stepdad is like our second dad; he's been in our lives almost our entire life, and I consider him my dad. Both my dad and him, they're both my dads”.
The stepparent-stepchild relationship is often seen as secondary to the partnership between the stepparent and biological parent. Consequently, it’s socially accepted that the bond will end if the romantic relationship dissolves. This oversight can result in significant trauma for a child. For many children, the end of a stepparent-stepchild relationship can be a significant source of pain, grief, and trauma. Psychology experts and testimonials from stepparent-stepchild families tell us that it’s not only children, but stepparents too who suffer devastation from being prevented from continuing a relationship with their stepchild.
Acknowledging the evidence that confirms stepparents play a valuable role in children’s lives is the first step to resolving the unfair and unvalidated prejudice towards stepparenting.
In Australia, legal protections for the stepparent-stepchild relationship can be ambiguous unless adoption takes place. This potentially makes it difficult for the stepparent-stepchild relationship to survive if the romantic relationship breaks up or the biological parent passes away.
When a stepparent-stepchild relationship holds moral parity with a biological relationship, it can be argued that stepparents are moral parents and should be granted the same legal rights and pathways as a biological parent when it comes to being considered for shared custody.
A moral parent understands that the parent-child relationship is valuable, and that it enriches their life significantly. Unlike someone who merely performs parental duties out of obligation to a partner, a moral parent actively participates in the child's life, making sacrifices and taking on responsibilities to advance the child's interests. This dedication and authority in the child's life reflects a deep, independent bond that doesn’t waver with the end of the romantic relationship.
Reframing how we view stepparent-child relationships and accepting the concept of multiple moral parents can lead to more supportive legal frameworks for children.
Society's conception of parenthood needs to evolve to include stepparents as moral parents. Then, courts and legal frameworks will be in a better position to consider the best interests of children by maintaining their relationships with all moral parents, moving beyond outdated biases against stepparents.
It is true that even when existing parents act responsibly, children might have several stepparents in their lives, and some of the romantic relationships between existing parents and stepparents might end after the threshold that leads to moral parenthood has been crossed, leaving the child with a few additional moral parents than they would have had if the biological or adoptive parent showed more constraint in the pursuit of love. But why bemoan this fact? If children end up with (say) five
Thestepparent-stepchild relationshipisoften seenassecondary tothepartnership betweenthe stepparent andbiological parent
adults who care deeply about them, and are in the business of creating the conditions for their lives to go well, why should we be troubled? In the same way that an adult can have (say) five children and be a wonderful parent to all of them, children can have five parents and have a strong bond with each one of them. Once we stop seeing children as the property of their parents and start seeing them as beings with equal and independent moral status, we will be less troubled by the prospect of multiple moral parents, and children can receive the stability and care they need to thrive. We might even come to realise that multiple parents are the ideal, not the dysfunctional model it has been positioned to be.

It is no secret that one of our most precious resources in Australia is water. It stands to reason then that anything we can do to reduce water usage is the first place to start when looking for ways to make our homes greener.
It seems the only way is up with electricity bills. Looking for ways to decrease energy use in our homes is great for the environment but great for your budget too. We all know that turning lights off and switching appliances off at the wall switch are a good idea, but there are also some simple things we can do while renovating too.
If you are about to embark on a home renovation project, you have the perfect opportunity to start living a greener life. With some smart choices you can plan a green home renovation that saves money in future costs AND reduces your impact on the environment. The three mantras to living a more sustainable life are reduce, reuse and recycle. The easiest way to achieve a green home renovation on a budget is to focus on the first mantra – reduce.
USE LESS ENERGY = LOWER ELECTRICITY BILLS
So how can we achieve a greener home renovation by reducing water and energy use without busting the renovation budget?
You can try taking shorter showers, but for many of us long showers are a hard habit to break. The best way to reduce water usage in the shower to simply restrict the water flow.
You can completely replace your showerhead with a new watersaving showerhead. Or you can install a flow restrictor onto your existing showerhead. This will slow the flow of water and is the cheapest and easiest option.
Replace old taps – especially if they are leaky - around the home with new taps that restrict the water flow. A great low-cost alternative to replacement is to screw on aerators to the end of each tap. This is a simple DIY project that will reduce flow rate while aerating the water and decrease your daily water usage.
Did you know that the humble old-fashioned dunny is flushing away 10 to 12 litres of precious water at a time? Older toilets only have a single-flush button, whereas modern toilets have a dual-flush system which greatly reduces water wastage. A light flush with a modern toilet can use as little as 3 litres and a ‘number 2’ flush around 6 litres. A new toilet could save tens of thousands of litres of water per year. Keeping old fixtures such as the old dunny no longer make sense economically or environmentally.
