THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk Football Club for today’s home game with Chichester City. It’s a particularly warm welcome to East Brighton Park to the officials and supporters from West Sussex, who haven’t played here since 2009. A special welcome too for any dogs who have ventured forth today. We have a long history with Chichester City, who we first met in the Sussex County League in 1952 and who first played on this ground in 1955. Our Sussex County Cup clash at Oaklands Park earlier in the season was the 100th meeting between the two sides. Only two have ended in goalless draws and there have been some very competitive, as well as memorable high scoring encounters, notably two 7-3 home wins for the Hawks in the late 50s and a 5-2 home win in the FA Cup in 1992, It was great to see so many Hawks fans at Lancing last weekend, even if the performance didn’t live up to expectations. The crowd included a group of former players: Colin Banks, John Ansbro, Dick Watts, Ray Allcorn and Brendan Quirke. The draconian rules on musical instruments and four-legged friends failed to dampen the spirits and we

were finally rewarded with Ollie Munt’s first ever goal for the club, to rescue a point in the 96th minute. Enough words have already been shared on our previous home game against Three Bridges, but none as eloquent and unique as the musings of Isaac Gleave and Stephen Wrench. Isaac has now taken over from Adam Hart as Hawks Head of Media and is surely a budding national sportswriter in waiting. Talking of media, this programme is no longer being issued in printed form, as we have had to succumb to the economic reality that we just don’t sell enough of them to justify the printing cost. Lots of clubs have gone down this same route, for a variety of reasons, and for us it may open up real possibilities for something more creative on-line. As the club’s historian and collector of programmes going back to our early days, I am very disappointed it has come to this. Your support can make all the difference, especially when not everything is going our way, so please stay safe, enjoy the match and get right behind the management and team.

ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE What’s it going to be then, eh? The reminders of a dreary past filter through into the amygdala as we read the name of Saturday’s opponents: Chichester City. Yes, the very same Chichester that slipped six past your humble Whitehawk back in September before dumping us out of the Sussex Senior Cup in the dying minutes of additional time. Ah yes, that’s the one. Oaklands Park has not been kind to Ross Standen’s side this year. Call it a graveyard ground, call it whatever negative adjective under this very yellow sun and even darker sky. Ever since that miserable late Summer evening the travelling Hawks party have looked for this fixture, to avenge the memories that can so simply and swiftly be rectified. LAST TIME OUT It was a trip to Lancing, wahoo! New ground alert for many a traveller, the support was one of wonder and gorgeosity personified. Lining the bank behind Alieu Secka’s goal, they journeyed along the coast to witness Ollie Munt’s first competitive goal in the depths of the wintry air. From the spot it was, James Fraser was clattered by Secka late on in the box. Whistle, point, penalty, composure: the

sheer cheek of it, Munt lifted the ball high into the middle of the netting after a lengthy stoppage to rescue a deserved point for Whitehawk. It cancelled out Lorenzo Lewis’ first half fizzer from 20 yards as the Hawks recorded their first league goal in little over 360 minutes of Isthmian football. Up with the whistle, away with the roars as those from Brighton shimmied on home with mighty grins on their cold faces. Well, most of them did anyway. THE OPPOSITION Right … the aforementioned Chichester City, the Lilywhites of West Sussex, the green beacon for this proud county. The side squished between Sittingbourne and Burgess Hill, they occupy that secure ninth position. Eight points off the play-offs, that faint flicker of hope remains for Miles Rutherford’s cohort after a slim 1-0 victory over Three Bridges last weekend. But they arrive deprived of rest. The 125 inside the revered Oakland’s Park watched on as Folkestone Invicta knocked the Lilywhites out of the Velocity Trophy courtesy of five second half visiting goals. 5-3 the final scoreline, the Senior Cup their last opportunity for some glossy silverware.

