THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Welcome to Whitehawk FC for today’s National Non-League Day game with Sevenoaks Town.
Wadhams making himself an instant hero after his debut goal the week before at VCD.
It’s a particularly warm welcome to East Brighton Park to officials and fans from Kent, as well as the Whitehawk Foodbank. We enjoyed excellent hospitality at The Bourne Stadium in December and wish all our visitors a safe journey home.
National Non-League Day is a weekend when we all join together across the country to celebrate all the good things about football at this level - one of which is the close relationship between the players, management and supporters. Nowhere is that truer than at our club. Our fans have stuck with the team through some of the disappointments this season and we know that a positive attitude from the terraces gives us more chance of overcoming setbacks and keeping going. Thanks to all of you.
Although we won the away game at Sevenoaks convincingly, it will be a much-changed side enjoying a revival under new manager Harry Hudson that we’ll be up against today. One of many new signings in their team is our former left-back Charles Banya, a player who was much admired during his time here. Our team is having their own mini revival with two wins on the bounce, so with momentum and confidence meaning so much in football, we hope to be able to keep the run going today. When we fell behind last week, we showed great spirit against a good side to recover and take the three points. Ashley

Howl from the hills, shout from the sands; it’s time for NonLeague Day! Ah yes, that wonderful weekend when Mark Pougatch’s dulcet tones softly hum through the nation. The spotlight is on England, but those with a seething passion for football opt for the quainter settings and bobbly pitches at this time of year. LAST TIME OUT Revitalised by a first win in 98 days at VCD Athletic the week prior, high-flying Ramsgate were next to surrender the sword as the Hawks continue to rejoice in some late season form. David Ijaha donned the red shirt of Whitehawk once more as he started in the midfield following his switch from Dartford. But in the Spring sun the Hawks offered little attacking threat in the opening half, as the Kentish visitors opened the scoring shortly after the restart. Tijan Jadama was presented with the ball mere yards from the goal to slam home the opener after Ashley Miller worked the ball crisply across
the face. But the hosts would fight back. Another defensive slip allowed Javaun Splatt to poke it past goalkeeper Jacob Russell, before the forward stroked it effortlessly into the netting. And as the harsh winds and renewed confidence revitalised Whitehawk the second arrived shortly after through a wonderfully struck Ashley Wadhams thunderbolt that flew between post and paw to hand the Hawks the win. THE OPPOSITION The appointment of manager Harry Hudson last month has brought a breath of fresh air to the town of Sevenoaks. An almost unrecognisable XI to the one that were comfortably defeated by Whitehawk in early December, there is a strong sense of optimism as they attempt to pull themselves out of relegation trouble. Whilst their home form has been drastically transformed — respective 3-1 and 4-1 triumphs over Herne Bay and VCD Athletic — Hudson is yet to record a first three points away from The Bourne Stadium.
Positioned in the relegation playoff position of 18th and lying a mere four points off the Hawks, it is another afternoon with significant league implications. Since his switch to Sevenoaks in February, Freddie Parker has recorded three goals in four games, including a brace in the impressive performance over VCD last weekend with the forward likely to lead the line once more. PREVIOUS MEETINGS That aforementioned fixture in the early days of the most festive of months saw the Hawks strike on three separate occasions as they departed north-west Kent with a richly deserved three points. Alex Malins scored on debut, before Peter Gregory and Billie Clark capped off a fine afternoon in the bitter chill. On The Oaks’ previous venture down to the coast the spoils were very much shared as Ahmed Abdulla struck through a crowded box to fire the Hawks into a 30th minute lead, but Dan Parkinson rescued a point for the visitors late on. whitehawk vs sevenoaks town

