8 Is Praising Our Kids Good or Bad?

Parents, relatives and teachers say these phrases and mean them positively. They may use it when a child puts on their shoes when asked, when they draw something interesting, or get a maths question correct. But this kind of language may not always be healthy or helpful.

12 New Year, Same You?

Building emotional resilience can help you approach this busy season with grace—and maybe even find moments of peace.

17 The Dangers of Using Adult Skin Care Products on Children

All skin care is not the same and it certainly should not be used on children unless it is specifically formulated for younger skin. The consequences of putting anti-ageing skin cream on a child go well beyond potential allergic reactions. Products designed for older skin can cause significant long-term damage to a child's skin.

20 Setting Family Financial Goals for 2025

Let’s face it, the 'new year, new you' mantra doesn’t just apply to gym memberships and wardrobe reorganising; it’s prime time to get those family finances whipped into shape too.

22 Frequency Therapy

Frequency therapy is now easily accessible that detects potential health issues before they manifest physically, enabling earlier intervention for better healing. Imagine knowing your child’s needs before discomfort arises!

PIS praising our kids GOOD OR BAD?

arents say 'good girl or 'good boy' all the time. Here’s why you should try and say something else.

Parents, relatives and teachers say these phrases and mean them positively. They may use it when a child puts on their shoes when asked, when they draw something interesting, or get a maths question correct. But this kind of language may not always be healthy or helpful. One issue is it doesn’t actually give children clear feedback on what they just did or said. What could you say instead?

PRAISE AND PARENTING

Praise has been seen as a key part of raising children for decades. In the 1950s, influential US psychologist B.F. Skinner believed rewards, including praise, positively reinforce desired behaviours. In the 1970s, amid rising interest in self-esteem, psychologists and other child development experts emphasised the importance of praising children. But since the 2000s, psychology research has moved away from seeing self-esteem, and hence praise, as central to a child’s wellbeing.

Early childhood education has similarly shifted towards children having a positive sense of identity instead. This means children having a sense of safety, belonging and capability, rather than a strong opinion of themselves. Nevertheless, praise is still frequently mentioned in popular advice to parents.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF PRAISE

Some psychology researchers have defined praise as either informational (telling children about their strengths and actions) or evaluative (telling children whether or not they are good enough). In a similar vein, US psychologist Carol Dweck categorises praise as “person praise” or “process praise”.

Person praise focuses on stable characteristics such as personality or appearance. Process praise focuses on behaviours or effort directed towards achieving an outcome, such as learning to ride a bike or a baby taking first steps. Research has found person praise can decrease young children’s motivation to challenge themselves and lead to feelings of helplessness if they fail.

In contrast, a long-term study of children whose mothers used process praise showed these children were more likely to be confident in preschool and later in primary school.

Process praise is informational, giving children feedback on their efforts and strategies in achieving an outcome (“I can see by your puffing how hard you ran in that race”). Person praise tends to be evaluative, often where there is little possibility for change, or only after success (“What a winner!”).

SEEKING APPROVAL OR SEEKING IMPROVEMENT?

More broadly, constant praise may mean children unconsciously feel they are doing things for adult approval, rather than for themselves. This can work against the development of self-regulation and a healthy sense of identity. Adults who over-praise (particularly evaluative or person-focused praise) may assume children need external rewards to do the right thing. This doesn’t enable children to make good choices on their own.

Recent research suggests inflated praise, using words such as “incredible”, “amazing” and “wonderful”, can foster narcissistic traits by causing children to have an unrealistic sense of their own competence. This can lead children to become upset or angry at failure, partly because they perceive their worth to be conditional on meeting adults’ standards. So, counterintuitively, inflated praise can lower self-esteem.

THE GENDER QUESTION

“Good girl/boy” also raises other issues around gender identity and self-esteem. Research involving adults found men are more likely to see praise as informational (reflecting their competence) whereas women are more likely to see praise as evaluative (implying their need to conform to set ways of behaving).

Studies of children that compared boys’ and girls’ responses to praise also found girls tended to respond more negatively to evaluative praise. While some of this research is decades old and done in the United States, it is interesting to think about why this might be, and whether it relates to how we socialise children into gender roles. What kind of unconscious messages are we communicating through our praise?

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS BE DOING INSTEAD?

Three principles can support a healthy approach to praising kids:

1. Give children realistic feedback about their behaviour or actions. For example, “Well done. I can see you’re trying there with your kicks” as opposed to “Amazing kicking! You’re a superstar!”

2. Focus on children’s own learning or improvement rather than on competing with others For example, “Next time, when you play that piece, how about trying it faster?” rather than “That wasn’t as quick as Sophia can play it”.

3. Use praise that shows children they are valued regardless of what they may or may not do. For example, “Well done! I know you studied every day for this test” as opposed to “You’re Dad’s straight-A angel!”

These approaches all support confidence, empathy and resilience in children; qualities we all need in our complex world.

New Year, Same You? BUILD EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE NOW!

The holiday season brings together joy, chaos, and an overwhelming pressure to do everything right. It’s a time of connection and exhaustion, especially for women who often bear the brunt of holiday planning, childcare, and emotional labour. From managing kids on school breaks to navigating the emotional weight of family traditions and New Year’s resolutions, it’s easy to feel stretched thin. Building emotional resilience can help you approach this busy season with graceand maybe even find moments of peace. Here’s how:

KIDS, CHAOS, AND CHRISTMAS BREAK

When the school term ends, your house transforms from a quiet workspace into a mini circus. Kids at home over the holidays bring joy but also noise, mess, and relentless energy. It’s easy to feel like you’re failing if you can’t keep up with their demands, but here’s the truth: you don’t have to. Reframe your perspective. Instead of seeing the chaos as a problem, consider it a “rough road.” These moments, though challenging, are opportunities to connect with your kids and create lasting memories. If they’re bored, frustrated, or fighting, step back. Ask yourself: does this situation require me to fix it, or is this just part of their learning and growth?

Introduce structured downtime. Create small rituals—like a daily holiday movie or a family walk—that help the whole household reset. Most importantly, give yourself permission to step away when you need it. Taking a moment to breathe isn’t selfish; it’s essential for your well-being.

