THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk FC for today’s Isthmian League South East fixture with Hythe Town.

to Ross, Tucky and Codge for their hard work and commitment over a difficult season. I’m very disappointed that it just didn’t work out.

It’s a particularly warm welcome to East Brighton Park to officials and fans from the south Kent coast. We enjoyed excellent hospitality at Reachfields on our two visits there this season, with our first match called off late meaning a second trip on a Tuesday night in February. We wish all our visitors a safe journey home.

A big thank you to all those fans who made it through the traffic to reach Whitstable last weekend. Our membership secretary Kay Stringer arrived to catch the last ten minutes – and there was plenty of dark humour about the benefit of not being there to watch the horror show that was the first 45.

The big news of the week has been the appointment of Shaun Saunders as first team manager, and the departure of Ross, Tucky and Codge. Shaun is someone who many of you will know or be aware of, after his success at Peacehaven and more recently Haywards Heath. He’s a local lad, educated at Stanley Deason, who has always harboured an ambition to manage the Hawks. In the Ian Chapman era, Shaun managed our Youth and Vets teams and had a spell with the reserves alongside Nigel Thornton. Shaun is a proven manager who knows what it takes to win this league. Once we’ve got this nightmare season out of the way, we can look forward to a rapid improvement on the pitch. In the meantime, Shaun and the players know they’ve got four cup finals left. I’d like to record my personal thanks

ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE

Saturday brings a new chapter. A new beginning. A new identity. The Shaun Saunders era commences at 3pm on The Enclosed Ground turf as Whitehawk host Hythe Town. 15th v 16th. Separated by goal difference alone, there are few first assignments this demanding, this crucial. Swapping Haywards Heath for East Brighton, the arrival of Saunders follows the departures of Ross Standen, Stuart Tuck and Tony Coade, who all left the club on Monday. A tumultuous campaign plagued with injuries, inconsistencies and introspection, Saunders joins having pulled his previous club into the playoff positions, but parted company with The Blues in January. Now at the Hawks’ helm the hope is for his experience to help guide Whitehawk away from relegation trouble as the season winds to a tense close.

basement club that recorded an impressive 3-0 victory in what would be Standen’s last game in charge. Without a league win since January 3rd, The Oystermen thundered into a three-goal lead before the break. Jack Hanson opened the scoring soon before Charlie Heatley’s penalty doubled the advantage with a mere 18 minutes played. And the most disastrous of halves was assured minutes before the half time whistle blew; Danny Walder rippling the net to secure Whitstable a first three points in 88 days. THE OPPOSITION

LAST TIME OUT

Slide along the Kent coast to discover Saturday’s opponents: Hythe Town. Nothing to separate them in the points column, nothing to separate them in the reverse fixture. The Cannons march to Sussex unbeaten in their previous four, including a triumph over Ashford in the Kent Senior Cup.

It was to the immense frustration of many a travelling supporter that severe traffic delayed their arrival to Whitstable. But upon entering the ground it may have proved a blessing. In a bewildering development on the Kentish shores it was the division’s

Forced to settle for a single point with Lancing last weekend James Rogers’ side are one of a few battling at the bottom of the table, craving maximum points as the congestion continues, panic grows with only four more games on the calendar.

The league’s leakiest defence, it has become more resolute in recent weeks with just three goals conceded in their last four matches. At the other end it has been the boots of Jordan Sarfo and Riley Alford to keep them afloat – entering with a respective seven and six goals on the campaign. PREVIOUS MEETINGS As the days remained bitter and the win drought lengthened into February the Hawks travelled to Hythe’s Reachfields for a frenetic rearranged affair. An open contest with goals aplenty, James Fraser recorded his brace a minute after Tyler Sterling had equalised for the hosts. Time ticked on with Whitehawk seemingly impenetrable … until the dying seconds where an Alford lob stole two points away from Standen’s side as a 2-2 draw was guaranteed. Hythe’s previous excursion to Sussex’s happy place ended in contrasting emotion for the travelling part after a 3-0 defeat. Connor Tighe set the tone as Ahmed Abdulla delivered the decisive doubler soon after the hour-mark, before Rhyle Ovenden secured the points late on. whitehawk vs HYTHE town

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

WHEN I think back to those slightly strange March 2020 days where we knew Covid was about to have a large impact on our every day lives, let alone Non-League football, for some reason The NLP’s National Game Awards stick in the mind.

And we need you! The awards are what they are because of the loyal support of our readers across the country.

We were all set to launch the build-up for the 2019-20 season but, in that ever-changing world, decided at the last minute to press the pause button.

Although date and venue are yet to be confirmed (keep you eyes peeled shortly), we can announce that Buildbase are once again our title sponsor this year, adding The NGAs to their current sponsorship of the FA Vase and FA Trophy.

Let’s see what happens, we thought, and hopefully it won’t be long before we can kick it off. It soon became apparent we wouldn’t be holding the annual event! Eventually we did a virtual awards, while last season we decided not to at all. Although Step 1 completed a season - mostly behind closed doors - of course the majority of Non-League hadn’t played much past October. But, after two disrupted seasons, the finish line is in sight for all. Titles are being won, promotions being decided, and we’re delighted to launch our NGAs again.

