THE HAWKS CHAIRMAN WRITES FOR THE PROGRAMME Happy New Year from everyone at Whitehawk Football Club as we welcome you to today’s home game with Three Bridges. It’s a warm Whitehawk welcome to East Brighton Park for the officials and supporters from West Sussex, as well as our former midfield player and Bridges U18 manager Brannon O’Neill. Ex-Hawks Curtis Gayler and James Waters have also appeared for the visitors this season. We have a long history with Three Bridges, who first played on this ground in 1955 in the Sussex County League. The two clubs have met across three different divisions since and were relegated together from County League 1 in 1977. Three of our most famous players, Darren Freeman, Kevin Townsend (Senior) and Bert Bassett, played for both clubs.
17 goals. Bridges were last here for the final game before the first lockdown in February 2020. We won 8-1 with their keeper being somewhat harshly sent off within the first 30 seconds and ex-Hawk John Lansdale having to play in goal. The previous encounter at Jubilee Field was also a remarkable game, with the Hawks turning round a 3-1 half-time deficit to register a 5-3 win. Lucas Rodrigues came off the bench to claim a hat-trick in just over 20 minutes. In truth, that game was end-to-end and could have finished any score. Your support can make all the difference, especially when not everything is going our way, so please stay safe, enjoy the match and get right behind the team and have a safe journey home. ISAAC GLEAVE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY’S ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST FIXTURE No sooner after strolling off a worn Haywards Heath lawn are the Hawks emerging from the tunnel of their own as another fresh opponent visit The Enclosed Ground…whoever said players need rest? Turn the attention briskly to Three Bridges, where fond memories of their previous venture still lingers in the air above. It’s certainly safe to type that much has occurred in this life and this world since that final game prior to the initial lockdown. Few would have speculated in the aftermath of that 8-1 mauling in early March the sheer scale of what was about to rip through the lives of us all. Whilst thankful for those brilliant minds who put our own minds at greater ease, it is always important to reflect on the many that were not so fortunate. For all those who lived and breathed football, where 3pm on a Saturday afternoon was their favourite time of the week, it is they who will fly high and proud with the white hawk in the clouds above for an eternity to follow. LAST TIME OUT Right, to the football at hand and it’s 13th vs 15th with just the single point separating the Sussex competitors. But first, a brief dive into the most recent of pasts with a moment
to reflect on Whitehawk’s New Year’s Day 0-0 at Haywards Heath Town. Certainly not without its respective energy — a tad surprising provided its context — chances came…and speedily went on a consistent basis. It was fun stuff; an entertaining goalless draw that could indubitably have swung in either direction.
Bridges’ have been involved in a league-high nine stalemates thus far, three more than the next highest in that category. But it was defeat that befell them on the swap of the calendars: East Grinstead Town claiming all three points at Jubilee Field courtesy of Andrew Briggs and a late Alex Battle spot-kick.
Both defences persistently resolute, Nathan StroombergClarke was particularly astute between the posts, rescuing his side on a number of occasions. But at the opposite end Billy Collings was in equally fine form, thwarting Javaun Splatt and Billie Clark as the Hawks pushed for a winner that would never arrive. New addition Alex Laing entered the fray in the second half, and displayed signs of encouragement for Ross Standen as his side move deeper into the season.
Dan Perry is clear as the club’s leading goalscorer with a valiant seven, whilst Curtis Gayler and the expertly named Ben Bacon each have three in the Isthmian League thus far, as the former recorded two in their recent 4-2 victory over Sevenoaks Town.
THE OPPOSITION Sliding down the A23 are Three Bridges, destined for East Brighton with four defeats from their previous five league fixtures. Whitehawk winless in the four that precede Monday’s contest, it’s a tale of two out of form contingents desperate to see their first triumph of the new year.
PREVIOUS MEETING Well, this was a one-sided affair. As the pandemic rolled in the Hawks were breathless in the final instalment of the 2019/20 campaign. Eight times was the Three Bridges netting rippled; ‘keeper Kieron Thorp seeing a red card in the first minute. They would finish with just nine men as Tadley Bromage was dismissed late on, but by then Whitehawk had already struck seven times: Ahmed Abdulla recording a first half hat-trick, before a brace from Lucas Rodrigues and Marvin Hamilton was accompanied by a late, rare, wonderful strike from an elated Luke Emberson.

WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
THE APPEAL of football at Christmas showed its popularity once more even in challenging conditions for supporters. Despite Omicron cases rising over 100,000 in England and the weather being as wet and windy as ever, fans still turned out in big numbers for the festive fixtures. Attendances in Non-League have been impressive after fears the pandemic may put off some spectators returning to matches. But football – coupled with the hard work of club volunteers – has shown it can be a safe space. The failed European Super League plan is likely to have also benefitted the lower levels with some supporters turning their back on the top-flight. Non-League’s affordability remains as does the ‘real’ feel of attending matches and standing on terraces. The game as these levels is continuing to grow and the Boxing Day schedule provided further proof of that. Stockport County welcomed 8,896 for their Boxing Day clash with Altrincham. It was the highest crowd on the day outside of the Championship and the club’s biggest league attendance since 2008.
Elsewhere in the National League, there was 3,830 at Torquay United in their game against Yeovil Town. A crowd of 3,759 was at Hayes Lane for Bromley’s televised fixture with Southend United as 3,699 took in the local derby between Aldershot Town and Woking. In National League North, AFC Fylde and Chorley had 2,608 spectators while the derby between Spennymoor Town and Darlington saw a crowd of 2,404. There was also 2,082 at AFC Telford United for the visit of Chester. Dorking Wanderers welcomed a record crowd of 2,048 on National League South and put on a show with an 8-0 victory over promotion rivals Havant & Waterlooville. Tonbridge Angels had the next highest of 1,669 against Maidstone United followed by Oxford City with 1,208. The Northern Premier League had a combined total of more than 30,000 in attendance for their final games of the year on December 27th. There were ten four-figure crowds across the four divisions, including more than 2,000 at FC United, Matlock Town and Marine. A total of 12,213 fans went through the turnstiles in the 11 Premier Division games, averaging at 1,110 per game. In the West Division, the
average crowd was even bigger coming in at 1,155 across the seven games, including a 2,150 sell-out for Marine’s local derby with Bootle, who won 3-0. There were 1,679 at Clitheroe for their 5-1 win over Colne, while 1,100 saw Leek Town win away at Kidsgrove Athletic. There was a four-figure crowd in the East Division too, where Marske United lost at home to Stockton Town in front of 1,250. Horsham hosted 1,284 for their fixture with Lewes in the Isthmian League Premier while 1,314 were at Bury Town against Stowmarket Town in the North division. In the South East, Herne Bay won 7-2 against Whitstable Town in front of 1,119. Banbury United attracted their biggest league attendance for 52 years of 1,221. The Southern League Premier Central leaders beat Stratford Town 1-0. Bromsgrove Sporting had 1,658 against Stourbridge and Hednesford drew 1,142 for their game with Rushall Olympic. Phoenix club Macclesfield FC, at Step 5, had the biggest attendance on December 27 of 4,353. The depth, and support, of the English pyramid continues to be incredible.

WHITEHAWK
SATURDAY 1 JANUARY 2022 | HANBURY PARK | ATT: 492 | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SOUTH EAST BY ISAAC GLEAVE
There can be little shying away from the fact that 2021 was not the year of the Hawk. For every opposition Whitehawk have blown away, it has not been sufficiently followed up on a consistent basis. Saturday marked the turn of a new year, a new life for Brighton’s non-league contingent. Throughout the years of recent time this club has journeyed up and down the various tables of England’s football pyramid. For it to thrive they must not rush into anything, taking every game one step at a time. And with the first kicks of 2022, Ross Standen stands proud in the hissing rain after his side’s stalemate with Haywards Heath Town. Indeed, a platform for further success. Oddly mild, pleasant nonetheless, the high cloud catered for low light as a flash of the bulbs above signalled the commencement of fresh beginnings. 8
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
A single change to that side defeated by Hastings United in narrow margin: Ollie Munt finding himself on the right side of a midfield at the expense of Peter Gregory. Whitehawk in their accustomed red; Haywards Heath in their jazzy blue and white as a fine, boisterous crowd crammed into Hanbury Stadium – half of those children, the other half with increasingly aching heads. A luscious green pitch tucked cosily amongst the swarm of nearby houses, the dawn of a renewed era was upon us. It began with good pace – the zippy, moist turf owing to some fluidity. ‘The Blues’ gameplan was clear: high-press, high-line. Whitehawk had to move the ball quickly and precisely if they were to succeed. The story was reminiscent of Ramsgate, where the Hawks were forced under immense pressure, and paid the ultimate price…three times. But here things
were a little different. In fact, quite the opposite as Billie Clark sneaked behind the defence, sprinted furiously past Hamish Morrison towards goal before seeing a net-destined strike slap the trailing arm of Billy Collings. Frenetic, fast, entertaining. Rewardless, however. So whilst Whitehawk were seeing less of the ball but more of the goal, the hosts from the Heath were faced with a sturdy wall of red. Painted by the force of Adam El-Abd and Alex Malins, the stalwarts worked tirelessly to deny an increasing wave of attacks. With gratitude to his defence, Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke was not troubled until midway through the opening half, stooping low to collect Tom Cadman’s tame attempt on the turn. Soon enough the bubbles of energy returned, Standen’s side bearing the brunt. Stroomberg-Clarke receiving the let-off of his young life as Jerson Dos Santos failed miserably to capitalise on the ‘keeper’s scuffed clearance with the goal at his mercy. Pressure relentless, but it would turn a touch in the visiting favour. That is, after Stroomberg-Clarke had prevented Davigildo Cravid’s piledriver and Josh Clack’s rebound from billowing the netting. Yep, move on deeper into the half to find the ol’ Lawson-Munt combination in full procession: the former glancing his header tantalisingly wide of Collings’ left-upright following the latter’s delicious cross into the box. Exhale, inhale, exhale…that’s the half and, somehow, not a goal to show for it. The right kind of football for the defensive purist up in Haywards Heath.