THE CHRISTMAS CRUNCH

The weeks leading up to Christmas often feel like a marathon. Between shopping for gifts, attending school events, decorating, and juggling family expectations, the pressure to create a “perfect holiday” can be overwhelming. But perfection is a myth; chasing it will only leave you drained. Embrace the idea that the “rough road” is part of the journey.

Plans may go awry—the turkey might burn, the gifts might not arrive on time—but these bumps are often where the most memorable moments are born. Instead of focusing on perfection, focus on connection. Ask yourself: am I doing this because it brings joy to my family or because I feel like I should? If it’s the latter, let it go.

It’s also okay to delegate. Get your partner or kids involved in holiday tasks, even if it means the tree isn’t decorated precisely the way you’d like. The time saved is far more valuable than a perfectly trimmed tree. And remember, saying “no” to extra obligations is a gift you can give yourself.

THE PRESSURE OF A NEW YEAR

As the calendar flips, we often feel compelled to reinvent ourselves. New Year’s resolutions can be a source of inspiration, but they can also carry the weight of past failures. That pressure to change—and the fear of failing again—can make January feel more daunting than exciting. Try shifting your mindset. Instead of treating the New Year as a deadline for drastic changes, view it as a checkpoint. Ask yourself: what do I want to explore this year? This approach takes the pressure off and invites curiosity.

For instance, rather than saying, “I’ll lose 10 kilos by March,” say, “I want to explore ways to feel healthier and more energised.” This softer approach creates room for growth without the harsh self-criticism that can derail your efforts. Remember, resilience is built not by avoiding failure but by adapting when things are unplanned.

BREAKING FREE FROM EMOTIONAL LOOPS

The holidays amplify emotions, from joy and excitement to frustration and disappointment. It’s easy to get stuck in emotional cycles, where minor stressors—like a crowded shopping mall or a last-minute schedule change—trigger outsized reactions.

Recognising these patterns is the first step to breaking free. When you feel overwhelmed, pause and name the emotion. Are you frustrated, anxious, or tired? Once you’ve identified it, ask yourself: what do I need right now? Maybe it’s a quiet moment, a snack, or simply permission to feel your feelings without judgment.

You can also reframe your emotions as opportunities. If your patience is tested by long lines or traffic, consider it a chance to practice staying calm. A simple shift in perspective—like saying, “This is improving my resilience”—can help you regain control and keep the situation from spiralling.

RESPONDING WITH CHOICE

The holidays will throw challenges your way: family conflicts, unrealistic expectations, or the inevitable mishaps. However, how you respond to these situations is entirely up to you. When a situation feels out of control, remind yourself that you have choices. Instead of reacting with frustration when the kids spill juice on the freshly cleaned floor, pause, breathe, and respond calmly. Shifting your language can help, too. Instead of saying, “This always happens to me,” try saying, “This is frustrating, but I can handle it.”

Focusing on what you can control—your reactions—you’ll feel more empowered and less overwhelmed. And when others try to pull you into their emotional storms, remember: it’s not your job to steer their ship. Your role is to stay steady at your helm.

The holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. By embracing the rough roads, breaking free from emotional cycles, and responding with choice, you can create an authentic and fulfilling season. Prioritise your well-being alongside your family’s joy. You deserve to feel as much peace and happiness as you work hard to create for everyone else.

The dangers of using adult skin care products on children

All skin care is not the same and it certainly should not be used on children unless it is specifically formulated for younger skin. Skin care designed for older skin with anti-ageing ingredients is the last type of product a parent should be putting on a child's skin. The consequences of putting anti-ageing skin cream on a child go well beyond potential allergic reactions. Products designed for older skin can cause significant long-term damage to a child's skin.

Using anti-ageing skin care products on children's skin can be dangerous for a number of reasons. There is a good reason why children below the age of 15 have been banned from buying antiageing skin cream in Sweden. Those under the age of 15 will now need a parent to buy products which include exfoliating ingredients.

POTENT ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

Anti-ageing products often contain powerful active ingredients such as retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), peptides and antioxidants. These ingredients are formulated to penetrate deeply and stimulate cell turnover, which can be too harsh for children's delicate and sensitive skin, leading to irritation, redness, peeling and even burns and severe reactions that can have a life-long impact on the skin.

SENSITIVITY AND IRRITATION

Children's skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult skin. The strong ingredients in anti-ageing products can cause adverse reactions such as contact dermatitis, allergic reactions and increased skin sensitivity. Children's skin lacks the resilience to handle these potent compounds safely.

continued next page...

HORMONAL DISRUPTORS

Some anti-ageing products contain ingredients that act as endocrine disruptors; for example certain preservatives such as parabens and chemicals including phthalates. These substances can interfere with hormone function and potentially disrupt the natural hormonal development of children. While this may sound extreme, the sad reality is that many mass produced commercial grade skin care products contain chemicals that should not even be used on adult skin let alone children's skin.

FRAGRANCES AND PRESERVATIVES

Anti-ageing skincare often includes synthetic fragrances and preservatives that can cause allergic reactions, rashes or dermatitis in children. Since children's skin barrier is not fully developed, it is more prone to react negatively to these additives.

PH IMBALANCE

Children's skin has a different pH balance compared to adult skin. Anti-ageing products are formulated for adult skin pH levels and can disrupt the natural pH balance of children's skin, causing dryness, irritation and other dermatological issues.

UNNECESSARY EXPOSURE TO CHEMICALS

The primary function of anti-ageing products is to address signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines and age spots, which are irrelevant to children. Applying these products to children exposes them to unnecessary chemicals that offer no benefit and could potentially cause harm.

LONG TERM HEALTH RISKS

The long-term effects of using anti-ageing products on children's skin are not well studied. Prolonged exposure to these potent ingredients could lead to unforeseen health issues or skin problems as the child grows older. Products manufactured overseas in countries with less regulated safety environments are particularly problematic. Some even contain harmful ingredients like 'bleach'.

