THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk Football Club for today’s home game with Corinthian. It’s a particularly warm welcome to East Brighton Park to the Billings family, other officials and supporters from Kent, who haven’t played here since 1995 in the FA Vase. Corinthian are a unique club and the small band of supporters who made the Tuesday night trip to Gay Dawn Farm in October were rewarded with one of our best performances of the season and a 4-0 win. Given our perilous league position, another win and three points would be a welcome relief today. It was superb to see so many Hawks fans at Burgess Hill last weekend, even if the team’s performance again let us down. This time there was no late Ollie Munt penalty to save us, as we once more found creating chances near impossible and succumbed to the sucker punch of a free header from one of the smallest players on the pitch with the final touch of the first half. Unlike at Lancing, the Hillians welcomed musical instruments, lobster costumes and dogs, so at least the atmosphere on the terraces was positive. It was to our fans’ credit that they

continued to make loads of noise throughout the second half as the game slowly subsided to another narrow defeat. As you know by now, this programme is no longer being issued in printed form which is sad for me as the club’s historian and collector of programmes going back to our early days. This week using records provided by Burgess Hill stalwart John Buck, I was able to finally establish beyond doubt 1958 (not 1960) as the year that we dropped the Manor Farm Old Boys moniker to become just plain Whitehawk FC. If you are interested in that and any other questions about our history, it’s all written up on our website and reproduced on the club’s Wikipedia page. ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE It’s often said that it’s a relief to have seen the last of January. Cold, soggy, miserable. Well, it was not the ‘one’ for Whitehawk’s illustrious football side either: three draws, two defeats, two goals scored. It leaves the Hawks looking precariously over their shoulder a touch, wafting away those that lurk below. No matter, for a new month brings a new image, a fresh landscape where the sun shines longer and warmer. Translate that onto the pitch and, well, ding ding ding, we have a winner. Feel it in the air? There’s a freshness to it, as if a sleeping dragon has awoken from its prolonged slumber. Breathe the fire into them - they’re certainly capable of greatness, just look at the reverse fixture. But all of that, and indeed more, is to come later on. First on the list is a shallow memory, one that should be forgotten but also probably shouldn’t. Yep, it’s everyone’s favourite time of the week: dissecting last Saturday’s performance.
approached. The hosts would leave their *sighs* More Than Tyres Stadium with maximum points despite rarely causing Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke a huge wealth of grief. Undone by a corner, the Hawks’ marking admittedly scarce, Martyn Box’s vicious header crashed into the netting. That was that. Whitehawk huffing, puffing, unavailing. A new face in Daniel Thompson led the line as Henry Muggeridge and Henry Blackmore joined a growing list of absentees through illness. The intent was there, yet it simply could not match the early precedent enforced by the Hillians. They climbed closer to the play-offs, the Hawks slipping to 16th. Never fear, there’s plenty more football remaining (wahoo!). As the season slides beyond its climax the time has come for the Isthmian League newcomers to visit the Enclosed Ground. Who’s that you ask? Look no further than...
LAST TIME OUT
THE OPPOSITION
And here we are: a torrid month of temperature and results moved to mid-Sussex with a short venture up to Burgess Hill. A side in unequivocally exquisite form, the expectancy for a cagey, scrappy, fluid-deficient game rose as the weekend
Corinthian! Hailing from the land of trees, oast houses and Billings, Saturday’s opponents have found life rather straightforward since their inception back in August. Sitting pretty in 11th, as many wins as they have losses (nine, by the
way), it combines with seven draws. Palindrome FC, it should keep them comfortably secure for the season proceeding as this cosy Kent club tick off a ‘new’ arena. A serene 3-0 victory over VCD Athletic in their previous affair, they have tasted defeat just once since December 18. More triumphs on the road, too, justifies a potency that few expected at the season’s commencement. Goals evenly shared across the team, it’s the combination of the Jack’s that lead the way as Bath and Mahoney both have five to their name. PREVIOUS MEETING Ah, finally. A certain Andy Schofield will likely be able to dig out a prehistoric fixture from the bowels of the club but, for the mind’s less eidetic, we only have to journey back as far as late October. Oooh yes, when the winds were starting to blow a chillier breeze and the leaves were starting to fall, it was Whitehawk’s finest hour (and a half): four goals, none conceded; a demolition at Gay Dawn Farm. A Javaun Splatt brace combined with Charlie Lambert’s opener and James Fraser’s header to seal a good day at the office. Now, how do we get home?