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
LAST WEEK, we at NLP Towers received an email from the father of an 11-year-old football enthusiast who has found a passion for Non-League. Young Jack Arnfield had just come back from watching his local team, Stalybridge Celtic take on Northern Premier rivals Workington and had written a report on his visit for us to browse. On reading it, it struck us straight away that enticing the likes of Jack to football at this level is the exact reason that James Doe suggested the idea of a Non-League Day back in 2010. So, with Non-League Day returning after a two-year Covid absence this weekend, what better way to do our bit than to put Jack’s account into the print, making the young man’s day at the same time. “One of the beauties of NonLeague football is that you can hear [witty] conversations all over the ground with rival fans sat so close to each other and no need for away sections,” Jack wrote. “It is sad that 73,000 people
chose to go to Old Trafford but only 400 decided to visit Bower Fold last Saturday. “Only 11 miles separate the two grounds and I wish more people would get down and support teams like Stalybridge Celtic rather than go to Premier League games or worse just watch them on TV. “When you buy a programme or a drink it’s helping that club to survive, it’s not going to some mega-rich person in another country. “All the volunteers that keep clubs running at lower levels deserve our support so get to your local non-league ground on Saturday!” We couldn’t put it better ourselves, Jack! Once again, clubs have been pulling out all the stops in support of Non-League Day, while their big brothers from the Premier League and Championship take the weekend off due to the international break. Ticket offers and often bizarre incentives – free mushrooms at Bungay FC being my particular favourite – are employed to bring in the punters and the
results in previous years have shown to reap rewards with clubs often announcing record crowds. This year is no different with various offers and special events taking place up and down the country. Harrow Borough, for example, have dished out free tickets for their Isthmian Premier Division visit of Bowers & Pitsea to several local schools, and offered halfprice entry for Premier League and EFL season ticket holders, as well as those attending the England v Switzerland game just down the road at Wembley later in the day. It’s free also for Under16s and to NHS and Emergency Service workers and the Armed Forces. The majority of supporters reading this will have already caught the Non-League bug but you too can play your part. By just bringing one friend, work colleague or member of the family you are spreading the word and helping your local football club to become a vital cog in the community wheel. Happy Non-League Day everyone. whitehawk vs sevenoaks town

As the last bulk of bodies shimmied through the gate and out onto the radiant setting that stood before them, a sense of the familiar flooded through to their minds. Months have passed with those hanging grey clouds above, shivering skins on seats that matched the mood of Whitehawk’s recent skid. Welcome to Spring, welcome to success. With the rising temperatures the Hawks have come out to play. Free from the nest, victories of back-to-back proportion were recorded for the first time since November 13. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel. With the wind, the slope, and the swirling noise 8

