THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk FC for tonight’s Isthmian League South East fixture against Faversham Town. It’s a particularly warm welcome again to East Brighton Park to officials and fans from North Kent, who made a wasted journey here last month with the game called off late. Faversham have played a small but important part in Hawks history. We both left county league football for the first time in 2010 and the Lilywhites were our first opponents at the Enclosed Ground. 120 fans saw a 2-2 draw although the Faversham manager seemed completely fazed by having to travel so far south for the game. Defender Matt Bourne played for the visitors in that game in 2010 and returns here again this evening. The 2010 game was the first of four visits to Brighton by Faversham and the Hawks have only won once,

in 2011. In 2020, having trailed 2-0 for most of the game, dramatic injury time goals by Duane Ofori-Acheampong and Charles Banya, who played left back for Sevenoaks here on Saturday, saved a point. A Marvin Hamilton back heel did the same on Faversham’s last visit. There was a tremendous atmosphere here on Saturday for National NonLeague Day, as we recorded our highest attendance of the season (613). It’s just a pity the performance on the pitch and the result were a disappointment. We obviously need to get the momentum going again as we approach the business end of the season. Hopefully, some of those players missing or not fit to start will quickly be back in 90-minute action. Thanks for your support this evening and a special shout out to those of you who have made it back here again after Saturday. Stay safe, enjoy the match and get right behind both the management and team. Andy Schofield

ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TONIGHT’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE
Whitehawk return for one last flurry under the bright bulbs of The Enclosed Ground’s floodlights on Tuesday evening by welcoming James Collins’ Faversham Town. Deprived of an away victory in the league since November 20, it’s been not the cheeriest of times away from home comforts for Collins’ outfit. As the country covered themselves from Storm Eunice’s whipping winds and relentless rains our fixture with Faversham was understandably postponed until further notice. Well here we are. Still feeling the fatigue from the Non-League Day hangover, the Hawks re-host The Lilywhites as they quest to consign Saturday’s defeat into oblivion. LAST TIME OUT In the blissful Spring heat the Hawks’ unbeaten run reached its terminus as Sevenoaks slipped away narrow victors in a sterile game on the field, but a wild afternoon in the stands. And that’s how Non-League Day should be: 613 faces watching on as they cheered, shouted, sung for Whitehawk. It just wasn’t to be.
And it was not to be Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke’s afternoon, too, having successfully saved Yahaya Bamba’s low-driven spot-kick, only for the ball to fall straight back to the fortunate forward. The contest’s lone strike, Whitehawk huffed in the heatwave but were powerless in their attempt to rescue a point. Conquest for The Oaks injects a few flapping butterflies as they climbed away from the relegation play-off spot, and moving just one point behind Whitehawk in the process. Still, there’s always a chance to ease the tension soon after… THE OPPOSITION So what of these weary Kentish visitors travelling great lengths on such an evening in late March? Perched in 13th position back-to-back home wins over Herne Bay and Three Bridges respectively have eased all fears of a potential drop from the league. Bolstered by the 8th best home record in the division, it combines with the second-worst away record that results in a lower mid-table spot. Just two scalps on the road, they
will look to feed their league top-scorer Harry Harding whose six goals on the season are bettered only by the ten Emmanuel Oluwasemo has struck, though six of those have arrived in cup competitions. PREVIOUS MEETINGS Excluding their previous shortlived voyage last month, it was back in late October of 2021 that these two sides last met: a dreary, dull affair that was narrowly claimed by Faversham. An afternoon where things did not click and shots were not struck, with the exception of Joe Denny’s first half strike finding the roof of the netting. A near year prior to this October clash was the last encounter between the clubs on the shores of Sussex. Played on The Enclosed Ground’s turf in a season wiped from memory, and indeed record, it was Harding who gave his side a 59th minute lead that was instantly cancelled out by an intuitive Marvin Hamilton backheel in front of 400 pairs of football-desperate eyes. And so the spoils were shared.

