family businesses supporting Pentacle and our Community."

Pentacle Theatre is grateful to The Lulay Group for their generous sponsorship, the contribution of a much needed truck to support our Pentacle community.

When I proposed to direct Arsenic and Old Lace to Pentacle I asked to be considered for the first slot of the 2025 season. Not that winter is my favorite time, but because I firmly believe all theater seasons should contain at least one classic play — or as we theater old-timers call it, a “chestnut.” Starting the season with a classic comedy, I felt, would set the tone for a wonderful season. I certainly hope that comes to be true.

Arsenic and Old Lace is ALWAYS being performed somewhere and has been consistently since 1941. 84 years! Whether it’s a Broadway revival, a tour, community theater, college theater, high school, or even middle school, somewhere at any given time there is a production happening. It’s a play almost everyone has seen somewhere. Yet my goal is to make it still feel as fresh and relevant today as it was when it first came out, mere months before America joined World War II.

With all the turmoil in the world today, as in 1941, sometimes you just need a really good laugh. We can all use an occasional break from reality and just enjoy watching live theater and escaping our worries for a brief moment. I hope that my cast and I have done our job and that you come away from your time with us today with a smile on your face and a spring in your step! Enjoy the show!

PS: I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Chris Benham, Bob Barnett, Joyce Gardner Kemp, and Lisa Hall am Closner. I simply cannot thank you enough!

Alice Mary Norton

The family and friends of Alice Mary Norton honor her longtime commitment to Pentacle Theatre by sponsoring this production.

Alice began volunteering at Pentacle in 1985 and immediately fell under its spell. Over the next 35 years, she was involved in a wide range of theatre support roles including building sets, stage management, sound, lights, props, play reading, and fund raising as the long-time Benefits Chairperson. She was also a familiar face to many as the cheerful lady in the jaunty hat who delivered Pentacle posters to businesses around town.

Alice’s dedication and accomplishments were acknowledged in 1994 as the first recipient of the Claytene Vick Volunteer of the Year Award. In 2014, she was selected to be a Pentacle Lifetime Member.

Alice loved volunteering – but even more she loved being part of the Pentacle family. So from her family and friends to you, we hope you enjoy all that live community theatre has to offer.

Scott Ramp Director

Scott returned to the Salem area in 2020 after spending most of the past 40 years living in Los Angeles, working as an actor/director and as a makeup artist and a teacher. Since returning to the Salem area, Scott has been seen at Pentacle in It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play and at The Elsinore in A Little Night Music: In Concert. He was last seen as Principal Hawkins in Pentacle’s The Prom. He also directed the play Terra Nova at Pentacle and designed and oversaw the makeup for last year’s hit musical Shrek the Musical. Prior to moving back to Salem in 2020, Scott was last seen onstage as Lazar Wolf in a 16 week run of Fiddler on the Roof at the Lawrence Welk Resort near San Diego. In addition to acting in dozens of productions around Los Angeles from Shakespeare to Broadway touring companies (La Cage Aux Folles with Broadway legends Larry Kert and Harvey Evans), Scott has taught makeup, acting and directed dozens of plays as a faculty member at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood since 1985.

He runs large-scale events, primarily at Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags parks and has been the makeup designer at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles since 1992. He appeared on Season 5 of the SyFy television series Face/Off. He designed makeup for numerous productions at The Old Globe in San Diego, including the world premiere of Meteor Shower with Steve Martin and Camp David with Richard Thomas.

For most of the past 40 years Scott has been living in Los Angeles, working as an actor/director and as a makeup artist and a teacher.

An actor by training, Scott has performed in dozens of plays and musicals and is a sought-after theatre director. He spent 35 years as a faculty member at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood, teaching makeup to actors and directing plays.

As a makeup artist, he has taught and mentored hundreds of artists over the years, one of whom won the Best Makeup Academy Award in 2014 and thanked him at the Oscars.

Every five years, the Pentacle Theatre Governing Board honors as Lifetime Members five people who have been active in Pentacle Theatre for at least 20 years. We also remember fondly those Lifetime Members who are no longer with us.

