WELCOME Whether you are an art enthusiast, lover of Door County, aspiring artist, or collector, the Door County Plein Air Festival is not be missed! Throughout the week there are a myriad of ways to connect and engage with the 35 invited master artists - from watching them paint on location at an iconic Door County gallery, to attending a lecture, or purchasing an original piece of fine art. During the Festival, we’re sure you’ll see, not only our invited artists, but many who have been inspired to join in the spirit of the event. We couldn’t be happier to see so much live action art-making in one place! When looking for the invited artists, here are clues that guarantee you’re engaging with a Door County Plein Air Festival invited artist:
• A lanyard with the artist’s Festival badge
• The official Festival artist t-shirt • The sale of paintings limited to Friday and Saturday on the PenArt campus.
We're thrilled to announce The Quick Paint Live Auction is back in 2022! The artists will be painting in Fish Creek on Saturday morning and the live auction will take place on the Great Lawn at Peninsula School of Art at 12:30 pm. If you plan to purchase a plein air painting during the Festival, we ask that you please consider doing so through Peninsula School of Art. Not only will you support PenArt’s educational community programs through one of Door County’s oldest area non-profits for the visual arts…58 years and counting…but you will support the Door County Plein Air Festival’s invited artists too! Looking forward to seeing you soon. Board and Staff of PenArt

PENINSULA
SCHOOL OF ART & GALLERY A HAVEN FOR ART LEARNERS, MAKERS, AND APPRECIATORS ON THE DOOR COUNTY PENINSULA. It doesn’t matter how old you are, your skill level, or what differences you might have outside of the studio or gallery — inside, there’s an energy that vibrates. Maybe it’s the hum of the potter's wheel. A paintbrush, loaded with vibrant color. The excited chatter of gallery-goers who have just found a new favorite artwork. Whatever the case may be — the energy signals growth, and exploration. A chance to connect with others — and embolden yourself — through hues and texture and shape and light. It’s an energy that’s alive and well at PenArt — and we invite you to be a part of it. Phone: 920.868.3455

The Guenzel Gallery, our exhibition space, displays a rotating schedule of exhibitions of nationally-recognized artists’ work throughout the year. These exhibitions celebrate both in-process and finished work, with the goal of offering visitors of all ages insight into the artistic process and a fine art experience that feels just at home in the quiet of Door County as it would in a large city.
ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM Our Artist-in-Residence program is designed for visual artists of all types and experience levels, and offers an immersive studio experience where artists can devote time and space to the reflection, research, and experimentation of producing new bodies of work. The program is open to six individual artists—during their stay with us, these artists receive a semi-private workspace in our new Madeline Tourtelot Studio Building, access to specialized equipment, housing; and a variety of professional development opportunities.

WHERE CAN I SEE THE ARTISTS?
MAY I TALK TO THE ARTISTS?
• From Monday through Thursday, •
•
select artists will be painting at the locations listed in schedule. Once the Festival begins, we will have handouts available at PenArt and our information stands detailing which artists will be painting at each location. If an artist is not scheduled to be at a site, it is likely they are painting “off the beaten path,” and we do not know their location.
person-booth WHERE SHOULD I STAND WHILE WATCHING?
• Stand behind and off to the side of the artist.
• Do not stand between the artist and what they are painting.
• Leave plenty of room behind the artist. They often need to back away from the canvas (up to 10 feet) to get a better view of their painting.
18
PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org
• Absolutely! Most artists truly enjoy
•
talking about their art, however, painting plein air can also be stressful - deadlines, racing the sun, and painting for a potential award - so be respectful. If you see an artist with headphones, it is likely they are trying to concentrate and probably can’t talk.
Comments SUGGESTIONS FOR THINGS TO SAY OR ASK • • • • • •
Do you mind if I watch you work? Do you mind talking while you paint? Do you paint plein air often? Why did you select this scene? Do you teach workshops? If you love what you are seeing, and have lots more questions, consider a workshop at a later date (maybe even at PenArt).
BECOMING A DOOR COUNTY PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL INVITED ARTIST
The Door County Plein Air Festival is an invitational event. A committee comprised of both notable, professional artists and collectors invites the field of approximately 35 to 40 featured artists. In October each year, the committee reviews a selection of artists from a database we maintain, which includes approximately 1000 plein air artists 20
PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org
from around the country. Invitations are extended in November of the year prior to the festival. To be considered by the Door County Plein Air Festival Invitations Committee, an artist must meet the following criteria:
• Be recognized regionally/nationally as a plein air artist.
• Be represented by a fine art gallery
•
with sales and regional/national media exposure. Have been juried, or invited to participate, in other national plein air festivals within the last two years.
The committee also considers the following:
• Artists must represent a variety of • •
media and styles. Approximately 40% of participating artists reside in the Midwest. Approximately 40% are new to the Festival each year.
If you would like to be added to the database or would like to send updated images for our files, please submit the following no later than August 15, 2022 (for possible consideration in 2023):
• An email inquiry explaining your • •
interest in the Festival with an active link to your website. A current resume that verifies a match to the above criteria. Three digital examples of current plein air artwork (at least 5” x 7” @ 300 dpi).
Inquiries accepted by email only. Send to exhibit@PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org.

JOSHUA CUNNINGHAM
MINNESOTA • OIL
Joshua Cunningham's path to becoming a professional artist has been as winding as the country roads of his youth - from the abstract art departments of St. Cloud State and St. John’s University, to an apprentice with Minnesota fresco painter Mark Balma, and training at The Atelier in NE Minneapolis to four years at Hurinenko and Paquet Studio in St. Paul, studying portraiture, still life, figure drawing and plein air landscape painting. Once his easel was outside, Joshua didn't look back. For him, few experiences were as challenging or enriching as painting on location. It brought him back to his roots and he was learning to do what he had truly wanted to do as a boy.

MAT BARBER KENNEDY
ILLINOIS • WATERCOLOR
Born into a family of architects, I have an abiding passion for buildings and the fabric of cities; bricks and mortar, plaster, concrete and steel. I am fascinated by the corrosive relationship between the design of objects, the evidence of their use and the passage of time. My work explores the world that we have built, it’s adaptation and inevitable decay. People are conspicuously absent from my paintings, but are always present by implication. Generations move on, put up signs and go out of business. Children throw stones and touch door frames which get dirty by the handle. Tools bear scars and grow weary with years of service. My paintings are love songs.

IOWA • OIL
James Navarro is a contemporary Impressionist painter working out of Des Moines, Iowa. His paintings focus on color and light trying to capture the essence, the mood, of what he sees. Born and raised in the Driftless Region in western Wisconsin he has a connection to it’s unique rolling landscape and nostalgic farm life. “The practice of plein air to me is not always about getting a completed 'alla prima' painting done but more about just being outdoors enjoying the process and nature without anyone giving me their two cents for a few hours.”