Goals have, as we know, been flowing on regular occurrence with Callum Overton’s eight leading the pack, two of which were recorded in that infamous 6-1 affair. Second in the list is Ethan Pritchard: five goals this campaign, scoring a brace in a similarly ruthless 5-1 win home over Faversham Town prior to the recent festivities. Yeah, they are rather potent on familiar turf. PREVIOUS MEETINGS So, here we go. The air was warm and the football was, hmm, abject – from a Whitehawk point of view, at least. A shaky start to the season was encapsulated by the first six minutes of this contest: Overton with two inside the opening six minutes, Javaun Splatt’s ensuing spot-kick was responded with a further three home goals before the interval. And then Tyrone Madhani placed the rosy cherry atop the sugary icing, rippling the net for his side’s sixth. But wait, there’s more. Not so far back in the calendar Standen and his battalion made another trip to this cathedral city for a spot of Senior Cup action. Again, it was not to be. It was goalless and rather drab until Emmet Dunn’s extra-time arrow-like finish condemned the Hawks to another loss. Think it might be time for some renewed positivity… whitehawk vs CHICHESTER CITY

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

THE PHRASE ‘magic of the cup’ is synonymous with the FA Cup’s early rounds but in recent weeks it has been used alongside the FA Trophy. The competition for the top four tiers of Non-League football is now entering the last 16 and those clubs will be starting to dream of the Wembley final in May. While some National League sides may devalue the Trophy in place of league success and promotion to the Football League, the knock-out competition, which has been played since 1969, provides a valuable opportunity to lower-league clubs. Just look what it meant for Needham Market last weekend winning a dramatic penalty shootout 8-7 at top-flight Yeovil Town, who have created plenty of their own cup history. Market boss Kevin Horlock described it as a ‘special day’ for the Step 3 side. Elsewhere, Cheshunt, also playing at the same level as Needham, won 3-0 at National League South club St Albans City while Morpeth Town came out on the right side of a seven-goal thriller against Step 2 Boston United, winning 4-3. Tonbridge Angels upset National League King’s Lynn Town too.

And it’s not even the victories that can provide memories. Larkhall Athletic, of the Southern League Division One South, enjoyed a trip to National League high-flyers Stockport County on Saturday. It was the furthest the club had been in the competition and they made sure to make the most of it by staying over on the Friday night AND Saturday to enjoy themselves postmatch. The Larks supporters travelled well too with 169 in attendance at Edgeley Park. Larkhall manager Ollie Price, no stranger to a big cup tie having played against Norwich City in a televised FA Cup first round game for Paulton Rovers, told The NLP of the club’s excitement before the Stockport fixture. “It’s an absolutely incredible draw, it’ll be a fantastic day for the club and everyone connected,” he said.

Some supporters may say the final should be held at a smaller, more intimate ground but speak to any manager or player and they will say they want to be walking out under the arch. We’ve been treated to so many great finals over the years, not least most recently when Step 3 Hornchurch beat Hereford. It’s given many clubs from the same level hope they can go all the way too. Brackley Town’s penalty victory over Bromley was also dramatic, so too was North Ferriby United’s upset of Wrexham in 2015. The memories go on and on. So, the Trophy is still special, still ‘magic’ and it was a pleasure to have Needham Market’s upset taking centre-stage on our front page last weekend – sorry Yeovil fans, you had your turn last month in the FA Cup!

“This is what it’s all about. I know they say the magic of the FA Cup but this is the magic of the Trophy!” The FA Trophy is made extra special by the FA’s persistence to play the final at Wembley on Non-League Finals Day, also featuring the FA Vase which always delivers a brilliant spectacle – the last six finals have produced 24 goals between them!

WHITEHAWK

LEWIS 30’; MUNT 90 (PEN)’.

