THE MULTIPLICITIES OF THE MONOTYPE DON KRUMPOS

Workshop ID: 2D1813 Date: Jun 29-30 • 9am-4pm Media: Printmaking Skill Level: All Levels Member: $235 • Non-Member: $260 Includes materials fee.

Investigate the possibilities within your paintings by fostering an abstract and non-objective approach to art making. With the goal of achieving a point of balance in each composition, you will alternate between working spontaneously and methodically. Conversations surrounding the history of painting will provide your work with context.

CONCEPT

He will share a multitude of ways to begin an abstract painting, as well as how to maintain engagement throughout the process. You will be encouraged to work independently in the afternoon with Emmett available for feedback.

Demonstrations will address general printmaking techniques, including ink mixing, color theory, paper handling, iteration of the multiple, materials safety, and press use, as well as monotype specific techniques, such as subtractive and additive painting, stencils, and more. Plenty of hands-on practice will be a priority. Open to all levels, however knowledge of two-dimensional elements of art and design are helpful.

INSTRUCTOR

INSTRUCTOR

For over 20 years, Emmett Johns has been working intensively with pastels, oil and acrylic paints. He is nationally recognized for his landscape, portrait, and large-scale abstract paintings. The structural integrity and portrayal of the deeper essence of a particular place or person are of utmost importance to the artist. Emmett’s work can be found at his gallery in the Settlement Shops in Door County, and during the winter, at his gallery in Albuquerque.

www.EmmettJohns.com

EXPERIENCE

Don Krumpos grew up on a farm in Northeast Wisconsin cobbling together inventions from his father’s cast-iron machinery and developing a kinship for bric-a-brac and found objects. He is an art educator and makes work that embraces the spectacle of live performance and the participatory nature of the art making and viewing processes. Don also runs Jabberwock Studio and Gallery in Algoma, showcasing artworks by regional and national artists.

CONCEPT

EXPERIENCE

The first day of this workshop will emphasize observation - walking, sitting, listening, touching, looking from various locations and vantage points within Peninsula State Park, followed by time to record and document. On the second day, meet in the studio to share, organize, and construct artworks using your documentation as the raw material. Suitable for all levels, but those with an existing practice in a visual or non-visual medium will most benefit.

Kyle will discuss and demonstrate a variety of color and value concepts, including modern color theory, identifying value, mixing color, building harmony, and the strengths and weakness of modern organic, mineral, and earth pigments. CONCEPT

CONCEPT

How does a portrait in a particular location offer more information about the person in the frame? How can the environment act as a metaphor of interiority or show you what the person cares about and how they spend their time? Over the course of two days, explore examples of environmental portraiture - the act of photographing subjects in specific places.

Some photographs convey a story, a narrative that veers on the cinematic. These photographs appear to have a beginning already in motion, a dramatic situation in progress, and a conclusion that is up to the viewer to complete. How do you as a photographer create a scene specifically to photograph it?

EXPERIENCE Often environmental portraiture focuses on where people spend time working or living, but in this workshop you will include the natural surroundings of Door County as well. Focus will be place on working mostly with what you have, including the available light and circumstances around you. Use your camera to talk to strangers and find out more about their life. Familiarity with your camera is required for this workshop.

As a group, examine the work of Cindy Sherman’s Film Stills and Gregory Crewdon’s Twilight, as well as others. Analyze these photographs and discuss considerations like character, conflict, lighting, props, and logistics. Write a story for the sake of photographing it, and together scout a location, cast a lead and supporting cast, and photograph the story as it unfolds. As a group, the class will make films that are one frame in length.

Our public events provide a necessary thread in our tapestry of fine art education programs. Interwoven with workshops, PenArt exhibitions, community outreach and special events offer new perspectives on selected artistic themes. For instance, you’ll find workshops that correspond with media and themes highlighted in our exhibitions, which in turn bring inspiration for projects in our community outreach programming. Special events, like the Door County Plein Air Festival, are the celebratory pieces in our programming, giving students and visitors an opportunity to engage with artists and the creative process.

