Learn to Meditate at the Peoria Public Library by Suraaj Bhatia
Meditation has been practiced by people since ancient
times. Over the last 40 years, interest in meditation has grown significantly as people have realized the broad benefits it has to offer. Scientific research has proven that meditation can reduce stress, improve health, and contribute to more balanced body, mind, and spirit. Meditation is also known as concentration, inversion, contemplation, or sitting in silence. Since 1995, now in its 20th year, Science of Spirituality Peoria has offered free meetings and workshops at the Peoria Public Library related to meditation and finding deeper meaning in our lives. In August, Peoria Public Library will sponsor a public talk entitled, “Reducing Stress through Meditation.” Join William Smith, retired Army Lt. Colonel, as he discusses the extraordinary effects of meditation to reduce stress-related responses, improve concentration and enhance clarity of thought and mental equilibrium. He will also present a simple, yet powerful meditation technique that can enrich one’s life personally, professionally, and spiritually. This talk will be on Saturday, August 15, 10:30 a.m. to noon at the North Branch. Additionally, a four session Introductory Meditation class, sponsored by the Peoria Public Library, will be taught for the first time at the Lakeview Branch on Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21, & 28, 1:30-3:00 p.m. The instructors are Mary Kay & Harold Berjohn and Dr. Prem & Suraaj Bhatia. Also, twice a month, the Meditation Workshops for Spiritual Awareness are offered at the North Branch for those wanting to learn more about meditation and are interested in leading a more peaceful and fulfilling life. Workshops include meditation, readings, short videos, and discussion. The times for these workshops will be from 6:15-7:45 p.m. All of these programs are free ($5 workbook fee for the Introductory Meditation classes will be collected during the first class). Woman With a Secret is the latest psychological suspense novel by bestselling author Sophie Hannah. Nicki Clements is a wife and mother but like anyone else she has secrets and hers are only known by one other person; a person who she has never seen or even spoken to. And now she is arrested for the murder of a man that she doesn’t even know. A controversial newspaper columnist named Damon Blundy had been murdered at his residence on Elmhirst Road, and the police have set up a road block, searching for something. As Nicki Clements waits in her car, she sees a face that she has never wanted to see again and he is the cop that is checking each car. In a panic, she makes a u-turn and escapes but not without notice. Now she is under suspicion and one simple answer could clear her but if she reveals the secret from her past it could ruin her. Silver Linings by Debbie Macomber is a return to Rose Harbor Inn and follows innkeeper Jo Marie as she continues to learn to let go of the past and embrace the unexpected. The book starts with Mark Taylor her good friend (and handyman) telling her he is moving out of town but as she discovers the secret behind his decision, she welcomes two new visitors to the inn. Best friends from high school Kellie Crenshaw and Katie Gilroy have returned for their ten-year class reunion. Katie hopes for a second chance with her old boyfriend, James and Kellie (also known as Coco) wants to confront the boy who broke her heart. It is a story of discovering that people can change, letting go of the past and accepting what the future has in store. The Gift by Wanda E. Brunstetter is the story of Adam Beachy, who still struggles with the memory of his mother who walked out on his family when he was a young boy and away from the Amish faith. In this second book of The Prairie State Friends series, Beachy is content to be a bachelor, but when tragedy strikes, he finds himself, the caretaker to his three nieces and in need of a wife. Although Leah Mast seems like the logical person to fill that role, can they make a marriage of convenience work and can he overlook her gift for reflexology, which he does not believe in. There are many twists and turns throughout the book that will keep you guessing as to what will happen next. Brunstetter has a knack for writing about real life issues in the Amish genre.
With the start of school just around the corner, there is still time to get in some “hot” summer reading. Here are a few titles that will be hitting the shelves at Peoria Public Library in August:
Voices in the Ocean: A Journey into the Wild and Haunting World of Dolphins by Susan Casey came about after the author was surrounded by a pod of spinner dolphins while swimming off the coast of Maui. That experience led her to go on a two-year global venture to explore dolphins and their complex relationship to people. In this book, she looks at the career of John Lilly, a pioneer in dolphin studies, visits a community in Hawaii that believes dolphins are the key to spiritual enlightenment, and travels to Ireland where the dolphin is called “the world’s most loyal animal”. Casey also shows the dark side to humans’ relationship with dolphins, where they have become stars in a global multibilliondollar captivity industry are shipped and kept in brutal conditions. With her personal reporting, and scientific research, Casey has written a gripping book about the world of the playful, social and intelligent dolphin. The Storm of the Century: Tragedy, Heroism, Survival, and the Epic True Story of America’s Deadliest Natural disaster: The Great Gulf Hurricane of 1900 by Al Roker is a narrative history written by the NBC weather anchor of the deadliest natural disaster in America’s history. In this book, Roker follows survivors before, during and after the Sept. 8, 1900 hurricane that devastated Galveston, Texas. What makes his book different from Erik Larson’s Isaac’s Storm is that this account investigates the race relations of the time and the impact of minorities living in Galveston both during the city’s rise and in the after effects of the catastrophe. Roker provides a broad overview of the event and gives more attention to the individual experiences of people who lived through the disaster. This book will be a good place to start for readers new to the subject. Those who are looking for more scholarly treatment will want to consider Larson’s book.

