WELCOME Peninsula School of Art is delighted to present the work of 38 plein air masters during our 13th annual Door County Plein Air Festival. Over the last thirteen years, the Festival has contributed in so many ways to making Door County the Midwest’s premier art destination. During the Festival, we’re sure you’ll see, not only our Featured Artists, but many who have been inspired to join in the spirit of the event. We couldn’t be happier to see so much live action art-making in one place! When looking for the Featured Artists, here are clues that guarantee you’re engaging with a Door County Plein Air Festival Featured Artist: • A lanyard with the artist’s Festival badge
• The authorized Festival stamp on the back of the painting • The official Festival artist t-shirt • The sale of paintings limited to our Guenzel Gallery and the live auction at noon on Saturday If you plan to purchase a plein air painting during the Festival, we ask that you please consider doing so through the Guenzel Gallery at Peninsula School of Art. Not only will you support PenArt’s educational community programs through one of Door County’s oldest area nonprofits for the visual arts…54 years and counting…but you will support the Door County Plein Air Festival’s Featured Artists too! Thank you and have a wonderful time. The Board & Staff of PenArt

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH THE ARTS
For over 100 years, Door County has been known as a haven for artists, creatives and art appreciators; and Peninsula School of Art (PenArt) is at the center of this vibrant arts community. Founded in 1965, Peninsula School of Art is dedicated to the belief that everyone deserves access to the arts—and each of us has the potential for artistic expression. Our exceptional education programs, exhibits, and events open doors for curious minds of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to learn, discover and explore through the visual arts. For the first thirty years, PenArt was a summer-only school. In 1998, five new studios and the landmark Guenzel Gallery were completed, allowing us to offer year-round arts programming. Since then, our programs have grown
exponentially. Our adult workshop program - which typically runs from June through October - includes offerings in nearly 20 different fine art media, from oil painting to stone carving and digital photography. Students and faculty travel from all 50 states to attend and lead our programs. 0ur children and teen workshop program participation has increased 40% and serves children ages three and half to seventeen. The Guenzel Gallery has become a centerpiece of the visual arts in Door County. It features a year-round calendar of educationally-themed exhibitions of master artists’ works. These exhibits are free and open to the public and typically include an interactive or hands-on component for gallery visitors of all ages.

Our Community and Public Programs, which began in 2003, now serve over 3000 participants annually through free and accessible art education opportunities. They offer memorable, immersive learning experiences, nurture creativity and provide opportunities for intergenerational sharing and problem solving. And it doesn’t stop there. In June of 2018, we announced the Door to Creativity Campaign to reinvent and revitalize the PenArt campus. The upgraded PenArt campus will serve
as a platform for artists of all ages, inspiring creative growth and fostering the next generation's imagination. It will dramatically enhance our canvas for artistic and educational programming, and provide a welcoming, inclusive setting for the celebration of creative expression within the Door County community. The Door County Plein Air Festival is a celebration of creativity - and it is just one of the ways PenArt makes art happen. We bring nationally-recognized artist-educators to the Door Peninsula. We’ve expanded our reach through Family Art Days and school programs. And artists from around the country share their works and process with the community in our Guenzel Gallery. But we have reached a tipping point. There simply isn’t enough space to hold the growing number of creative learners, art appreciators and young artists that visit Peninsula School of Art on a daily basis, or to offer the types of programs our community – near and far - has come to depend on us for.

GUIDE TO ARTIST WATCHING
eye
Where can I see the artists? • From Monday through Thursday, select artists will be painting at the locations listed on schedule (pages 16-21). • Once the Festival begins, we will have handouts available at PenArt and our information stands detailing which artists will be painting at each location. • If an artist is not scheduled to be at a site, it is likely they are painting “off the beaten path,” and we do not know their location.
Phone: 920.868.3455
person-booth
Where should I stand while watching? • Stand behind and off to the side of the artist. • Do not stand between the artist and what they are painting. • Leave plenty of room behind the artist. They often need to back away from the canvas (up to 10 feet) to get a better view of their painting.
volume-up
May I talk to the artists? • Absolutely! Most artists truly enjoy talking about their art, however, painting plein air can also be stressful - deadlines, racing the sun, and painting for a potential award - so be respectful. • If you see an artist with headphones, it is likely they are trying to concentrate and probably can’t talk.
Comments Suggestions for Things to Say or Ask
• Do you mind if I watch you work? • Do you mind talking while you paint? • Do you paint plein air often? • Why did you select this scene? • Do you teach workshops? If you love what you are seeing, and have lots more questions, consider a workshop at a later date (maybe even at PenArt).

PAULA SWAIN
Utah • Oil Both parents were art teachers, so painting plein air was part of life since childhood. My work could be described as semi-representational expressionism, sometimes fauvism. I also love local colors, the creamy grays of an overcast day. I don’t want to limit myself with labels. Plein air provides breathtaking moments of changing light, friendly people, flocks of chattering birds, the smells of the earth, water and trees. I paint plein air year-round, my goal is for the viewer to feel the joy of the landscape. When painting, as with music, I strive to make each note beautiful, each spot of color delicious.