Travis Brown

Mortimer Brewster

Travis is overjoyed to be a part of Pentacle's production of Arsenic and Old Lace. He last appeared as Wil Schneider in Theatre 33's popup production of Red Line. Travis was previously on the Pentacle stage as Oates in Terra Nova His other favorite past roles include The Earl of Bothwell in Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off and Ralph in Frozen (no relation to the Disney musical). Travis works as a hydrogeologist for the Oregon Water Resources Department and, in his precious free time, can be found fishing Oregon's sublime rivers, lakes, and coasts or grubbing around in the dirt of his garden. Travis would not have this opportunity without the love and encouragement of his wife, Valerie. He is grateful for all the support he has received from friends and family. He would especially like to dedicate this show to his grandmother, Laurie, one of the sanest, sweetest people he's ever known and who never poisoned anybody – that he knows of….

Robert Condron Office Brophy

Robert Condron is excited to be a part of another Pentacle Theater production. He was last seen in the recent production of Boy Gets Girl at Pentacle Theater. Other theater productions include The Bishop of Lax in See How They Run and Rev. Bentley in Anne of Green Gables at the Gallery Theater in McMinnville. He has been an active member of the community at Keizer Homegrown Theater as well, taking on the roles of John Hemminges in The Book of Will, Speed in The Odd Couple, and Mayor Shinn in The Music Man. He is excited to bring another character to life and looks forward to continuing to grow as an actor. He considers it an honor and a joy to learn from the wonderful group at Pentacle and the director Scott Ramp. He wishes to thank all of his friends for their enthusiastic support: Linda Baker, Jenn, Robbie, Mandi, Ryan, Liz, Megan, Shilah, Paul, and Deb.

Megan Emerick

Elaine Harper

Megan is so excited to be a part of her third Pentacle show! She was previously seen as Theresa Bedell in Boy Gets Girl and the ensemble of Prom the Musical Megan started her love for theater in middle and high school. She continued performing in college at the University of Idaho, where her favorite role she’s played was Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream Megan received her Bachelor in Science studying Medical Science and obtained her Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Medical Coding. Megan is so grateful to be included in this incredible cast and expresses her thanks to Scott for this incredible experience. She would like to thank her family: Austin, Kirby, Dawn, Jason, and Wykes for their endless love and support.

Walter Haight Rev. Harper/Lt. Rooney

Walter is happy to be back on the Pentacle stage after a threeyear absence. He was last seen in Over the River and Through the Woods in 2022. Prior to that, he appeared in Distracted, Little Shop of Horrors, Dancing at Lugnasa, A Christmas Carol, and Leading Ladies, among others. Walter also trods the boards at Gallery Theater in McMinnville, where he recently appeared as Mr. McClam in Fly By Night. He is thrilled to be joining this immensely talented cast and crew.

Ken Hermens

Jonathan Brewster

Ken made his Pentacle debut 50 years ago as the Gentleman Caller in 1975’s The Glass Menagerie (a show being revived as part of Pentacle’s 2025 season!). Since then, he has directed or appeared in more than 70 Pentacle productions. Some of his favorite previous villainous roles include Julian in Communicating Doors, Dr. Corasco in Man of La Mancha, Neville Landless in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and, most recently, as Mr. Body in last season’s Clue: On Stage. Ken has served three terms on the Pentacle Theatre Governing Board and is currently the board President. He is particularly pleased to be in this production since his first stage appearance ever was playing Mr. Witherspoon in Arsenic and Old Lace as a freshman in high school. He sends his love and appreciation to Stephen, and the ever-faithful Casey and Prince Charming.

Deborah Johansen Abby Brewster

Active at Pentacle Theatre since 1979, Deborah has been a Lifetime Member since 2019. As an actress, her favorite roles have included Ado Annie, Daisy Mae, the Witch in the 1994 production of Into the Woods, Rhetta Cupp in Pump Boys and Dinettes and each of her roles in Almost Maine. She was last seen on stage as Aida Gianelli in Pentacle’s 2022 production of Over the River and Through the Woods. Some of the shows she has enjoyed directing for Pentacle are The Sunshine Boys (1984), You Can't Take it with You, Guys and Dolls, Once Upon a Mattress, Mary Poppins (fundraiser) and Dashing Through the Snow. Deborah is a retired drama teacher and as always thanks her son, Jordan, for his love and theatrical support for these many years. Colossians 3:17

Justin King

Officer Klein

Justin has previously appeared on the Pentacle stage as Tom Snout as Wall in A Midsummer Night's Dream (2012), Charlie Lee and The Lonesome Cowboy in Radium Girls (2013), Lennox in Macbeth (2014), Topper in A Christmas Carol (2017), and a waltzing ball attendee in Cinderella (2020). His most recent work was props master (including making all that paper snow) for The Play That Goes Wrong (2023). He is thrilled for the opportunity to reprise his role as Officer Klein, having portrayed the same character in the Bear River Middle School (Utah) production of Arsenic and Old Lace more years ago than he cares to admit. Justin is a data analyst for Oregon Health Authority. If he had free time, he would spend it hiking, writing, and building Lego spaceships with his kids.