An essential part of many home renovations is an overhaul of the electrical system to bring it in line with modern safety standards (always get a licenced professional in). Install LED lighting at the same time and get rid of all of your old traditional light bulbs. LED lights have a slightly higher purchase price, but this is offset by the benefits they deliver over time. Benefits are reduced energy usage and lower maintenance and replacement cost due to their longer lifecycle compared to traditional light bulbs.
Choose appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and freezers with a high energy rating.
These can significantly reduce your daily household energy use. The whitegoods market is competitive and you should have no trouble finding an affordable appliance that also has a high energy rating. With washing machines and dishwashers, look for those that also have a high water rating.
Reduced energy use lowers our carbon footprint and ultimately helps each of us to play a small part in protecting the future of our planet.
There are stacks of other ways to make your home renovation greener and this is an area that homeowners are increasingly showing more interest. Many of us now realise that green initiatives not only reduce our impact on the environment by also deliver great ongoing cost savings.

Getting salty
This nocturnal ninja measures the size of a ruler and is known for curling its arms to mimic seaweed. It also likes living in super-salty environments that others can’t handle. That means less competition when you’re looking for places to live and plenty more food to go around. It’s a great strategy, especially if you don’t like sharing. It’s nickname is a nautical nod to the raised skin or ‘keel’ around the edge of its body.
An octopus in disguise
Although they may not look like it, argonauts are a species of octopus. Females make beautiful paperthin shells using two special arms. It’s not your traditional shell, it's better. It's one part house, one part nursery and one part hotair balloon. It’s a clever piece of underwater architecture that keeps her afloat, saves her energy and protects her and her babies. These shells can sometimes be found washed up on the beach.
Heavyweight champion
This giant octopus grows up to 3m across from arm-tip to arm tip and weighs over 10kg, making it the largest octopus not only locally but in Australian waters. It has a massive appetite and loves all sorts of seafood. If they see food they want to eat it, including each other. Mothers have even been known to eat their own eggs. Before you freak out, don’t worry, she’s only eating sick eggs to protect the rest of her babies.

The Mornington Peninsula is home to all sorts of colourful and fascinating residents. But there’s a particular group that few have seen or know about. It’s a secret group that boasts weird and wonderful body designs that defy nature. Arms that taste, tongues with teeth and bodies with no bones.
Simply head to your local beach, rock platform, pier and even underwater to explore the magical world of octopuses. These ocean oddities are unlike anything in the animal kingdom. With three hearts, blue blood and the ability to move around using jet power they need to be seen to be believed.
But here’s a tip; they’re masters of hide 'n seek. So you need a keen eye to find these marine magicians who can change the texture of their skin, shape shift and change colour quicker than you can blink. They’re full of surprises including the ability to shoot ink out their rear ends to escape trouble!
Dive in to find out more.
Octopuses are the ultimate underwater escape artists, they can camouflage into their surroundings and their boneless bodies allow them to squeeze into impossibly small spaces. If you want to spot one, head to your local rockpool or grab a mask and snorkel and look around the local piers. If you’re feeling adventurous, take an underwater torch and explore the shallows at night. Look for telltale signs like scattered shells (a sign of their dinner) or cleverly camouflaged arms.
Tips for what to do (and NOT do!) when you see an octopus:
•DO watch from a distance. They’re shy but fascinating!
•DO respect their homes. Don’t poke around or disturb their habitat.
•DON’T pick up a blue-ringed octopus. They’re venomous and they don’t want to be your friend!
Dive Deeper into the World of Octopuses
Check out my new book,Octopuses - Underwater Wonders. It’s packed with even more octopus facts, fun stories, and amazing photos from weird and wonderful octopus species from around the world.
Bury your head in the sand
This orange long-armed octopus doesn’t have the ability to change a range of colours like most other octopuses. So when it needs to make a quick escape it blasts sand out from the seafloor to build an underground hideout. Two arms poke out of the sand like snorkels so they can breathe and mucus binds the sand grains together to reinforce the walls. This makes the hide-out as strong and gross as possible. It was the first known species of octopus to dig burrows.
Not all heroes wear capes, but if these guys did it would be made from a plastic bag. They reuse our litter, even old bottles and cans, which are excellent hiding places and homes. Not only that, but scientists can use them to measure pollution levels in our oceans. These octopuses aren’t the lone ranger when it comes to loving trash. There are over 24 different species of octopus which use our rubbish.