INAPPROPRIATE USE

Anti-ageing products are specifically designed for adult skin concerns. Using them on children is not only unnecessary but also inappropriate, as children require skincare products that cater to their unique needs, which are generally milder and free from harsh chemicals.

Children's skin requires gentle and appropriate care that suits its delicate nature. It is crucial to use products formulated specifically for children to ensure their skin remains healthy and protected from potential harm.

SETTING FAMILY FINANCIAL GOALS FOR 2025

Let’s face it, the 'new year, new you' mantra doesn’t just apply to gym memberships and wardrobe reorganising; it’s prime time to get those family finances whipped into shape too.

So, how about giving 2025 a big, warm welcome with some rocksolid money goals?

Here’s a no-nonsense guide to setting family financial goals.

1

GIVE YOUR FINANCES A CHECK-UP

Start by knowing where you’re at. It might not be pretty, but it’s crucial.

Gather all your bills and bank statements. What’s coming in? What’s going out? Are there any surprise expenses lurking around the corner?

A financial health check-up will help set the scene for goals that are realistic—and actually achievable!

DREAM BIG (BUT BE REALISTIC)

Alright, now it’s time to decide what you want to save for.

Keep it simple. Think about short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals. Maybe you want to save for a family holiday or a home deposit. Perhaps you'd like to pay down debt or start an investment portfolio. These goals don’t have to be fancy or overwhelming; just make sure they fit into your lifestyle and are easy enough to commit to.

START AN EMERGENCY FUND

We all know that life throws curveballs when you least expect it. (Hello, car breakdowns and lost teeth). That’s why an emergency fund should be non-negotiable.

Aim to tuck away three to six months’ worth of essential expenses for those “just-in-case” moments. You don’t want a broken washing machine eating up your holiday fund, right?

2 3 4

KEEP IT REAL WITH A FLEXIBLE BUDGET

When it comes to budgeting, think realistic, not restrictive. A budget that feels too tight can be hard to stick to, so make sure it aligns with your lifestyle and allows for a little flexibility.

Start by setting up a simple spreadsheet or explore online budgeting tools that make tracking expenses easy and visually clear. Remember, budgets aren’t set in stone; you can revisit and adjust them as needed. Aim for a budget that balances your financial goals with everyday life, so that it’s sustainable and keeps you motivated to stay on track.

AUTOMATE YOUR SAVINGS

Set it and forget it! The best way to stay consistent is to automate a portion of your income straight into savings. And no, not the account you dip into for coffee and movie tickets; put it somewhere out of reach, like a dedicated savings or high-interest account that doesn’t come with a tempting debit card attached.

MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR

Getting the whole family involved in saving makes financial goals more meaningful and achievable.

Consider setting a shared family goal, like saving for a holiday or a fun outing, and make it something everyone can look forward to.

Kids can also learn about money management through family discussions on budgeting and saving, helping them feel more connected to the goal.

By working toward something together, everyone can play a part, stay motivated, and appreciate the value of saving toward a meaningful reward.

CELEBRATE THE WINS

When you reach a financial milestone, celebrate in ways that don’t involve spending. For example, plan a fun family day at the beach or a nearby park, have a movie night at home with everyone’s favourite films, or enjoy a “no chores” day where everyone gets to relax. Small rewards like these make hitting your goals feel even better and keep everyone motivated for the next milestone. Celebrating nonmonetary wins can be just as enjoyable and reinforces the value of saving without impacting your budget.

This year, set the family up for success with these easy, manageable goals. It doesn’t have to be a year of extreme cutbacks; just a thoughtful approach to money that lets you enjoy life a little, keep some savings for security and start building the future you want. Here’s to a bright and financially secure 2025!

Therapy

The AO Scan program by Solex serves as an educational tool, communicating with the body via subtle bio-frequencies to identify imbalances. This proactive approach allows for lifestyle changes that can optimize health and achieve homeostasis.

There are many ways you and your family can experience the benefits of frequency therapy using the AO Scan technology. The simplest way is through the Inner-Voice scan which supports emotional health. Derived from the same technology as a lie detector test, the Inner Voice technology uses a sound harmonizing technique that generates a balancing audio frequency derived from your voice spectrum to diminish frequencies that are in excess and supplement frequencies that are lacking.

The associated report displays three notes or octaves that are out of balance, plus the main octave that is being suppressed, and generates pulse tones via MP3 files. These tones are unique to your energetic needs, incorporating radionics, binaural beats, and other frequencies to support the balance of their emotional and mental well-being. You listen to these therapeutic songs, called balancing harmonics with headphones multiple times a day for maximum benefit.

One of the primary benefits of the Inner-Voice is stress reduction. The balancing harmonics provided in the Inner-Voice can helps create a calming environment, soothing your child’s nervous system, and enhancing their ability to cope with daily challenges.

Other benefits include:

• Improved focus: Supports concentration, especially for kids with attention challenges.

• Better sleep: Encourages restorative sleep, leading to a better mood.

• Emotional regulation: leading to improved resilience and healthier responses to stress

• Self-awareness: Encourages understanding of their feelings

The AO Scan frequency therapy technology is non-invasive and provides a multifaceted approach to supporting children's mental, emotional, and physical health.

Sheila Knaggs

heila Knaggs was born in Liverpool, England, and spent her childhood growing up on the Isle of Man, a small, idyllic island in the middle of the Irish Sea, where it is still considered most unlucky to cross the fairy bridge without saying hello to the fairies. The island is steeped in fairy legend, so it’s not surprising that some of this has rubbed off on Sheila, whose debut children’s story, Fairy Beach, features some Aussie sand sprites of our very own.

Having moved to Melbourne as a teenager, Sheila immediately fell in love with Australia and all it has to offer. She has called the beautiful Mornington Peninsula home for the best part of three decades; she and her husband having raised their four, now grown, children here.

Sheila says she has always loved writing. Her adored grandad was a writer – he used to write for his local papers – so she likes to think she takes after him, and that perhaps he has played a small part in helping the stars align for her now.

When she was at school, she remembers at one point, wanting to be a journalist, so the intention was there, even back then. But she went on to choose a career in travel, instead.

