THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk Football Club for today’s home game with Faversham Town. It’s a particularly warm welcome to East Brighton Park to officials and fans from North Kent. Faversham have played a small but important part in Hawks history. We both left county league football for the first time in 2010 and the Lilywhites were our first opponents at the Enclosed Ground at the new level in Ryman South. 120 fans saw a 2-2 draw although the Faversham manager seemed completely fazed by having to travel so far south for the game. That was the first of four visits to Brighton and the Hawks have only won once. In 2020, having trailed 2-0 for most of the game, dramatic injury time goals by Duane Ofori-Acheampong and Charles Banya saved a point. A Marvin Hamilton back heel did the same on Faversham’s last visit. It was great to see so many Hawks fans at East Grinstead last weekend, even if the disappointment of another late goal denied us that long awaited three points. A very small band of diehards made the Tuesday night trip to Hythe earlier in the week and took the 95th minute equaliser from our opponents with a disappointed shrug, rather than a sudden volley of abuse to anyone unfortunate to be in earshot.

As some of you saw last weekend, the end of match abuse from a Hawks fan was directed very personally at me. This is not the first time that this has happened. I don’t know whether it’s disappointment at the final score or just something in the current climate that seems to make public abuse seem acceptable, but nobody should have to put up with that sort of behaviour, whether it’s at a football match or on the street outside parliament. I have made comments on this page before about our support making the difference, especially when not everything is going our way. When your team is struggling, we need everyone pulling together in the same direction, not turning inward, and looking for someone to blame. I appreciate the solidarity shown by the rest of our supporters, both at the game and in comments afterwards. So once more, I urge you to stay safe, enjoy the match and get right behind both the management and team.

ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE
Whitehawk are welcomed back to the colourful home comforts of The Enclosed Ground on Saturday afternoon. Following forays far and wide of this green and all rather similar part of the country, it’s the Hawks’ turn to host some Kentish opposition as Faversham Town shimmy on over. It is a meeting that assures recognition and pride. Not so much for the result, or for the hurricane-style winds that continue to overpower the city, rather the deeply progressive, profoundly imperative, ‘Football v Homophobia’ initiative that celebrates inclusion and diversity. Football is for everyone. LAST TIME OUT Right, where did we go…. ah! East Grinstead of course. Following a procession of 2-2 draws, it was a return to the binary code of old with a 1-1 stalemate on a typically cold February day at East Court. An opening half restricted of action and threat, there was only one figure in blue to break such a deadlock minutes prior to the pause. Step up, Javaun Splatt. Capitalising on his opposing defender’s woeful touch, the
forward curled emphatically and precisely into the far-corner stanchion. Reminders of his wonder goal in this season’s reverse fixture, it would count for only a point as Andrew Briggs made up for his missed penalty with a dipping drive from range that snuck in under the crossbar. Another point, that’s three consecutive draws for the Hawks. THE OPPOSITION Having played the two sides that sandwich Whitehawk in 16th and 14th position respectively, it’s time for another foe in close proximity as 13th placed Faversham zip along a few speedy roads to make a Sussex coast arrival. Goalless in their past fixture on this recent Saturday with VCD Athletic, it stretched the unbeaten run to two following their 2-0 win over Burgess Hill the week before. But inconsistent nonetheless. Joining the many whose form has been chequered, erratic, weird, they lie just two points above the Hawks having played a game less. Victory for the hosts will see them jump up into their current position, provided East Grinstead come away from Lancing empty handed.
Marcus Elliot has seven league goals this campaign, although six came in the green and white shirt of VCD. Harry Harding’s five have all been scored for The Lilywhites, who, for a touch of thrilling trivia, are the only side in England apart from the national team to have three lions on their badge. Told you it was fun. PREVIOUS MEETINGS It was back in late October that these two sides last met: a dreary, dull affair that Faversham claimed 1-0. Even reflecting back a few months into the future now there is nothing of note that springs to mind, with the exception of Joe Denny’s close-range rifler, of course. 364 full rotations of the Earth before this witnessed the previous encounter between the clubs, at The Enclosed Ground no less. In a season that has been wiped from memory, and indeed record, it was the loyal Harding who gave his side a 59th minute lead that was instantly cancelled out by an intuitive Marvin Hamilton back-heel in front of 400 sated football-desperate faces. A share of the spoils it was to be.

