THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk Football Club for today’s home game with Phoenix Sports. It’s a particularly warm welcome to East Brighton Park to officials and fans from south-east London. Phoenix have only been to our ground once before and left with all three points in September 2019, after a second half recovery resulted in a 2-1 win. Only Luke Emberson survives as a Hawks player from that team. Although out injured at present, we are delighted Luke has signed a new contract with us until 2023. Left back for us that day was Charles Banya, who we may see again this season in opposition colours as he was one of nine new signings for Sevenoaks Town under their new manager Harry Hudson last weekend. The fight to stay in the league is getting serious. Well done to the fans who made the long trip last

week to Herne Bay. I have made comments on this page before about our support making the difference, especially when not everything is going our way. Last week was hard to watch, as we had to endure a first half hour that left a lot to be desired in terms of quality. We did play better in the second half with Ollie Munt pulling the strings in midfield, but the fans who made the trip still stuck together to urge the team on. When your team is struggling, we need everyone pulling together in the same direction, not turning inward, and looking for someone to blame. So once more, I urge you to stay safe, enjoy the match and get right behind both the management and team, as we seek a vital three points today. Andy Schofield

ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE
And then it was March, and the winds were fairer and the temperatures cooler. In footballing terms this month marks the dawn of the final chapter, the denouement, you may say, where all possibilities are on the table. Ten games remain. Ten crucial, thrilling cup finals face the Hawks on this jittering road to salvation. Next stop, Phoenix Sports. Slithering down to the coast they move. An entire team’s identity moves with each passing game. Players, coaches, officials, fans, balls, kits – as one they bumble down in unity, pleading for a route away from desolation themselves. 17th v 19th, Whitehawk v Phoenix; let the battle of the inflamed birds commence. LAST TIME OUT A two week hiatus ended with a first defeat in three league matches following a slow, sloppy opening half of Whitehawk football. A midfield that simply failed to cope with the pace and power of Herne Bay’s core, a brace of Zak Ansah tap-ins had his side two goals in favour after 22 minutes.
But the second half was an improvement. Slowly they pushed The Bay backline deeper, grounding them down like water over rocks as Alex Laing provided the defibrillation, flicking Olly Munt’s delicate cross into the netting. Hope restored, yet there was to be no restoration of parity. A defeat on the road; the Hawks continue their search for a first win since the beginning of December.
Understandably in the midst of a prolonged drought in front of goal, finding the net has proved no elementary feat. Alfie Evans, Calvin Poku and Byron Walker have all billowed the chequered strings of rope on four occasions, as the loss of Jeff Duah-Kessie earlier in the campaign still wounds the south-east London outfit.
THE OPPOSITION
It was as the bitter chill in the air grew stronger by the day that these two clubs last fought. Beneath the thin floodlights of Mayplace Road East the Hawks shone through, storming into a two-goal advantage minutes after the half-hour mark as a Ben Fitchett own-goal preceded a Javaun Splatt rifler.
When Steven O’Boyle was reinstated as Phoenix Sports manager at the backend of 2021, his side were languishing desperately at the bottom of the table. After many a month of toiling and grinding away, the results have begun to pick up as a miraculous escape proves a possibility. Four wins from their previous nine fixtures has seen them leapfrog Whitstable Town on goal difference alone, whilst dangling a mere a two points adrift of Sevenoaks Town, and just five behind your humble Whitehawk. It’s tight at the standing’s foot.
PREVIOUS MEETING
Duah-Kessie halved the deficit before James Fraser restored it, only for Alfie Evans to inject the flapping butterflies into the Whitehawk stomachs. The sturdy pair of Mo Kamara and Adam El-Abd shutting out the opposition, a narrow 3-2 victory was assured for Ross Standen and co.

