COMPLEX FORMS, ELEGANT PROCEDURES: INVENTIVE APPROACHES TO UNCONVENTIONAL MATERIALS SHANE MCADAMS
ID: 2D1909 Jun 14-15 • 9am-4pm Any Painting Media, Drawing • All Levels Member: $225 • Non-Member: $250
CONCEPT
This workshop is designed for students with an interest in experimenting with materials and exploring new artistic directions based on those experiments. The majority of artwork we encounter in the world reflects a divide between media and subject. In our quest for representation and illusion, we often miss the potential of various media to exercise wonderful internal qualities.
EXPERIENCE
Working through an array of materials, you will examine them for their natural qualities. From there, you will assign various ‘verbal’ actions on each material. Note the effects, and determine which ones are worth pursuing further. The second half of the workshop will encourage you to work with one or two specific materials, looking to tease out an individual composition or series of compositions as a final takeaway.
INSTRUCTOR
Shane McAdams is an artist, educator, writer, and curator. His work has been exhibited at the John Michael Kohler Art Center, Museum of Wisconsin Art, Haggerty Museum of Art, and others. Shane is a three-time Creative Capital awardee and Andy Warhol Writer’s Grant finalist. He currently writes for the Shepherd Express and runs the gallery REAL TINSEL in Milwaukee.

ID: 2D1914 Jun 19-22 • 9am-4pm Drawing • All Levels Member: $450 • Non-Member: $490 To paraphrase Paul Klee, “a line is a dot undertaking a journey”; a joyous and wondrous idea, yet for so many drawing is an unimaginative and inexpressive process. In this workshop, Mat will share his philosophy and approach to drawing as a rich art form and aid in establishing lively, representational paintings.
EXPERIENCE
The first half of the workshop will be spent going over perspective in participatory and intuitive exercises that will help you over the “I don’t get it” hump and gain confidence. While the second half of the workshop will encourage you to develop a more expressive voice. Expand your language of line and tone, as you draw with your fingers, erasers, and pencils. Be prepared for a busy week loaded with information and hands-on experience.
INSTRUCTOR
For over 20 years, Mat Barber Kennedy has been drawing and painting aging machines, tools, and buildings. Constructed in layers, adapted over generations, and decaying in pieces, he is fascinated by the junctions of materials and corrosion of designed objects over time. Mat is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, and in 2007 was awarded the Turner Medal in London. In addition, he has been featured in the Door County Plein Air Festival for several years.

The instructor teaches in such an all-encompassing manner that truly has you feeling like an artist. This workshop was so important not only because my confidence in my technical skills improved, but I learned new ways to generate ideas and new ways to conceptualize them. Her activities include "3D sketching" where various materials are used to give an idea life in sculptural form where pen and paper would fall short. Anyone looking to examine their creative processes in order to make themselves more productive, more original, and more uninhibited, should definitely take a class like this! 2018 Metals Student

This workshop will demystify the process of creating a photographic book. Whether you’re interested in working on a conceptual project or a book of favorite photographs, you will gain an understanding of developing a finished book from the making of photographs to the final product of a bound volume.
Adobe Lightroom® is a great tool for organizing, editing, renaming, and resizing your images, but it can be daunting without a guide to get started. This workshop is the solution for beginners who want to get the most out of the program in a practical, hands-on way.
EXPERIENCE
EXPERIENCE
Kasey will lead you through a series of Lightroom® editing tasks, including how to perfect exposure, solve color cast woes, sharpen soft images, create black and white versions, and batch process groups of photos to speed up your workflow. You will also discuss the best ways to download, sort, and back-up your images to ensure they are stored safely and easily retrieved when needed. Facility of your computer is required for this workshop, as well as either Adobe Lightroom®, 3, 4, 5, 6 or Adobe Lightroom Classic CC®.
A combination of lectures, demos, short screenings, and guided animation exercises will introduce you to the various facets of animation. Expect to complete at least one animation exercise each day using different methods and techniques. Additionally, time will be dedicated to support the development of a longer, more involved animation project that may extend beyond the four days of the workshop. This workshop is open to all levels and accessible to artists of all media..

When registering for a children's workshop, you might have questions about what to expect. We have a routine, but it allow for lots of impromptu fun! • Each day, your child’s instructor greets them at the door to their studio. • Backpacks, snacks, jackets, etc. will be set aside and children will head inside for a creative warm-up. • Once all of the students have arrived, instructors will introduce the topic of the workshop and get started on the lessons for the day. • Teaching methods include demonstrations, group brainstorms, readings, viewing and discussing the work of well-known artists, and, of course, hands-on practice through skill building projects and final works of art. • Halfway through the class, a break will be taken outside (If you wish, pack a snack for your child. PenArt does not provide snacks). • More art making! • Children will set aside projects that need to be completed the next day and safely pack up finished artworks to take home. • Meet your child in their studio at the end of class and see what they have accomplished. Instructors are available to answer questions and share what the rest of the week will bring.

THE FUTURE OF COLLAGE August 16 to October 5 Opening Reception: Friday, August 16, 4-6pm In examining artists’ diverse approaches to collage and assemblage, this exhibition endeavors to show how these techniques can be used to express ideas about modernity and America’s throwaway culture, and as a way to capture the poetic potential of the everyday. The resulting works of art are richly textured pieces whose shifting forms and associations can be read as metaphors for the constantly fluctuating realities of contemporary life. Featured Artists: Tim Abel (IL), Bruce Basch (WI), Tanya Hartman (KS), Andy Ducett (MN), Troy Dugas (LA), Carol Emmons (WI), Melissa Oresky (IL), Ann Toebbe (IL)

ocated on a 75-mile peninsula and surrounded by the waters of Green Bay on the west and Lake Michigan on the
east, Door County has more than 300 miles of picturesque shoreline, sandy beaches, rocky bluffs and large tracts of undisturbed woodlands. Ten lighthouses still guard the harbors and the more than 40 islands of the county. Tourists first came to Door County in the 19th century on schooners before there were roads. Much of Door County’s beauty and character has since been preserved in county and state parks, wildlife refuges, private preserves, sanctuaries, and trusts.