galvanising a side that at the interval would have been content with a point, the distant dream soon became a reality. Making that long sweeping journey through cities, villages and many a field were those from Thanet. Sitting high and mighty in third position it was inevitable a thorny Ramsgate side would grace The Enclosed Ground’s gorgeous green surface with their pace and incisiveness. In the squawking stands the usual band of laughs and scarves hung in the air. And by the end those smiles slipped out from the ground, and onto the streets of Brighton. But back to 3pm. Winds harsh, sun bright. A minute’s silence impeccably observed. The Hawks matched the Rams on the pitch – a
battle typically orchestrated in some fantasy novel, now depicted within shouting distance of everyone’s beloved Marina. Another new body in the midfield: David Ijaha returning to the club he once captained, breaking up play and spraying the ball with a degree of delight until whisked off in the 78th minute. First it was Olly Munt seeing a hurried spank slap the gloves of the awakened Jacob Russell. His defence sleepy to Omarr Lawson’s drifting movement, an early warning had been sounded around the quaintness. Ringing true was the presence of Joshua Ajayi. More league goals than he has years on this planet, the division’s top scorer was ravenous as he feasted on a laborious backline….but to little avail. The speedy Ashley Miller was to take first advantage of Whitehawk’s interesting highline; Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke hopping off his line suppressed the oncoming threat as Miller raced through. A rather fluid opening phase, the excitement had evaporated to leave a more stale taste on the tongue. Operating along the right channel moved Ramsgate, only for the robust bodies of Adam El-Abd and Tyrese Mthunzi to lower the xG. Only the occasional ‘uh oh’ from the chanting supporters as the half drew nearer. The second helping had to be slicker from the host’s perspective. The elements would prove valuable in their quest.
Splatt capitalised on a woeful Jamie Coyle clearance to equalise minutes later. A gift of the highest order, Splatt’s toe took it away from Russell’s grasp before composing, finishing, dancing in the sunlight. A firm fist in the air to match the Din’s noise, now this conflict was equal, now the Hawks were sensing a second. Momentum swung, pinball in the visiting box as a result of Munt’s crisp corner. Neither the foot of the fresh Daniel Thompson or the inside of Splatt’s shoe could force the ball over the line. Corner. Another Munt ball, this time it fails to beat the first man, but out to Ashley Wadhams it falls. Confidence still dripping from his debut last goal last Saturday, here he is to adroitly crash the ball into the saggy nettage. Every lace caught that one. Fizzing through the air at great speeds it screams between the post and paw to send Whitehawk on their way with little over fifteen minutes remaining. Time for strong minds, stronger legs as they neared a famous victory over promotion-chasing opposition.
Game management superb, Henry Muggeridge’s booming vocals made sure of that as Stroomberg-Clarke was seldom tested. A dose of crosses dealt with, the hearts were in the mouths just the once as the Hawks’ ‘keeper clung onto Jadama’s point-blank That is, after Ramsgate stormed into the lead header in the dying seconds. through the powerful right boot of Tijan JadThat’s the whistle. But timely ahead of next weekend’s Non-League the Whitehawk heads remained elevated. league REVIEW
BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Twelve points the gap, but the battle for the play off places- and the fight against the drop- are far from over. Hastings United looked as if they might be facing a potential banana skin when Three Bridges arrived at Pilot Field yesterday. Bridges were six matches unbeaten, including victories over United’s promotion rivals Cray Valley PM, Haywards Heath Town and Ashford United, and certainly weren’t travelling to the seaside nursing an inferiority complex- but in the end it didn’t matter, as our champions-elect remained in total control of their own destiny with a two-nil win. The goals both came early, Ben Pope’s header on five minutes and a goal from Finn O’Mara on twenty putting the hosts in charge in front of a crowd of one thousand, four hundred and sixteen. That turned out to be that- although Hastings did miss a spot kick- and with only one of the four sides directly below them winning the gap between United and the rest got even bigger. Ashford United, in second place, could only draw at Sittingbourne. The Brickies went ahead early, Toby Bancroft scoring after eight minutes, but when Adem Ramadan equalised with twenty five minutes left the away support must have hoped for more. They didn’t get it, and had to be content with a point. Ramsgate would have loved to have taken a point. Our third place side lost for the second time this week, this time at Whitehawk, who are finally moving away from the bottom three. The Rams went ahead eleven minutes after the break, Tijan Jadama opening the scoring, but the Hawks hit back almost immediately when their talisman Javaun Splatt got his sixteenth of the season, and with seventeen minutes remaining Ashley Wadhams, on from the bench, scored for the second match in succession to lift his side to thirteenth. The Rams stay third, but only on goal difference as Cray Valley PM won our match of the day at Haywards Heath Town by the odd goal in five to move up to fourth, getting the latest of late winners. It looked like three points were a formality when Marcel Barrington and Anthony Edgar put the Millers two up as we approached the end of the first half, but Oliver Allen got one back just before the break and Tom Cadman equalised immediately after it. Heath failed
from the spot eight minutes from time, and into the last minute we went with no further goals, before Matthew A-Warren popped up with a late winner. Heath drop to fifth. Herne Bay were also in Sussex, and what a trip they had, moving to within a point of the top five- with a game in hand- by hammering Lancing six-one. Rory Smith opened the scoring on thirteen minutes, and then we had the Zak Ansah show, the striker scoring three goals in twenty four minutes just before and after the break to make it four-nil. Modou Jammeh got one back with sixteen minutes remaining, but any hopes the Lancers had of a more respectable scoreline were dashed when Brad Schafer and Smith once more made it five and six in the last ten minutes. Burgess Hill Town’s play off aspirations also look to be over as they lost a five goal thriller against East Grinstead Town. The Wasps ended a run of five straight defeats and got their first win in eight, and they did so with a late winner from Andrew Briggs, his second goal of the afternoon coming very late indeed. VCD Athletic, starting the day in ninth, travelled to Sevenoaks Town, who remain third from bottom but look to be in the best form of any of the sides fighting for relegation and have given themselves a real chance of survival. Vickers went ahead on fourteen minutes through Youssef Bamba, but that was as good as it got for the visitors as Freddie Parker hit back with two before the break, and Brad Ryan and another Bamba, Yahaya, made it three and four after the restart. Phoenix Sports, buoyed by their win at Ashford United and having only lost two of their last seven, found themselves hit by a hammer blow as they welcomed Chichester City. Their visitors may have had nothing to play for but pride, but they had plenty of that, hitting four goals without reply. Josh Clack and Kaleem Haitham got the first two in the nine minutes before the break, Clack got another on sixty four minuteshis fourth in five matches- and Callum Overton got number four, four minutes from time.