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
IF YOU caught any of the the League Cup final from Wembley last Sunday, you will already know the story well. Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy had a fantastic game against Liverpool but with a few minutes of extra-time to go, the TV cameras had already picked up on Thomas Tuchel’s masterplan for the penalty shoot-out. Readying himself on the bench was stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who then came on before time ran out with the theory his penalty saving record would tip the balance in the Blues’ favour. Of course, we are familiar with strikers coming off the bench in the final minutes of games to specifically take a spot-kick. As England found out in the European Championship final, it doesn’t always work. And, as events would have it, the move also backfired for Chelsea. Kepa couldn’t keep out any of Liverpool’s 11 penalties and then blazed his over the bar
to hand Jurgen Klopp’s team victory. It seemed, with the hindsight factor we all love to ignore, a crazy decision. Who knows… Mendy staying on may have yielded the same result. But the decision was a big post-match talking point. We’ve seen managers try it a few times over the years. There was even a moment in this season’s FA Vase when it worked to perfection for Wallingford. Lawrie Aitchison is usually a defender by trade but had to pull on the gloves in the second round qualifying when regular stopper Sam Baldock was ruled out in the warm-up as a precautionary measure while still feeling the effects of a suspected concussion in a previous game. After a 4-4 thriller with Bishops Cleeve, Aitchison saved two penalty shoot-out kicks and his side advanced.
It set the cogs whirring in boss Lee Matthews brain. So when the 21-year-old centre-back woke up on the morning of their first round game against Ascot United, he had a message from the gaffer telling him to bring his gloves. And not to tell anyone! Now this story wouldn’t be told if the game had ended with one side winning after the 90 minutes. Again, Wallingford staged a comeback to draw 2-2 and send the game to penalty kicks. Aitchison swapped his outfield jersey for a spare keeper’s one and got ready to stare down his opponents. And he went even better for the Step 6 outfit, saving three times to help his side continue their Vase run. So thinking differently and trying to be clever can work. Not that it will help Chelsea fans feel any better!

SATURDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2022 | MBS STADIUM | ATT: 350 | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST BY ISAAC GLEAVE
As the blinding yellow sun reached the zenith of the Kentish sky and gently warmed the faces of those below, it provided a sunlit vista upon an immaculately kept turf. The heavens rich with cyan blue it welcomed the first seeds of Spring. Scattered below were twenty-two footballers who sweated away in the rare late February heat. At the curtailing of the centrepiece there were weary legs, contrasting faces, drained brains. An afternoon in Herne Bay is often greeted with an intractable opposition: fearless overlapping, intricate passing, deft finishing. And this was to be the formula for Whitehawk’s downfall, an opening half that left them trailing, hurting, flagging in the dust. And in all of this, where all seems so very natural and habitual, as the gentle smiles kiss the plastic cups of beer, there’s a faint feeling of insignificance. 8
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
That same golden star above beats down on faraway lands but casts a very different shadow. Look at the fortuitous revellers behind the goal, in the stands, sheltered from a barrage of bullets and conflict. How pitifully sad this world is, and how powerless its inhabitants can feel. Another burger flipped, another pint guzzled – the globe continues to spin on its axis with devastating imbalance. But a constant remains: the beauty of sport. Coalescing cities, nations, continents, there are few global spectacles that both bind and divide our hearts, yet offer such a vast platform for voices to be heard. From the fizzing heights of the Premier League to the purity of the Isthmian divisions, it is still the same game, it is still the same rules. Out sauntered the lines of Herne Bay blue and Whitehawk red. ‘Come on boys, let’s go now’ echoes around the delightfully non-league tunnel with the
commencing sound of the whistle sailing high into the fresh sea air. Immediately the Hawks are forced to defend. This would be the narrative for the early minutes. Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke was busy, to begin with. Hurriedly turning a whipped effort around his pearly-white post, he was to be collecting the ball from the very rear of his net as the prolific Zak Ansah gracefully swept the ball beyond all limb from a matter of yards out. Kieron Campbell denied by the guarder’s paws initially, The Bay’s leading scorer in Ansah would add another to his growing tally. The hosts were rampant. Slicing through an insipid midfield at will, Declan Kama was drowning in overloads as they bombarded the left-hand side of the green pasture. Ansah eying league goal #15 from range, Stroomberg-Clarke tips over. Adem Ramadan heads it goalbound at the far post, Stroomberg-Clarke pushes it away. Relentless. At that moment, the gradient increased. Typically from that left side an optimistic cross bounced harshly in front of the Whitehawk ‘keeper, spilling it to the hungry Ansah who claimed his second of the afternoon. Barely midway through the first half already the outlook was redolent of bleakness. 2-0.