SATURDAY 15 JANUARY 2022 | CULVER ROAD | ATT: 370 | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST BY ISAAC GLEAVE There was a slight feeling of discontent in the crisp Lancing air as the clock struck 5pm. Close to 360 scoreless minutes had passed before Ollie Munt placed the ball delicately on the white spot, hands on hips, shaking off the stress with a penalty so cool his blood turned to ice. Indeed for the many from Whitehawk who witnessed with their eyes wide open, bodies frozen, it was a moment of relief, minds at peace. But that longing sensation for more remained: it had not been a fine performance, yet through perseverance and a wounded few a point was rescued in the finale. Contrasting to the reverse encounter this one was a shivery occasion. Not through sheer excitement, rather the falling degrees that made the teeth chatter, breath visible as the away procession rolled in close to the commencement. A marvellous sight behind Alieu Secka’s goal: flags draped over the local 8

advertisement, familiar faces with great big smiles squished closely together as the noise reached nearby Shoreham. Grey are the clouds above in quintessentially British fashion, they looked down upon two new additions — Stacey Freeman and Lekan Orimolusi — as Ross Standen opted for four changes to his side’s previous, infamous, ‘game’. Slipping smoothly into their positions went the players of red and yellow. Any fears of a kit-clash alleviated as they surfaced from the darkness, it was our nearest neighbours who got things underway by immediately losing possession. The Lancers had not tasted victory at home since October 2, The Hawks had failed to find the net in their last three matches. All the hallmarks of a Sussex thriller, the hosts began at a mechanical pace, roving in numbers and seeping with confidence. Lorenzo Lewis’ flair and speed diagnosed Declan Kama with

reoccurring headaches as he flashed one invitingly across the face of Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke’s goal, but to avail it was not. Too many lazy passes, too many sleeping Hawks. Reducing the fluidity and optimism with each fleeting phase of play, the torpid travellers were awoken by a chance. Nothing to dance about, but a brief instant of hope: Tegan Freeman nodding a header gently over the crossbar. Things were just starting to appear encouraging for Whitehawk as Omarr Lawson saw more of the ball, Peter Gregory causing the odd issue here, there, then here again. But shut off, and pay the penalty. Not that it was from the spot, yet, as the slippery Lewis slammed the ball beyond Stroomberg-Clarke’s arm from 20 yards like an archer nailing his target. Arrowed as sweet as a grandparent’s Victoria sponge this was one of those ‘yeah, fair enough’ kind of strikes.

Admittedly the football was not quite electric. It had its moments, and so did Splatt – oh, the agony. This is where he thrives. Dancing on the left, jinking this way and that, leaving his defenders in a cloud of rubber pellets as he paces at goal, angle acute, Secka onrushing, wide of the far-post it’s sent. Undervalued goalkeeping, Secka had kept his side in the lead without even deflecting the football. One final change: Orimolusi on, Henry Muggeridge off. Standen’s final roll of the red dice. No snake eyes here. Whitehawk had conjured a way back into this one. The ninety looming. Well into the denouement now, Splatt swings in a hopeful cross for Fraser who climbs highest…quickest…heading over the bar as he is clattered by Secka. In a heap they lie on the ground.

Were Lancing deserving of this first half lead? Yes, yes they were. Hungrier, shaper, fitter; the home midfield were moving the ball quickly, both short and far, to areas that put Adam El-Abd and co. under pressure.

A nasty collision. Seconds pass with most assuming it’s a corner. Whistle blown, finger pointed, penalty awarded. The one’s sporting yellow incandescent at the referee, the decision stayed as Secka remained on the ground.

Not that the Hawks’ guarder of the net was often troubled, it was that in the opposing goal Secka could have been out doing his weekly shop, and still would have kept a clean sheet. Strengthened by Alex Laing who, with the time nearing that of the temporary curtain drop, hooked a tangential effort wide of the right-upright. And there was the whistle. Those on the field disappeared down the tunnel, those in the stands disappeared into the bar. Pint, anyone?

Minutes past and he was back to his feet, just, and now tasked with saving a penalty. All this time of waiting around, Munt did not move. Now it was time. Those nervous supporters behind willing him on, the unflappable midfielder calmest of them all. Straight down the middle it was lifted, nestling into the goal as Secka sprung to his left. A first competitive goal for the fledgling talent.

