What started as a handful of artists offering classes from a small gray building in a meadow in Fish Creek, has now grown to become the premier Midwest destination for visual arts education. 6
PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org
WELCOME Peninsula School of Art is delighted to present the work of 32 plein air masters during our 16th annual Door County Plein Air Festival. Over the last sixteen years, the Festival has contributed in so many ways to making Door County the Midwest’s premier art destination. During the Festival, we’re sure you’ll see, not only our Invited Artists, but many who have been inspired to join in the spirit of the event. We couldn’t be happier to see so much live action art-making in one place! When looking for the Invited Artists, here are clues that guarantee you’re engaging with a Door County Plein Air Festival Invited Artist: • A lanyard with the artist’s Festival badge • The authorized Festival stamp on the back of the painting
• The official Festival artist t-shirt • The sale of paintings limited to our
Guenzel Gallery and the silent auction at noon on Saturday on the PenArt campus.
If you plan to purchase a plein air painting during the Festival, we ask that you please consider doing so through Peninsula School of Art. Not only will you support PenArt’s educational community programs through one of Door County’s oldest area non-profits for the visual arts…56 years and counting…but you will support the Door County Plein Air Festival’s Invited Artists too! We are thrilled to be back in person this year, and hope you will join us for a week of celebration around the visual arts. Looking forward to seeing you soon! PENINSULA SCHOOL OF ART: BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH THE VISUAL ARTS
For over 100 years, Door County has been known as a haven for artists, creatives and art appreciators; and Peninsula School of Art (PenArt) is at the center of this vibrant arts community. Founded in 1965, PenArt is dedicated to the belief that everyone deserves access to the arts—and each of us has the potential for artistic expression. Our exceptional education programs, exhibits, and events open doors for curious minds of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to learn, discover and explore through the visual arts. For the first thirty years, PenArt was a summer-only school. In 1998, five new studios and the landmark Guenzel Gallery 8

were completed, allowing us to offer yearround arts programming. Since then, our programs have grown exponentially. Our adult workshop program - which typically runs from June through October - includes offerings in nearly 20 different fine art media, from oil painting to bronze casting and digital photography. Students and faculty travel from all 50 states to attend and lead our programs. 0ur children and teen workshop program participation has increased 40% and serves children ages three and half to seventeen. cont.

The Guenzel Gallery has become a centerpiece of the visual arts in Door County. It features a year-round calendar of educationally-themed exhibitions of master artists’ works. These exhibits are free and open to the public and typically include an interactive or hands-on component for gallery visitors of all ages. Our Community and Public Programs, which began in 2003, now serve over 3500 participants annually through free and accessible art education opportunities. They offer memorable, immersive learning experiences, nurture creativity and provide opportunities for intergenerational sharing and problem solving. And it doesn’t stop there. In 2016, we began dreaming of a new and re-imagined Peninsula School of Art campus - one with more space, more studios, and more connection to our Door County community. A place for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together to celebrate and grow through the visual arts. A creative community for learning, skills development and collaboration, a platform for dialogue, a safe haven for exploration, and a gateway to new community partnerships. We developed a master plan, then a

construction plan and then, with the support of our community, launched the 6.4 million dollar Door to Creativity Campaign in 2018. Due to the 2020 health crisis, we couldn't wait to break ground, or until we had raised the full 6.4 million dollars. We needed to prioritize and get our campus and studios back open safely and soon! During the winter and spring 2020-2021, we began the first phase of construction, completing a new youth studio wing and one new 2-D art studio, as well as upgrades and repairs to our existing structures, and some much needed infrastructure improvements. All of this work will allow us to serve you - our community - better in 2021 and beyond.
WAYS TO GIVE
Gifts of all sizes are appreciated. Peninsula School of Art accepts gifts via check, credit card, cash, stock or other tangible asset to the Door to Creativity Campaign. Gifts can include multi-year pledges, and are eligible for tax deduction. To make a contribution: PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org/DTC development@PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org 920.868.3455 Donors who give $10,000 or more have the opportunity to be listed on a recognition wall on the PenArt campus. Donors can also choose to honor or remember a loved one. Named giving opportunities are available for lead gifts of $25,000 or more.
But this is only phase one, and we need your help to fully realize the vision for a new and re-imagined Peninsula School of Art campus.