From the Ashes: Charcoal on Paper Aug 17-Sept 15, 2018

Charcoal was one of the first art mediums, having been introduced in early cave paintings. In fact, purists create their own charcoal much in the same way the caveman did; by charring wood. Limiting the creation of artwork to charcoal and paper also provides a study of the importance of proper values in making a work successful.

DOOR COUNTY

Travel & Accommodations Located on a 75-mile peninsula and surrounded by the waters of Green Bay on the west and Lake Michigan on the east, Door County has more than 300 miles of picturesque shoreline, sandy beaches, rocky bluffs and large tracts of undisturbed woodlands. Ten lighthouses still guard the harbors and the more than 40 islands of the county.

Tourists first came to Door County in the 19th century on schooners before there were roads. Much of Door County’s beauty and character has since been preserved in county and state parks, wildlife refuges, private preserves, sanctuaries, and trusts. Door County emerged as an art colony early in the 20th Century, and out of it grew Peninsula School of Art. Throughout the quaint harborside towns and the pastoral interior dotted with picturesque farms and orchards, quality art galleries and studios reflect Door County’s deserved reputation for culture in the country. 48 hours along with your registration confirmation notice. Instructors may request that you bring more supplies than you will actually use during the course of the workshop. The acquisition and cost of these items are your responsibility. Supply lists are also available on the web at PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org.

MEALS & HOUSING

Students have the option to purchase lunch at the School. Also, the School provides a microwave and refrigerator for your convenience, if you choose to bring a bag lunch with you. Peninsula School of Art has a limited supply of housing spaces available for each workshop, but additional visitor resources are available on our website. If you registered for PenArt accomodations and you need to cancel your housing reservation, the School must be notified by phone, and the following policies apply (in addition to any workshop cancellation fees): • 30 days or more prior to check-in date: Full refund of lodging fees, less a $50 processing fee. • 29 days or less prior to check-in date: No refunds or credits. There are no exceptions to this policy.

PETS

Please leave your pets at home. Pets, other than licensed therapy/service animals such as Seeing Eye Dogs, are not allowed on the grounds, in cars in the parking lot or in PenArt buildings. There are few housing accommodations in Door County that allow pets. If you must bring your pet, ask us about an appropriate kennel. If you plan to bring a service animal along to your workshop, please notify us in advance.

TO CANCEL A WORKSHOP REGISTRATION

PenArt makes a substantial investment when planning a workshop. While we understand that circumstances may arise causing a change in your plans, we must adhere to a business policy. If you need to cancel your registration, PenArt must be notified by phone, and the following policies apply:

• 30 days or more prior to a workshop:

Full refund of tuition, less a $100 cancellation fee. • 29 days or less prior to a workshop: No refunds for any amount. Cancellation fees reflect the cost of registration, staff, instructor contracts, material acquisitions, and other services. This policy applies to all registrants, regardless of the reason for cancelling. For your protection and should an unforeseen personal emergency arise, we HIGHLY recommended the purchase of trip insurance. Some credit cards, auto clubs, travel services, or online companies offer travel insurance for nonrefundable expenses. If it’s necessary for either an instructor or Peninsula School of Art to cancel a workshop, you will receive a full refund of tuition, but not other related expenses. If you drop out of a class once it has started, there are no refunds for any amount.

TRANSFERS

You may transfer from one workshop to another, space permitting, 30 days or more prior to the workshop for which you are currently registered. A $25 transfer fee will apply. Registrations are not transferable to another person. There is a limit to one transfer per student per year.

WAITING LISTS

When a workshop fills, we start a waiting list. There is no charge to be on the waiting list. If space becomes available we contact the first person on the list. That person has 24 hours to register before we move on to the next person.

PENART CANCELS A WORKSHOP

Occasionally, Peninsula School of Art must cancel a workshop due to low enrollment, faculty illness or other unforeseen circumstances. If we do, we will notify you as soon as possible. You may then register for another workshop (based on availability) or receive a full refund of tuition and fees paid to PenArt. Notification of cancellation will normally occur three weeks prior to the beginning of the workshop, in rare cases however, it may be less. Peninsula School of Art is not responsible for losses incurred due to housing, personal expenses, travel or other arrangements.