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
SO, after much deliberation, doubt and concern, England C is back – and in a whole new guise. It’s been two-and-a-half years since Paul Fairclough led out Non-League’s Young Lions with many fearing that crippling FA finances from the pandemic may spell the end of the institution which has had young semi-professionals dreaming of representing their country since 1979. You needn’t go far to realise just what donning those Three Lions means to a Non-League footballer. Players now playing in the top-flight of English pride have done so with immense pride and speak fondly about how the experience helped develop them as a player – and as a man. Only a few weeks ago, NLP columnist Tony Incenzo spoke to QPR’s former Watford striker Andre Gray about his six England C caps won between 2012 and 2014 while playing for Luton Town. “I loved my time with England C,” he said. “We travelled to countries that we probably never would have visited otherwise and saw some unreal places. The support from the coaching staff was really hands on and they were very good at the diet and psychology side of things. People might be surprised by how professional
the England C set-up is run. “It was such an honour to be capped at international level as a Non-League player. I found it a great opportunity to test myself against top young footballers from places like Russia and Turkey. Most of the players around me in Paul Fairclough’s squad moved into the Football League and the Premier League. I am sure that my England C appearances helped me progress as a footballer. The whole experience prepared me towards playing at a much higher level of club football. “I would definitely recommend England C to any young Non-League players who are aspiring to move forward in their careers.” Thankfully, calls for a reunification of the England C post-Covid have been heard and last week it was announced that the Three Lions would return to play their first game since June 2019 when they take on Wales C at Caernarfon Town on Wednesday, March 30. As he has since 2003, Paul Fairclough will once again take the reins – but this time has an altogether different job on his hands with his squad selections no longer limited to players under the age of 23. That means, the veteran former Barnet and Stevenage chief literally has the pick of Non-
League football to choose a squad from and with the likes of Wrexham, Stockport and Chesterfield all spending big and taking the National League to a whole new level, that’s a pretty mouthwatering task. I mean, can you imagine a strike force, for example, containing the likes of Kabongo Tshimanga and Michael Cheek and boosting with the experience and firepower of an Ollie Palmer, Paddy Madden or Paul Mullin? Interestingly, this new England C set-up will no longer by funded by the Football Association but instead jointly by the National League and the Trident Leagues at Steps 3 and 4. The FA have remained pretty tight-lipped on the reason for this but, thinking about it, with the TV connections that the National League have, could it be that the England C team begin to get the exposure that they deserve? This, in turn, can resurrect careers and propel new ones with players of all levels vying for their chance to go under the spotlight. At The NLP, we are naturally delighted to see the England C team back in action and can’t wait to see how the new venture unfolds. It may have taken a while but the Three Lions are roaring again.

WHITEHAWK
BOX 45’
SATURDAY 29 JANUARY 2022 | MORE THAN TYRES STADIUM | ATT: 774 | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST BY ISAAC GLEAVE
It was a game that looked bleak from the outset. For Whitehawk this was another on the list of performances where things simply did not seem to click. Burgess Hill Town’s Tommy Reid forced into few saves as the shifting blue shapes were fruitless in their offensive attempts. The Hillians by no means overwhelming; Whitehawk powerlessness the masters of their fate. Destiny was sealed on the stroke of half time: Martyn Box in the, errr, box to nod in the affair’s lone goal. It was all just a bit too obvious. But anyway, the scene must be set: a tinge of the usual grey pillows above provided a murky vista, surrounding trees danced majestically in the swaying breeze. An enclosed ground (no, not that one), but a green environment nonetheless. Stands full, fences lined to the hip with fans of England’s 8