Life. Munt supplying the delicious cross, Alex Laing providing the catharsis, Whitehawk defibrillated. A simple goal on parchment, the left-sided free-kick was swung delicately into the box for Laing to head/neck/shoulder home as it splashed into the corner of the netting. That awoke the dozing dragon, now it was frothing with flavour, famished from its fatigue. A third and final substitution for Ross Standen: new addition Tareq Shahib replaces the huffing Peter Gregory. The weapons were loaded, the guns pointed, the bombardment ensued. Now the ball was stationed in the Herne Bay half. Tails up, neat interplay around the Bay box ends in a blocked Javaun Splatt whack. Corner. Cleared. The quest for salvation continues. But that was the final page. No more words left unread. There was to be no fairytale ending, no jubilant hawks flying high amongst the wild blue yonder. Instead, tempers flare: Adam El-Abd cynically chops down his onrushing opponents in the centre of the pitch. Incandescent are Herne Bay – it’s a yellow card, nothing more.
Herne Bay simmering in the shimmering light. Whitehawk idle when they needn’t be. It stems from the midfield, the throbbing core of formation.
Confusion as to whether the final whistle has been blown, eventually it sounds – still some are fiery, others defeated. Off the pitch and into the 90s-looking blue edifice, they filtered like bugs thirsty for a drink.
When inactive it places the defence under immense pressure, and when beaten it ripples through the rest of the side. It had not been Tegan Freeman’s afternoon — these days occur at any level — but the introduction of Ollie Munt added that required essence of tenacity, a brighter tinge of desire.
Limbs shattered, blood spirited. A truculent response ends in a second half victory. That’s something to hold onto, to take merit from, but in the scribbled lines of the present the search for a win continues.
There’s the half at an end. A quandary for the Sussex contingent. Talk it over, clear the muddled minds, show belief and character. And so, as they re-emerged onto a cooler yet still glowing setting, with the sun swiftly shifting over the far bank of the tall, thin, leafy trees, they exhibited just that: desire.
A return to the homelands beckons as lowly Phoenix Sports venture from the capital in a week’s time. Hope exists, it only takes a small dose of belief. Use that in life, not just sport – for we’re all facing battles of an ungodly nature under the sharp stars of our ancestors.
Truth be told, nothing actually occurred in front of goal. Passing was neater, quicker, innovative, but they still searched for that key to open the rusty lock. Manager Ben Smith has an organised side. Defensively they were stable, but the creativity from the Hawks was halting a resurgence. That final ball, a loose touch, miscommunication. Kama off, Henry Blackmore on. Twenty minutes are all that remain. whitehawk vs PHOENIX SPORTS

BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Hastings look home and dry, but we’ve important wins for Ashford, Ramsgate, Bay and Hill as the battle for the play off places heats up. It’s our Pitching In Isthmian South East Round up.
demolition job. Kane Rowland gave them the lead just before the half hour, and then Johan Caney-Bryan took control, adding two more in a thirteen minute spell just after the break.
Our leaders, Hastings United, travelled along the A27 to Chichester City with a six point lead, and new signing Danny Parish opened the scoring from the spot on fifty three minutes.
That was that, and Heath tumble out of the top five, whilst Sittingbourne are three places and six points further back.