OUR VISITORS
WE LOOK AT TODAY’S VISITORS TO THE TERRAPURA GROUND Sevenoaks Town FC was originally formed in 1883 and they were founder members of the original Kent League, but they left after just one season and wouldn’t return for another 110 years.
Deal Town. Their longest run in the competition came in the final season they were eligible, 2017-18, when they made it to the third round proper before losing 3-1 away to Thatcham Town.
There are few existing records of the club during that era, but it is known that on 26 April 1893 they played Royal Arsenal, who were at the time the only professional team in the South of England, with over 1,000 spectators watching the game. In 1906 the club, now known as Sevenoaks Town, became one of the founder members of the Sevenoaks League. In 1951 Town amalgamated with another local club, St. John’s United, and became members of the Kent Amateur League (Western Region), which they won on two occasions. In 1984 the Kent Amateur League was re-organised as the Kent County League and Sevenoaks were the first Premier Division champions, a feat they repeated in seasons 1995–96 and 2002–03.
Since achieving promotion to the Isthmian League, Town have switched to the FA Trophy. In their first ever match in the competition in 2018-19 they beat former Conference side Grays Athletic 4-2 before losing 2-1 away to Dorking Wanderers, who went on to win the Isthmian Premier Division, in the first qualifying round.
After over a century playing in almost exclusively amateur leagues, Sevenoaks applied for promotion to the semi-professional Kent League after winning the 02-03 title. Their first season in the county’s senior league ended with a respectable 11th place and included a memorable victory away to former Football League side Maidstone United, when they recovered from a 3-1 half-time deficit to win 4-3. The move to senior level also meant Sevenoaks were eligible for FA competitions. Their first appearance in the FA Vase came in 2004-05, when they lost 2-1 at home to 20
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
In the FA Cup Town’s best performance came in 2016-17 when they took Chesham to a replay in the second qualifying round and although they’ve yet to meet Football League opposition, one of their most memorable ties came in 2008-09 when they held Folkestone Invicta to a 4-4 draw at Greatness Park in the preliminary round. Town led 2-0 and 3-2 but were trailing 4-3 in stoppage time when a free-kick from Dwayne Gibbons earned them a replay, which they eventually lost 4-1. After a decade during which their highest league position was sixth in 2009-10, Town appointed the former Dartford and Tonbridge player Micky Collins as manager for the 2014-15 season. In 2017-18, having installed a 3G pitch, they won what had since been renamed the Southern Counties East League, for the first time ever and with it promotion to the Isthmian League, coming tenth in their first season, their highest ever position on the pyramid.

NON LEAGUE DAY 2022
Non-League Day was set up by James Doe in 2010 as a social media experiment, after being inspired by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queens Park Rangers play at Tavistock.
run, with money taken at the turnstiles often funding thriving youth set-ups, projects and facilities which are of benefit to the whole community.
It has now grown to become an annual part of the football calendar, backed by Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the nonleague clubs themselves and the fans who turn up on the day.
The level of skill on offer at non-league grounds might not be the same as that at the Etihad Stadium or Stamford Bridge, for example, but there are other sides to the experience, from which the smaller club will always win hands down.
Always scheduled to coincide with an international break, Non-League Day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable volunteer-led community football while giving fans across the country the chance to show support for their local non-league side. Many non-league clubs are almost exclusively volunteer 22

The vast majority of games still kick off at 3pm, ticket prices are realistic, you can often stand (and drink!) anywhere in the ground and will always be guaranteed a warm welcome by people who run their clubs for a love of the game. Whether you’re a Premier League or Championship fan without a game, a League One or League Two supporter who can’t make an away trip, or
just someone who is curious about what their local club has to offer, there is sure to be something to interest everyone. Clubs and fans across the country are gearing up for this season’s big day on Saturday with more record attendances expected to be smashed. Non-League Day has been a major success each year since Doe launched the idea, which coincidences with an international break to encourage football fans to attend a Non-League game. “It does seem to grow each year and the pressures and demands that come with that are increasing,” he explained. “There’s still a long way to go, some clubs still don’t know about it, some fans, and there’s plenty of room for growth. Non-League Day is a celebration of all that’s good about Non-League.”

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
