THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk FC for today’s home game with Ramsgate. It’s a particularly warm welcome to East Brighton Park to officials and fans from the east Kent coast. We enjoyed excellent hospitality at the newly developed Southwood Stadium in November and wish all our visitors a safe journey home. The Rams are enjoying a very good season, playing home games on their new artificial surface. Were really struck by the hundreds of young footballers and families who were at the ground for a morning’s football, as the new stadium has quickly become a real community focus. The Rams have just signed one of our former players Eze Ebuzoeme, who appeared briefly for the Hawks in our ill-fated single season in the Isthmian Premier League in 2019. Very well done to the 25 fans who went to VCD last weekend and enjoyed the dramatic end of our 98-day wait for a win. Real fans stick with their own team

through thick and thin. Anyone can enjoy the good times but the real test of whether you can keep a sense of proportion over what’s happening on a football field is when something goes wrong – or keeps going wrong. Everyone is suddenly a football expert when your team loses or keeps drawing games when we should be winning. Despite the disappointment that people must feel, there is no excuse for so-called fans, generally fuelled by a few pints, to shriek abuse at players, match officials or volunteers. It’s embarrassing for the individuals concerned and for our club. We need everyone pulling together in the same direction, not turning inward, and looking for someone to blame. So once more, I urge you to stay safe, try your best to enjoy the match and get right behind both the management and players, as we seek another vital three points today. Andy Schofield

ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE

There’s reason to be sparkling: the bright star above gently warms the faces of those below, Brighton’s beaches are littered with folk soaking in that vitamin D, and Whitehawk return to The Enclosed Ground with an unwieldy weight lifted off their red shoulders. Oh yes, the tops are off; the Hawks are back. 98 days. For a smidgen over three months had the words ‘Whitehawk’ and ‘win’ not been used in the same sentence. A prolonged Brighton-esque points drought with games of all proportion; all confusion, it ultimately ended in a fashion so distinctly memorable for the impassioned Hawks flailing their arms behind the goal. Breathe that sigh of relief. It’s time for a repeat. LAST TIME OUT Without victory in thirteen attempts, it was beneath a setting south-east London sun that something special on show. A second half of pure emotion, wonderful drama no renowned playwright could ever conjure, the smiles would soon be flowing. But the hosts in VCD Athletic would dominate the opening half. Timeless

classic Kevin Lisbie’s ravenous movement proved too much as he found the net shortly before the interval. As time progressed the game opened up. The Hawks found their equaliser through Ashley Wadhams, steering his left-footed effort over the line. And with five minutes remaining the turnaround was complete: Omarr Lawson thumping a low drive into the corner from just outside the box. Breathless. Yet still there many a twist left. Jeff Duah-Kessie caressed the ball beyond Nathan StroombergClarke to make it 2-2, before a fine Splatt header sent his visiting side into late raptures. You just had to be there. THE OPPOSITION It’s easy to get a little carried away in moments such as these, but one mustn’t forget the imminent challenge that Ramsgate pose to the Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Sitting ever so dashingly in third place, likely to be one of the four sides competing in this year’s playoffs, they were dealt a surprising blow in midweek as Corinthian slipped away from Thanet 3-1 victors.

The lone Ram on the scoresheet for the twentieth occasion this campaign was Joshua Ajayi, fizzing one in to equalise just before the half-hour mark. The forward leads the league in goals scored, proving to be the catalyst for his side’s fine record in front of net. Their recent defeat ended a run of three consecutive wins as they journey to the Sussex coast with the hope of returning to winning ways. PREVIOUS MEETING On a bitter afternoon in dying days of November Ross Standen’s side made the long trip to Ramsgate where defeat met them in the eyes. A slick move concluded with a glossy Omarr Lawson drive to catapult the Hawks in front, but two swift goals combined with an Ajayi penalty to round of a disappointing day. It was a similar scoreline the last time Ramsgate played under the lights of The Enclosed Ground, but Whitehawk would be the ones victorious through a Lucas Rodrigues brace and a vintage Kacper Lopata bullet drive.

