Boy Gets Girl, as a title, at first seems innocuous. It sounds like the resolution to a romantic comedy that starts with a meet-cute and proceeds through a series of predictable tropes to a fairytale ending. Considered under another light, however, the title hints at something more foreboding, posing questions about how we think and speak about romantic pursuit and how these assumptions shape our behavior.
In many ways, the central themes of this script reflect, challenge, and play on the rom-com genre, asking us to take a deeper look at some of the messages in these stories and the societal attitudes that shape them. The play explores the impact of behaviors like big romantic gestures and persistence after rejection. It also analyzes societal messages and expectations, such as the pressure to give someone a chance even when not interested or to use romantic relationships as a measurement of self-worth and success. For these reasons, I have chosen the rom-com movie genre as the lens through which to view and frame this show.
To me, this script is particularly relevant for not just questioning potentially harmful actions and assumptions about romantic pursuit, but also exploring the systems and structures that perpetuate these assumptions and create the environments in which these actions are possible. Through our conversations with the cast and production team, we found that everyone could relate to the story in one way or another, and every character goes through a journey as they grapple with these questions.
It has been an honor and a privilege to bring this important story to life here at Pentacle. Thank you for coming on this journey with us and joining the conversation.

She just graduated from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration and is happy to move back to Oregon. She was previously seen in the ensemble in Pentacle’s production of The Prom Her favorite role she’s played was Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Megan would like to thank Emily for this incredible opportunity and her family, Austin, Dawn, Jason, Troy, Wykes, and Kirby for the endless love and support.
Like many in the Pentacle community, my first introduction to the talents of Virginia Choate came as an audience member. I can still remember watching her remarkable work as Miss Mackay in the 1985 production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. The fact that her performance is still indelibly imprinted on my mind after 30 years is testimony to the amazing gifts of this fine actress. I must admit that at the time I made the somewhat common error that the woman I watched so intently had to be similar in character to the role she was playing on the stage. To some extent, there were some similarities a strong and fiercely determined spirit was certainly a quality that the actress and character shared. This impression was further reinforced about a year later by her performance as Mother Miriam Ruth in Agnes of God.
It wasn't until 1988 when I was given the gift of directing Virginia in The Gin Game, that I had the opportunity to get to know her well as a person. The show was singularly challenging; in addition to being a two-person show, the plot involved a long and complex series of hands of the card game gin, requiring both Virginia and her co-star, the equally awesome Bob Putnam, to memorize one of the most challenging scripts I can imagine learning. Through the rehearsal process, Virginia demonstrated not only an admirable tenacity and patience but a wickedly sharp sense of humor and willingness to explore the vulnerabilities of her character. She was the actress of my fondest dreams.
It has been more than 20 years since Virginia's passing, but for me, the images she created are still fresh in my mind and I still sense her presence at Pentacle Theatre. Thanks to her generosity, Pentacle audiences not only have the legacy of her work as part of our collective memory, but also a series of shows have been performed that reflect much about what she was like as a person: impressively strong, infused with formidable talent, and ultimately unforgettable.

Pentacle Theatre in Salem is located within the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya, Yamhill, and Luckiamute people who have lived here since time immemorial. In the 1850s, these tribes were displaced by colonization and were eventually resettled on reservations. We celebrate and honor the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz members, their resilience, and their present and future right to this land.