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
The NLP’s Fan’s Forum letters page gets all sorts of weird, wonderful – and sometimes unprintable – contributions from readers. From debates about the NonLeague Pyramid structure, printed programmes, officials, friendly clubs or nostalgic trips down memory lane, we get the full spectrum of letters and emails. Often a reader will spark a great debate. This week, Ray Ellis from Tonbridge is that man with a question that has had our inbox flooded. Tonbridge Angels’ Sonny Miles recently claimed the club’s record number of appearances with 377. Who, Ray asks, is the record holder at one club across the whole of Non-League? Well, it certainly resonated. A reader from Grays flagged 673 games played by Phil Sammons and there was a
shout for Gerry Keegan of South Liverpool, who played 544 times for the famous club. Gloucester City fans have been on touch on their legendary midfielder Tom Webb, who made 718 appearances for the Tigers before retiring age 34. Regular contributor to our letters page, Marine superfan Barry Lenton, suggests Peter Smith with 957, while we also had shouts from Bognor Regis Town and Hampton & Richmond Borough. The nature of Non-League football means it may be hard to come up with a definitive answer. Earlier in the season, we spoke to Terry Buss at Hanworth Villa as the one-club man celebrated 800 official appearances for the Step 5 outfit – although he wondered if it was even more than that.
his debut when he was 16 – illustrating just how long it takes to rack up these numbers – and he was eyeing 1,000. “I’ll go as long as my body lets me, it’s starting to ache now!” he told The NLP. “Now that the 800 is up, the magic 1,000 is in sight. It would be another three or four years without missing a game but I’ve not missed many over the last 19 years so, fingers crossed, I can have a good go. “My son, Jimmy, is 12, I’m hoping when he gets to 16 he’s good enough to come in and take over from me!” We’ll print some of the letters in Sunday’s paper. TUESDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2022 | REACHFIELDS STADIUM | ATT: 147 | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST BY ISAAC GLEAVE Adam El-Abd places his hands onto his tired head, those in Whitehawk blue dropping to the used turf in disarray, disbelief. There’s a streak of red dancing in the twilight, jumping for the highest joy under a floodlit clarity. Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke stands hapless as the yellow ball rises over his head, and drops into the abandoned goal behind. So sweet would three points have been on this rearranged visit to the southern tip of our neighbouring county; so cruel it was that in the dying seconds Hythe would stab the Kentish sword into the visiting hearts, and run away from the scene with a point of their own. It was your classic stupendous, eccentric, adrenaline-fuelled non-league ride on eastern sands: four goals – two for Hythe, two for the Hawks, beneath a collection of solar-like beams shining their light onto a delightedly dry surface. Reachfields the location – 8

metallic and compact, a warm feeling filters through the veins regardless. That 90s sort of vibe, you know, with a great red box to house those that would rather sit, numbing the bottoms in the process. Anyhow, the night was fresh with a dark evening blanket hovering overhead, and a half-moon slightly tilted, as if dozing in the heavens as it shined through the thick layers of cloud. To say the fledgling moments of this crucial league fixture were frantic would fail to do it justice. Like a fluid game of basketball, this one was back-and-forth from the off. At one end it is the left boot of Olly Munt that spirals a tame dribbler into Henry Newcombe’s arms, at the other Leon Redwood spanks a low-driven effort off the line. Midfield vulnerabilities, there appeared to be no such structure in the middle of the pasture. What it catered for, though, was excitement, dazzling
entertainment for the few hundred that drifted in from the iron entrance; James Fraser stinging the paws before he angles another a Planck Length wide. Lungs bursting, hearts pounding. A breakthrough had been expected, it was just a matter of which side. Rise from the ashes, Fraser, whose cross-shot (definitely the former), evades Newcombe and his adjacent centre-halve before plopping into the corner of the netting. Not the faintest tickle off a man in red, this one was a Whitehawk goal, into the lead they marched. That is until a few minutes later, when The Cannons responded with a boom. Defending temporarily switched off, Tyler Sterling skipped beyond a few dangled, lazy legs on the right-hand side to advance acutely toward Stroomberg-Clarke, slipping it beneath his legs to the chorus of scattered cheers. Cue more celebrations, chiefly from Ross Standen and co., as Fraser sweeps home a second. Blink and you’ll miss it. The feast of goals continue to slide down the cliffs as the Hawks shoot on sight: Munt’s effort saved as far as Alex Laing on the lefthand side of the box, his pass back across goal disentombs the idle Fraser, who rumbles the netting. Teaming with desire and intent, this Whitehawk were first to every ball, every man – hunger, intent, communication…the combination for success as Munt skitters one wide of the right-upright. No time to rest. So as those from the