In her late 20s, Sheila signed up for an online creative writing course which cost her an arm and a leg, only to waste her money; it just wasn’t the right time. And then, later, when her children were all at school, she began an editing course, which she was told she was excelling at. But, again, it was never completed. Life just kept getting in the way.

But for as long as she can remember, Sheila has written poetry, mostly from a place of empathy. She says writing a poem for someone who was grieving was, at times, the only way she knew how to help a loved one or friend get through a very sad time in their life. Over the years, her poems have been read at funerals and weddings, both here and overseas.

Sheila’s first success at being published came in the form of a 2000-word rhyming story, chosen for an anthology called Tales from the Pandemic, by Eastern Regional Libraries. This book has now been deposited with the National Library and is also on Trove. So, the story of her experience over this time is now saved for posterity.

But it was when Sheila began working at a local primary school supporting students with additional learning needs that she was inspired to start writing for children. A friend subsequently invited her to a children’s writing conference, and that was that! Her eyes were opened to a whole new world!

Sheila finally got her big break, literally, when she fractured her ankle at work and was forced to take a term off. She felt like the universe had given her a gift – the gift of time! She sat on the couch and completed a children’s creative writing course run by renowned Australian children’s author, Jen Storer. She then entered some of Jen’s writing competitions, and was thrilled when her stories were shortlisted, with two of her entries winning their categories. One of these stories was Fairy Beach which Melbourne publisher, Affirm Press, picked up, and has now published.

Sheila says the idea for Fairy Beach came about quite by accident. One day, during lockdown, she and her husband went down to the beach to take a walk. It was a blustery day and nobody else was around, but when she got out of the car, she could hear what sounded like giggling and chattering. It turns out a friend had accidentally pocket-dialled them and the noise was coming from the phone inside her pocket. So, as she walked along the beach that day, the idea morphed from pocket fairies to shy little sand sprites who hide in the sand dunes and play on our lovely beaches, once we have all gone home to sleep.

Sheila says she feels humbled by all the wonderful feedback Fairy Beach has received. Affirm Press did a wonderful job matching her with talented West Australian illustrator, Jennifer Falkner. This, combined with Sheila’s whimsical, soft and lyrical language, is what has given Fairy Beach its magical appeal.

It is truly a dream come true, says Sheila, who could not be happier with the outcome.

Sheila has a further two picture books in the pipeline with Affirm Press: one, all about the joys of camping, something close to her heart. And yes, you guessed it; the other, another beautiful fairy book!

Meanwhile, tread carefully along our precious beaches, and look out for Fairy Beach in all the best bookshops.

If you are successful, the next player goes, but if any balls drop, you must draw challenge cards equal to the number of balls dropped and do the challenge(s) on your next turn.Fuzzy fun for everyone!

School,s boring

...WHAT IT MEANS WHEN YOUR CHILD SAYS THEY’RE BORED IN CLASS, AND HOW YOU CAN HELP

Have you ever asked your child how school was today, only to be told it was “boring”? It’s a conversation sadly all-too-familiar to a lot of parents. Many are left wondering why and what they can do to help. It is important to understand why your child may be feeling bored at school. Here are some possibilities to consider.

NOT EVERY ASPECT OF SCHOOL IS ENGAGING

Boredom at school isn’t uncommon. Remember, a child’s learning journey is jagged, not linear. Their learning may progress quickly during some periods, and less so at other times. Sometimes they will be bored. Research has found Year 9 students reported feeling bored during nearly half of class time, on average, while younger students report feeling bored during about a third of class time. Our own research, which involved surveying 412 students in Year 10 about their emotions, revealed boredom was the most commonly reported emotion among participants. This is concerning because students need to be emotionally invested to learn well.

There’s a need for some teachers to develop more stimulating lesson plans and work more with students to find ways to motivate and engage them. Collecting feedback and working with their students to minimise classroom boredom could help some teachers. Young people are growing up in an era where – thanks to technology –boredom in spare time is rare. This can be quite challenging for

teachers, who generally want to encourage their students to reflect, ponder and contemplate. But research has found closer studentteacher relationships, creating safe and supportive classrooms, and linking learning to real-world contexts relevant to students can often mitigate negative emotions like boredom. The greater the control the student has over their learning – and the better they see the value of it – the more motivated they’re likely to be.

But lesson content is only part of the picture.

IS YOUR CHILD BORED SOME OR ALL OF THE TIME?

If your child is feeling bored in just one class, or one subject, then it could be the lesson content. But if your child is consistently complaining that all classes and all school is boring – and you’ve noticed their grades are declining – there may be more to consider, such as:

-the possibility of an underlying learning difficulty, such as dyslexia (which relates to reading) or dyscalculia (which relates to maths and numbers)

-the possibility of hearing or vision impairment

-the possibility your child is “gifted”, meaning they learn much faster than their peers.

If you suspect any of these, talk to your GP, and to your child’s teacher.

IS BOREDOM MASKING OTHER EMOTIONS?

When children say they are bored, they might be struggling to identify and express more complex feelings such as sadness or anxiety. It’s worth considering if there are friendship issues happening in the playground, or if there is something else going on emotionally for your child. These stressors can occupy your child’s thoughts in the classroom, taking attention away from learning.

By helping children to understand and articulate their emotions, we can provide them with the tools to manage these experiences more effectively. Some schools offer programs that help children identify their emotions and learn social, emotional and behavioural regulation skills. Children with good social emotional skills are likely to do better on a range of interpersonal and academic outcomes, which can also benefit parents, teachers and the school in general.

SO WHAT SHOULD PARENTS DO?

Talk openly with your child. Ask more specific questions about their day, instead of just “how was school?”. Instead, you can try questions like:

-What was the most interesting thing you learned at school today?

-Can you tell me about something you enjoyed doing at school today?

-Was there anything that made you feel frustrated or bored today?

-What do you wish you could change about your day?

-Who did you play with today?

-If you were the teacher for the day, what would you do differently?

-What feedback did you receive from your teacher on your work today?

Find out what they mean when they say they’re bored at school, and when they feel bored. Consider having them assessed for possible learning difficulties, and their eyes and ears checked. Find out if there are any problems with friends, or possible anxieties lurking below the surface.