Laing. The nippy forward found himself floating in positive areas, and he came within the other limb of Collings of being the instant catalyst. For you see, it was his knock-down inside the area that gifted Splatt a clear opening: firing down and straight at the busy goalkeeper. Off his boot and away to safety it veered. Thoughts of a few hundred believing that for no matter how hard each side tried, this one was always going to end without a spark. Far into the evening darkness and further into the battle, the dying hopes of mid-Sussex raptures was but a sumptuous Stroomberg-Clarke save away from defibrillation. Oh, what a delightful cross it was from the left, curling and swirling onto the onrushing laces of Sam Remfry who struck wickedly at goal. Not today, my good chum. Like a cat thrown into a bathtub, Stroomberg-Clarke leaped instinctively to his right to paw the ball away, and provide his side with a deserved, breathless point. A New Years Day stalemate. In the growing pages of Whitehawk’s history this will be but a brief chapter at initial glance. But think not, as this read far more than its monotonous scoreline. This was a rapid game of chess between two masters of the board. Those between the posts in exquisite form, defences prevailed under the January lights on the turning of a new calendar.
Dim the clouds and return from the warmth, Cravid had seemingly yet to climatise as his frozen feet permitted Luke Emberson from robbing the ball yards from an empty goal after Stroomberg-Clarke had parried Clack’s lolloping volley into his path. A desperately lucky escape, but the Blues would not be without their own God smiling down on them. It had been a muted game for Javaun Splatt in front of goal, but his link-up play with fellow colleagues had been quietly admirable. Here he was, carrying the ball through a scattered midfield before arriving at the final resistance. A cross that just about discovered Clark, the fledgling winger opted for a shot on the spin, low and hard at Collings who got enough limb on it for the ball to squirm and spin to the wrong side of the post. Agonising for Clark, tortuous for the vocal Hawks immediately behind the frame. Swiftly the Hawks were in the ascendancy. Still hotly contested, and still the possibility of every result, Standen sent on his newest weapon: Alex whitehawk vs THREE BRIDGES

BY IAN TOWNSEND (ISTHMIAN.CO.UK) Hastings open a four point gap as their closest rivals fail to win- whilst Vickers shock the Millers and the Rams trample their seaside rivals Leaders Hastings United were kept at bay for sixty eight minutes by visitors Lancing, but finally took the lead on sixty nine when Jack Dixon opened the scoring- and held on for three points which takes them four points clear at the top. A superb two thousand and seventeen fans turned up to watch- a total bettered only by Pitching In Isthmian Premier Division Worthing. Second place Ashford United got the start they’d have hoped for against Faversham Town when Gary Lockyer put them ahead after just three minutes. The Lilywhites drew level eleven minutes after the break through Clark Woodcock, but only four minutes after that Tashi-Jay Kwayie restored the Nuts and Bolts lead. That lead slipped again, however, as Jono Richardson equalised twelve minutes from time, and the Nuts and Bolts stay second but lost ground on the leaders. Cray Valley PM welcomed VCD Athletic, and were rather too welcoming when Anthony Adesite gave Vickers the lead on twenty one minutes. The next goal was crucial, and it again went to the visitors, Youssef Bamba making it two- and the points were confirmed when Ayman El-Mogharbel made it three, four minutes from time. The Millers stay third, but are four points off the summit. Herne Bay got seven on Monday, and were quickly ahead at Hythe Town, Dan Johnson scoring after fourteen minutes- but they weren’t ahead for long, Luca Woodhouse equalising three minutes later. Kieron Campbell restored the visitors lead nine minutes before the break, but there was no runaway victory this time, the Cannons pushing them all the way in the search for an equaliser. It didn’t come, and Bay are fourth. Whitstable Town had a torrid time on Monday, and New Years Day didn’t start well for them either, Ramsgate scoring after five minutes, Tijan Jadama with his third of the campaign. Ollie Bate made it two nine minutes after half time, and then the Oyster-
