Welcometotheofficials,playersandfansfromSheppeyUnited.We enjoyedexcellenthospitalityatHolmParkinOctoberandwish everyonefromKentasafejourneyhome.Thatgameended1−1,with apenaltyapiece,andweanticipateasimilartightgametoday.
PriortothisseasonwehadonlymettheItesonceinourhistory,when theytriumphed2−0inanFACup1st roundqualifyingtiein1984,just thethirdtimewehadenteredthecompetition.Iwonderifanyof today’svisitorsrememberDaveThanwellscoringinthefirstminute fortheItes,withasecondaddedmuchlaterbySteveWadhams. MalcolmJudgewasingoalfortheHawksinthatmatch–andhewent ontomakehis500th appearancefortheclubonthisveryday,just overtenyearslater.OnlyRussellGunn,whoalsoplayedinthe84 Sheppeygame,hasmademorefirstteamappearancesforthe Hawks.
ThankstoalloursupporterswhomadethelongtriptoPottersBar TownonTuesday,fortheVelocityCupsemi-final,amatchwecould easilyhavewon.Wewereincontrolofthegameforlongperiods, withoutcreatingtoomanychances–butwecertainlydidn’tlooklike concedingtwiceinfourminutesaroundthehourmark.
Ispoketotherefereeafterthematchaboutpotentialhandballsin bothhalves–andhewasadamantthatforthesecondappeal,the ballhadhitLucaCocoracchio’sarm,notthedefender.APottersBar stewardevensaidtomeafterthematchthatitwasablatantpenalty. Whenyouwatchitbackonvideo,theballclearlycomesoffLucaand notthedefender.Therefereewasstandingafewyardsawayand hadaclearview–sohegotthatcallspoton.Otherswhowatchedit oncefromallsortsofdifferentangles,willswearblindthatthe refereerobbedusofablatantpenalty.Hedidn’t.Justlikeeveryone elseIjoinedintheappealatthetimeandhopeditwashandballbya defenderwhenanarmconnectedwiththeball–butsadlyitwasn’t.
Refereesandassistantsgetalotofcriticismatourlevelofthegame, muchofitfrommanagersandfansaftertheirownteamhaslost. Somemanagers,liketheVCDfellalastweek,justscreamabuseand complainfor90minutes.IamverypleasedthatShaundoesnotget involvedduringthegamewithanyofthis.He’saspassionateabout ourresultsasanyothermanagerbutsetsagreatexampleby behavinginadignifiedmannerandrespectingtheofficials,windraw orlose.

Oh,whataseason.The2021/22campaignwasoneof,ifnotthe,bestoftheirlong existenceontheislandonecanonlyreachbybridge.Anew3Gpitch,yousay?Well, that’snotall,asfour(yes,FOUR)trophieswereliftedby‘TheItes’inaseasonthatsaw themwintheSCEFLPremierDivisionwith102points,pippingChathamTowntothe podiumbyamere2points.Ofcourse,bothteamsarewithusnow,andbothteams meanabsolutebusiness.Sheppey’sstarttolifeintheIsthmianLeague’shasn’tbeen quiteasglamorousastheirMedwayneighbours,buttheyremainoncoursefora successfulcampaignastheyliejustapointshyoftheplayoffpositionshavingplayed agamemorethantheHawks.