If your child is particularly high achieving academically, discuss this with the school. Your child may be eligible for further assessment and extension support. Find ways to relate what your child is learning in school to their own lives and interests.

Consider how you can strengthen your child’s relationship with their teacher, and talk to the teacher, too. They might be able to make simple adjustments to support your child’s motivation and engagement.

Back to Basics

Kathleen Alleaume is a renowned nutritionist, author, and mum of three, acclaimed for her expertise in positive nutrition and wellness.

As a spokesperson for UNCLE TOBYS, she advocates for nutritious eating habits and offers practical advice on maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

(HOW TO NAIL A HEALTHY LUNCHBOX)

As a working mum and nutritionist, I know first hand how packing a lunchbox for your kids can be a bit of a balancing act. With so many factors to juggle - taste, nutrition, variety, and ages - it can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be.

Here are some top tips on how to create nutritious and appealing lunch boxes, fostering a positive home environment which will help your kids to make healthier food choices:

Get creative with presentation

Bento-style compartmentalised containers are a game-changer for picky eaters. They turn lunch into a colourful feast rather than a brown-bag bore, tempting even the most stubborn taste buds. The compartments act like a lunchbox map, helping you to include all the essential food groups: proteins, wholegrains, fruit and veggies, without any of them mingling into a flavour or mushy muddle.

2

Introduce more interactivity

Be brave and pack components that kids can assemble themselves. For instance, try UNCLE TOBYS LE SNAK Mini Crackers that they can mix with hummus or cheese. This not only makes lunch enjoyable but also helps develop fine motor skills and independence. You can also try packing DIY style kits such as whole grain tortillas, leftover shredded chicken, lettuce, cheese and salsa so they can assemble their own tacos. As your children get older, you can also inform them how eating healthily can be a game changer for them. Explain how balanced nutrition can help with energy levels and mood, help them to focus during study sessions, and give them the stamina they need for afterschool sports and activities. This way, they’ll see that making healthy choices can keep them at their best all day long.

Repurpose leftovers

4 3

One of my favourite go-to strategies is to leverage dinner leftovers. If we have a beef stir-fry for dinner, I’ll save a portion for the next day’s lunch. Adding a small container of rice and some fresh vegetables creates a balanced and delicious meal without extra effort. A great tip is to invest in some containers that will keep food warm for

hours, meaning leftovers are easy to reheat and your kids can have a nice warm packed lunch in school, especially in the winter months. This approach not only reduces food waste but also helps to save money.

Engage and involve

I’ve discovered that involving my kids in the lunch-packing process not only makes them more likely to eat what’s packed but also gives me a little break. We outsource the assembly tasks as much as possible the night before, which makes the morning rush much smoother. With a bit of guidance teenagers are also perfectly capable of packing their own lunches. Encourage them to prepare their own lunches, and get involved in the cooking, cleaning and packing up of leftovers. Not only does this give them a say in what goes into their lunchbox, but they’re also picking up valuable skills about meal preparation and learning to make healthy choices.

Stockpile their favourites

Kids love snacks, with children aged 2 - 14 eating an average of seven snacks per day*. So, in our house we’ve set up dedicated sections in both the pantry and fridge to keep things organised. Along with fresh fruit, yoghurt and protein-rich dips, non-perishable items like UNCLE TOBYS Muesli Bars are great, as they come in lots of flavours to help satisfy any snack cravings.

Kids also tend to snack more when they’re with their peers, with two in three kids and teens snacking occasions being in social environments, compared to one in three for adults*. So, by having these healthier options readily available, it makes it easier for them to grab nutritious snacks on the go.

Model behaviours

Kids notice everything, including what we eat. When they see us making balanced food choices and enjoying a variety of healthy meals, they’re more likely to do the same. This is true for teens, who are developing habits that will last a lifetime. By consistently preparing fresh meals and finding time to eat as a family, we can guide them to make better food choices on their own.

The Flexible Online Program Helping Young Students Thrive

In today’s competitive academic landscape, it’s crucial for children to find a learning path that challenges and engages them. Designed for students aged 8-10 years, Crimson Global Academy’s (CGA) Primary Program offers just that, providing young students with a unique, one-on-one online learning environment. Students benefit from engaging with a teacher who is not only a subject expert but also a dedicated Personalised Education Coach (PEC), focused on meeting each child’s unique needs.

“We noticed a remarkable change in our child’s enthusiasm for learning. The one-on-one attention and tailored approach have helped him engage and excel in ways we hadn’t seen before,” shares a parent from the Mornington Peninsula with a child in CGA’s Primary Program.

The CGA Primary Program is designed to offer flexibility, allowing students to progress at their own pace. Through one-on-one sessions, students can deepen their understanding of core subjects like English, Math, and Science, building a strong academic foundation tailored to streamline into international curricula.

Parents can witness their child’s progress in real time, celebrating milestones and fostering a supportive home learning environment. This close tracking helps ensure that each student is meeting their potential without the common distractions found in a traditional classroom setting.

By eliminating the daily commute, CGA’s online program offers families more quality time together and gives students greater freedom to explore interests outside of school. This balance between focused learning and flexibility provides an ideal environment for young learners to flourish academically and personally.

Other signs that anxiety has reached a concerning level are restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, sleep difficulties and muscle tension.

Very few kids can say they are anxious and many will either withdraw, become irritable or complain of feelings in their body such as headaches or tummy pain.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)

CBT is one of the main approaches we use to treat mental illness. While it isn’t always the best or only option, it is evidence-based and useful for you to understand so that you can explore what works for your child.

The first step in CBT is called ‘psychoeducation’. That might sound a little daunting, but it simply means giving the child and their carers a better understanding of what is happening to them from a scientific point of view.

The second aspect is symptom control. While this is different for

everyone, the general principles are helpful to understand. As we’ve discussed, anxiety is a triggering of nerves and hormones in our bodies that activates the fight or flight response. What we need to find out when a child has anxiety is what feelings they get when that system gets triggered and what helps to switch it off. Strategies such as deep breathing or muscle contractions and relaxations are really helpful ways to take control of the sensations that tell us we are anxious. With support, kids can become aware of these feelings from a very early age and learn to respond.