stoney Sussex shores launched a continuous string of counter-attacks, the flickering reminders of Saturday so nearly returned as Alex Brown re-directed Luca Woodhouse’s low-driven free-kick marginally wide of the post. Danger averted, that’s four first half goals in the previous two games for Standen’s side, but this time a lead to take into the fifteen minute pause. It had been a half of promise, of passion. Hunting in packs, predator-like, hawk-like, in which direction would the compass point next? Well, the metaphorical winds were certainly with Hythe upon the restart. Evidently given a stern talking to by manager James Rogers, they returned frothing from the mouth. Increasing amounts of condensation departing the mouths of the ones dressed in that slick shade of blue, they knew this would be a long half. Inviting pressure a touch with a deepened defence, Alex Malins and El-Abd were immense against the threat. Organisation and ability, Stroomberg-Clarke was seldom tested between his sticks as
the wonderful Whitehawk noise from those weary, loyal travellers echoed and swirled in the night sky. Intense bombardment of the backline. The Hawks’ crossbar smacked by the ball from Tyler Sterling’s viscously whipped 25-yard set-piece. Ooooh they were getting closer, but still the minutes rolled by with the scoreline untouched. Off went Munt, on came Mo Kamara with the words ‘defence, defence, defence’ ringing in the mind. How pivotal a triumph here would be against fellow league strugglers. Diffusing the flow of the game at every given possibility, through each stages of the half the Hawks progressed unscathed. And then it was Scott Doe who had for but an inch of time convinced his followers into thinking this one was all knotted-up. Somehow it wasn’t, as mere yards from the goal-line his diving, tumbling, flailing header is clung on to by Stroomberg-Clarke. Relief. That’ll kill a bit more time. Into the final chapters now, the ball having made camp in the Whitehawk half, Harry Reed shown a second yellow card for a late lunge on Sterling. Never easy, is it? Ten men, ten minutes remain – a spot of freshness was required: Tegan Freeman entering the field of play in place of Laing, tightening that midfield further. But wait, at the opposite end for a chance….oh, that would have sealed it. Kamara coming within a post’s width of popping the champagne corks, his mazy run through the defence resulted in a flashshot wide of Newcombe’s far post. Clasped hands over mouths, there would be more work to be done, and even more twists in this ever-changing, ever-spiralling tale. Five additional minutes show to all corners of the ground on the fourth official’s glaringly bright board. What could possibly go wrong? Ah. Agony and despair for the Hawks, that’s what. Confusion at the back allows Riley Alford with too much space, too much time to lift the ball over the stranded Stroomberg-Clarke, and into the netting with a splash. For an entire half and more, Whitehawk had defended beautifully. But now, standing stationary in incredulity, a certain three points had been stolen at the finish line. Foiled at the game’s end, all the entitled frustration and fury will quickly channel through to the wider picture: another point richer, the goals start to flow, and the battles are nearing ever-closer to victory.

league REVIEW
BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Hastings leave it very, very late, and Sports win the battle of the bottom two Wins for the Millers, the Rams and the Nuts and Bolts keep up the pressure at the top. It’s our Pitching In Isthmian South East Round up. As we approached full time it looked certain that Hastings United’s lead at the top would be cut to four points. The leaders were being held one-one at Sittingbourne, and were down to ten men- but with the last kick of the match Tom Chalmers gave them victory. United had taken a very early lead through Craig Stone, but had been ahead for only nine minutes before Alex Flisher equalised for the Brickies. Sixty seven minutes came and went with no further goalsjust a red card for Andrew Sesay- and then deep into added time, Chalmers struck. Two goals in seven second half minutes from Hassan Ibrahiym gave Cray Valley PM all the points at Chichester City. Those two goals were the only goals of the match, and make it three wins in a row for the Millers, and seven unbeaten. Three points further back, albeit with a game in hand, are Ramsgate. The Rams were also in Sussex, at Burgess Hill Town, and went behind after a quarter of an hour when Lewis Finney put the hosts ahead with his seventh of the campaign. After the break Oliver Bate drew the visitors level, and then right at the end we had more action than expected, with a red card for the hosts Reggie Ward and a late winner from Jamie Coyle. Ashford United went into their match with Sevenoaks Town with only one win in five, but the Nuts and Bolts found their visitors the perfect tonic and walloped home four goals without reply. Gary Lockyer got the first two and the fourth to claim the match ball, Johan ter Horst the other, and Oaks are only a point above the bottom two. Corinthian are up to ninth, defeating Lancing by the only goal of the game. It came just before the break for Ryan Sawyer, and although the hosts lost Oscar Housego to a red card with twenty minutes to go the Lancers couldn’t take advantage.