The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, September 19 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss The Patriarch: the Remarkable Life and Turbulent Times of Joseph P. Kennedy by David Nasaw. In this pioneering biography, Nasaw draws on never-before-published materials from archives on three continents and interviews with Kennedy family members and friends to tell the life story of a man who participated in the major events of his times: the booms and busts, the Depression and the New Deal, two world wars and a cold war, and the birth of the New Frontier. In studying Kennedy’s life, we relive with him the history of the American Century. & non-fiction book group
The Bibliophiles Book Club will meet on Tuesday, September 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Aimless Love by Billy Collins. From the two-term Poet Laureate of the United States Billy Collins comes his first volume of new and selected poems in twelve years. Aimless Love combines fifty new poems with generous selections from his four most recent books. By turns playful, ironic, and serious, Collins’s poetry captures the nuances of everyday life while leading the reader into zones of inspired wonder. In the poet’s own words, he hopes that his poems “begin in Kansas and end in Oz.” Touching on the themes of love, loss, joy, and poetry itself, these poems showcase his best work.
Intercontinental Readers will meet Tuesday, November 17 at 1:00 p.m. to discuss The Rising of Bella Casey by Mary Morrissey. This study examines the estate of the Tobiad family at Tyros in Jordan for which we have evidence from the mid third to mid second centuries BCE. Archaeology and literary sources are used to reconstruct the history of an important Judean family, within the context of their Hellenistic era estate.

The Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Monkey’s Raincoat by Robert Criss. The case seems simple enough, but Elvis isn’t thrilled. Neither is his enigmatic partner and firepower Joe Pike. Their search down the seamy side of Hollywood’s studio lots and sculptured lawns soon leads them deep into a nasty netherworld of drugs and sex - and murder. Now the case is getting interesting, but it’s also turned ugly. Because everybody, from cops to starlets to crooks, has declared war on Ellen and Elvis.
Club Read will meet on Wednesday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. All the Light We Cannot See is a beautiful, stunningly ambitious novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Doerr’s combination of soaring imagination and meticulous observation is electric. As Europe is engulfed by war and lives collide unpredictably, ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ is a captivating and devastating elegy for innocence.
The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, September 14 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss After Oil, by John Michael Greer. Author John Michael Greer brings together twelve original tales selected from among his readers. Each story offers glimpses into possible futures where oil scarcity and lower energy availability spell the end of modern industrial society.
The YA Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Black Dove, White Raven by Elizabeth Wein. Milia and Teo’s lives changed in a fiery, terrifying instant when a bird strike brought down the plane their stunt pilot mothers were flying. Teo’s mother died immediately, but Em’s survived, determined to raise Teo according to his late mother’s wishes-in a place where he won’t be discriminated against because of the color of his skin. But in 1930s America, a white woman raising a black adoptive son alongside a white daughter is too often seen as a threat.
The Read On Book Club will meet on Tuesday, September 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Branch to discuss Bishop 2 by RM Johnson. This explosive saga continues with the three men charging Bishop Larry Lakes with sexual molestation. They plan to take him to court and make public his crimes against them, and sue Larry for all that he has. In Bishop 2, Larry doesn’t take kindly to being threatened. He keeps secret from his wife and plots to take down his accusers before they destroy him. Will the Bishop get away with his crimes?
If You Like the Video Game ‘Dishonored’ by Amanda Hildebrand Dishonored is a first person action stealth hybrid that takes place in a dark steampunk world ravaged by plague. You play as Corvo, a former royal bodyguard framed for the murder of the empress and kidnapping of her daughter. The game follows Corvo as he gets revenge on those who wronged him and tries to put the empress’ daughter back on the throne. The book The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch shows us a similar feeling world, this one a dark fantastical take on Venice, and also features a bloody coup with a criminal poised as the only one able to stop it. Boneshaker, a book by Cherie Priest, shows us a steampunk take on the Pacific Northwest. The first run of the Boneshaker drill, a device designed to drill though Alaskan ice, ends in disaster. Sixteen years later the inventor’s son attempts to restore his father’s reputation by finding out the truth of what happened. Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks shows us a dark world and a young boy training to be an assassin with the aid of supernatural abilities. Once again, a political coup plays an important role as well, and several of the other characters are reminiscent of side characters in Dishonored as well. In Broken Blade by Kelly McCullough, a group of religious assassins is disbanded and a former member is living an aimless life with a price on his head until a delivery job comes his way that could allow him to redeem himself.