This golf ball-sized octopus is considered one of the deadliest in the world, and its scariest weapon is venomous saliva which it injects into its prey. Electric blue rings flash as a warning. Look but don’t touch. But don’t worry—it’s not interested in you, unless you’re a tasty crab. The venom is also found in its tissues, gills and organs, so they’re poisonous AND venomous. The young are venomous as soon as they hatch from their egg.

If you asked Mount Martha author, Rebecca Fraser, to describe her writing style in one word, she’d answer, “Versatile.” From copy and content writing to professional editorial services, the selfdescribed ‘writer and moonlighter’ wordsmithed her way through many word wrangling day jobs in order to hold space for her true passion: fiction.
While Rebecca wrote fiction from an early age it wasn’t until 2007, when she signed a contract for her first pro-paying story, that she felt the time was right to commit to what has always felt like her true calling.
From there, Rebecca’s stories continued to gain attention, earning publication in numerous anthologies, journals and magazines in Australia and internationally. A collection of her short fiction Coralesque was released in 2021. Her fiction and poetry for adults has earned her multiple awards and nominations, including the Aurealis Awards and Australian Shadows Awards for her speculative works. On a local level, she was the winner of the inaugural Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor’s Writing Awards, followed by an honourable mention and shortlisting in subsequent years. She was also thrilled to win Farrells Bookshop’s national writing competition with her story, Yelah.
But it’s never been about awards for Rebecca. Her driving force is telling the types of stories she loves to read. It’s this impetus that saw her make a transition into children’s fiction. “When my son was born, I was really inspired to write the sort of books I loved to read as a kid,” says Rebecca. “I’ve always had eclectic taste, enjoying everything from fantasy, horror and sci-fi through to contemporary, literary, and historical fiction. The time felt right to write the tales percolating in my head with a young readership firmly in mind.”
To date, this versatility has served Rebecca well in her children’s books. Her first novel, an urban fantasy adventure Curtis Creed and the Lore of the Ocean (IFWG Publishing) was released in 2018, followed by Sea Glass (Wombat Books) in 2023. Sea Glass, a gentle contemporary Australian story about the bond between an eleven-year-old girl and her estranged grandfather forged through a shared passion for sea glass, went on to be shortlisted for the 2023 Reading’s Children’s Prize and longlisted for Adaptable: Turning Page to Screen, where authors have the opportunity to pitch their work to film makers and TV producers.
Another fantasy adventure Jonty’s Unicorn (IFWG Publishing) was added to Rebecca’s list of middle grade fiction in 2024, and 2025 is shaping up to be another busy year as two more of Rebecca’s books make their way into schools, bookstores, and libraries…and the hands of young readers. Skippy Blackfeet, an emotionally-rewarding tale of friendship, trust, bravery, belonging, and family, told through the point of view of a stray black cat, will appeal to anyone who has ever questioned their place in the world. “I really fell in love with the characters I created in Skippy Blackfeet,” says Rebecca. “I wanted this book to represent the glorious diversity that enriches and defines modern Australian families and lifestyles.”
Rebecca has earned a reputation as a writer who doesn’t shy away from big issues and themes in children’s books, and this continues with her forthcoming release, a young adult story, Flip. Slated for a September release, Flip forms part of Rhiza Edge’s new list of novellas specifically tailored for busy teens or reluctant readers. Each book has an easy-to-follow standalone story based on topics, struggles, and interests teens face today.
“The issues and themes flowing through Flip feel timely and relevant,” says Rebecca. “They tap into the current housing crisis, as well as bullying, loss and grief, friendship and family dynamics, starting over in a new town and school, and the impacts of cancer and dementia. There’s a whole lot going on for sixteen-year-old protagonist, Denim Davies, but ultimately his story ends in hope and empowerment.”
As Rebecca continues her writing career on her beloved Mornington Peninsula, she ultimately hopes to empower other writers, both young and old, at every stage of their career. As a creative writing workshop facilitator, mentor, Author Pen Pals participant, author ‘in conversation’ host, panelist at literary festivals, judge of literary competitions, and sponsor of the national youth writing competition Little Stories Big Ideas, she donates a lot of time and resources to the writing community, but wouldn’t have it any other way. As Rebecca says, “Writing is a solitary pursuit as far as the ‘writing’ goes, so being an active part of the literary community is important to me. To borrow a quote from Michelle Obama: For every door that’s been opened to me, I try to open my door to others.”

Soft skills, also known as core skills, common skills, power skills, or essential skills, are now recognised as essential abilities for success in the professional world. In contrast to hard skills, which are specific to particular professions or industries, soft skills are versatile and applicable across all areas of work.