boys fell apart, Ashley Miller making it three, and Joshua Ajayi making it four in the sixty fifth minute. The hosts got themselves together again and Muhammed Cham reduced the arrears five minutes from time, but that was no more than a consolation as the Rams end the day in fifth. Haywards Heath Town slip to sixth after their match with Whitehawk ended goalless. It took an hour for a goal to arrive as Sittingbourne hosted Sevenoaks Town, and when it arrived it came to the Brickies, Toby Bancroft- on the pitch for only five minutes- giving them the lead. The visitors couldn’t find an equaliser, and ended the day with ten men after Fjord Rogers, back from Cray Wanderers, saw red. Phoenix Sports have looked much improved of late, but that didn’t stop Oscar Housego putting Corinthian ahead after eight minutes. Only Ashford United managed to defeat Corinthian during December, and the hoops showed why, holding on for another three points which sees them end the day in tenth place. Three Bridges welcomed East Grinstead Town in the A264 derby, and it was the Wasps who stung first, Andrew Briggs opening the scoring immediately after half time. The equaliser arrived nine minutes later, Camron Lawson with the goal, but it was next strike Town as Alex Battle scored from the spot on seventy two minutes. A late Bridges onslaught came to naught, and the Wasps took all three points.

OUR VISITORS
WE LOOK AT TODAY’S VISITORS TO THE TERRAPURA GROUND Founded in 1901, Three Bridges joined the Mid Sussex Football League in 1902 and were Champions of that League for the first time in the 1907/08 season. Their first major success came in 1933/34, when they won the Sussex Junior Cup, and sundry other minor honours came their way before they joined the Sussex County Football League in 1952/53, and two years later were crowned Second Division Champions. In 1962/63 they won the Division Two Invitation Cup and in 1968/69, 1973/74 and 1979/80 were Second Division Runners Up. 1970/71 produced an against the odds triumph when winning the League’s Invitation Cup against Southwick (3-2). The 1980s heralded a run of successes, starting with reaching the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in 1981/82 before losing at Molesey (1-2). A season later they made it to the last 32 but also won the Sussex RUR Charity Cup for the first time, beating Hastings Town 3-2. Another year on saw them finish runners up in the Thorn EMI National six-a-side tournament, winning a set of floodlights. 1985/86 saw them finish as County League Division One runners up, a feat they repeated in both 1987/88 (when they also won the RUR Cup again) and 1988/89. A fire destroyed their clubhouse in 1993 which re-focused their priorities and ultimately resulted in relegation in 1996/97. They won the Division 2 League Cup a season later and then finished runners up in Division 2 to regain Division 1 status. They were RUR Cup runners up in 2003/04 and then winners of that same prestigious trophy in 2007/08. In season 2010/11 hopes were high when they started by winning their first nine League games, but eventually finished the season in 5th place. However they did win the John O’Hara League Challenge Cup for the first time that season, beating Rye United 2-1, a tremendous feat that they 20
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
achieved again in 2011/12, this time AFC Uckfield being defeated 2-1. It looked like being another tough League campaign when they lost four of the first nine matches, but then lost only one of the remaining 29 games, which was concluded by beating Championship rivals Rye United 1-0 at home on the final day of the season! This tremendous run meant the club had achieved its ambition and become Sussex County Football League Champions. With a superb run in the FA Vase too, losing in the last 32 on a penalty shoot out with Derbyshire side, Gresley FC, the 2011/12 ‘Double’ season had undoubtedly been the best in Three Bridges’ history. Their first season in the Ryman Isthmian Football League South Division saw them struggle for much of the time. However, having been 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table in mid February, they went on a run of 11 matches that produced 7 victories, 2 draws and just 2 defeats, earning them Team of the Month Awards in both March and April as a result. It meant that they survived the drop, but their second season in the Ryman League saw them struggle at times again but some key signings midway through the season helped them to 19th place. The 2014/15 season saw an even greater improvement with a healthy mixture of youth and experience guiding them into 7th position and, whilst they were happy to score 94 League goals, they were less than happy about the 95 they conceded! They improved their defensive record in conceding 67 goals in season 2015/16 but only scored 59, hardly helped by long-term injuries to strike partners Allan Tait and Tony Garrod. With 66 points, they slumped to 14th position, although they only accumulated 6 points fewer than in the previous campaign! Bridges maintained most of that season’s squad for the 2016/17 campaign. However, with at least 11 first team players out injured by September, they had to use a lot of the U21s, Academy and
