that polka music is the happiest form of music on the face of the earth! Join the Pint Size Polkas

for such tunes like Tick Tock Polka, Fire House Polka, and Rolling Down the Road. Then join Barry Cloyd for “An Irish Immigrant’s Song: The Celtic Influx” on Wednesday, July 22 at 2:00 p.m. at North Branch.

In this program, co-sponsored by The Peoria County Genealogical Society, Barry gives you the history and the heart of the people who came to America from the Celtic Isles in story and song. In the mid 1800’s, at the time of the “Great Hunger”, sometimes known as the Irish Potato Famine, the Mid-West was the western frontier of America. Through ancient myth and song as well as some original pieces, Cloyd presents the history and heart of the Celtic people who came to the Mid-West in search of liberty and opportunity.

If You Like the Game Silent Hill... by Amanda Hildebrand The Silent Hill series features characters becoming trapped in the town and terrorized by monsters and various horrors typically drawn from their own guilt or dark past. The games also usually include notes or diaries that you can find that reveal more of the story and the horror of the town. The best parts of the Silent Hill games featured an oppressive atmosphere of coming dread and subtle, not quite right, horror, though there is a good amount of more traditional horror as well. House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski features a haunted house that is bigger on the inside than the outside, and it’s growing. What really makes this book stand out is the way it is formatted and told. Layers of narrators and ‘found’ notes, lists, and other sources are combined with different colored text and very bizarre arrangement of the words on the page. In a similar vein, but not near as adventurous, is The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer by Stephen King. This book is a companion piece to the movie Rose Red detailing the early life of the haunted house from that movie, yet another house that is growing larger on its own. The story reads as an account of the finding of the eponymous diary but is more of a standard structure than House of Leaves. If you’re a fan of short stories, Teatro Grottesco by Thomas Ligotti is worth checking out. The stories have much of the same atmosphere as the best parts of the Silent Hill games, that of an oppressive, creeping dread rather than in-yourface horror and violence. Ligotti also had a tendency to make use of small towns that seem to be located in a nightmarish rendition of the real world.

HOT HOT New NewTitles Titles

July by Robin Helenthal

July offers many new and exciting titles waiting to be read before summer ends. Many of our favorite characters are back with new and thrilling stories that you won’t want to miss. Put them on hold so you won’t miss a single story.

Code of Conduct by Brad Thor is a high-action military thriller and is the fourteenth title in his Scott Harvath series. Concealed deep within one of the world’s most powerful organizations is a secret committee with a devastating itinerary. Its members are given the highest possible protections and are considered the elites and above scrutiny. When four brief seconds of video, taken half a world away, are anonymously transmitted to D.C., undercover wheels are set in motion and Scott Harvath is given one of the most perilous and challenging counterterrorism assignments of his career. This action packed read spans the globe with international intrigue, political gamesmanship, and some of the darkest secrets in the intelligence world. Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee was written before To Kill a Mockingbird and was the first novel that Lee submitted to her publishers. The manuscript, assumed lost, was discovered in late 2014. The story begins when Jean Louise Finch returns home to Maycomb to visit her father. She has to deal with issues both personal and political that involve Atticus, society and the small Alabama town that shaped her. This book explores how many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird adjust to the unsettled times in mid-50’s America. After the Storm by Linda Castillo is part of the Kate Burkholder series in which she must uncover a family’s long-hidden past to solve a brutal murder. After a tornado hits Painters Mill and unearths some human remains, Burkholder identifies the bones and then has to notify the family. The evidence shows that the death was no accident and she finds herself dealing with a 30-year-old case that takes her back into the Amish community to which she used to belong. Between a faltering relationship and an unknown aggressor, Burkholder finds with this case that people will go to any lengths to protect their own.

The Novel Habits of Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith finds Isabel Dalhousie embarking on another investigation. This time she is asked to help a family learn why their young son has been having vivid memories of a past life and is able to give perfect descriptions of places that he could not possibly know about. When they find the house where the boy claims to have lived, they learn the tragic story of the family who lived there and Dalhousie faces a situation which will take all her skills as a sleuth and philosopher. Meanwhile at home in Edinburgh, will she lose her housekeeper and companion to an elderly suitor? If I Could Turn Back Time by Beth Harbison gives us the chance to look at what might happen to someone who gets to live the fantasy of going back in time. Ramie Phillips is thirty-seven and from all appearances has led a very successful life but she is not happy. While boating and partying with friends off the coast of Florida, she dives off the diving board and finds herself back in time on the eve of her 18th birthday with the chance to see people she has lost and change the choices she regrets. Some of the questions she asks herself are: How did she get back here? Has she gone off the deep end? Is she really back in time? Above all, she’ll have to answer the question that no one else can: What it is that she really wants from the past, and for her future?

August Book Clubs

Join a book club at Peoria Public Library this month. New members are always welcome!