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
LAST WEEK, we at NLP Towers received an email from the father of an 11-year-old football enthusiast who has found a passion for Non-League. Young Jack Arnfield had just come back from watching his local team, Stalybridge Celtic take on Northern Premier rivals Workington and had written a report on his visit for us to browse. On reading it, it struck us straight away that enticing the likes of Jack to football at this level is the exact reason that James Doe suggested the idea of a Non-League Day back in 2010. So, with Non-League Day returning after a two-year Covid absence this weekend, what better way to do our bit than to put Jack’s account into the print, making the young man’s day at the same time. “One of the beauties of NonLeague football is that you can hear [witty] conversations all over the ground with rival fans sat so close to each other and no need for away sections,” Jack wrote. “It is sad that 73,000 people
chose to go to Old Trafford but only 400 decided to visit Bower Fold last Saturday. “Only 11 miles separate the two grounds and I wish more people would get down and support teams like Stalybridge Celtic rather than go to Premier League games or worse just watch them on TV. “When you buy a programme or a drink it’s helping that club to survive, it’s not going to some mega-rich person in another country. “All the volunteers that keep clubs running at lower levels deserve our support so get to your local non-league ground on Saturday!” We couldn’t put it better ourselves, Jack! Once again, clubs have been pulling out all the stops in support of Non-League Day, while their big brothers from the Premier League and Championship take the weekend off due to the international break. Ticket offers and often bizarre incentives – free mushrooms at Bungay FC being my particular favourite – are employed to bring in the punters and the
results in previous years have shown to reap rewards with clubs often announcing record crowds. This year is no different with various offers and special events taking place up and down the country. Harrow Borough, for example, have dished out free tickets for their Isthmian Premier Division visit of Bowers & Pitsea to several local schools, and offered halfprice entry for Premier League and EFL season ticket holders, as well as those attending the England v Switzerland game just down the road at Wembley later in the day. It’s free also for Under16s and to NHS and Emergency Service workers and the Armed Forces. The majority of supporters reading this will have already caught the Non-League bug but you too can play your part. By just bringing one friend, work colleague or member of the family you are spreading the word and helping your local football club to become a vital cog in the community wheel. Happy Non-League Day everyone. whitehawk vs faversham town

BAMBA 57’
SATURDAY 26 MARCH 2022 | THE TERRAPURA GROUND | ATT: 613 | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST BY ISAAC GLEAVE
As the 57th minute arrived a stream of blue fury bubbled around The Enclosed Ground. With a rare route to goal Yahaya Bamba accelerates beyond Adam El-Abd, and is hauled down in the box. Before this distinct point to the chalk spot there was little to type, to ponder, to consider. And yet despite the banality that stood before them on the field, the noise still whirled around the beautifully sunlit setting. Noise from all ages, smiles from all sides – this Non-League Day will be remembered for the supporters, for the cackles and for the chants, and for the faces old and new, that will fly high 8