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

WE HAD a bit of a novelty for last Sunday’s NLP – for the first time since 2019, we were able to feature a team from outside of the National League celebrating a title. For those who missed it, Macclesfield FC – formed from the ashes of Macclesfield Town – have won the North West Counties League Premier Division title at the first time of asking and booked their place at Step 4 next season. Over the coming weeks there will be plenty more promotion celebrations across the country and, of course, some less exuberant scenes that follow relegation. Promotion and relegation is vital to the flow of the National League System and it’s so good to have it back again. There were times this season where we perhaps feared we could be heading for a third disrupted campaign. But thankfully that hasn’t materialised and we’re now on the home straight. Last summer there was some

movement in the NLS with the elevation of clubs to help reshape the Pyramid – everyone will be glad to see it happen on the pitch this season. It’s been two years since the final round of games of 201920 before the country went into lockdown and the season was halted. Flicking back through that edition of The NLP, there is a strong sense everyone knew what was coming – albeit perhaps not to the extent it turned out to be. But among the worry and fears of Covid, there were still the words and pictures of teams striving to get over the line. All in vain. That won’t be the case this time. So Macc are up and there will be more soon. Banbury United and Bracknell Town to name two are inching closer to the finish line, as are Worthing in the Isthmian Premier. Other promotion races look set to go down to the wire with a chunk of points still to play for deciding who will be crowned champions and who will reach the play-offs.

At the other end of the tables there is going to be some real intrigue with the Inter-Step play-offs that will see runners-up at Step 5 get a shot at promotion in one-off games against Step 4 strugglers. It’s a new element to add to the season and we’ll all watch with interest as to how it pans out and how fans take to the format. The last two years has seen a Non-League emerge from the pandemic with real credit. Crowds are booming at all levels, many people seem to have been awakened to this level of the game and the appetite for local football growing. Non-League Day on Saturday, March 26 will be the perfect celebration of everything we love about Non-League football. And it will also be another crucial weekend in the ebb and flow of a football season. It’s great to have it all to look forward to again.

SATURDAY 12 MARCH 2022 | OAKWOOD | ATT: 101 | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST BY ISAAC GLEAVE Ring the bells. Samba in the saloons. Clank those pints. Whitehawk are winners! Spring has sprung, and so too has Javaun Splatt, moving to meet Harry Reed’s heavenly delivery at the death to send the travelling Hawks into an iridescent sea of rapture. Full of smiles, full of relief. Oh, how marvellous it feels to parade down the streets — red flags flapping high in the breeze — serenading the passers-by with songs of the richest Sussex notes. Pride upon people. This is a day to rejoice. But rewind to the early afternoon, where the travelling contingent set their sights upon south-east London under a pleasant sun. Clouds like blades shaped the scattered sky above as the warmth trickled down intermittently. In the direction of the capital they vamoosed, soothing the scars of a winless 98 days. Sauntering down the initial slope to the immaculate turf, as if each blade of grass itself were individually 8

scissored. A late injury to Henry Blackmore means he’s scratched from the lineup. Terese Mthunzi shimmies into the defence as the returning Jamie Splatt found himself in a midfield devoid of Henry Muggeridge, but spirited by the return of Omarr Lawson. Out they strode onto the green carpet. Studs slowly sinking in the turf, the side dressed in the familiar blue were first to bring either goalkeeper sprawling. That is, when Lawson’s left-footed punch sent Sam Mott stumbling on his line, pawing away the strong effort to safety. In the upmost truth the opening half belonged to the hosts. 8th they stood prior to commencement, and their modest value showed through the evergreen enchanter Kevin Lisbie. Yes, Premier League experience graced the Oakwood surface with those hypnotic runs and rhythmic advances. Even at the age of 43. Speedily he was in the mood. Playing off the

shoulder, winning headers, spraying the ball to the respective wings. Whitehawk’s defence puffing with hands locked into the hips at the rousing pace of The Vickers’ attack. There’s justification for them being the league’s fifth-highest scorers. And after Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke had dramatically denied raging smacks from Youssef Bamba and Courtney Barrington, the clean-sheet vanished in one beat of the red heart. Lisbie’s ingenuity saw him race in front of his defender, whilst his calmness allowed for him to poke the ball beyond Stroomberg-Clarke and into the sharp-netting behind. It was coming. Whitehawk were slow in moving the ball and quick to lose it. In the final third they posed few issues. Perhaps that is what instilled an air of complacency amongst VCD’s defenders. Complacency oozing into the sweaty skins under a springtime sun. The forty-five minutes that followed would be indistinguishable from the former. Rays still beating down, travelling Hawks perennially positive behind the attacking goal. The referee’s whistle marked the dawn of Whitehawk’s resurrection. In fashion desperately typical of Ross Standen’s side Jamie Splatt fell to the floor in a heap, clutching his leg. Swiftly whisked off in place of debutant Ashley Wadhams, who was finally able to kick a ball in a Whitehawk jersey, it was he who clawed his side back into the battle. There was a tinge more zest about the visitor’s intent. Pushed higher up the field, VCD’s full-backs began to feel the heat. First it was the attacking Splatt, then it was Peter Gregory. For every inch they fought, punishing their opponents, and equalising on the hour-mark.