Examples of soft skills include communication, time management, teamwork, accountability, creativity, decision-making, problemsolving, goal setting, and work ethic. While we naturally acquire more skills with time and experience, there is a foundational set that is essential as young adults transition from school to the working world.
Accumulating soft skills is a lifelong journey that starts from birth and has many influences. These skills are acquired indirectly as we interact with our family and progress through the educational system. They are impacted through modeling behaviours of adults and peers, exploring the world we live in, through our educational experiences and more. We should be seeking to help children build interpersonal skills with siblings, cousins, neighbours, friends, community members and classmates, while also helping them develop analytical thinking and problem solving through puzzles, brain games and other activities.
During the upheaval of COVID-19, many of us pushed our existing soft skills to new levels to navigate the unfolding challenges of the global pandemic. These included selfmotivation, adaptability, trust-building, and nonverbal communication. As we approach the five-year mark since the start of the pandemic, we now know how our interpersonal skills had to evolve in response to the uncertainty. Young minds were just as impacted by these developments.
It’s clear employers have put a strong emphasis on soft skills. Looking at a review by CSIRO of more than 12 million job advertisements published post-COVID, the research revealed that job postings allowing for remote work were 1.2 times more likely to emphasise the importance of interpersonal skills compared to those for inperson positions – pointing a spotlight on the value of these new and adaptable abilities.
Parents can help develop communication skills through encouraging open dialogue and creating an environment where children feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings, as well as actively listening. This should begin at a very early age and can be strengthened by allowing children to have some decision-making opportunities. Let kids plan a game night, decide which of the Peninsula’s park to visit, plan a day out in the Melbourne CBD or create an itinerary for an upcoming family holiday. Help kids develop problem-solving skills by asking open-ended questions and letting them navigate a map.
It is important to note that it is not as much about acquiring skills as it is helping children and young adults improve them. Soft skills are a spectrum where everyone has a differing level of motivation – the trick is to improve that level. The primary soft skill could arguably be 'curiosity'– the healthy search for knowledge. It is in this place that you will help your children to pick up and develop the soft or human skills they need to function at an optimum level. After all, there is nothing 'soft' about these amazing skills.

As a Peloton Instructor teaching members across the globe, movement is at the core of my life.
But even more than that, as a mum, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful fitness can be in bringing a family together. It’s not just about staying physically active; it’s about connection, setting an example, and creating lifelong habits that benefit both body and mind.
Like many parents, I juggle a lot; work, school drop-offs, extracurriculars, and just the everyday chaos of raising two daughters, Eden Grace (10) and Emery Faith (8, going on 18!). Some days, it feels like there aren’t enough hours to get everything done, let alone fit in a workout. But, over time, I’ve realised that making fitness a family affair isn’t about carving out extra time; it’s about weaving movement into the life we already have.
KEEPING
Fitness has always been my anchor. It came into my life during a challenging time when I was struggling with infertility, and it became my escape, my healing, and eventually my purpose. Now, it’s something I share with my daughters, not just as an Instructor, but as a mum who understands how transformative movement can be.
Keeping kids active isn’t just about physical health; it’s about mental wellbeing, too. One of my daughters has ADHD, and we’ve found that movement and mindfulness help her regulate emotions in a way that nothing else does. Whether it’s a quick run or a calming meditation, that time together is so important for her, and for me, as a parent, to see how fitness can empower her.
But more than anything, I’ve learned that kids do what they see. My daughters watch me make movement a priority, and because of that, they’ve made it a part of their lives too. They want to be as strong as Mum. They see fitness as fun, not as a chore. And that, to me, is everything.
Let’s be real—getting the whole family to agree on anything, let alone fitness, can be tough. Some days, my daughters want to do a Disney Yoga Flow while I’m squeezing in an interval run on the Peloton Tread. And that’s okay! Fitness doesn’t have to mean everyone doing the exact same workout. It’s about creating an environment where movement is a natural, expected part of your routine.
One of the biggest barriers is time. Between school, work, and sports, it’s easy to feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day. My advice? Make it a non-negotiable. In our house, Saturday mornings mean fitness time together—it’s just part of the routine now. Some weeks, that might be a big workout session. Other weeks, it might be something as simple as a 10-minute walk after dinner. Life happens. Plans shift. But if movement is a priority, you’ll always find a way to fit it in, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
For those whose kids aren’t naturally drawn to fitness, find their connection point. One of my daughters is obsessed with basketball, so we’ve built fitness into her training—whether it’s working on her endurance or doing quick sprints to help her last longer on the court. My girls are also huge Taylor Swift fans, so putting on a Peloton Artist Series class and letting them dance their way through a workout makes it feel like a party, not a chore.
