A DAY IN THE
Studios
When registering for a Summer Studios for Young Artists workshop, you might have questions about what to expect. We have a routine, but it allow for lots of impromptu fun! A typical day looks like this:
• Each day, your child’s instructor greets them at the door to their studio.
• Backpacks, snacks, jackets, etc. will be set aside and children will head inside for a creative warm-up.
• Once all of the students have arrived, instructors will
introduce the topic of the workshop and get started on the lessons for the day.
• Teaching methods include demonstrations, group
brainstorms, readings, viewing and discussing the work of well-known artists, and, of course, hands-on practice through skill building projects and final works of art.
• Halfway through the class, a break will be taken outside
(If you wish, pack a snack for your child. PenArt does not provide snacks).
• More art making! • Children will set aside projects that need to be completed the next day and safely pack up finished artworks to take home.
• Meet your child in their studio at the end of class and see
what they have accomplished. Instructors are available to answer questions and share what the rest of the week will bring.

THE LANGUAGE OF
Art
Your child may have questions about techniques we cover in the workshops. Below are some definitions for you to share.
Screen Prints – Using a stencil to block out lines and shapes, ink is pushed through a silkscreen using a squeegee to create a single- or multi-color image. Screens can be used again and again for a series of identical prints. Monotypes – A loose printmaking process, monotypes are made by painting ink on plexiglass and transferring to paper via friction. These prints are unique and difficult to replicate. Collagraphs – Starting with a collaged surface of different textures, such as leaves, corrugated paper, or cloth, ink is applied and then transferred to paper.
10 info@PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org
Relief Prints – Wood or linoleum blocks are carved to create a printable surface with positive and negative areas to form an image. Collage – A process for creating an image, abstract or representational, by gluing various found material to a surface. Hand Building – Pinch, coil, and slab construction techniques are used when making hand built vessels or sculptures. A potter’s wheel is not used in this process. Wheel Throwing – A potter’s wheel is used to make cylindrical forms of all sizes - including cups, vases, bowls, and plates. Hand building techniques can be used later to add handles and feet.

To Cancel a Registration
• PenArt makes a substantial investment when planning a workshop. While we understand that circumstances may arise causing a change in your plans, we must adhere to a business policy. If you need to cancel your child’s registration, PenArt must be notified by phone, and the following policies apply: • 30 days or more prior to a workshop: Full refund of tuition, less a $25 cancellation fee. • 29 days or less prior to a workshop: No refunds for any amount. • Cancellation fees reflect the cost of registration, staff, instructor contracts, material acquisitions, and other services. This policy applies to all registrants, regardless of the reason for cancelling. • For your protection and should an unforeseen personal emergency arise, we HIGHLY recommended the purchase of trip insurance. Some credit cards, auto clubs, travel services, or online companies offer travel insurance for non-refundable expenses. If it’s necessary for either an instructor or PenArt to cancel a workshop, you will receive a full refund of tuition, but not other related expenses. If you drop out of a class once it has started, there are no refunds for any amount.
Transfers
• Your child may transfer from one workshop to another, space permitting, 30 days or more prior to the workshop for which they are currently registered. A $15 transfer fee will apply. Registrations are not transferable to another child. There is a limit to one transfer per student per year.
Waiting Lists
• When a workshop fills, we start a waiting list. There is no charge to be on the waiting list. If space becomes available we contact the first person on the list. That person has 24 hours to register before we move on to the next person.
PenArt Cancels a Workshop
• Occasionally, PenArt must cancel a workshop due to low enrollment, illness or other unforeseen circumstances. If we do, we will notify you as soon as possible. You may register for another workshop (based on availability) or receive a full refund of tuition paid.. Notification of cancellation will normally occur three weeks prior to the beginning of the workshop, in rare cases however, it may be less.
