British author Jo Baker has perfectly imagined the below stairs world of Jane Austen’s famous Pride and Prejudice in her book Longbourn. The award-winning author will be at Peoria Public Library Main Library on Monday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m. to give fans an inside look at her work. The event is free, but a reservation is requested. To make reservations for yourself or a group please call (309) 497-2150 or email programmingdept@ppl.peoria.lib.il.us. In Longbourn, the servants take center stage as this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice unrolls. Rather than being a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, it is a story told around the beloved 200-year-old Austen work. While Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters fuss over balls and husbands, Sarah, their orphaned housemaid, is beginning to chafe against the boundaries of her class. When a new footman arrives at Longbourn under mysterious circumstances, the carefully choreographed world she has known all her life threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended. Mentioned only fleetingly in Jane Austen’s classic, here Jo Baker dares to take us beyond the drawing rooms of Regency England and, in doing so, uncovers the real world of the novel that has captivated readers’ hearts around the world for generations. Longbourn has been named A New York Times Book Review Notable Book, a Seattle Times Best Title, a Christian Science Monitor Best Fiction Book, a Miami Herald Favorite Book, and a Kirkus Best Book of the Year. The film version is in pre-production. Jo Baker was born in Lancashire, England, and educated at Oxford University and Queen’s University Belfast. She is the author of the novels The Undertow, Offcomer, The Mermaid’s Child, and The Telling. She lives in Lancaster, England. Books will be available for purchase at the event and there will be an opportunity to have your book signed by Jo Baker. Please call (309) 497-2150 to reserve a ticket.

On May 21, The Friends of Peoria Public Library received the Pat Landen award for the publicity campaign created for their “Friend-raiser” event The World of Downton Abbey with Jessica Fellowes held in September 2013. The Central Illinois Public Relations Association Awards are given annually to organizations that have successfully addressed a contemporary issue with exemplary professional skill, creativity and resourcefulness. PRA Awards acknowledge the very highest level of achievement in Public Relations in Greater Peoria and are the established icon of the “best of the best” public relations practices. The Pat Landen Award highlights an external campaign, and is usually something on a large scale. The highly successful “World of Downton Abbey” event brought best-selling author, Jessica Fellowes, to Peoria for a “Friend-raiser” that was designed to call attention to the work of, and increase membership in, the Friends of Peoria Public Library. The event was filled to capacity, with 213 people in attendance after a publicity campaign that launched in June 2013 and continued through the date of the event on September 28, 2013. The campaign brought 134 new memberships, 17 renewals and 44 leads who received renewal letters. In addition, thousands of people saw messages that exposed them to the Friends of Peoria Public Library. The Friends of Peoria Public Library collaborated with the Peoria Public Library Board Community Relations Committee and Public Relations Department to create the event.
Classical Music Lovers Show Diversifying Tastes
Professional Juggler Jason Kollum to Perform at Peoria Public Library
By Teri Miller, Manager of Outreach Services
When you or someone you know has problems getting to the
By Jill Harter
As the weather warms up, library patrons continue to enjoy past classical favorites like the Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig Van Beethoven, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. While these favorites overshadow the numbers of other composer checkouts, there has been a fresh mix of musical creators and composers that seem to have increased considerably in recent weeks. New on the trending music list are Camille Saint-Saens with his Carnival of the Animals, Cello Concertos by Antonin Dvorak, and Richard Wagner with his innovative Tristan and Isolde. Other favorites that have been high on the trending list before include Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and his Swan Lake masterpiece, Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, which he described as encompassing the “mystery and great surge of the creative power of Spring.” As the variety of the classical music checkouts increase in popularity and diversify even further, there are clear signs that Peoria Public Library patrons want a greater selection of classical music. To see what selections are offered or to weigh in on what classical music you would like to see at Peoria Public Library, visit our online catalog or any of our five branches to experience our classical musical collection.
Professional Juggler Jason Kollum travels all over the Midwest, specializing in balloon-twisting and stilt-walking performances for children and families. Jason will host two free shows at both Peoria Public Library North Branch and Peoria Public Library Lincoln Branch on Monday, July 14. Jason will be performing at North Branch at 11:00 a.m. and then at Lincoln Branch at 2:30 p.m. The program will last approximately one hour. The family-friendly program, “See a Juggler, Be a Juggler” is free and geared towards kids of all ages. The show is 100 percent total-participation, and interactive with every family member that attends. Jason will wow the audience by not just juggling balls, but clubs, rings, spinning balls, giant beanbag chairs, and much more. At the end of the show Jason lets the kids join in and practice some of their juggling skills. The program encourages kids to use their imagination and practice team building skills with one another. Juggling is not just a hobby or entertainment, but has been known to improve hand-eye coordination, and develop concentration as well. What better way to learn, be entertained and have family fun!