The third component of CBT is cognitive restructuring, which is developing new ways of thinking about the things that trigger anxiety in our kids.

The fourth aspect is exposure, where we gently guide children back into situations and environments that previously caused anxiety.

The fifth and final aspect is relapse prevention. One of the biggest risk factors of mental illness is a previous episode, which is why all children and adults who have experienced challenges with their mental health should be supported to proactively work to avoid future episodes, rather than simply breathing a sign of relief that it has resolved.

STRATEGIES FOR PARENTS

Helping ever yone in the family to learn about anxiety is a really great way to build mastery of our feelings, especially the difficult ones. Understanding what can trigger worry and fear and what happens in our body when these feelings happen helps to know when it’s present, but also shows kids it’s okay.

When children do become anxious, we must make sure we never dismiss it. Leaving a child to face their fears on their own will worsen those feelings, and risks that they won’t tell you about them in the future.

We should all be constantly learning what works best to help calm us in these tough moments. All children need guidance with this, and it is different for every child. Common approaches tap into calming down the alarm system in our body. Moving to less stimulating spaces helps to settle the alarm in many children, and activities like deep breathing help us to focus on our bodies and the present moment. This can be done from a young age.

KEY LESSONS

Feeling anxious is a common and helpful part of life, and all children will experience it to a certain degree. Like all emotions, experiencing anxiety during childhood is an opportunity for kids to be supported in learning how to deal with it.

Feeling anxious is a common and helpful part of life, and all children will experience it to a certain degree

Anxiety becomes concerning when it happens frequently and leads to difficulties functioning at home or school. Common triggers can be separating from a caregiver, social interactions and environments where judgement may occur (e.g., the classroom).

When children are showing excessive anxiety, it is important to support them to understand these feelings and how to manage them. It is different for each child, but management often involves a child learning and practising ways to settle their nervous system, such as deep breathing, tensing and relaxing muscles or listening to music.

What are skin tags?

Skin tags are growths that hang from your skin — your doctor might call them 'acrochordons'. They range from 1mm to 1cm and are made of collagen (a type of protein) and blood vessels surrounded by skin. They usually grow in the folds of the skin, where skin rubs together, such as, armpits, groin, anus, thighs, eyelids, neck or under the breasts.

Skin tags are common, especially as the person ages. They occur in approximately one in every two adults. They don't cause any harm, but if a skin tag is bothering you, you can talk to your doctor about having it removed.

What is Sever's disease?

Sever's disease, also known as 'calcaneal apophysitis', is a common cause of heel pain in children, first appearing when they are aged between 8 and 12 years. When your child has a growth spurt, the bones, muscles and tendons (which attach muscles to bones) grow and change rapidly. The area of growth in bones (called the growth plate) is weaker than normal bone and is more likely to be injured. The pain can come and go for months or even a few years. But it doesn't usually lead to any long-term problems.

Though diagnosing the cause of heel pain can sometimes be a challenge, your doctor or physiotherapist may recommend that your child does the following:

• Temporarily stops doing activities that cause the heel pain.

• Uses ice packs to reduce the pain or swelling.

• Does calf stretches daily. Your physiotherapist can show you how to do these.

• Wears gel heel pads or cushions in their shoes.

• Wears comfortable shoes with good heel lift or arch support.

My child has lost a baby tooth early and the dentist has recommended that she has a space maintainer. Why is this important?

A space maintainer is an appliance made to hold space for an adult tooth after the early loss of a baby tooth. Without the use of a space maintainer, the teeth that surround the open space can shift, impeding the permanent tooth’s eruption. Space maintainers can avoid more complex and costly orthodontic treatment in the future.

There are many types of space maintainers that can be custom designed by your orthodontist– they can be either removable or fixed. They may be designed to hold space for one tooth or multiple teeth. Space maintainers aim to guide the unerupted adult tooth into the correct position in the arch.

If space loss occurs, it usually takes place within the first six months after an extraction- therefore it is best to insert the space maintainer as soon as possible after the baby tooth has come out. Although not every child who loses a baby tooth early requires a space maintainer, a professional consultation with your dentist or orthodontist should be conducted to determine if a space maintainer is needed. The need for a space maintainer will be determined by the amount of space available, the child’s age and how long it will be before the adult tooth erupts.

In summary, x-rays are a very important part of the orthodontic treatment journey and are essential prior to, during, and following orthodontic treatment.

How much sleep does your baby actually need?

Top Tips for Understanding Your Baby's Unique Sleep Needs

As a gentle sleep coach for babies, I've seen countless parents struggle with baby sleep advice that doesn't seem to fit their child. From pregnancy onwards, parents are bombarded with advice around sleep routines focused on what I consider to be the biggest misconception in the world of baby sleep: that there is a one-size-fits-all sleep schedule for babies at certain ages. Many parents are told that following strict, age-appropriate awake times will result in a perfectly sleeping baby. If only it were that simple! The truth is that babies are individuals with varying needs and temperaments, which significantly impact their sleep patterns.

WHAT SCIENCE SAYS ABOUT BABY SLEEP NEEDS

In 2015, a panel of 18 specialists from leading organizations reviewed over 300 publications to update official sleep recommendations. Their findings, published in the Sleep Health Journal, provide average sleep durations for different age groups:

• Newborns: 14-17 hours in a 24-hour period

• 4-11 Months: 12-15 hours in a 24-hour period

• 1-2 years: 11-14 hours in a 24-hour period

• 3-5 years: 10-13 hours in a 24-hour period

Importantly, the panel noted that sleep needs could vary by up to two hours on either side of these averages. This means there can be up to an eight-hour variation in sleep needs within each age bracket!

Given this wide range of normal sleep needs, it's clear that a one-sizefits-all approach simply doesn't work. Trying to force your child into a prescribed schedule can lead to stress and overwhelm for parents, wasted time trying to settle a baby who isn’t tired and nighttime sleep issues like split nights, early rising or frequent waking.