Frank Kowal III Teddy “Roosevelt” Brewster

Born in Michigan, raised in Southern California, and living in Oregon, this is Frank’s first show with Pentacle Theater. He has been a fan of the film Arsenic and Old Lace since childhood, but never expected to ever be in it and have this fantastic experience and opportunity to work with a wonderful cast and director.

Frank worked in Hollywood for years, both in production and on set. He has acted in some capacity since high school, and has had various parts in numerous films ("Bleak Future," 1997). He met his wife Mary, who was in Pentacle’s production of Footloose, in Hollywood. He is an avid fan of 1930s books, films, and radio shows. Frank speaks Polish— poorly— but you probably couldn't tell.

Anthony took his first role in 1971. For the next 10 years, he immersed himself in the theater, doing 40some productions.

In the following 30 years, he focused on other artistic endeavors: photography, voice-over and narration, film and television production and acting, music, drawing, and, particularly, wire sculpture, only taking the stage as a singer in a Chicago funk/rock/jazz band.

After returning to Salem in 2018 he finally stepped back on stage as an actor in The Elephant Man, Dracula, Murder on the Orient Express, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play and The Fantasticks at Pentacle Theatre, and Life Sucks at The Verona Studio.

Once an actor. Always an actor. You may make your exit, but you’re just waiting in the wings for your next entrance. Anthony wishes to express his sincere pleasure in having worked with this fine cast, crew and director, and hopes very much that you will all happily leave your troubles at the door, and have a good laugh with us.

Ed Schoaps

Mr. Gibbs/Mr. Witherspoon

Ed has acted and directed at midWillamette Valley theaters since 1976. Among scores of roles, he has appeared in Witch at Oregon Contemporary Theatre; Song of Extinction at Theatre 33; Murder on the Orient Express, Other Desert Cities, and 9 to 5: The Musical at Pentacle Theatre; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Fool for Love” at Gallery Theater; Shakespeare in Love at Valley Shakespeare Company; and Life Sucks, True West, and Uncle Vanya at The Verona Studio. Ed’s directorial credits include A Streetcar Named Desire, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and Cabaret at Pentacle Theatre; Novecento, at The Verona Studio and Gallery Theater and Equivocation at Struts & Frets Theatre Co. Ed also hosts the twice-monthly KMUZ Theatre Talk program on KMUZ Community Radio in Salem. Ed loves theater that touches the soul and speaks to what it truly means to be human. Ed shares his passion for stagecraft and the fun of being “a theater family” with his talented wife, Susan, and their two talented children, Chris and Antonio.

May 9 - May 31, 2025

Saturday, March 1, 2025

Ringing in the New Year inspires both taking a look back at the previous year and looking forward to what the upcoming year has in store for us at Pentacle. So here are a few random thoughts from each of those perspectives.

Looking back on 2024…

There was much to celebrate last year, perhaps foremost Pentacle’s 70th Anniversary, which was commemorated with a colossal party infused with memorable entertainment.

Audiences continued their post-Covid return to Pentacle shows as attendance for all shows on the season was strong, with Clue: On Stage and Footloose, in particular, performing to multiple sold-out crowds.

And, due to a combination of robust ticket sales, show sponsorships, and donations from our generous patrons, Pentacle returned to financially performing “in the black” in 2024!

Looking forward to 2025…

We have another exciting lineup of plays and musicals that we hope will continue the ticket sales momentum from the 2024 season!

We have begun the process of refurbishing our deck structure, a challenging and expensive process that should address our deck’s stability for years to come.

Lastly, we welcome three new Governing Board members Anthony Barghini, Jennifer Killikelly, and Noah Vanderburgh, who will bring their fresh perspectives to our Board, and we welcome back Heather Toller who has graciously agreed to fill the remainder of the term of Toni King-Byous who needed to step away from her board duties to deal with a family illness.

So we bid a fond farewell to 2024 and look forward to an amazing 2025!