As we expected, City didn’t roll over, and it took until the very last minute for United to confirm victory, James Hull with the second. By that point the visitors were down to ten men, Sam Hasler seeing red sixteen minutes from the end- but the end the day nine points clear. Our big match was between Ashford United and Cray Valley PM, in third and second. After a goalless first half the Nuts and Bolts got themselves in front nine minutes after the break through Luke Burdon, but were ahead for only three minutes before Ade Adeyemo equalised for the Millers. United then turned on the style, and Francis Collin restored home advantage thirteen minutes from time before Gary Lockyer made sure with a third, three minutes from time. Ramsgate travelled to Phoenix Sports, and blunted the hosts great escape. Jamie Coyle put the Rams ahead ten minutes before the break, Oliver Bate made it two three minutes later, and thirteen minutes into the second half Tijan Jadama made it three. Wale Odedoyin got one back for the hosts right at the end, but it was three points to the Rams, who are twelve points off the top but, perhaps more importantly, four points above sixth place Haywards Heath Town. Herne Bay are up to fifth. Two early goals from Zak Ansah gave them a two goal advantage over Whitehawk, his sixteenth and seventeenth of the season, and although Alex Laing got one back for the visitors with twenty one minutes remaining the points stayed at home. Haywards Heath Town travelled down to Sittingbourne to take on the Brickies, and their promotion hopes took a stoning as the hosts performed a
Burgess Hill Town are up to seventh, only four points short of the top five. The Hillians got three goals to go with their three points against Hythe Town, Lewis Tayor getting two of them, one in each half, before Hayden Skerry got the third right at the end. VCD Athletic travelled to East Grinstead Town on the back of two goalless draws, but it seemed they’d been saving up the goals for the Wasps. Courtney Barrington put them ahead after just two minutes, and within ten minutes of the second half it was three, Anthony Adesite and Sonny Black putting the match out of sight. Vickers end the day in eighth. Three Bridges made Whitstable Town’s survival bid more difficult at the home of the rail replacement bus service. Dan Perry has been in superb form of late, and got his seventeenth of the season on twenty five minutes. Curtis Gayler doubled their advantage four minutes before the break, and it was eighteen for Perry when he got number three nine minutes after half time. Stephen Okoh gave the Oysters hope seventeen minutes before the end, but it was forlorn hope and they stay at the bottom. Tyrell Richardson-Brown opened the scoring in Faversham Town’s match with Lancing, and he closed the scoring too, as that was the only goal of the game, giving the Lilywhites three points and lifting them to thirteenth. Finally, a much changed Sevenoaks Town side under new boss Harry Hudson looked to have taken all three points at Corinthian. Lesley Duru’s forty first minute goal gave Oaks the lead, but a late, late equaliser from Jack Mahoney earned a point for the hosts.

OUR VISITORS
WE LOOK AT TODAY’S VISITORS TO THE TERRAPURA GROUND Formed in 1935, Phoenix Sports Club originally started out as St. Johns Welling, later changing its name to Lakeside, before renaming to Phoenix following the Second World War as it was seen to rise from the ashes of the previous two clubs amidst the destruction caused by the blitz. Over the years the club has played at various locations in the local area, including Danson Park until 1950 when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. Over time it evolved into the ground that we all know now as The Club. Both football and cricket have been played at Mayplace Road East, with many members, both past and present, representing the club in both sports. However, with the growth of junior football, cricket has now moved away from the club. After entering various leagues, including the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County League Division One West. In the 1986/7 season, the club entered the Spartan League and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League - Division One - West, winning the Challenge Cup in 1993-94. In 1999/2000 we won the league, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations ended up in Division Two West, finally returning to the first division in 2004/05, and then back to the Premier Division in 2007/08. After three seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System (Step 10 of the English Football League System) – the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching 20
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
the League Cup Final, again losing out to Bly Spartans. Unfortunately, the First team and Reserve Team Management both resigned for personal reasons at the end of season 2011-2012. After an exhaustive process we appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint First Team Managers and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry. Off the pitch we installed floodlights and a 108 seat stand and with further improvements around the ground we soon received an F Grade. After a successful first campaign under the new management structure, and after losing only two league games all season, Phoenix won the Kent Invicta League and gained promotion to the Kent League (now renamed the Southern Counties East Football League) to play at step 5 of the National League System. We finished in sixth place in our inaugural Kent League season but had aims to do even better the next year. We had a very good start to the campaign but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup - losing on penalties after a replay. We then began an unbelievable run in both the League and FA Vase. The Vase journey was fantastic culminating in us reaching the 4th Round Proper, where we lost to the eventual winners North Shields. In the League we managed to lose only 1 game all season and accumulated 30 clean sheets. Due to these great performances we managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end, although there were a few sticky moments along the way. We then needed to work miracles off the pitch, but we eventually managed to get all the necessary works done in time to gain a D Grade and promo-
tion to Isthmian League North Division. Our first season at this level saw us finish in 14th place, which was improved upon the next year when we came 8th. We were then the subject of a lateral movement and competed in the newly sponsored Bostik League South, for the 2017-18 season. After a decent start and sitting in the play-off spots for a while, we were rocked by the departure of First Team Manager Steve O’Boyle. Paul Bryon came in and steadied the ship and we finished in a creditable 11th place. The following year we improved to a pleasing 9th position. The early ends to the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, prevented
us from again gaining top half finishes and we now go into the 2021/22 campaign looking to continue our progression as a Club. Alongside the First Team and the Reserves, we presently have over 20 teams playing in Phoenix colours, making us one of the biggest clubs in the area. Phoenix Sports are a FA charter Standard Community Club - the highest level of youth recognition from the Football Association. Mini-soccer is played at the Mayplace Ground and Sundays are always busy with parents cheering on the young players wearing our green shirt.