non-league. The real fans, the one’s that value its gravity. 744 cold faces watched on as the newly-acquired-from-Margate Daniel Thompson led the line, Javaun Splatt to his left, Peter Gregory to his right. Plagued by a myriad of injuries, illnesses, recalls this squad was a little thin. And did it show. Slipping from the tunnel strode the lines of t-shirted footballers, sinking their studs into the soft mud. The ones dressed in black and green started the scattered stopwatches to a strong noise, stronger crowd in this revered Sussex rivalry. Our very own A23 derby, only this time those that hail by the sea had a strikingly smaller xG. In the ascendancy for a split second, the byline Splatt striking it acutely goalwards, summoning Reid into rare action by shifting it away with his hands. No foreshadowing here. At the opposite end stands a lethargic Tegan Freeman, dispossessed close to goal
with Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke stranded. Like a topped golf ball its takeoff was aborted, landing serenely into the arms of the Hawks’ goal guarder. With sharpening frequency that Whitehawk backline was placed under pressure. Defence, midfield, attack – lacking in the fluidity and cohesion as Josh Spinks heads woefully wide from a header as free as bald eagle gliding over a Texan desert. Formulating passes in the final third was not a thing of Ross Standen’s side. Burgess Hill appeared sharper, fitter, and with the desire of a side who looked like they wanted a play-off position. Lewis Taylor at the heart of this body, the electricity source that spun and surged to excellent precision, whilst also invoking a fine acrobatic save from Stroomberg-Clarke, tipping it away for a corner kick. And then the goal: simple, unmarked, emphatic. A real net-bulger. Dubious was the decision for the far side free-kick, it was swung in true with skill and power. But where was the marking? Where were the wavy blue shirts to head it away? Mere moments from a little break, Box climbed softly to crash the ball fiercely into the green netting. Hands placed onto the heads, confusion raining down on the tops of the Hawks. A shambolic time to concede, that expectant whistle blew with a distant darkness approaching. Back out. Lights on, please. For brief spells Whitehawk had the advantage. Returning with a purpose, Freeman unleashed something few knew he was capable of: rifling from range towards the goal Reid is called upon, soaring through the air at height to push it over the crossbar.
In truth, however, this half was perhaps poorer than the first. Succession of corners resulting in nothingness, the ability to score slowly died throughout the ensuing forty-five minutes. A laudable shift from Jay Lovett’s men, they remained a resolute band of brothers by heading, clearing, launching the ball away from the intermittent danger. Ollie Munt would send it over, Finney dragging it wide. It was a contest that was desperately short in offensive quality. Testament to two rigid defences, there was far too much careless loss in possessions. Both sets of players culpable, seldom seen was attractive football. And when it was, the finishing was constantly weak. Time drying out, hope for the Hawks’ wonderful support fading – a shining light in a fixture otherwise bereft of belief. The recently flung on Alex Laing drilling it into Splatt’s chest, a swift turn and pass out wide to Harry Reed catered for a precise pass into the box for the patient Thompson. This was the moment: the stars aligning for this last flicker of promise, arrowed recklessly high into the great, green trees behind. Epitomising Whitehawk’s frustration this cyclical process continues to swirl. An icy shake of the hands between Standen and Lovett signals the end of another defeated afternoon. Winless still since the earliest days of December this one showed why. It will happen. Tides will change and games will be won. For now that candle remains lit but as the calendar flips, thankfully, to the month of February, the desperation for some more wax is starting to grow.

league PREVIEW
BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK)
We’ve a six point gap between first and second, a one point gap between second and fifth. Here’s our Pitching In Isthmian South East preview. Hastings United, six points clear at top, welcome Hythe Town. United have only lost one of their last ten, whilst the Cannons have only one win from the same period- but it was in their last match so perhaps things are looking up? The last time they met, United won three-nil.
four clean sheets in their last five matches and haven’t tasted defeat in two months; although their visitors have only lost four of their last ten, their best form of the campaign so far. Herne Bay, with only two points from their last twelve, welcome one of our form sides, East Grinstead Town. The Wasps have climbed to twelfth place after eight games unbeaten, and will pose a test for Bay, who have dropped out of the top five.
Second place Ramsgate, with three consecutive wins, are on the road to VCD Athletic. Vickers have lost two out of their last three but have been in good form otherwise, so might pose a test for the high-flying Rams. The last time they met on the Kent coast, Vickers left with the points- so perhaps a little revenge is in order.
Burgess Hill Town, winners of our Manager of the Month and Performance of the Month awards this week, perhaps got the curse early as they lost for the first time in ages in midweek, at Chichester City. The Hillians are on the road again, this time to Faversham Town, the Lilywhites on their worst run of the season with five consecutive defeats.
Cray Valley PM got back to winning ways in midweek. They welcome Whitstable Town, who sit third bottom after three consecutive defeats. Level on points with the Rams and just behind them on goal difference, victory could take the Millers second- but conversely defeat or a draw could see them slip to fifth. We have only one point between second and fifth.
Chichester are on the road to Sittingbourne as eighth hosts tenth. Only three points separate the two, and a win for the visitors will see them climb above the Brickies. Both sides have only lost three of their last ten.
Ashford United are on the road to draw specialists Three Bridges. Bridges, with nine draws this season, have suddenly stopped drawing- with three wins and six defeats from their last nine, whilst the Nuts and Bolts have lost two of their last three. The last time they met was goalless, so hopefully we’ll have a little more entertainment this time around. Haywards Heath Town picked up our AB1 Golden Gloves Award this week, and welcome bottom side Phoenix Sports to Hanbury Park. Heath have kept
Corinthian, having a fine first Isthman season, are on the road to Whitehawk. The Hawks aren’t having the campaign we expected them to have, and sit in sixteenth place, whilst their visitors are six places and ten points ahead. With only two defeats in ten the side in green and white hoops are in good form, whilst the Hawks have but one win in ten. Finally, Sevenoaks Town welcome a resurgent Lancing. The Lancers are only a point behind their hosts, who have only two wins from their last ten, whilst the visitors are four matches unbeaten and won a seven goal thriller against Three Bridges last time out. whitehawk vs corinthian