GUIDE TO ARTIST WATCHING

Where can I see the artists?
• From Monday through Thursday, •
•
22
select artists will be painting at the locations listed in schedule. Once the Festival begins, we will have handouts available at PenArt and our information stands detailing which artists will be painting at each location. If an artist is not scheduled to be at a site, it is likely they are painting “off the beaten path,” and we do not know their location. PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org
person-booth
Where should I stand while watching?
• Stand behind and off to the side of the artist.
• Do not stand between the artist and what they are painting.
• Leave plenty of room behind the
artist. They often need to back away from the canvas (up to 10 feet) to get a better view of their painting.
volume-up
May I talk to the artists?
• Absolutely! Most artists truly enjoy
talking about their art, however, painting plein air can also be stressful - deadlines, racing the sun, and painting for a potential award - so be respectful. • If you see an artist with headphones, it is likely they are trying to concentrate and probably can’t talk.
Comments
Suggestions for Things to Say or Ask
• Do you mind if I watch you work? • Do you mind talking while you paint? • Do you paint plein air often? • Why did you select this scene? • Do you teach workshops? If you love
what you are seeing, and have lots more questions, consider a workshop at a later date (maybe even at PenArt).

BECOMING A DOOR COUNTY PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL INVITED ARTIST
The Door County Plein Air Festival is an invitational event. A committee comprised of both notable, professional artists and collectors invites the field of approximately 35 to 40 featured artists. In October each year, the committee reviews a selection of artists from a database we maintain, which includes approximately 1000 plein air artists 24
PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org
from around the country. Invitations are extended in November of the year prior to the festival. To be considered by the Door County Plein Air Festival Invitations Committee, an artist must meet the following criteria:
• Be recognized regionally/nationally as a plein air artist.
• Be represented by a fine art gallery
with sales and regional/national media exposure. • Have been juried, or invited to participate, in other national plein air festivals within the last two years. The committee also considers the following:
• Artists must represent a variety of media and styles.
• Approximately 40% of participating artists reside in the Midwest.
• Approximately 40% are new to the Festival each year.
If you would like to be added to the database or would like to send updated images for our files, please submit the following no later than August 15, 2021(for possible consideration in 2022):
• An email inquiry explaining your
interest in the Festival with an active link to your website. • A current resume that verifies a match to the above criteria. • Three digital examples of current plein air artwork (at least 5” x 7” @ 300 dpi). Inquiries accepted by email only. Send to exhibit@PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org.

KURT BRIAN ANDERSON
MICHIGAN • OIL
Kurt began painting in 1995 and never looked back. An outdoor lover, he naturally gravitated toward Plein Air with the goal to paint the light rather than the objects upon which it lands. Preferring loose, authentic plein air studies to rendered studio pieces. “In the field, my goal is to get the composition, color, and values down. Nonessential details are edited out, forming a stronger statement.” He has participated in numerous competitions and has garnered many awards, most recently, sharing Artists Choice Award 2018 Paint Grand Traverse. He is a member of Oil Painters of America and American Impressionist Society.
SUZIE BAKER
TEXAS • OIL
Suzie Baker's painting "Rose's Sunflowers" was on the cover of the April/May 2020 issue of Plein Air Magazine. She is the current president of Oil Painters of America and holds signature status in that distinguished organization as well as the American Impressionist Society, American Women Artists, and others. In addition to being a still life and portrait artist, Suzie has been painting en plein air since she was a teenager. Additionally, she is sought-after workshop instructor, for her humorous and informative style.