At Peoria Public Library

The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, August 9 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss German Boy: a Child in War by Samuel Wolfgang. Samuel was 10 years old when he, his mother, and younger sister fled the advancing Russian army in Germany in the final days of World War II. Describing the events many years later, Samuel still vividly remembers the disorientation, terror, hunger, and desperation that dogged their lives until 1951 when they arrived in the United States. There is a thread of hope, an appreciation for random kindness, and an ability to look beyond the depravity of humankind that pervades this brave and poignant memoir of a man who went on to serve 30 years in the U.S. Air Force and retired as & a colonel. non-fiction book group

The Bibliophiles Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation by Michael Pollan. In Cooked, Michael Pollan discovers the enduring power of the four classical elements - fire, water, air, and earth - to transform the stuff of nature into delicious things to eat and drink. Apprenticing himself to a succession of culinary masters, Pollan learns how to grill with fire, cook with liquid, bake bread, and ferment everything from cheese to beer - and finds that reclaiming cooking as an act of enjoyment and self-reliance opens the door to a more nourishing life.

The Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, August 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss the New York Times best seller Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. New Bremen, Minnesota, 1961. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new, young president. But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. Accident. Nature. Suicide. Murder. Frank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets, lies, adultery, and betrayal, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years. Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God.

Intercontinental Readers will meet Tuesday, August 18 at 1:00 p.m. to discuss Someone by Alice McDermott. An ordinary life - its sharp pains and unexpected joys, its bursts of clarity and moments of confusion - lived by an ordinary woman: this is the subject of Someone. Scattered recollections of childhood, adolescence, motherhood, and old age come together in this transformative narrative. The magic of McDermott’s novel lies in how it reveals us all as fools for this or that, in one way or another. We will also discuss It Didn’t Play in Peoria by Greg Wahl and Charles Bobbit. “Will it play in Peoria?” was an old Vaudeville phrase meaning, “Will it appeal to the average person?” The Illinois city has gained fame through the years, but more often as the butt of jokes or as an example of the typical Middle American town than through any recognition of its many accomplishments. But it had greatness in its grasp, and more than once.

Club Read will meet on Wednesday, August 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain. At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society. In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. Passionately argued, superbly researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

The Read On Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Branch to discuss Stand Your Ground by Victoria Christopher Murray. Janice Johnson is living every mother’s worst nightmare, her sixteen year old son was murdered and the shooter hasn’t been arrested. Janice and her husband want justice for their son, but disagree about whether to trust the police investigation or take matters into their own hands. Call 497-2601 for more information.

The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, August 10 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. A god has died, and it’s up to Tara to bring him back to life before his city falls apart. Her client is Kos, recently deceased fire god of the city of Alt Coulumb. Tara’s job: resurrect Kos before chaos sets in. Her only help: Abelard, a chain-smoking priest of the dead god, who’s having an understandable crisis of faith. When Tara and Abelard discover that Kos was murdered, they have to make a case in Alt Coulumb’s courts— and their quest for the truth endangers their partnership, their lives, and Alt Coulumb’s slim hope of survival. Set in a phenomenally built world in which justice is a collective force bestowed on a few, craftsmen fly on lightning bolts, and gargoyles can rule cities, Three Parts Dead introduces readers to an ethical landscape in which the line between right and wrong blurs.

Imagine Dragons Takes New Approach by Sarah Farrell Imagine Dragons’ sophomore album, Smoke + Mirrors (Interscope) takes a new approach to the band’s pop rock style, taking an 80’s inspired route, reminiscent of Depeche Mode’s 1987 Music For the Masses album. Smoke + Mirrors’ first single, “Shots” debuted at #75 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and peaked at #7 on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs. The single utilizes synthesizers and complex guitar

The YA Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, August 18 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Written in the Stars by Aisha Saeed. Naila’s conservative immigrant parents have always said the same thing: She may choose what to study, how to wear her hair, and what to be when she grows up—but they will choose her husband. Following their cultural tradition, they will plan an arranged marriage for her. And until then, dating—even friendship with a boy—is forbidden. When Naila breaks their rule by falling in love with Saif, her parents are livid. Convinced she has forgotten who she truly is, they travel to Pakistan to visit relatives and explore their roots. But Naila’s vacation turns into a nightmare when she learns that plans have changed—her parents have found her a husband and they want her to marry him, now! Her only hope of escape is Saif . . . if he can find her before it’s too late.

riffs layered beneath lead singer Dan Reynolds’ airy vocals, leaving the listener with the song’s chorus ringing pleasantly in their ears. The album’s second single, “I Bet My Life” peaked at #28 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #3 on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs. The single has been featured in a number of commercials, recognizable by its stomping chorus and upbeat folk rock sound. Overall, the entire album provides a variety of style, ranging from slow paced and peaceful (the album’s title track, “Smoke + Mirrors) to synthesized ballad (“Friction”). More artists like Imagine Dragons are Coldplay and Arcade Fire. Listen to all these groups free with Freegal streaming music at www.peoriapubliclibrary or get the app and use your library card.