Once sufficiently guzzled they returned to a darkened setting. Naturally, of course, it being Winter and all that. But the unique-looking floodlights had been switched on, thankfully, as both those in shorts and long socks joined their coated supporters in finding their respective positions. The engine remained stalled, a threat was rarely posed by either side. Lancing unsurprisingly content in holding on for a precious three points, they turned down the offensive volume as Standen too turned around, looked to his bench, and sent on his attacking weapons in James Fraser and Munt.

Jubilation! The Hawks behind dancing with grins, now into the additional minutes as Secka was unable to continue. Defensive man Harrison Parker with a swift change of shirts, sliding into the sweaty gloves for the time that remained. Comfortably enough they saw it out. A point apiece in the not-so-talked-about Sussex derby. A first point from a losing position for Whitehawk since the opening afternoon of the season. Resilience on display, true spirit shown as Munt’s late, late strike might just be the most pivotal of them all as we dive into the latter portion of the campaign, hopeful for a renewed sense of positivity.

Now the isolated Javaun Splatt was pushed out to the wing where he could drive with the ball. Fraser the cog in the quickening wheel. Off came the rust. Munt with a surprise drive yards outside the box. Over the crossbar it surged before crashing into the large ball-saver thingy behind. whitehawk vs CHICHESTER CITY

league review

BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Leaders Hastings United travelled to Whitstable Town, and for much of the match it looked as if they’d have to be content with a point. Six minutes from time, however, Kenny Pogue started a Po-go amongst the visiting fans by getting the winner- and there was more good news to come. That goal left United seven points clear at the top.

when Tijan Jadama scored on sixty three minutes. The seven hundred and twenty six watching on had much to cheer, and their side end the day in fifth.

That seven point gap came about because closest rivals Ashford United let a two goal lead slip for the second Saturday in succession- only this time the outcome was much worse than last weekend’s draw with Lancing. The Nuts and Bolts hosted promotion rivals Haywards Heath Town, and made the breakthrough nine minutes before half time, Josh Wisson with his ninth of the season. Johan Ter Horst made it two with twenty five minutes remaining, only for Kieron Rowe to set up a thrilling climax by quickly halving the arrears. Just how thrilling we were soon to see, as Jordy Ndozid levelled six minutes later and then Tom Cadman gave Heath the lead, with twelve minutes left- and Sean Saunders men held out for what had seemed an unlikely three points. United are second, Heath fourth- and there are only two points between second and sixth. Heath celebration image courtesy of the club.

Bottom side Phoenix Sports saw Wale Odedoyin give them the lead eleven minutes before half time, but Sitingbourne’s number ten Ahmed Abdulla drew them level eight minutes after the restart, his eighth of the campaign. A red card for Harrison Pont made it difficult for the Brickies in the closing stages, and just how difficult was demonstrated when Josh Dorling popped up with a Sports winner right at the end. With only six points between Sports in last place and East Grinstead Town in seventeenth, no wonder they’re playing The Great Escape at the Mayplace Ground.

We had two very, very early goals as Hythe Town hosted promotion-chasing Cray Valley PM. The first went to the visitors, Denzel Gayle putting them ahead after just three minutes, but they were ahead for just one minute before Tyler Sterling equalised for the Cannons. Marcel Barrington restored the visitors lead on nineteen minutes- his fourteenth of the season and second against these opponents after he scored in the Millers four-nil victory back in Octoberbut again the Cannons hit back, and were level at the break after Jacob Gilbert made it two-two. Again the Millers went ahead, Francis Babalola making it threetwo in the sixty fifth minute, and Barrington made sure of the points with his side’s fourth just before the end. The Millers are third. Ramsgate hoped to climb back into the top five wiith victory over Sevenoaks Town, but, initially at least, were the architects of their own downfall with an own goal after eighteen minutes. The equaliser wasn’t too long in coming, Jamie Coyle getting that ten minutes before the break, and the turnaround was complete

Corinthian and Herne Bay couldn’t manage a goal between them, a result which sees Bay drop out of the top five whilst their hosts are eleventh.