If you’re looking for easy ways to get the whole family moving, here are a few things that have worked for us:
Movement after meals: A quick walk after dinner is an easy habit to build, and letting your kids choose the music makes it even more fun.
Incorporate their interests: Whether it’s basketball drills, dance parties, or obstacle courses, find what lights them up and make movement feel like play.
Mindfulness moments: Fitness isn’t just about the body—it’s about the mind, too. Family meditation or stretching together can help kids feel calm, safe, and confident.
Beyond the physical benefits, staying active as a family strengthens your bond. It’s time spent together, away from screens and distractions. It teaches kids resilience, self-care, and the importance of prioritising their health. And maybe most importantly, it gives them permission to take care of themselves—something we, as parents, sometimes forget to do for ourselves.
At the end of the day, there’s no perfect formula. Some weeks, we’re nailing it. Other weeks, life throws a stomach bug our way and the plan goes out the window. That’s okay. The goal isn’t perfection - it’s consistency, grace, and showing our kids that movement is a gift, not a punishment.
Fitness saved me when I needed it most. Now, it’s my joy to share that with my daughters. However you choose to do it, I hope you can find a way to make movement a part of your family’s life, too. Because when you move together, you grow together.

Are my teen's mood swings normal?
Mood swings are a normal part of the teenage years and puberty. To support your teen through mood swings, try to:
•Keep calm and tell them you want to understand their feelings
•Give them space to process their feelings
•Help your child problem solve, but don't try to fix their problems for them
•It's also impor tant to keep track of your child's emotions. This is because long periods of mood -changes may be a sign of something more serious, such as a mental health issue
What is perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the stage of life leading up to your last menstrual period. During this stage you may have some of the symptoms of menopause. Perimenopause ends one year after your last period — this is known as menopause. The next life stage is known as post-menopause. Perimenopause usually starts in your 40s. On average, perimenopause lasts 4 to 6 years. However, it can last from 1 to 10 years.
Can I give ibuprofen
You can use ibuprofen for mild to moderate pain and fever in babies over three months of age. You should not give ibuprofen to your child if they have asthma or a bleeding disorder. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
How much ibuprofen you can give to your child will depend on their age and weight. You should always follow the dosing information on the pack. You can give your child ibuprofen every 6 to 8 hours, but no more than three times a day. If your child needs to take ibuprofen for more than 48 hours, see a doctor.
Can I give paracetamol and ibuprofen to my child at the same time?
Before you give your child a combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen, you are recommended to give them either the recommended dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen first. If this doesn’t keep the pain or fever controlled, you can give your child paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time. You can also alternate between the two medicines. Make sure you do not exceed the limit of each medicine you can give your child in 24 hours. To avoid giving your child too much of either medicine, always note down what time you give each dose of paracetamol and ibuprofen.

My son is in grade 5 and there are two other children in his class with braces. Is this too early to place braces on the teeth?
Orthodontists see patients across a wide age range – from children to adults. The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that children visit a registered specialist orthodontist for an assessment between the ages 7-10 years old. This will allow the orthodontist to perform a comprehensive assessment of your child’s dental development and determine whether early treatment is necessary or not.
There are many orthodontic problems that can be managed at 8-9 years old that will provide a meaningful benefit to the child; but there are also problems that are delayed until most of the adult teeth have appeared in the mouth. In general, the goals of ‘early’ orthodontic treatment include:
• Preventing trauma to the teeth and gums
• Improving function and/or self-esteem
• Reducing the complexity of future orthodontic treatment
Braces placed on a child around 8-9 years old are usually “sectional braces” that are placed only on several teeth, rather than “full braces” commonly seen in teenagers or adults that are placed on all the teeth. Other appliances an orthodontist may use in this age group are fixed expansion appliances or removable “plates” that are used to treat early orthodontic problems.
Another benefit of an early assessment is to allow the orthodontist to determine if the adult teeth are developing normally and whether they are in the correct position. Often there are interventions that can be done before all the adult teeth come through to avoid adult teeth growing in the wrong position or direction and/or growing into an adjacent tooth.
In conclusion, early orthodontic treatment can be beneficial for your child in the right cases. An assessment by your orthodontist will help to guide you on whether intervention is required at an early age, or whether it is better to wait until they are older with more adult teeth present.

One of the most common questions I hear from well-meaning friends, family, and customers at markets is, "If you're not eating bread, pasta or anything sweet, what do you actually eat then?" It's a question that always makes me smile because the answer is simple: real food. But it shows just how far we've drifted from understanding what nourishing our bodies truly means.