OUR VISITORS
WE LOOK AT TODAY’S VISITORS TO THE TERRAPURA GROUND Corinthian FC was founded in 1972 by Mr RJ Billings (snr) to provide football in a safe environment, whilst teaching the players the principles that he believed to be important in sport.
playing in Kent Division 2 (season 2008/09) and then moving on (2009/10) into the Suburban League South Division. This partnership has now come to an end.
The motto was simply “pro omnium beneficio”for the benefit of all, but on the pitch the principles were simple; “Hard, but fair”. Losing wasn’t considered before the game, but if the result went against us then the players were taught to take it graciously.
When the opportunity came for us to re-enter senior football as Corinthian Football Club, we did not hesitate to take it. Probably 2 years too soon, but the challenge was one we were keen to take. We introduced a second senior side playing in the Suburban League to help us progress our u18’s into men’s football.
For the first ten years of the club’s existence we were pleased to welcome such teams as Tottenham, Charlton and Norwich amongst other league teams as well as county and district representative sides as our opposition. On top of these games there were many regular visitors to Gay Dawn Farm from local clubs making up a fixture list of over 60 games per season. During the 1980s with the arrival of an experienced football manager, Mr Tony Sitford, we progressed from youth football into men’s football playing in the old Southern League. This level of football by a totally amateur club made us unique, but caused problems in the long run in attracting new players. Into the 1990’s we dropped back down to the Kent League and enjoyed many a season in this set up. Early into the new century we reviewed the whole structure of our football club and decided that we had lost our roots in youth football and this was having a detrimental effect on our senior side. So, we decided to withdraw temporarily from senior football, whilst we rebuilt the lower levels of the club. In 2008 we had managed to create a club running 5 sides, from 13 years old through to 18 years old and it became obvious that we needed to consider the next step in our restructuring. For two seasons we had a liaison with Welling United, integrating a senior side within Welling United and developed a reserve side initially 20
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
The 2010 / 11 season saw Corinthian FC running two senior sides one in the Kent Football League Premier Division and one in the Suburban League South Division plus three youth sides – u14, u15 and u18 in the Kent Youth League. For the 2011/12 season as well as all the above, Corinthian FC had an u18 side in the Ryman Youth League. We feel that that this fills the gap from Kent Youth League to senior football, enabling us to offer a true progression for all our players. The 2012/13, 14/15, 15/16, 17/18 ,18/19 and 19/20 seasons saw the addition of u13 and u15 team playing in the Kent Youth League. After untimely ends to the 2019/20 & 2020/21 seasons, when the boys were flying high, we are delighted to have retained the main squad, with the addition of some of last season u18’s. Corinthian Football Club are delighted to have been promoted into the Isthmian League Division 1 South East for the 2021/22 season and are looking forward to the challenge, to visiting new grounds and making new friends. For our 21/22 campaign we continue with sides in the Suburban League Premier Division, Isthmian u18 East Division as well as the Isthmian South East Division.

COMMUNITY NEWS
WE BRING YOU THE LATEST NEWS FROM AROUND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
Community isn’t simply the people, it’s the spaces in which people live, work, play and organise. Despite the lack of funding, East Brighton Park is a glorious space right on our doorstep. Nestled under the foot of the Downs, right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, East Brighton Park was created in 1925 and is a 60 acre site containing football pitches (the South Coast Ambulance Service uses them to land air ambulance helicopters) tennis courts, a kids’ playground, a fantastic café and plenty of walking and dog friendly space. And it is currently home to a Covid-19 testing station. 22
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Since 1947 it has, of course, been the gateway to The Enclosed. Interestingly, The Enclosed was built on land formerly leased from Brighton Corporation by Brighton College, which, after running into financial difficulties returned the land to the Corporation. Possibly just as interesting, the caravan park – opened in 1938 – was the first municipal camping ground in England.
The Park does have other community uses throughout the year (pandemic permitting). Wild Chalk day is an opportunity to explore the flora and fauna right on our doorstep – which as well as rare flowers, the unique to the area Whitehawk beetle (honest!) badgers, foxes, rabbits, larks, kestrels, the occasional wandering peregrine and red kite, is now home to a pair of Jays!
Those who have seen the film “Oh! What A Lovely War” may recognise the trenches of the Somme, filmed as it was in East Brighton Park. Fortunately, the holes were refilled!
The Park and Sheepcote Valley are well worth exploring. Make the most of this green space on our doorstep. It’s your Club, it’s your community – get involved. #COYH

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