Chichester City’s Ryan Davidson scored after just six minutes as Chi hosted another Sussex side, Three Bridges. The next eighty four minutes had no more goals, and City are ninth, nine points clear of their visitors. Burgess Hill Town welcomed just over four hundred to the More Than Tyres Stadium for a clash of the Greens, and the home Greens would have been delighted when Conrad Honore gave them the lead soon after the hour against VCD Athletic. Super Pat Harding made it two-nil a quarter of an hour before the end, his one hundred and thirtieth Hillians goaland still he looks no older. Lancing looked rather good in coming from two down to draw at Ashford United last weekend, and the Lancers shocked Sussex visitors Whitehawk when Lorenzo Lewis opened the scoring on the half hour. This time the comeback came from the Hawks, for whom Ollie Munt grabbed a point from the spot right at the end. East Grinstead Town took the lead against Faversham Town with only nineteen minutes remaining, Aidan Brown opening the scoring. He closed the scoring too, as that turned out to be the only goal of the game- a result which saw the Wasps climb a place to seventeenth.

Remarkably, just six years later in 1961 the Hawks scored a dozen again and bettered the margin with a 12-0 home win against the very same opponents. We are hoping to catch up soon with Fred Sallis, who scored six in the 1955 fixture, appearing alongside his brother Jimmy. Fred is still going strong and is the uncle of one of the volunteers for AFC Southwick who share our ground. Three generations of the Sallis family have played for the Hawks, with Fred and Jimmy being followed by Tommy in the early 70s and his son Iain in the late nineties. His man of the match performance helped Chichester advance past Winchester in the preliminary round of the FA Cup this season. Ollie Carroll (Keeper) Ollie is the U23s’ keeper. Rob Hutchings (Left Back) Rob, 24, signed for Chichester from local rivals Wick. Rob was an attacking player but for the past four seasons he’s been starting at left back. Ryan Davidson (Right Back) The 26-year-old versatile defender played for local rivals Pagham. Ryan signed for Chichester in the summer of 2019. Corey Heath (Centre Back) A local lad and a product of the Chichester youth system. He made his first team debut as a teenager. Corey, 26, had spells at Worthing and Bognor Regis. He re-signed for his boyhood club in 2019. Connor Cody (Centre Back) Connor is Chichester’s captain. Like his fellow centre back Corey Heath, Connor played for Chichester youth teams. He has also had a spell at Worthing. Connor re-joined Chichester in 2018 and was a key figure in the promotion campaign to Step 4. Ben Pashley (Centre Back/Left Back) Another City stalwart who re-signed in January 2020 after a spell at Worthing. His goal pulled Chichester back into the first qualifying round tie with Cribbs last year. Lewis Hyde (Centre Back) A 2021 summer signing Lewis has caught the eye during pre-season. He was an important player at Horsham. 20

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Dan Wood (Defence) Dan, a University of Chichester student, is the U23s captain. Emmett Dunn (Defence/Midfield) The 20-year-old Canadian re-joined the club after a spell at Bognor. He scored a header in his first game back at Chichester against Chalfont St Peter in the 2019-20 first qualifying round. Adam Biss (Defence/Midfield) Former U18s Bristol Rovers player on loan from Gosport Borough. Flori Vucaj (Defence/Midfield) 18-year-old Portsmouth College student and U23s player who broke into the first team in 2020-21 pre-season. Matt scored Chichester’s opener against Bowers & Pitsea in the fourth qualifying round of the 2019-20 FA Cup match as Chichester progressed to the first round ‘proper’. His penalty won the shoot-out with Basingstoke in the world’s oldest knock-out competition in 2020-21. Lloyd Rowlatt (Midfield) Lloyd, 25, signed for Chichester from Moneyfields in the summer of 2019 after playing for Pagham. Lloyd’s 87th minute FA Cup winner against Enfield Town sent Chichester through to the fourth qualifying round two seasons ago. He tucked home a spot kick in the penalty shoot-out with Basingstoke in 2020 and rifled in the winner in the come-back win over Risborough Rangers. Jamie Horncastle (Midfield) Jamie was at the club when Miles Rutherford and Graeme Gee took on their managerial roles in 2015. Jamie was a centre back then. Jamie re-joined Chichester after a spell at Pagham.