above our home in Whitehawk for the years to follow. You could see it on their bright faces as they flooded the Sea End at the time of kick-off. Basking in the March star above the elements delivered. To match the tempo of the roaring Ultras the Hawks had to implement some zip and zest. Get the ball down, use the wings, spray it across goal. A hint of foreshadowing giving way to that yellow orb spending far too much time in the air, exclaimed every centre-halve, probably. It was attritional, rugged, messy, but that did not matter. As glorious it is to see those red nets bulge to the soundtrack of sweet harmony, there were finer things at hand.
Sevenoaks the opposition, victory for those north-north-west Kent residers would drag them away from the murky darkness of our division. Even after Whitehawk’s recent spate of splendid form there was still a significant task ahead of them. So too for Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke, who after a shoddy back-pass was burdened with the responsibly of thwarting the speedy Freddie Parker. The ol’ one-on-one, Parker beats the one with the gloves and is felled in the process. Goal-kick. Moving swiftly on.
Spring heat, The Oaks’ retreat was not met with enough fury. Conviction lacking, those in the Din with flags swooping from left to right willing their team on. It was not until the 88th minute that bums began to move, hearts started to race. Javaun Splatt slicing an effort wide as it crashes into the advertising hoardings was as close as his side had come.
Then it was El-Abd’s time for redemption. Nosebleed dripping from nostril as he makes camp in the visitors’ box, a slick move ends in And as the interval beckoned with the quench the Egyptian’s right boot smacking the ball for a pint brimming to new extremes the mightily wide when the goal gaped. Stroomberg-Clarke guesses correctly, falling to his right, but the rebound is gobbled up by Bamba, who simply could not miss. Right, substitutions. league REVIEW
BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Hastings Have One Hand On The Title, Whilst Ashford, Cray Valley And Heath Take A Step Nearer The Play Offs Hastings United are fourteen points ahead at the top of the Pitching In Isthmian South East Division with only fifteen left to play for, after they walloped East Grinstead Town whilst nearest rivals Ashford United were held. Hastings were three up on the Wasps after just twenty minutes, with Sam Adams, Danny Parish and Sam Hasler getting the goals. They then coasted until Parish added a fourth twenty minutes from time, and could win the title against Haywards Heath Town on Saturday- although Heath will be no pushovers! The second place Nuts and Bolts were two up and coasting at the break as they welcomed Chichester City, and then conceded two late goals as the visitors roared back to take a point. Gary Lockyer and Thomas Fagg were the architects of Ashford’s first half superiority, but they couldn’t finish off their opponents and were made to sweat when Ethan Pritchard got one back with twenty minutes left. Right at the end Emmett Dunn grabbed an equaliser- and a point- for City. Cray Valley PM travelled to Herne Bay in a play off battle, knowing that defeat could have seen them drop out of the top five. Instead the Millers are up to third, first half goals from Marcel Barrington and Ian Gayle putting them in the driving seat despite the face they’d been down to ten men since the thirteenth minute, when Connor Dymond was dismissed. Bay saw Mobalaji Dawodu get one back with twelve minutes left, but they couldn’t find an equaliser and remain in sixth place, two points behind the top five. Haywards Heath Town are fourth, deepening the Whitstable Town relegation woes with a two-nil win at Hanbury Park. Davigildo Cravid gave them the lead just after the hour, and although Sinn Christie saw red the ten men then got a second, Harry Lafflin scoring on his debut just before the end, to open up a four point gap over Herne Bay in sixth. The Oysters have an entirely different problem, nine points from safety.
time, and made it three defeats in a row in front of a crowd of eight hundred and thirty five as Sittingbourne came to call. The only goal of the game came eight minutes from time, and it went to Daniel Taylor for the Brickies, who are seventh. The Rams slip to fifth, two points clear of local rivals Herne Bay. Burgess Hill Town got back to winning ways at Corinthian, Charlie Kelly getting the only goal of the game ten minutes before the break. The Hillians are eight points behind the top five, their hosts three points further back. VCD Athletic, in tenth, travelled to Lancing. After a goalless first half Kevin Lisbie, now aged forty three but still having no problem remembering where the goal is, put Vickers ahead- but Matt Daniel hit back twelve minutes from time to earn a valuable point for the hosts, who are fourth from bottom. Faversham Town eased any relegation worries by winning for the second time this week, this time recording a three-one win over a Three Bridges, who ended the match with ten men. Marcus Elliott opened the scoring for the Lilywhites after twenty six minutes, and three minutes later it was two-nil, Charlie Dickens meeting the great expectations of the home support. Noel Leighton got one back for Bridges four minutes before the break, but Harry Harding made sure of three points with goal number three for Town just after the hour. Dan Perry saw red late on for the visitors. Sevenoaks Town dragged themselves out of the bottom three with their third win in four matches. They didn’t do Whitehawk’s survival chances any favourites when scoring the only goal of the game at The Enclosed Ground, Yahaya Bamba scoring his third goal from four games twelve minutes after the break. Six hundred and thirteen watched on. The Hawks are now only one point above their visitors. Finally, Phoenix Sports and Hythe Town couldn’t manage a goal, a point which leaves Sports five points from safety and the Cannons two points above the relegation play off place.

