HOT HOT New NewTitles Titles
June
Summer Readers will find a number of new titles coming out in June that are just right for an evening of reading, an afternoon at the pool or enjoying on vacation.
by Robin Helenthal
Eight Hundred Grapes: A Novel by Laura Dave is the story of learning to deal with the imperfections of life, listening to your heart and the importance of having a place you can truly call home. While growing up in the heart of the Sonoma vineyards, Georgia Ford has learned a number of important secrets: how many grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine (800), the secret to her mother’s lasagna (chocolate) and the best way to end a fight (hold hands). What no one told her was how to deal with finding out a week before her wedding that her fiancé had been keeping a secret that will change their lives forever. When she goes home hoping for comfort, she finds that her fiancé is not the only one keeping secrets… The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George has been described as “a love letter to books, meant for anyone who believes in the power of stories to shape people’s lives”. It is the story of Jean Perdu, a Parisian who knows how to put exactly the right book in the hands of a reader, the one that will speak to that individual and eases the suffering in their soul. But Perdu, the owner of the floating bookstore, “Literary Apothecary” cannot heal his own torment and so one summer he un-moors his little bookshop from the shore and begins a journey of memories. Through his travels, he awakens the passions he has forgotten and through food, dancing, thinking and looking he finds what he has been missing. The President’s Shadow by Brad Meltzer is part of The Culper Ring Series. Beecher White has a job with the National Archives in Washington, D.C. He is responsible for keeping the government’s most important documents and its most closely held secrets safe. White also has another role as a member of the Culper Ring, a 200-year-old society founded by George Washington and charged with protecting the Presidency. After the discovery of a buried arm in the White House Rose Garden and a message concealed in the fist that is clearly intended for him, White must investigate his family history, solve the puzzle and find the hidden truth that leads to one of our country’s greatest secrets with terrible consequences for the president and repercussions for the whole nation.
Finders Keepers by Stephen King is the second book in a trilogy and stars Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney and Jerome Robinson, characters that King introduced in Mr. Mercedes. It is the riveting novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes too far and the power of storytelling. It is also King writing about how literature shapes a life – for good, for bad, forever. It is the story about a treasure in the form of notebooks of a writer’s last works, what happens when they fall into innocent hands and how far a vengeful reader will go. Wicked Charms by Janet Evanovich & Phoef Sutton is the next in the Lizzy and Diesel series. This time, the duo is trying to find the Stone of Avarice which was buried along with other pirate treasure by the disreputable bootlegger Collier “Peg Leg” Dazzle somewhere along the coast of New England. They are not alone looking for the stone, there are others, some who are willing to commit murder or make a deal with the devil just to hold the fortune in their hands. Diesel’s cousin Wulf is one of those on the hunt but he is just as interested in Lizzy as he is the treasure. The story is an escapade full of raiders, monkeys, minions and mayhem. Ever After by Jude Deveraux is the final book in the Nantucket Bride trilogy, in which physical therapist Hallie Hartley inherits a house in Nantucket. When she decides to to check out the house, she finds she has a patient already settled in. Jamie Taggert, who is part of the Montgomery-Taggert family, is supposed to be recovering from a ski injury and needs serious attention. As the days go by, Shelly realizes that Jamie has a secret and is tormented by nightmares which leads her to suspect that there is more to his injury than he is letting on. Add in a pair of matchmaking ghosts and Jamie’s relatives descending upon Nantucket for a wedding and watch the magic of true love unfold.

The Bibliophiles Book Club will meet on Tuesday, July 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Roosevelt Women: A Portrait in Five Generations by Betty Caroli. The Roosevelt name conjures up images of powerful Presidents and dashing men of high society. But few people know much about the extraordinary network of women that held the Roosevelt clan together through war, scandal, and disease. In The Roosevelt Women, Betty Boyd Caroli weaves together stories culled from a rich store of letters, memoirs, and interviews to chronicle nine extraordinary Roosevelt women across a century and a half of turbulent history. She examines the Roosevelt women as mothers, daughters, wives, and, beyond that, as world travelers, authors, campaigners, and socialites—in short, as themselves. She reveals how they demonstrated the energy and intellectual curiosity that defined their famous family, as well as the roles they played in the intrigues, scandals, and accomplishments that were hallmarks of the Roosevelt clan. From the much maligned Sara Delano (who sired Franklin and by turns terrified and supported Eleanor) to Theodore’s irrepressible daughter, Alice (”I can either rule the country or control Alice,” Teddy once said) to the beloved Bamie, who was the only mother Alice ever knew, and the model of everything she never was in life, to the exceptionally beautiful but ultimately overwhelmed Mittie, Theodore’s mother, The Roosevelt Women is an intricate portrait of bold and talented women, a grand tale of both unbearable tragedies and triumphant achievements.

The Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, July 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Killshot by Elmore Leonard. Armand Degas is a Mafia hit man the guys call Blackbird. He is cool and composed and knows a good score. So when punk crook Richie Nix tells him about his surefire scheme to extort $10,000 from a middle-of-nowhere Michigan real estate agent, Armand signs on. What the two thugs don’t count on is Carmen Colson and her ironworker husband, Wayne, being in the real estate office when they go in to collect. Now Carmen and Wayne know too much and Armand has no intention of letting them survive to tell about it. But Wayne’s sure the local cops are going to fumble the manhunt, and the best the feds can offer is the Witness Security Program. Now it’s come down to one man, one woman, and two killers ... and someone’s bound to end up on the wrong end of the gun.
Club Read will meet on Wednesday, July 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss My Antonia by Willa Cather. My Ántonia evokes the Nebraska prairie life of Willa Cather’s childhood, and commemorates the spirit and courage of immigrant pioneers in America. One of Cather’s earliest novels, written in 1918, it is the story of Ántonia Shimerda, who arrives on the Nebraska frontier as part of a family of Bohemian emigrants. Her story is told through the eyes of Jim Burden, a neighbor who will befriend Ántonia, teach her English, and follow the remarkable story of her life. Working in the fields of waving grass and tall corn that dot the Great Plains, Ántonia forges the durable spirit that will carry her through the challenges she faces when she moves to the city. But only when she returns to the prairie does she recover her strength and regain a sense of purpose in life. In the quiet, probing depth of Willa Cather’s art, Ántonia’s story becomes a moving elegy to those whose persistence and strength helped build the American frontier.
The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, July 13 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide, the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition. The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one anotioner, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.
The YA Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. Jude and her twin brother, Noah, are incredibly close. At thirteen, isolated Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude cliff-dives and wears red-red lipstick and does the talking for both of them. But three years later, Jude and Noah are barely speaking. Something has happened to wreck the twins in different and dramatic ways . . . until Jude meets a cocky, broken, beautiful boy, as well as someone else—an even more unpredictable new force in her life. The early years are Noah’s story to tell. The later years are Jude’s. What the twins don’t realize is that they each have only half the story, and if they could just find their way back to one another, they’d have a chance to remake their world.