He scored in the extra preliminary round match against Erith Town and got the winner in the replay with Hartley Wintney in 2019-20. Rory Biggs (Midfield) A hard working, competitive midfielder who signed from Arundel. The 29-year-old is a real character and played a significant part in Chichester’s SCFL premier division winning season. Tyrone Madhani (Midfield/Attack) A versatile player who has had spells at Brighton & Hove Albion’s youth set-up, Lewes and played for American universities. Tyrone is on loan from Bognor Regis Town. Gicu Iordache (Midfield/Attack) Gicu, 27, plays mainly as an attacking left or right sided player. The Romanian scored twice against Bridon Ropes in the 2019-20 FA Cup preliminary round and got another in the 2-0 victory over Chalfont St Peter. Gicu grabbed Chi’s third goal in the 3-1 win at Winchester City in this FA Cup campaign. Kaleem Haitham (Midfield/Attack) The 23-year-old is an exciting player. Kaleem scored two goals against Bridon Ropes in a 7-2 win in the preliminary round of the 2019-20 FA Cup. His lucky goal at Bowers & Pitsea sent Chichester through to the ‘proper’ rounds of the cup for only the second time in the club’s history. Kaleem was also on target against Risborough Rangers and Tonbridge Angels in the cup last year. Ethan Prichard (Midfield/Attack) The Bournemouth Academy 18-year-old broke through into the Chichester senior side in pre-season 2020. He netted the third goal against Cribbs in the FA Cup in 2020 and scored the second

against Winchester in 2021. Callum Overton (Attack) Callum has played for a number of non-league clubs. The 24-year-old scored against the Ropes and got another two goals in the extra preliminary round tie with Erith Town in 2019-20. Scott Jones (Attack) Chichester’s 30-year-old surfing striker from the Isle of Wight. The former Havant and Waterlooville forward scored twice against Bridon Ropes in the 7-2 win in 2019-20. His header in the second minute put Chi 1-0 up against Winchester in the FA Cup this term. Chichester City FC Management Miles Rutherford (Manager) Miles, an experienced non-league manager, took charge at Chichester in autumn 2015. Graeme Gee (Assistant Manager) Joined the management team as Miles Rutherford’s assistant in 2015. Like Miles, Graeme has been involved in non-league football management for many years. COMMUNITY NEWS

WE BRING YOU THE LATEST NEWS FROM AROUND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Community isn’t simply the people, it’s the spaces in which people live, work, play and organise. Despite the lack of funding, East Brighton Park is a glorious space right on our doorstep. Nestled under the foot of the Downs, right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, East Brighton Park was created in 1925 and is a 60 acre site containing football pitches (the South Coast Ambulance Service uses them to land air ambulance helicopters) tennis courts, a kids’ playground, a fantastic café and plenty of walking and dog friendly space. And it is currently home to a Covid-19 testing station. 22

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Since 1947 it has, of course, been the gateway to The Enclosed. Interestingly, The Enclosed was built on land formerly leased from Brighton Corporation by Brighton College, which, after running into financial difficulties returned the land to the Corporation. Possibly just as interesting, the caravan park – opened in 1938 – was the first municipal camping ground in England.

The Park does have other community uses throughout the year (pandemic permitting). Wild Chalk day is an opportunity to explore the flora and fauna right on our doorstep – which as well as rare flowers, the unique to the area Whitehawk beetle (honest!) badgers, foxes, rabbits, larks, kestrels, the occasional wandering peregrine and red kite, is now home to a pair of Jays!

Those who have seen the film “Oh! What A Lovely War” may recognise the trenches of the Somme, filmed as it was in East Brighton Park. Fortunately, the holes were refilled!

The Park and Sheepcote Valley are well worth exploring. Make the most of this green space on our doorstep. It’s your Club, it’s your community – get involved. #COYH

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