storm finally giving way to skies of the purest promise? Not just yet. For there was to be further twists in this enthralling, breathless tale. For Jeff Duah-Kessie would be jogging back to the centre-circle, ball in hand, having just effortlessly levelled the scores from inside Stroomberg-Clarke’s area. Caressing the ball over a desperate defence onto the chest of the forward, he was presented with far too much time to prod the ball through the current incumbent of the #1 jersey. Draining. Non-League football at its glistering best. Tied once more, the climax neared with each fleeting zeptosecond. That time had arrived. At the subsequent blow of the referee’s whistle the life had not been sucked from the Hawk. Reed spots space in the VCD midfield to drive into the final third. Skipping past legs and bodies, he caught sight of an advancing Splatt and delivered an exquisitely floated pass onto his head. Time seemed to stop for a split second. As if in some wondrous dream Splatt’s header angled toward the opposite corner, slipping away from Mott’s presence before nestling beautifully in the net. Like a bird soaring celestially in the clouds Splatt raced to the sideline with arms to either side, embracing his fans, embracing his family. Victory was assured. How pleasing it is to type those words. On grounds near and far, the recent three months have been an exhausting rollercoaster of emotions and frustration. They say it only takes a bit of luck. But in the inner layers of the M25 this was no fluke. This was a story of resilience, of virtue and, above all else in this cruel, unforgiving world, of a spirit akin to so few clubs.

Oblivious to Wadhams‘ whereabouts the left-sided substitute floated into space at the back post, steering a delicate Gregory cross past Mott for Splatt to crash it home. Splatt offside, but the ball had already crossed the line. Thank God. Whitehawk level. But this war was far from settled. Racing seamlessly through the gears it welcomed Dan Thompson on in place of James Fraser. Legs fresh, mouths frothing, Hawks purring. They sniffed a second. Their reward would soon arrive. Five minutes were all that remained when the turnaround was complete. Thompson involved, his awareness and calmness combined to feed the lurking Omarr Lawson on the edge of the box. A fine touch to set, and a finish to match: a thumping low-drive away from Mott’s palm and into the corner sent those behind with arms outstretched, eyes wide-open. league REVIEW

BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Leaders Hastings United saw their title credentials face a severe test, as they travelled to face Cray Valley PM, but they came through it after a battle at the Artic Stadium. Ali Tumkaya gave the Millers a first half lead, and they held on to it until just after the hour, when an own goal drew the visitors level. Fourteen minutes from time Jack Dixon made it two-one to United, and they held out to go ten points clear. Ashford United looked to be the only side likely to have the chance to challenge Hastings for automatic promotion, but that now looks even less likely, as strugglers Phoenix Sports left Homelands with all the points. A goal in each half for the visitors, Malaki Toussaint after a quarter of an hour and Byron Walker with twenty minutes left, did Sports chances of escaping the bottom two a power of good. They are now just a point behind third bottom Sevenoaks Town and three behind seventeenth place Three Bridges. Ramsgate welcomed Lancing to Southwood, but weren’t all that welcoming, scoring four goals without reply. Ashley Miller got the first two, and then right at the end Oliver Bate made it three, and Bobby Dunn got the fourth. The Rams are twelve points behind Hastings, but only two behind the Nuts and Bolts- and have a game in hand. Haywards Heath Town climbed to fourth with victory over Hythe Town. The game at reachfields had just one goal, and it went to Tom Cadman, ten minutes before the break. Herne Bay hosted a Kent derby as Faversham Town came to call. Bay have found form difficult to come by at perhaps the worst time, only winning three of their last ten, and yet have had moments where they have been very good indeed- and they had another of those today, moving to within two points of fifth place Cray Valley.

their last six, and it didn’t speed up much against Whitstable Town, neither side managing a goal. VCD Athletic welcomed relegation-threatened Whitehawk, but you wouldn’t have known the Hawks were in trouble as they emerged three-two winners. The Hawks were without a win in ten matches, and fell behind to a Kevin Lisbie effort on thirty seven minutes, but drew level just after the hour, Ashley Wadhams with the equaliser. Omarr Lawson then gave the Hawks the lead with five minutes to go, only to see Jeff Duah-Kessie equalise almost immediately. The winner came with one minute to go, Splatt getting his second and seeing his side climb to fourteenth. Sittingbourne travelled to face one of our form sides, Three Bridges. The two had already met twice, in league and cup, and had only been separated by a penalty shootout- and still that statistic remains after Kane Rowland got an eighty ninth minute equaliser. Charlie Lambert had earlier opened the score for Bridges, a lead they held for seventy five minutes. Chichester City welcomed a resurgent Sevenoaks Town, but they were less resurgent after Josh Clack got the only goal of the game. It came after only nine minutes, and it sees City end the day in tenth place. East Grinstead Town travelled to Corinthian without a win in six, with one point from the eighteen available, and having with every defeat coming without them scoring a goal. They did get a goal this time, the opener- Kie Douglas scoring it- but it didn’t help much as their hosts hit back to score three. Lekan Majoyegbe equalised on twenty five minutes, and after the break Harvey Smith stuck two fingers up at the visitors by scoring two goals.

