Music in the McKenzie presents Small Potatoes on Sunday, May 18 at Peoria Public Library North Branch
Peoria Public Library North Branch presents Music in the McKenzie: Small Potatoes at North Branch Sunday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. for a repertoire of music described as “Celtic to Cowboy.” Small Potatoes, a Chicago based folk duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso, has been touring together since 1993. In that time they’ve become sought-after regulars at many clubs and coffeehouses across the U.S. They say it has taken “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Superb musicianship and showmanship, award-winning songwriting, and a strong sense of tradition has made them, as Dirty Linen Magazine once said, “one of the most polished, inventive, and entertaining shows on the circuit.” For more on the history of Small Potatoes visit their website at smallpotatoesmusic.com. Proceeds from CD sales will benefit Friends of the Peoria Public Library. The show is free and open to all ages.

house keeper on Janus Rock, a tiny island a half day’s boat journey from the coast of Western Australia. When a baby washes up in a rowboat, he and his young wife Isabel decide to raise the child as their own. The baby seems like a gift from God, and the couple’s reasoning for keeping her seduces the reader into entering the waters of treacherous morality even as Tom - whose moral code withstood the horrors of World War I - begins to waver. YA for Adults Book Club will meet on the third Tuesday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black. Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.
Ever Heard of a “Read-Alike?” Just finished a great read and want something similar? Or perhaps you’re on a long holds list and want to read something now? Here are some recommended readalikes based off some of the currently popular items at Peoria Public Library: If you like Gone Girl: The Breaker by Minette Walters: A three-year-old girl is found wandering the streets and hours later, her mother’s body is washed up on the beach. The prime suspects are her husband and a young actor. Why you might like it: Both novels are character-driven and intricately-plotted psychological suspense stories featuring husbands who appear devoted, yet become prime suspects in their wives’ disappearance. As the investigation continues secrets are uncovered, presenting the couples’ relationships in a new and disturbing light. The Breaker is more leisurely-paced than Gone Girl.