Three Bridges have suddenly gone goal crazy, with five in their last match and three in the game before, and they got another three yesterday- although they needed a late equaliser to take a point. Visitors Hythe Town will be disappointed after turning around a deficit and looking set for victory. Brannon O’Neill gave the hosts a tenth minute lead, but the advantage was cancelled out only two minutes later by Tyler Sterling. Dan Perry restored home advantage just after the half hour, and they held it until nineteen minutes from time when George Crimmen got an equaliser for the Cannons- and then with six minutes to go Sterling looked to have taken the three points back to Kent. Right at the end, however, Ben Bacon popped up to take a point for Bridges, who are twelfth, four points and four places above their visitors. Faversham Town and VCD Athletic had to settle for a point each- and no goals, whilst a Sussex derby between East Grinstead Town and Whitehawk also ended level, but they did manage a goal apiece. The Hawks took the lead for minutes before the break, Javaun Splatt with his fourteenth of the season, but the Wasps stung six minutes from time to take a point, Andrew Briggs with the goal. Our big match at the bottom saw the Phoenix Sports revival continue. The hosts and visitors Whitstable Town were goalless until the seventieth minute when Steve Carvell made the breakthrough for Sports, and right at the end Alfie Evans doubled their advantage. That takes them off the bottom- the Oysterboys replacing them- and continues a run which sees them sixth in our ten match form table, with only three defeats in almost two months. The great escape is looking more likely by the day, and it must have Sevenoaks Town and Lancing looking nervously over their shoulders. Herne Bay and Haywards Heath Town’s battle was abandoned at half time.

OUR VISITORS
WE LOOK AT TODAY’S VISITORS TO THE TERRAPURA GROUND Faversham Town’s origins go back to 1884, and they entered the Kent League for the first time a decade later. The club name however was not really consistent, with the team turning out as Faversham Town, Faversham Invicta, Faversham Services, Faversham Railway and Faversham Rangers among others before being disbanded shortly before the Second World War. Faversham Town reformed after the war and entered the Kent League in 1947. The club moved to its current home - Salters Lane the following year. Faversham Town had a decent amateur side but found the going tough against some of the professional Kent League clubs. Nevertheless, they won the Kent Amateur Cup in 1957 and 1959. With the Kent League folding in 1959, the club had spells in both the Aetolian and Greater London leagues before rejoining the revived Kent League in 1968. Success soon followed. They were Kent League champions in 1970 and 1971, and lifted the Kent Amateur Cup three years in a row between 1972 and 1974. After a brief flirtation with the Athenian League in the mid seventies, the club returned to the Kent League, winning the Kent Senior Trophy in 1977. The following season they repeated this success and were also crowned Kent League champions, completing a famous “double”. The Lilywhites won the Kent League again in 1990, but league form dipped in the 92/93 season and was to stay that way for several seasons. The club managed to to reach the final of the Kent League Challenge Cup in 2000, but things were in rapid decline. Matters reached crisis point in 2003, when the KCFA suspended the club for non payment of fines, with the club’s operators blaming just about everyone for the mess except themselves. In the following months, the once proud Salters Lane ground was systematically wrecked by vandals. Meanwhile, club trustees led by businessman Ray Leader fought a desperate battle to heal a widening rift with the previous 20
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
regime over the ownership of the club and ground. In a separate development, the Faversham Town Independent Supporters Club had been formed, and quickly gained a membership of over 300 paid up members in the market town. This was despite the fact the club had no team, no manager, and a ground that had been totally wrecked by vandals and now resembled a bomb site. Perhaps the real turning point came when trustees and Independent Supporters Club committee members got together and declared an alliance to get the club back on its feet. An interim club committee was formed, and the long road to recovery was started. The revival was slow, but things finally started to happen. The revived club played their first season back in 05/06, competing in the Kent County League and finishing as runners-up. Having passed ground inspections and fulfilled minimum criteria, promotion to the Kent League was confirmed, and Faversham Town had at last “come home”. Season 2007/08 saw the arrival of Justin Luchford and Jimmy STrouts taking over the management with Town second bottom of the league. The team sunk to bottom before the pair gradually steered them up to mid table. Strouts soon left for personal reasons and Luchford, along with Clive Walker, took the Lilywhites to the Kent Senior Trophy final in season 2009/10, beating Greenwich 2-1 to lift the trophy. A week later, they were crowned Kent League Premier Division champions. Towards the end of his first season in the Ryman League, and with Town within touching distance of the play-offs, Luchford resigned. His place was taken by his assistant Ray Turner. Turner took charge of the last seven league games securing eighth spot - the highest position of any Kent team competing at that level. Another significant milestone was reached in 2010 when the revamped stadium was renamed Shepherd Neame Stadium after a sponsorship deal with the town’s famous brewery.