U18s players and by November had lost 12 games in a row, drew three and won just one game. Towards the end of the season, they strengthened the squad but it was too late to avoid relegation. For the 2017/18 season, Bridges kept a few of the best of the players from the previous season and strengthened the team with more experienced players in the hope of promotion once again. Having dispensed with the services of Simon Wormull, Paul Hammond and Danny Lee from the coaching team and folding the Academy team, Bridges also strengthened the management team with the additions of the experienced ex-Bridges player, Martin Dynan as Assistant Manager, and UEFA ‘A’ licensed Coach, Marc Wardley. That season turned out to be an extremely tough one with every team wanting to beat us. However, Bridges accomplished what they set out to do by gaining promotion back to the Isthmian League having finished second place in the Southern Combination League Premier Division, just one point behind the winners, Haywards Heath Town, and despite having only lost 3 games all season. After serving 25 years with the Club as a manager, Paul Faili stood down as First Team Manager for the 2018/19 season in order to concentrate on his role as Club Chairman, and handed the management reins over to Martin Dynan, assisted by Liam Collins alongside Keith George. He also recruited a new U23s manager in Oliver Saunders, another UEFA ‘A’ licensed coach, to work closely with the First Team in developing both the U23s and U18s. After losing 8 out of 12 League games by the end of November, as well as being knocked out of all four cup competitions (FA Cup, FA Trophy, League Cup and Sussex Senior Cup), the future looked bleak for Martin Dynan.
However, the team then went on an unbeaten run in December, earning Martin the League’s Manager of the Month Award. Unfortunately, that didn’t last and Martin’s demise was inevitable by the end of February, having lost 8 of the last nine games with relegation looming. Paul Faili stepped in for the remaining 9 games of the season attaining 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses – enough for a 14th place finish and 14 points clear of relegation. Paul remained as Manager, ably assisted by Keith George and coached by Jamie Crellin who played for the Club for five seasons, but sadly had to hang up his boots after sustaining an ankle injury early in the 2018/19 season, after making 164 appearances for the Club. Oliver Saunders remained as U23s Manager, assisted by Tom Hayward who had been involved with the U18s as both Assistant Manager and Manager over the previous four seasons, while First Team player, Brannon O’Neill, was appointed as U18s Manager. Sadly Oliver decided to move to South Park as First Team Coach in November 2019, following Martin Dynan’s appointment there so Tom was appointed as U23s Manager for the remainder of the season. For the 2020/2021 season, the only change was a new manager for the U23s (Development Squad) with Ryan Gayler appointed as Manager and Tom Hayward becoming Vice Chairman. 2021/22 sees Jamie Crellin taking over as First Team Manager, with both Danny Lee and Lee Cole (former Academy manager and coach) returning to the club to join Jamie in the dugout as assistant manager and First Team coach respectively. The U23s have been disbanded but we will have an additional U18s playing in the Southern Combination Football League on Sundays.

COMMUNITY NEWS
WE BRING YOU THE LATEST NEWS FROM AROUND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
Community isn’t simply the people, it’s the spaces in which people live, work, play and organise. Despite the lack of funding, East Brighton Park is a glorious space right on our doorstep. Nestled under the foot of the Downs, right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, East Brighton Park was created in 1925 and is a 60 acre site containing football pitches (the South Coast Ambulance Service uses them to land air ambulance helicopters) tennis courts, a kids’ playground, a fantastic café and plenty of walking and dog friendly space. And it is currently home to a Covid-19 testing station. 22
WHITEHAWK FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Since 1947 it has, of course, been the gateway to The Enclosed. Interestingly, The Enclosed was built on land formerly leased from Brighton Corporation by Brighton College, which, after running into financial difficulties returned the land to the Corporation. Possibly just as interesting, the caravan park – opened in 1938 – was the first municipal camping ground in England.
The Park does have other community uses throughout the year (pandemic permitting). Wild Chalk day is an opportunity to explore the flora and fauna right on our doorstep – which as well as rare flowers, the unique to the area Whitehawk beetle (honest!) badgers, foxes, rabbits, larks, kestrels, the occasional wandering peregrine and red kite, is now home to a pair of Jays!
Those who have seen the film “Oh! What A Lovely War” may recognise the trenches of the Somme, filmed as it was in East Brighton Park. Fortunately, the holes were refilled!
The Park and Sheepcote Valley are well worth exploring. Make the most of this green space on our doorstep. It’s your Club, it’s your community – get involved. #COYH

SUPPORTER INFORMATION The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association. The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