So, please, let us know who you think deserves to be honoured in our categories.

We’re hugely grateful for their support and we’re working closely with Buildbase for our much-loved Unsung Hero Award. Pitching In, title sponsors of the Northern Premier, Southern and Isthmian Leagues, are backing our Step 3-4 Player of the Year, while Our Game Football will honour our Player of the Year. Huck Nets have once again put their name to the Goal of the Season accolade, while Reusch are also back — they couldn’t miss the chance to crown the season’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

S&C Slatter return as well and they will once again present the Manager of the Year award while The Acerbis Cup Run of the year is always a hotly contested award. Our friends at Sportsbeat sign up once again – they didn’t need asking twice to support the Young Player of the Year. We love the William Hill Fan of the Year category and again we need your help with this one, while the SK Kits Team of the Year award honours one side for their herculean efforts this season. The FA are supporting the Community Club of the Year, while The NLP Lifetime Achievement award is one of our personal favourites. Football Supporters’ Association Away Day Experience of the year recognises the efforts clubs make to cater for travelling fans. Keep an eye on The NLP over the coming weeks as we bring you award-by-award guides as well as all the information you need to ensure the decanters end up in the right hands!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION. Only this was not quite your standard script. Descending into darkness a quarter of an hour in, those dressed in red and white shifted like ghosts through the gloom as they departed the field. “Just stick another 50p in the meter!”, exclaimed someone, somewhere. Evidently it was just that simple, for not a further fifteen minutes had passed before the brightened blobs had returned to the bulb-lit setting, onto the luscious grass once more. A half of two halves, the surreal opening began with great pace and urgency with Whitehawk banging on the Kentish door, only to be denied 8

by the sinewy instinct of net-tender Kei Plumley. Throwing himself at David Ijaha’s closerange bullet it was the closest any side had came before the blackout. But there were signs of urgency. The Hawks kept their fettle, kept their intensity. Javaun Splatt doing that hypnotic thing on the left-wing that binds the offense. Faversham drowned in the pressure, in the overlaps and in the rhythm laid down by Ross Standen’s squadron. And in the 22nd minute Splatt got his reward. Tinged with a slice of fortune, his bravura touch to tee up Leon Redwood helped connect the move. Then it was all about Splatt. Sprinting, shimmying, shimmering beneath the flickering

rhinestones above as he arrows a drive, low and fierce, into the far corner via the faintest flick of an opposing limb. A rousing swing of the fist and a surge to the sky, it was Whitehawk who struck the first blood of the crisp March evening. Flags flapping gently in the tame breeze, the proverbial cheer from the Din coated the surroundings.

livering a twisting, swirling, spiralling grenade into the area, the Hawks were powerless against the inevitable. Barely over the line the ball drifted, Harry Harding claiming the goal as he sprints and slides on his muddy knees. Scores level. Past the bedtimes of many, this one drew closer to finality as midnight neared with the nighthawks flapping about. Now Lekan Orimolusi was on, patting the palms of Splatt as he drifted off the field.

The Lilywhites offered little other than a few mighty throws from Lewis Chambers. Bombarding the box from the wings, resistance was met in the form of Alex Malins and Henry Running and chasing the ball like an excited Blackmore, the latter filling in for Adam dog, the forward’s presence had given the El-Abd who suffered a not-so-serious back Hawks some breathing space, a route out injury at the weekend. of exile. league REVIEW

BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Whilst the battle for the play off’s- and against relegation- takes new twists and turns.

five, so will take positives from the match despite not getting a particular positive result.

Barring a shock of enormous proportions, Hastings United will soon be lifting the Pitching In Isthmian South East trophy- but they couldn’t do it this weekend, as Haywards Heath Town frustrated the majority of the THREE THOUSAND AND EIGHTY TWO watching on at Pilot Field. United are twelve points clear with four matches remaining, and have a vastly superior goal difference, so second place Ashford United probably have more chance of winning the lottery tonight than catching them, but a goalless draw was more important to Heath than Hastings. Heath remain fourth, but none of the sides below them in the play off chase could win either!

Sittingbourne and relegation-threatened East Grinstead Town also failed to find a goal between them, a result which leaves the Wasps third from bottom and sees the Brickies close to within seven points of the top five- but with only four games left that gap might prove insurmountable.

Hastings will lift the title if they avoid defeat at Faversham Town next weekend.

We had a midtable battle between sides in green, as Chichester City welcomed Corinthian. It turned out that City were rather too welcoming, as the visitors ran in three goals without reply. Jack Mahoney put Corinthian ahead just before the break, and an own goal made it two nil with twenty three minutes remaining. Any chance of a home comeback evaporated when Lloyd Rowlatt was dismissed, and Emmanual Oloyede added a third just before the end.