When people think about making healthier choices, they often imagine restrictive diets, complicated meal plans, or giving up their favourite foods. But real food eating isn’t a "diet" – it's an eating style that aligns with how our bodies are designed to function. It's about choosing foods that come from nature, not from factories.
When you embrace real food, you’ll notice a big difference in how often you feel hungry. Real, whole foods are naturally more satiating, meaning you'll feel fuller for longer. Many people find that they can comfortably go with just two or three meals a day without needing to snack constantly. By nourishing your body with nutrient- dense foods, you’ll be surprised at how much less you need to eat to feel satisfied. However please be aware that when you first transition off a standard high carb/sugar eating style, you might experience what’s commonly referred to as "keto flu" as your body shifts from burning sugar to burning fat. If this happens, keep pushing through—it will pass after a few days and you won’t believe how amazing you’ll feel on the other side.
All those ultra-processed foods lining the middle aisles of the supermarket don’t support good health. They're designed to be addictive and packed with additives, sugars and unhealthy fats that contribute to inflammation in our bodies. Over time, these foods can leave us feeling tired, sick, and struggling with chronic health issues particularly as we age.
Our products are recommended by these leading Healthcare Professionals:
We focus on prioritising protein through sources like grass-fed meats, freerange chicken, eggs, and sustainably caught fish. We eat healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and coconut oil then choose from a wide range of vegetables like leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower and also include low-sugar fruits like berries.
We started our business to provide wholefood alternatives for people wanting to embrace a real food eating style to improve their health. With our products, you don’t have to sacrifice the foods you love. You can easily enjoy cakes, bread rolls, wraps, pancakes and porridge made with one of our low-carb real food mixes and stay true to a lifestyle that supports your health and well-being. That’s why so many Doctors and Health Professionals love recommending our products to their clients!
Real food eating isn’t complicated. It’s about going back to basics— quality proteins, healthy fats, fresh vegetables and natural ingredients. It’s a simple, sustainable way to nourish your body and feel your best at any age.
So, when someone asks "What do you actually eat then?" you can smile and say, "Real food—it’s delicious and I've never felt better."
With a background as a food writer and cookbook author, Linda Martinucci overhauled her eating style in 2017 when her husband David was diagnosed pre-diabetic. By making a few simple changes to their eating style - reducing carbs and increasing healthy fats – they both felt better and had more energy than they had in decades. David reversed his diagnosis within a few short months and all inflammatory joint aches and pains disappeared. Unable to find easy alternatives to their favourite foods which were free from inflammatory and artificial ingredients, they created a range themselves. Their mission is to help others experience the joys of good health by providing convenient easy alternatives which are full of good nutrition and health benefits.

March 10 was chosen by fans of the popular game as the date for this holiday because March 10 when abbreviated and written without a space between the month and date – Mar10 – looks like the word Mario. Mario is one of the most recognisable video game characters in the world. Celebrate by playing the iconic game and maybe also dress up like Mario for the day?
Did You Know… …that when Mario made his first gaming appearance as Jumpman, he was not a plumber as many thought, but a carpenter?

WARS DAY
The date for this unofficial fun holiday comes from the oftenquoted phrase within the Star Wars universe, "May the force be with you". Surgical delivery of babies has evolved from a last chance attempt to save mother and child to common practice in less than a century. In 2021, 38% of all women giving birth in Australia had a caesarean section.
Most parents facing a surgical delivery of their baby would prefer a natural vaginal birth. Despite the media, very few elective (planned) caesareans are because of the preferences of the parents or doctors. Quite simply, nobody undertakes major abdominal surgery unless medically indicated.
Emergency caesareans are a topic for another day. Here we are looking at births which are planned in advance due to known risks. Some of these include:
• Issues with the position of the baby and/ or placenta:
• Breech (backwards) or transverse (sideways) presentation
• Placenta previa (some or all of the placenta is positioned on or close to the cervix)
• Multiple births (twins or more!)
• Previous caesarean sections
• Medical conditions or infections of mother or baby
Planned (elective caesareans) are booked for babies who have reached “term”, with evidence showing that closer to the due date is preferable. Around 39 weeks gestation is ideal for healthy pregnancies.
Most parents begin their pregnancy with plans for a natural birthing experience in a gentle and supportive birthing space. Being told this is no longer possible can be devastating. The loss of an anticipated
experience is real, even though everyone recognises the optimal health of mother and baby matters most. It's okay to grieve.