BETH BATHE
PENNSYLVANIA • OIL
Beth Bathe’s representational paintings have been described by art critics as “evoking nostalgia, like that of an old sepia toned photograph, often with just touches of color.” Curiosity about the medium Beth works is often the first question of many viewers. Is it watercolor, is it oil? Beth’s answer: “somewhat both.” She works with Water Mixable Oil Colors in a limited palette, using brushes and unconventional tools. Beth crisscrosses the country, painting en plein air and participates in over ten high-profile juried and invitation competitions a year. Beth was a featured artist in the 2018 February/March issue of PleinAir Magazine.

CONNECTICUT • OIL
Zufar Bikbov’s passion for oil painting and the dynamic nature of the plein air work has led him to avidly explore the landscape in countries he lived in. Trained in Russian in classic academical traditions, he embraces experimentation in his artwork. Zufar’s painting style exhibits elements of both realism and impressionism. “My goal is to fill my works with lyricism, which is a story rather than just pure meditation. While painting a question that often arises: What is realism in art in the age of advanced photography? Painting en plein air gives me a chance to answer it.”

CARLA BOSCH
TEXAS • ACRYLIC
Carla’s life of color started 1976 in South Africa. The energy in her work is reflective of Carla’s vibrant personality and her giving nature is evident in her liberal use of colors. She loves painting plein air and is equally at home in her studio where Carla prefers to use photographs as reference points rather than images to paint exact replicas from. She approaches a blank canvas with absolute creative boldness. This bold impressionistic approach allows her to paint from her soul and maybe this is her secret to capturing such powerful emotions in her work. Carla now resides in Texas, USA.

From a young age, Brienne loved art but pursued a career in science. After graduating in Chemistry, she soon found that art was more than a hobby, it was a necessity. As a busy mom, she made time to build an art career. Brienne has earned signature status in several watercolor societies, including NWS, participates in national plein air events, and teaches workshops. Brienne’s passion is watercolor and plein air. SHAR COULSON
ILLINOIS • ACRYLIC
Shar Coulson's work reflects her love of nature with it's unpredictability and endless variety of organic shapes. Working intuitively, her objective is not to capture the realism of what she sees but to “gather truths” and use them to inform the figuration, gestural line work and organic forms found in her paintings. She was formally trained in classical figurative realism, yet finds her passion runs deepest in abstraction. Her sensibility is also deeply informed by a successful career as a designer and executive creative director. Shar exhibits both nationally and internationally.

He is a member of the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota, Oil Painters of America, and the American Impressionist Society. “We are here, just for a time. Everything eventually passes. MAT KENNEDY
ILLINOIS • WATERCOLOR
Through the process of drawing and painting I inspect, explore and celebrate physical manifestations of human endeavor. I am fascinated by junctions of materials and by the corrosive relationship between designed objects, patterns of use and the passage of time. My work explores the world that we have built, it’s adaptation and inevitable decay. People are present in my paintings by implication. Generations move on, put up signs and go out of business. Children throw stones and touch door frames which get dirty by the handle. Tools bear scars and grow weary with years of service. My paintings are love songs.

I think of each painting as a poem, inspired by thespace between the wind and the water, the fauna and the flora.

CRAIG REYNOLDS
ALAMBAMA • OIL
The evolution of my art career began early on. My dad was a huge influence on me as well as masters Sargent, Payne, the Wyeth’s and mentor Roger Dale Brown. I became a full time professional artist after retirement in 2005. I have always been intrigued by great old barns, farm scenes, landscapes, old barnacle laden working boats, harbors and the history told by well worn scars and patina. I strive for my paintings to tell a story without much written description.

BRIAN SINDLER
ILLINOIS • ACRYLIC
Brian Sindler is an award winning plein air artist whose works embody the feeling evoked by the landscapes he paints as opposed to literal interpretations meant to replicate everything encountered by his eye. This is in direct contradication to his formal education at the School of Representational Art, a French style academy devoted to the proliferation of realism. "People often say, just paint shapes. I would ask, are you so concerned with painting shapes that you forgot why you painted in the first place?" Simply stated, he is a painter of mood.