I tell the parents that I work with that we can't force low sleep needs children to need more sleep, just as we can’t make high sleep needs children happy with less. Neither end of the spectrum is better than the other – sleep needs are just what they are for individual babies.

So where to from here? How do you determine your baby’s unique sleep needs? Here are my top tips:

1. TRACK YOUR BABY'S NATURAL RHYTHMS

Instead of following generic schedules, keep a basic sleep diary for a few days. The CuboAi Smart Baby Monitor can be incredibly helpful here, as it provides sleep reports without pushing generic awake time recommendations. This data can give you valuable insights into your baby's unique patterns.

12-15 HOURS

4-11 MONTHS OLD

Over a 24-hour period

11-14 HOURS

2. OBSERVE YOUR BABY'S MOOD

Are they happy and thriving with their current sleep patterns? If so, they're likely getting the sleep they need, even if it doesn't match a standard schedule. I also advise paying attention to how your baby wakes up, both from naps and during the night.

Do they wake really calm, content and seem 'wide awake', perhaps even taking a long time to resettle? This could be a clue they need a little more sleep pressure by reducing the duration of day sleeps or stretching to longer awake times.

Do they wake extremely upset and dysregulated? While this can be attributed to many things, one cause could be too much sleep pressure and supporting longer naps and shorter awake times may help!

3. UNDERSTAND THE SIGNS OF LOWER AND HIGHER SLEEP NEEDS

Your baby might have lower sleep needs if:

• Their sleep totals are on the low end of average

• They're happy and content during awake times

• They don't show tired cues and can stay awake longer than average between sleeps

• They sleep better at night with less daytime sleep

3-5 YEARS OLD

10-13 HOURS

Over a 24-hour period

1-2 YEARS OLD

Over a 24-hour period

For these babies, consider basing naps and bedtimes on their actual needs, not a generic schedule.

Experiment with more awake time or reduced day sleep.

On the flip side, your baby might need more sleep if:

• They're unhappy during awake times

• They fall asleep instantly for naps and bedtime

• They need lots of support to calm down

• They show frequent tired cues

For these babies, try taking a few days of fully assisted naps (in cars, prams, carriers, etc.) and adjusting the sleep environment to encourage longer daytime sleeps could be helpful. Trust your instincts

Remember, you're the expert on your baby. While technology can provide valuable data, ultimately, you know your baby best. Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to deviate from "standard" advice if it's not working for your family.

In conclusion, understanding your baby's unique sleep needs is a journey. It requires observation, patience, and a willingness to adapt. With these tips and the support of tools like the CuboAi Smart Baby Monitor, you can navigate this journey with confidence, ensuring your baby gets the sleep they need to thrive.

Babywearing in

Summer in Australia can be hot. Dry heat. Humidity. Extreme heat and heatwaves. This huge country has almost all climates, from temperate in the south, through to tropical in the north. East and west have their variations and cities like Melbourne can cycle through all seasons in one day!

Babywearing needs in each of these conditions will vary, as we endeavour to keep adults and infants comfortable and safe.

It is important to remember babies cannot regulate their body temperature in the way adults can. Overheating is a risk we must minimise at all times. On days of extreme heat, the best place for your baby or toddler is indoors in the coolest conditions you can provide. Limiting time outdoors to the cooler parts of the day and avoiding both direct sun and reflected sunlight is important.

When babywearing outdoors, remember exposed parts of your baby's body are at risk of sunburn. Long sleeves and long pants, made of cool fabrics, plus a hat which protects the face and neck, offer the best protection, with sunscreen used where skin is exposed. Adults should be aware of skin unexpectedly exposed by clothing shifted in the process of using a carrier. An umbrella can be useful to shield both from direct sun or the adult can wear a wide-brimmed hat which might cast shade over the baby. But be aware of reflected sun bouncing off sand, concrete and other surfaces.

The type of baby carrier you choose can make a big difference. Synthetic fabrics, padding and multiple layers can increase the warmth experienced by parent and child.

Natural fibres like cotton and linen can be coolest, with woven fabrics allowing more air flow than knitted ones.

Ring slings are generally the coolest design, as they have only one “pass” of fabric. Designs made from cotton mesh can maximise air flow. A spray bottle can be used to lightly dampen the fabric while in use, allowing some evaporative cooling. The “tail” of a ring sling can be used to shield the baby during brief periods of exposure to sun or wind but never cover the baby’s head in such a way that you cannot see their face clearly.

Woven wraps can be tied with techniques which are cooler and have less passes over the baby than stretchy wraps.

Carriers constructed of man-made fibres sometimes feature a mesh panel. Although this is claimed to be cooler, any benefit can be lost by the overall design which can trap body heat beneath synthetic fabrics and padding.

Marketing claims need to be considered against the climate that products were originally designed for: European or American designs don't always suit Australian summers.

Air flow from the side can help cool adults and children. Look for cotton or other natural fibres in structured carriers.

If babywearing needs to be used as a form of transport or settling in extreme heat, consideration of both infant and adult clothing can keep things more comfortable. Again, natural fibres are most cooling. Light layers can protect exposed skin without adding extra body heat.

Adults are at risk of feeling overheated if a baby is sleeping in a carrier and preventing them from removing layers. A good approach is a light cotton singlet or tank as a base for parent and baby, which will absorb sweat and keep sticky skin apart.

Over this, the adult can add a loose longsleeved open shirt after putting the baby in the carrier; this will protect their arms and shoulders from the sun and can be easily removed without disturbing the baby. A very light muslin wrap can be used over the carrier to shield the infant arms and legs from the sun, with a hat protecting their head. Never cover the baby in such a way that you cannot clearly see their face.

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outside world with your baby. Events, markets and festivals are much easier to navigate with your baby in a carrier; prams are not always easy to use in these environments. With a little planning, you can enjoy safe and comfortable time outdoors.

The state’s largest provider of foster care, Anglicare Victoria, has welcomed a new sibling care model to the region working to keep brothers and sisters in a safe place – together.

Anglicare Victoria Sibling Program Support Services manager in the south, Rebecca Jansen, said the new Sibling Placement Model had seen more children in care placed with their siblings.