Planning for a surgical birth experience can be an important part of processing this grief. Here are some things to consider:
While routine for medical professionals, childbirth is a rare event for parents. Fortunately, modern practices are shifting away from unnecessary separation of mother and baby. When planning a C-section, it's appropriate to communicate preferences like immediate skin-to-skin contact.
Immediate and uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact is recognised for its benefits to both mother and baby. Far from being just a nice thing if it can happen, skin-to-skin helps regulate the newborn temperature, stimulates important steps leading to initiating the first breastfeed and supports the uterus to contract naturally after the placenta is removed, reducing bleeding.
In a review of 13 studies from around the world, researchers found that skin-to-skin care after caesarean has a positive impact across cultures and across healthcare settings.
Although there may be short-term effects, such as a slight delay in your milk supply increasing, the way your baby is born generally doesn’t make a difference to how well you can breastfeed.
• Hold your baby in the underarm or football position with their feet towards your back.
• Place a pillow on your lap to suppor t your baby and shield your wound.
• Lie down on your side.
• A laid-back position with your baby slightly off to one side.
• In ever y position, make sure your baby's body is close to you, chest to chest, chin to breast, and nose away from the breast.
Whatever position you find most comfortable, the basics of positioning and attachment for your baby still apply. You will probably find you need help to get your baby in the right spot - some mums are hesitant to keep calling for busy midwives to attend every feed but in the long run this will help you learn. It can also be helpful for your partner or support people to learn how to help you with this, so they can be with you when staff are unavailable.
You can also ask if there is an IBCLC lactation consultant available to help you.
It is beneficial for both you and your baby to have immediate skinto-skin contact and for your baby to breastfeed within the first hour of birth. However, there are occasions when breastfeeding may be delayed. Factors such as receiving general anaesthesia or the need for your baby to be placed in a humidicrib for stabilization can necessitate a wait. In such situations, expressing colostrum is crucial.
Colostrum, your very first breastmilk, is rich in concentrated protein and immunity factors compared to mature breastmilk. It works as a natural laxative for your baby's first poo, known as meconium. A midwife can help you hand express your colostrum within the first hour after birth or as soon as you are stable. As well as collecting this important first milk for your baby, this will stimulate your milk supply and signal to your breasts to begin production. If you are unavailable to directly feed your baby at the breast, they can be given your colostrum by syringe
In recent years, expressing colostrum in late pregnancy and freezing it has become popular. While generally only advised for known risks of baby needing supplementary feeds in the first few days (eg: babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes), many people choose to store colostrum "just in case". If expressing antenatally is comfortable for you, you are at least 36+ weeks pregnant and you have been given the all-clear by your midwife or doctor, then go for it! Be aware that the variations between mothers in the amount they can express at this stage varies and averages just a few millilitres. Again, this is not an indicator of your milk supply. If expressing colostrum is stressful or frustrating, don't feel you must continue. Your milk will be there when your baby feeds and/or your midwife will help you express postnatally if needed.
Research has shown that mothers who have planned caesarean births without experiencing natural labour are more likely to experience a delay in milk production compared to those who have unplanned caesarean births after going into labour. All caesarean deliveries are associated with a higher likelihood of delayed onset of lactation compared to vaginal births.
When you are booking in for your surgery and again when you are admitted to hospital, discuss your plans to breastfeed and how you would like any delay to be managed. If you have expressed colostrum antenatally, make sure you have it with you on admittance, it is clearly labelled and that everyone caring for your baby knows where it is stored. Your partner or support person can take responsibility for this and - if you or your baby need to be transferred to a different facility, for example - make sure it stays with your baby and isn’t overlooked.
Keep your baby close - skin-to-skin is optimal - and offer the breast frequently. This is especially important on the second, third and fourth day. The baby stimulates your milk production by feeding almost constantly. You might need extra support on those days, with someone to reassure you and give practical help like nappy changing, soothing your unsettled baby while you eat or use the bathroom, and passing you the baby to feed. If your baby is sleepy following drugs used in labour and delivery, you should be supported to hand express your colostrum frequently. Little and often will trigger your supply in the same way a newborn cluster feeds. If needed, you can feed this concentrated milk to your baby by cup or syringe. Once your milk begins to transition to mature milk, you can begin using a breast pump if needed.
Rest is crucial for all new mothers, especially for those who have undergone a caesarean birth. Breastfeeding is a good reason to relax and take the time to recover. Since a caesarean birth is a significant abdominal surgery, it can lead to a slower regain of energy compared to those who have had a vaginal birth. It is important to give your body the necessary time to heal. Refrain from lifting anything heavier than your baby for a minimum of 6 weeks or until after your postnatal check-up.