OUR VISITORS
WE LOOK AT TONIGHT’S VISITORS TO THE TERRAPURA GROUND Faversham Town play in white shirts with black trim, black shorts with white trim and black socks. Their away kit is blue with white trim.
The Lilywhites lost just three away league games all campaign on their way to finish third and reach the Ryman South play-off final against all odds.
The club’s origins go back to 1884, and they entered the Kent League for the first time a decade later. The club name however was not really consistent, with the team turning out as Faversham Town, Faversham Invicta, Faversham Services, Faversham Railway and Faversham Rangers among others before being disbanded shortly before the Second World War.
However, at Maidstone United’s newly-built Gallagher Stadium in front of a 2,226 strong-crowd, Town were unable to pull off one final upset against a side with huge investment and backing. Maidstone cruising to a 3-0 victory to deny Faversham their first tastes of Ryman Premier League football.
Faversham Town reformed after the war and entered the Kent League in 1947. The club moved to its current home - Salters Lane the following year. Faversham Town had a decent amateur side but found the going tough against some of the professional Kent League clubs. Nevertheless, they won the Kent Amateur Cup in 1957 and 1959. With the Kent League folding in 1959, the club had spells in both the Aetolian and Greater London leagues before rejoining the revived Kent League in 1968. Success soon followed. They were Kent League champions in 1970 and 1971, and lifted the Kent Amateur Cup three years in a row between 1972 and 1974. After a brief flirtation with the Athenian League in the mid seventies, the club returned to the Kent League, winning the Kent Senior Trophy in 1977. The following season they repeated this success and were also crowned Kent League champions, completing a famous “double”. Another significant milestone was reached in 2010 when the revamped stadium was renamed Shepherd Neame Stadium after a sponsorship deal with the town’s famous brewery. Having consolidated their position as a mid-table Ryman South side during the first two years of Turner’s reign, Faversham embarked on one of the best seasons in the club’s history during the 2012/13 season. 20
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Town spent the majority of the 2013/14 campaign just outside the play-offs, and ultimately had to settle for tenth position in their fourth season in the Ryman South. Off the pitch, Town continued to grow with another significant advance. They came together with nearby Faversham Town Youth & Juniors to form a new youth section, meaning boys were now playing in the famous white and black kit from the age of five. The move also created a route through from youth development into the senior side and enabled the newly-expanded club achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club rank, marking their rise in status. The Lilywhites took another step forward in February 2014 with the announcement of an ambitious project to redevelop Shepherd Neame Stadium. The plans - broken down into five phases - include rebuilding the changing rooms, adding hospitality an function rooms, extra seating in the stands and a new stadium entrance. A coffee shop and retail store will then be added, with meeting rooms and offices also being built to bring in additional revenue. A new 120-seater stand, fitness centre and sports hall will also be built. Fundraising for the project then began. Faversham had a productive 2014/15 season, scoring 111 league goals - more than any other Ryman League side that campaign - and amassing a record 97 points to finish in third place in
the Ryman South for the second time in three seasons. But the club suffered more play-off heartache, as they lost 5-4 on penalties at home to Merstham in their Ryman South Play-off Semi-Final following a goalless draw away. Faversham came fifth at the end of the 2015-16 season, again reaching the play-offs, but after beating Dorking Wanderers 2-1 in the semi-final they lost 3-0 to Worthing in the final, leaving them knocking once more on the door of the Ryman Premier Division. The 2016/17 season was one of transition for the Lilywhites on the pitch, and success off it as they forged ahead with Phase One their ambitious rebuilding programme. A tenth place finish was achieved with a young squad as manager Ray Turner dealt with a number of unexpected player departures, which led to a mid-season wobble. However, in May 2017 MP Helen Whately opened the new changing rooms as the first stage of the stadium redevelopment was finally completed. Another significant advance came when, for the first time, the club were able to field Kent Youth League standard squads at every age group from Under 13s upwards in the 2017/18 campaign, a mark of their growing stature in the region and of their commitment to a successful youth policy. In a further development, the Under 21s also switched to become an Under 23 Development team with the aim of helping young players bridge the gap from the Under 18s to the first team. The progress marked the fruition of a vision set out five years earlier by Ray Turner and Head
of Youth Chris Greenfield, who was promoted to Under 23s Manager. In 2018/19, a disappointing start to the season led to Ray Turner stepping aside. Phil Miles and Dan Chapman were appointed as joint managers in his place. The lacklustre season continued, and in the end the team finished 17th, two places and ten points clear of relegation. Towards the end of the season, Paul Gates and Keith Chilvers were appointed joint managers of the renewed Under 23s squad, and senior players were let go in favour of rebuilding the team with a greater emphasis on promoting youth into the first team. After an indifferent start to the 2019/20 season, Town parted company with their joint managers in October. In their place, new manager James Collins brought in assistant Nick Davis and Coach Brad Sandeman. A huge influx of players, coupled with the departure of players including club stalwart Matt Bourne - the club’s record appearance holder - meant that by December a new-look squad was taking to the field and a new era had begun. As the club looked to attract more sponsorship to fund its ambitions, the stadium was renamed Aquatherm Stadium after an agreement with the multinational pipe manufacturers. The curtailed 2020/21 season saw Town finished their six games unbeaten, despite playing all of the promotion favourites, indicating that the club had turned the corner.

HAWKS IN THE COMMUNITY
Formed by volunteers in 2020, AGHAST is a crowdfunded community group set up in response to the development proposals put forward for the Brighton Gasworks site. AGHAST has sought to engage with the council and the developers. AGHAST is a communitydriven campaign, led by volunteers. Despite the restrictions on meetings during the pandemic, they have built platforms to have conversations with the community through social media, email, direct mail and messaging and are in ongoing conversation with interested members of our very mixed neighbourhood (from Roedean Heights to Manor Farm!) 22
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
The website has a wealth of information regarding the concerns about the proposed development, potential alternatives and ways to object to the council and other interested parties. The proposed development will have an impact on the whole area, from Whitehawk to Manor Farm to Roedean Heights. The main concerns are over health and safety. The site is contaminated land; toxic elements (including asbestos, lead and benzo(a) pyrene at high levels) in the soil and groundwater were found in historic soil tests. The Scoping Report states that contaminated dust will become airborne during “remediation” and will fall on the surrounding area for up to 500 metres, which
may be a conservative estimate, given how windy Brighton is. Other concerns are over the lack of affordable and social housing. The developers, St William, have stated that due to the remediating costs, no affordable housing is possible. Furthermore, the proposed 553 flats will be provided with only 160 parking spaces, adding to the strain on an already overburdened local services and infrastructure. See more on the website, including how to get involved and/or object. Remember – it’s your community that will be affected. COYH!

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
