HOT HOT New NewTitles Titles
April
by Robin Helenthal
It has been said that “April showers bring May flowers” but here at Peoria Public Library, April is bringing a variety of new titles from many of our favorite authors that you will want to check out. The Dream Lover by Elizabeth Berg is a historical fiction novel based on the life of Aurore Dupin who is better known as the notorious female author of the nineteenth century, George Sands. The quote “There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved,” is the focal point of Berg’s novel. The book is part biography and part George Sands fantasy as it alternates between Dupin’s childhood and her adult life. Gathering Prey is John Sanford’s newest thriller and is the latest in the Lucas Davenport series. Davenport’s adopted daughter Letty comes home from college, and receives a phone call from a woman she befriended in San Francisco. The woman is a Traveler, which Sanford describes as “a person who does not like to stay in one place so they move from city to city, panhandling to survive”. The woman tells Letty that her male companion has gone missing and she fears that he has been killed. Lucas travels with Letty to meet up with the woman and they begin a trip into a subculture that is not like any he has encountered. This journey not only puts them in danger but may also change the course of their lives.
The Liar by Nora Roberts is a novel of secrets and danger. Shelby Foxworth finds out that the man she loved and was married to never existed and she has the contents of his safety deposit box, which included multiple IDs, large amounts of money and a gun as proof. When she and her daughter move back to her hometown to start over, her husband’s secrets follow them there and become a threat to not just to her but also her family and friends. Memory Man by David Baldacci introduces Amos Decker, a man whose life is changed dramatically twice. The first time is when a collision in a football game leaves him with a perfect memory. The second is when he comes home and finds his wife, child and brother-in-law murdered. In his devastation, he leaves the police force and ends up on the streets doing the odd private detective stints. A year later, a man confesses to his family’s murder and Decker is called back in to investigate a tragedy where 13 teenagers are gunned down and the killer is still on the loose. When new evidence links the murders, Decker has only one option. Miracle at Augusta by James Patterson & Peter de Jonge begins when a golf amateur wins the PGA Senior Open at Pebble Beach, which shocks the world and him. For Travis McKinley everything should be perfect, but he feels like a fraud. Then he meets a teenage outcast with issues of his own but also has a natural golf swing. Travis mentors the teen and they set out to achieve the impossible on one of the most respected golf courses in the world.

by Cindy Wright You can now check out e-books directly from our new RSA Catalog. To find e-books, go to the Peoria Public Library home page at www.peoriapubliclibrary.org. You can also filter the titles by device, also listed in the left column. Want to read a few pages before checking out an e-book? Liked That Book? Try This One!
by Liesl Prentice Just finished a great read and want something similar? Or perhaps you’re on a long holds list and want to read something now? Here are some recommended read-alikes. NoveList was used as a reference for annotations—for more read-alike suggestions check out the database NoveList Plus at Peoria Public Library or at home with your Peoria Public Library card:
If You Like The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, try: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn: When a woman goes missing on her fifth wedding anniversary, her diary reveals hidden turmoil in her marriage, while her husband, desperate to clear himself of suspicion, realizes that something more disturbing than murder may have occurred. Why you might like it: Possible murders at the center of unsuccessful marriages incite these chilling, fast-paced psychological suspense stories. Both feature multiple unreliable narrators and shocking plot twists. Losing You by Nicci French: Preparing to leave for a vacation, Nina Landry awaits the return of her fifteen-year-old daughter, Charlie, who had spent the night at a friend’s house, but Nina begins to worry when Charlie does not come home and no one takes the disappearance seriously. Why you might like it: A beloved teenage daughter goes missing in Losing You, a stranger (of sorts) in The Girl on the Train. Despite this difference, these compelling psychological suspense novels, each set in England, offer a gripping, twisty story. The Other Woman’s House by Sophia Hanna: A murder seems to have been committed in a house about which a woman named Connie is obsessing. Once Connie discovers the house has been put up for sale she visits it constantly on the real estate website, and during one visit she sees a body, and the bloody evidence of a murder, in the house, but, the police cannot find any sign in the house that a murder took place there. Why you might like it: In these engrossing psychological suspense stories, women who believe they’ve witnessed something shady are personally, dangerously drawn into the ensuing police investigations. Obsession - and real estate - also play a role in both novels.