Ashford United travelled to VCD Athletic. The Nuts and Bolts hadn’t won any of their last three matches and were beginning to look nervously over their shoulders, but they opened the scoring in this one, Luke Burdon giving them a lead in the thirty seventh minute which they couldn’t hold onto until half time, Youseff Bamba equalising just before the break. The match remained tied into the last quarter hour, at which point the visitors took control, Burdon adding a second and Gary Lockyer making it three-one, opening up an eight point gap over sixth place Herne Bay.

Three Bridges welcomed our Pitching In Performance of the Month winners, Phoenix Sports. Sports had a five point gap between themselves and safety, although they’d lost only one of their last four- and another victory at Jubilee Field closed the gap to three points. A Roberto Ratti hat trick gave them a three goal advantage on fifty two minutes, and although Bridges made the last ten minutes interesting by pulling two goals back, Ryan Brackpool and Bryan Villavicencio with those, Sports held on for a crucial victory which keeps their escape chances alive.

Cray Valley PM, a point behind the Nuts and Bolts at start of play, hosted another set of promotion-chasers, Ramsgate. The Millers had defeated two of their promotion rivals in their last two matches, and were hoping for a hat trick, and they certainly got one! It was three-nil at half time, Marcel Barrington, Denzel Gayle- his fiftieth for the club- and Hassan Ibrahiym with the goals, and although Joshua Ajayi got one back for the Rams, Anthony Edgar made it four-one eight minutes from time. The Rams will be delighted that Herne Bay didn’t take advantage, but with four consecutive defeats they need to find form again fast if they are to hold on to fifth place.

Sevenoaks Town had three wins and a draw from their last five matches, but that only gave them a point’s worth of breathing space over the bottom three and they needed to extend that- and they did so in style. Freddie Parker scored on twenty six and twenty eight minutes, and Yahaya Bamba made it three before the break. On fifty seven minutes Emmanuel Oluwasemo got one back for the Lilywhites, but that was that.

Herne Bay were on the road to Mid Sussex- Wivelsfield, if you’re travelling by train- as they faced Burgess Hill Town. Neither side could manage a winor a goal- but Bay closed to within a point of the top

Bottom side Whitstable Town haven’t given up the fight just yet, and welcomed another of the struggling sides, Whitehawk. The Hawks started the day three points above the danger zone, and three was also an important number at half time in this one, as that was how many the Oysters scored before the break! Jack Hanson, Charlie Heatley and Danny Walder did the damage. whitehawk vs HYTHE town

HAWKS IN THE COMMUNITY

Formed by volunteers in 2020, AGHAST is a crowdfunded community group set up in response to the development proposals put forward for the Brighton Gasworks site. AGHAST has sought to engage with the council and the developers. AGHAST is a communitydriven campaign, led by volunteers. Despite the restrictions on meetings during the pandemic, they have built platforms to have conversations with the community through social media, email, direct mail and messaging and are in ongoing conversation with interested members of our very mixed neighbourhood (from Roedean Heights to Manor Farm!) 22

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

The website has a wealth of information regarding the concerns about the proposed development, potential alternatives and ways to object to the council and other interested parties. The proposed development will have an impact on the whole area, from Whitehawk to Manor Farm to Roedean Heights. The main concerns are over health and safety. The site is contaminated land; toxic elements (including asbestos, lead and benzo(a) pyrene at high levels) in the soil and groundwater were found in historic soil tests. The Scoping Report states that contaminated dust will become airborne during “remediation” and will fall on the surrounding area for up to 500 metres, which

may be a conservative estimate, given how windy Brighton is. Other concerns are over the lack of affordable and social housing. The developers, St William, have stated that due to the remediating costs, no affordable housing is possible. Furthermore, the proposed 553 flats will be provided with only 160 parking spaces, adding to the strain on an already overburdened local services and infrastructure. See more on the website, including how to get involved and/or object. Remember – it’s your community that will be affected. COYH!

Hailing from the island-city of Portsmouth, today’s mascot Joseph Gerald Glover, has always been a man in demand and happy to take centre stage. However, early on it was clear that growing up in the most densely populated city in the UK was never going to satisfy the man that likes to stand out in a crowd. After relations broke down with the city council over the decision to erect the Spinnaker Tower instead of a 500ft bronze sculpture of himself, Mr. Glover Lover found a new home further along the South coast in Brighton & Hove. Here his performances on the football pitch as a striker leading the line have never been in doubt, and like his pet cat Audrey, he demands to be ‘fed’. While this hasn’t always correlated with an uptake in goals - his failure to find the target at all, in a full 10-week season for the Cosmic Trotters 6 aside team will attest - he will be the first man to tell you that a striker is only as good as the service he receives.

do worse than turn to Joe Glover & The Sex Machines, for the post-match musical accompaniment. Carrying a funky vibe with charisma and animal magnetism, they should whip the crowd into a state of rapture with fans lurching all the way back through East Brighton Park.

While Whitehawk would be wise to call on his striking prowess to put today’s opponents Hythe Town to the sword, they could also

So whether it’s the football or microphone that trigger his artistic genius today, sit back, indulge, and Smell The Glove!

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