THE ONLINE PROGRAMME BY STUART FULLER
Over the past few months, the future of the humble football programme has been front and centre after a decision was taken by the EFL clubs that it was no longer mandatory to produce one for each and every game. There can be no doubt that the original purpose of the programme to educate and inform fans about what was going on at the club, who the opposition were and a vehicle to promote commercial partners. Today, our instant-on digital world means most of the content in the programme is out of date as soon as it is printed, with most fans attending a game having access to significantly more up-to-date information in the palm of their hands. Football fans want more today than just a memento of a game attended. On the most part they want content that is up to date and informative, adding value to their match day experience. Further down the leagues, the question of “to publish or not” comes down to money, or more than often, the lack of it. Few clubs can say that they make money on producing and selling a programme today, unless they are simply creating the bare minimum, printing in-house on a black and white photocopier. The programme is a conundrum for clubs at the Non-League level. On one hand, it is a valuable tool to get information over to the fans, whilst on the other it is a commercial vehicle for the club to sell advertising space. Unfortunately, whilst the commercial manager may be happy at selling 20 pages of ads, the reader wants to see editorial and content not ads. So, they won’t buy it and because they don’t buy it, the
22
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
appeal to the advertiser falls over time. An inverse catch 22. From experience, we have taken great pride in our match day programme, inviting a wide breadth of writers to produce unique and varied content coupled with some excellent match images. Our style and quality of content hasn’t changed much over the past few years, yet the number of copies we sell per game has slowly reduced despite attendances rising by nearly 25% over the last three seasons. We have traditionally sold 1 programme for every 4 attendees. On an average match-day we print 200 copies, 50 of which are used for players, management, guests and officials. The other 150, in most instances sell, at £2 a copy. Multiply that by 21 league games and the £6,300 is a very useful revenue stream. In addition, we have produced an online version, made available to anyone, 24 hours after the game. With over 700 owners living outside of the East Sussex catchment area, we have seen on average an additional 150 views of this. Of course, some of those who previously bought a programme could be now viewing the free online version, thus cannibalising our own sales but likewise, one of the appeals of the online programme is allowing those fans who cannot get to games to access the content. In most instances a programme for a Saturday game goes to print after a thorough edit on a Thursday at the very latest, which means that two whole days of footballing news, views and scandal can break before the programme is printed. We all want to consume our news now – this is the prime reason why traditional hard-copy newspaper circulation has fallen so dramatically and a match programme often con-
tains nothing new to the reader. To many fans, buying a programme is seen as an essential part of going to a game. But like every other element of the game, it needs to get with the times. This is why from the start of the 2018/19 season, Lewes FC will not be publishing a matchday programme. Instead, we will be producing a ground-breaking matchday publication in the form of an e-programme. As soon as fans enter The Dripping Pan on a matchday they will be able to access the digital content, which will include the traditional elements such as a preview of our opponents, match reviews, details of forthcoming away trips and information on what is going on at the club. However, we will be mixing this text-based content with video interviews from our management team, players and the Chairman, previews recorded by visiting fans, and much more. We know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but Lewes have always been about innovation and pushing the envelope for football clubs everywhere. We believe we will be the only club to do this in England and whilst we will be reducing some of our operational costs, we will hopefully be setting the standard for the future of the football programme. The e-programme opens up a whole new world of opportunities, not only for the club but also for the reader. I’m not a traditionalist but likewise I understand the place for the humble football programme and those who will rally against embracing the digital age. Technology can deliver reduce costs, increased revenues and a wider readership for every club, big or small. But are we ready and brave enough to embrace it? We think so but don’t just take my word for it, have a look yourself.

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