Having consolidated their position as a mid-table Ryman South side during the first two years of Turner’s reign, Faversham embarked on one of the best seasons in the club’s history during the 2012/13 season. The Lilywhites lost just three away league games all campaign on their way to finish third and reach the Ryman South play-off final against all odds. However, at Maidstone United’s newly-built Gallagher Stadium in front of a 2,226 strong-crowd, Town were unable to pull off one final upset against a side with huge investment and backing. Maidstone cruising to a 3-0 victory to deny Faversham their first tastes of Ryman Premier League football. Town spent the majority of the 2013/14 campaign just outside the play-offs, and ultimately had to settle for tenth position in their fourth season in the Ryman South. Off the pitch, Town continued to grow with another significant advance. They came together with nearby Faversham Town Youth & Juniors to form a new youth section, meaning boys were now playing in the famous white and black kit from the age of five. The move also created a route through from youth development into the senior side and enabled the newly-expanded club achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club rank, marking their rise in status. The Lilywhites took another step forward in February 2014 with the announcement of an ambitious project to redevelop Shepherd Neame Stadium. The plans - broken down into five phases - include rebuilding the changing rooms, adding hospitality an function rooms, extra seating in the stands and a new stadium entrance. A coffee shop and retail store will then be added, with meeting rooms and offices also being built to bring in ad-
ditional revenue. A new 120-seater stand, fitness centre and sports hall will also be built. Fundraising for the project then began. Faversham had a productive 2014/15 season, scoring 111 league goals - more than any other Ryman League side that campaign - and amassing a record 97 points to finish in third place in the Ryman South for the second time in three seasons. But the club suffered more play-off heartache, as they lost 5-4 on penalties at home to Merstham in their Ryman South Play-off Semi-Final following a goalless draw away. Faversham came fifth at the end of the 2015-16 season, again reaching the play-offs, but after beating Dorking Wanderers 2-1 in the semi-final they lost 3-0 to Worthing in the final, leaving them knocking once more on the door of the Ryman Premier Division. The 2016/17 season was one of transition for the Lilywhites on the pitch, and success off it as they forged ahead with Phase One their ambitious rebuilding programme. A tenth place finish was achieved with a young squad as manager Ray Turner dealt with a number of unexpected player departures, which led to a mid-season wobble. However, in May 2017 MP Helen Whately opened the new changing rooms as the first stage of the stadium redevelopment was finally completed. In 2018/19, a disappointing start to the season led to Ray Turner stepping aside. Phil Miles and Dan Chapman were appointed as joint managers in his place. The lacklustre season continued, and in the end the team finished 17th, two places and ten points clear of relegation. After an indifferent start to the 2019/20 season, Town parted company with their joint managers in October. In their place, new manager James Collins brought in assistant Nick Davis and Coach Brad Sandeman.

Today’s game contains a significant first: the mighty Hawks are playing in the soon to be iconic (surely) David Shrigley designed, Rainbow Rovers shirt. This marks the first time that the League has given permission for an “unofficial” shirt to be worn for a league match. The Club, the fans, today’s opponents, the Isthmian League coming together as one community to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month and to promote tolerance and equality. Sadly, though, a single game of football – even one that is the culmination of a week of events – will not solve the problems and intolerance faced by the LGBTQ+ community; even in a city as relatively tolerant as Brighton & Hove. However, there are a great many groups, organisations and charities in and around Brighton & Hove which provide support, advice, care, entertainment and more for LGBTQ+ people in the city. SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