Both goals came after the break, Dan Johnson with the first on fifty seven minutes, Rory Smith with the second seventeen minutes from time. Burgess Hill Town have seen their promotion charge slow down a little, the Hillians having lost four of whitehawk vs RAMSGATE FC

THE ONLINE PROGRAMME BY STUART FULLER

Over the past few months, the future of the humble football programme has been front and centre after a decision was taken by the EFL clubs that it was no longer mandatory to produce one for each and every game. There can be no doubt that the original purpose of the programme to educate and inform fans about what was going on at the club, who the opposition were and a vehicle to promote commercial partners. Today, our instant-on digital world means most of the content in the programme is out of date as soon as it is printed, with most fans attending a game having access to significantly more up-to-date information in the palm of their hands. Football fans want more today than just a memento of a game attended. On the most part they want content that is up to date and informative, adding value to their match day experience. Further down the leagues, the question of “to publish or not” comes down to money, or more than often, the lack of it. Few clubs can say that they make money on producing and selling a programme today, unless they are simply creating the bare minimum, printing in-house on a black and white photocopier. The programme is a conundrum for clubs at the Non-League level. On one hand, it is a valuable tool to get information over to the fans, whilst on the other it is a commercial vehicle for the club to sell advertising space. Unfortunately, whilst the commercial manager may be happy at selling 20 pages of ads, the reader wants to see editorial and content not ads. So, they won’t buy it and because they don’t buy it, the

22

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

appeal to the advertiser falls over time. An inverse catch 22. From experience, we have taken great pride in our match day programme, inviting a wide breadth of writers to produce unique and varied content coupled with some excellent match images. Our style and quality of content hasn’t changed much over the past few years, yet the number of copies we sell per game has slowly reduced despite attendances rising by nearly 25% over the last three seasons. We have traditionally sold 1 programme for every 4 attendees. On an average match-day we print 200 copies, 50 of which are used for players, management, guests and officials. The other 150, in most instances sell, at £2 a copy. Multiply that by 21 league games and the £6,300 is a very useful revenue stream. In addition, we have produced an online version, made available to anyone, 24 hours after the game. With over 700 owners living outside of the East Sussex catchment area, we have seen on average an additional 150 views of this. Of course, some of those who previously bought a programme could be now viewing the free online version, thus cannibalising our own sales but likewise, one of the appeals of the online programme is allowing those fans who cannot get to games to access the content. In most instances a programme for a Saturday game goes to print after a thorough edit on a Thursday at the very latest, which means that two whole days of footballing news, views and scandal can break before the programme is printed. We all want to consume our news now – this is the prime reason why traditional hard-copy newspaper circulation has fallen so dramatically and a match programme often con-

tains nothing new to the reader. To many fans, buying a programme is seen as an essential part of going to a game. But like every other element of the game, it needs to get with the times. This is why from the start of the 2018/19 season, Lewes FC will not be publishing a matchday programme. Instead, we will be producing a ground-breaking matchday publication in the form of an e-programme. As soon as fans enter The Dripping Pan on a matchday they will be able to access the digital content, which will include the traditional elements such as a preview of our opponents, match reviews, details of forthcoming away trips and information on what is going on at the club. However, we will be mixing this text-based content with video interviews from our management team, players and the Chairman, previews recorded by visiting fans, and much more. We know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but Lewes have always been about innovation and pushing the envelope for football clubs everywhere. We believe we will be the only club to do this in England and whilst we will be reducing some of our operational costs, we will hopefully be setting the standard for the future of the football programme. The e-programme opens up a whole new world of opportunities, not only for the club but also for the reader. I’m not a traditionalist but likewise I understand the place for the humble football programme and those who will rally against embracing the digital age. Technology can deliver reduce costs, increased revenues and a wider readership for every club, big or small. But are we ready and brave enough to embrace it? We think so but don’t just take my word for it, have a look yourself.

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