A Most Familar Caricature: This Month in Peoria History
by Cindy Wright On April 9, 1873, the city of Peoria played host to cartoonist Thomas Nast, who entertained an audience of 800 at Rouse’s Hall. The caricaturist was famous for his cartoons aimed at William M. “Boss” Tweed and the Tammany Hall political machine. Nast would later be remembered for his caricature of Santa Claus that first appeared in 1889. The engraving was titled “Merry Old Santa Claus.” Nast’s image remains as the quintessential Santa figure that children know and love to this day. Among his other lasting credits are his depiction of the Democratic Party as donkeys in1873, and the Republican Party as elephants in 1874, which evolved into the present day party icons. For more information on Thomas Nast, go to the Peoria Public Library website, click Research, then Students, and search in databases such as ABC-CLIO, Britannica Library Online, or Britannica ImageQuest to view some of his cartoons. Rouse’s Hall was built in 1857 by Dr. Rudolphus Rouse (1793-1873) adjacent to his residence which was built twenty years earlier. Doctor Rouse, the second physician to settle in Peoria around 1832, was a surgeon in the War of 1812. Rouse also served as the first village board president in 1835, as well as president of the Illinois State Medical Society. He commissioned Rouse’s Opera Hall (which later was shortened to Rouse’s Hall) to serve as an opera house and public meeting place. Over the years, Rouse’s Hall became the center of Peoria social life and hosted many well-known speakers and performers, including Horace Mann, General Tom Thumb, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, P.T. Barnum, and actor Edwin Booth (whose brother, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated Abraham Lincoln). Rouse’s Hall later became the Main Street Theatre and, in 1917 along with Dr. Rouse’s residence, was eventually razed. Alliance Life then purchased the property and built a tall structure that still stands today as the Commerce Bank Building. (From the archives of the Peoria Public Library.)

The Bibliophiles Book Club will meet on Tuesday, May 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Brain on Fire: My Month in Madness by Susannah Cahalan. An award-winning memoir and instant New York Times bestseller that goes far beyond its riveting medical mystery. Twenty-four-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak with no memory of how she’d gotten there. Days earlier, she had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: at the beginning of her first serious relationship and a promising career at a major New York newspaper. Now she was labeled violent, psychotic, a flight risk. What happened? In a swift and breathtaking narrative, Susannah tells the astonishing true story of her descent into madness, her family’s inspiring faith, and the lifesaving diagnosis that nearly didn’t happen. Intercontinental Readers will continue to meet to discuss novels by American and Irish authors via Skype at Main Library LL1 at 1:00 p.m. once every three months with readers in Ireland. The group will meet Monday, May 18 to discuss Christine Falls by Benjamin Black. In the debut crime novel from the Booker-winning author, a Dublin pathologist follows the corpse of a mysterious woman into the heart of a conspiracy among the city’s high Catholic society to Quirke. One night, Quirke shuffles down into the morgue where he works and finds his brother-in-law, Malachy, altering a file he has no business even reading. The next morning, it looks an awful lot like his brother-in-law, the esteemed doctor, was in fact tampering with a corpse... and concealing the cause of death. It turns out the body belonged to a young woman named Christine Falls. As Quirke presses on toward the true facts behind her death, he comes up against some insidious - and well-guarded - secrets of Dublin’s high Catholic society, among them members of his own family. The Read On Book Club will meet Tuesday, March 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Branch to discuss Revelation by Maria McKenzie. Call 497-2601 for more information.

The Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Touch & Go by Lisa Gardner. When Justin and Libby Denbe, along with their beautiful 15-yearold daughter, disappear, investigator Tessa Leone must race against time to expose the Denbes’ darkest secrets to discover who would want to kidnap such a perfect little family and how far they are willing to go.
Club Read will meet on Wednesday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Chosen by Chaim Potok . This first novel, ostensibly about the friendship between two boys, Reuven and Danny, from the time when they are fourteen on opposing yeshiva ball clubs, is actually a gently didactic differentiation between two aspects of the Jewish faith, the Hasidic and the Orthodox, primarily the Hasidic, the little known mystics with their beards, earlocks and stringently reclusive way of life. According to Reuven’s father who is a Zionist, an activist, they are fanatics; according to Danny’s, other Jews are apostates and Zionists “goyim.” The schisms here are reflected through discussions, between fathers and sons, and through the separation imposed on the two boys for two years which still does not affect their lasting friendship or enduring hopes.
The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, May 11 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Neptune’s Brood by Charles Stross. The year is AD 7000. The human species is nearly extinct due to its fragile nature. Krina Alizond-114 is metahuman, descended from the robots that once served humanity. She’s on a journey to the water world of Shin-Tethys to find her sister Ana. But her trip is interrupted when pirates capture her ship. Their leader believes there’s more to Krina’s search than meets the eye. He’s correct: Krina and Ana each possess half of the fabled Atlantis Carnet, a financial instrument of unbelievable value. And what neither of them suspects is that a ruthless body-double assassin has stalked Krina across the galaxy, ready to take the carnet once it is whole—and leave no witnesses alive to tell the tale… The YA Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. A beautiful and distinguished family. A private island. A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy. A group of four friends—the Liars— whose friendship turns destructive. A revolution. An accident. A secret. Lies upon lies. True love. The truth. We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart. Read it. And if anyone asks you how it ends, LIE.