“We often see siblings who have looked after each other at home and they've got a very strong bond. There’s evidence to show that separation of siblings is quite detrimental and leads to riskier behaviours and emotional trauma. Maintaining that connection is incredibly important,” she said.

The goal of out-of-home care is always to reunify siblings with their parents, or, when that’s not possible, find a kinship care option or a long-term placement together.

Through the model, children are cared for in the same home by a sibling-placement carer for four weeks, supported by therapeutic specialists, placement support worker, family worker, and the kinship engagement team as next steps are decided.

“It's rewarding to know you’ve provided care for a whole sibling group, just to see the smiles on their faces when they know they get to stay together. It makes a big difference to these kids,” Ms Jansen said.

If you can provide a safe place for children in need, or you’re a foster carer who would like to know more about the Sibling Placement Model, please get in touch with Anglicare Victoria’s southern team on:

SMALL PRINT

"I am often asked how we make our fingerprint jewellery. Here is a brief rundown on our unique and personally meaningful method. We use a special material called sterling silver clay, which is soft and malleable, allowing us to capture a loved one’s fingerprint directly.

When they press their finger into the clay, it leaves a lasting, personal impression-an intimate touch made permanent in silver.

After capturing the fingerprint, we cut the clay as desired and fire it in a kiln. During firing, the clay burns away, leaving only pure sterling silver with the fingerprint beautifully preserved in the chosen shape. This transformation is as symbolic as it is beautiful, turning a simple touch into something enduring and wearable.

This process continually reminds us of the profound connection a single fingerprint can hold. It’s truly rewarding to create jewellery that carries such deep personal significance.

Our Journey to Simply Swap Foods

Many people ask us why we started Simply Swap Foods and for us, it’s a very personal story. Seven years ago, David was diagnosed as pre-diabetic which took us by surprise as we cooked most meals from scratch, exercised regularly and thought we ate a healthy diet. The GP we consulted at the time suggested a lowercarbohydrate eating style to halt the journey to type 2 diabetes. So we decided to give it a try.

I remember my initial reaction - what are we going to eat? Our go-to breakfasts of porridge or muesli, sandwiches for lunch and pasta for dinner were suddenly off the menu. It felt like everything we “enjoyed” was now off limits!

ADAPTING TO A LOW-CARB LIFESTYLE

As I researched the latest nutrition studies, I found compelling evidence suggesting that everyone can benefit from reducing sugar and carbohydrates. Our first change was eliminating high-carb foods and simply including more protein at each meal along with above ground vegetables, healthy fats and berries for sweet cravings.

Once we embraced this new focus, I soon realised that we weren’t depriving ourselves at all. I was able to create healthier replacements for traditional carb-heavy foods and the positive changes we experienced almost immediately motivated us to keep going.

THE SURPRISING BENEFITS

Within about four months, David lost 20kg of excess weight that he’d carried for over a decade and I lost 15kg that I’d given up on ever losing especially since I was approaching menopause. Most of the weight came off in the first few months then a steady release after that. But what surprised us the most was our newfound energy – we no longer needed afternoon naps that had become part of our routine. Plus all the joint pains that David had endured for years in his knees, hips and knuckles disappeared, without any medication.

For me, another discovery was that symptoms typically associated with menopause – hot flushes, tiredness, lethargy – all but disappeared when I ate this clean low-carb way. If we had a “cheat” meal, hot flushes would instantly return and I could see a direct connection between the food that I ate and the way my body reacted and felt.

Improved mood was another huge bonus and incorporating intermittent fasting into our routine enhanced it even further. For anyone interested in learning about fasting, I highly recommend Dr Mindy Pelz’s book “Fast Like A Girl” which shares powerful insights on how fasting benefits our health, especially as we age.

FEELING BETTER IN OUR 50S THAN IN OUR 30S

Today, David and I have more energy and mental clarity in our 50’s than we did in our 30’s and 40’s. Six months after eating low-carb, David no longer had any signs of pre-diabetes. Aging doesn’t have to mean slowing down and feeling heavy with achy joints. We wish we had learned this information years ago but are very grateful to know it now. We never knew we could feel this great!

YOUR JOURNEY TO FEELING FANTASTIC STARTS HERE

If you’re ready to take the first step with simple, supportive guidance, head to our website and check out our latest eBook “The Real Food Experiment”. This easy to read guide provides simple steps for transitioning to low-carb eating, along with resources and motivation to help you begin your journey to a healthier you. You’ll also find our range of healthy premixes, designed to make adopting a low-carb lifestyle easier.

Why not make 2025 the year you feel your best and turn your health around? Don’t just take our word for it – try it yourself and see how your feel!

What have you got to lose?

*As always seek the advice of a qualified health professional before making significant changes to your diet (see our website for resources).

With a background as a food writer and cookbook author, Linda Martinucci has for many years been following nutritional studies and medical research aimed at the best way to fuel our bodies for optimal health.

In 2017, Linda made the decision to overhaul her eating style and was amazed at how much better she felt by simply reducing carbohydrates and increasing healthy fats, also helping her and her husband to not only experience weight loss and increased overall energy, but also severely reducing his inflammatory aches and pains. With Simply Swap Foods products and recipes, you can indulge and feel great too!

MAKE UP YOUR MIND DAY

The name of this unofficial holiday comes from the English language phrase make up your mind, which means to make a decision.

The day encourages people to take charge of their lives and make decisions that they can stand by and be proud of, in the upcoming new year.

Did You Know…

…that according to some studies, making high-stress decisions can tire out the brain, making it less effective for other activities?

TO CELEBRATE

BACKWARDS DAY

Celebrating Backwards Day is easy, simply do everything backwards or 'sdrawkcab'. While it is unclear who created this holiday, it is evident that they wanted it to be a day for celebrators to break all rules and to do things their way. Wear your outfit backwards, and if you can, talk and write backwards.

Did You Know… …that penguins are not able to walk backwards?

DO A GROUCH A FAVOUR DAY

Do a Grouch a Favor Day, you can make someone’s day by doing something extremely nice for them. Be cheerful, remember happiness is contagious and your cheer may just rub off.