It is normal to feel frustrated by your restricted movement, abdominal pain and discomfort and fatigue. You might be tempted to have others feed your baby with a bottle so you can sleep or catch up on household tasks. Keep in mind that breastfeeding helps you rest and heal, with hormones doing a lot in the background. Try to prioritise rest and breastfeeding and let others step up for everything else. If you have other children, are parenting alone or do not have family support, you might need to seek help from your community or outsource some things to commercial services.
Recovering from surgery, adjusting to life with a new baby and establishing breastfeeding can be a lot to deal with. Having a different birth experience to one you might have expected can also take its toll, as you grieve a lost experience. It's normal to feel a bit overwhelmed by it all and it can help to talk to someone who you trust about everything which has happened. Family, friends, your child health nurse or a counsellor can help you work through your feelings and process it all.

It’s their idea! It’s their art!
Children can only fully express themselves, when the usual contrived expectations, judgements and criticisms are removed from their art. Confident, independent and happy children will then emerge from this exciting world of creative arts.

The Story: Benjamin Banjo Frog has a problem. His little pond has dried up so he must find some water to stay alive. He thinks of someone who could help him - his Grandad - who lives in the Frog Pond at the local Zoo. Surely Grandad will save him!
This delightful story uses the Phonics approach for learning to read. All the carefully selected words can be spelt out letter by letter, making learning to read easy because there are no tricky letter groups that confuse and discourage beginners.
Benjamin Banjo Frog is an easily decodable text that fits in with the necessary Foundational Skills: pronouncing basic words properly; acquiring phonemic awareness (as students can say the letters they see); and being able to blend those letters and sounds to form meaningful words, enabling beginners to become successful selfreliant readers.
Benjamin Banjo Frog is recommended as a beginnerreader's confidence booster, and will be available through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing soon!

Summer is here, and there's no better way to keep kids safer and build confidence in the water than with regular swimming lessons! At Paul Sadler Swimland Carrum Downs, we focus on more than just teaching kids to swim – we equip them with essential water survival skills. From learning how to float and tread water to mastering safe entry and exit techniques, our lessons are designed to build skills that last a lifetime. With consistent practice, children not only improve their swimming abilities but also develop critical safety habits. With a focus on survival skills in our classes, swimmers learn essential life-saving skills, like treading water as well as how to manage deep water. We spend 10 minutes of every 30-minute class in deep water until swimmers can tread water unaided for 2 minutes. Plus, swimming is a great way for kids to stay active, improve coordination, and have fun with friends! Make this summer safer and more enjoyable by investing in swimming lessons at Paul Sadler Swimland Carrum Downs.
Imagine waking up to the cheerful clucking of hens as they greet the day, their vibrant presence adding a touch of rustic charm to your backyard. If this idyllic scene resonates with you, then Talking Hens, a family-run business nestled in the heart of Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula, is your go-to destination for bringing this dream to life.
Jason Nethercott and Giuliana Postregna, the passionate owners of Talking Hens, have been providing families with the knowledge and resources to embark on the rewarding journey of backyard chicken ownership. Their story began back in 2012 with a free-range egg farm in Keysborough, where their interest in backyard hens was ignited. As their business grew, Jason and Giuliana realised the joy they could bring to others by sharing their experience and knowledge for backyard hens. They transitioned their focus to providing families with everything they need to welcome these feathered friends into their homes.
Talking Hens is not just a place to purchase hens; it's a haven for education and guidance. With a wealth of experience spanning over four decades, Giuliana's father, an egg farmer of over 40 yrs, was the founder of the quality and nutrient rich chicken feed mix.
Talking Hens are committed to educating and parting their knowledge onto both current and new chicken owners . They conduct informative talks, workshops, and create engaging videos, arming their customers with the necessary expertise to care for their hens responsibly and reap the bountiful rewards they offer.
Among the various breeds available at Talking Hens, the Hy-Line Brown laying hens have emerged as a popular choice for suburban backyards. These delightful hens are renowned for their child-friendly nature, gentle demeanor, and are regular egg layers.
Customers of Talking Hens often recount them with heartwarming tales of their feathered companions, from cheeky hens eating dog food to surprise kitchen visits through cat flaps. These endearing creatures reinforce the special bond that develops between humans and their backyard hens.
Embarking on the adventure of backyard chicken ownership is a decision that will enrich your life in countless ways. The fresh, nutritious eggs, the therapeutic effect they have, and the invaluable lessons they impart to children make it a truly rewarding experience. Talking Hens warmly invites you to step into their world of backyard hens and discover the joy, companionship, and sustainability that these remarkable creatures bring.
