E-book Improvements Both the Peoria Public Library e-book collections, ADML and E-Read Illinois have increased the check out limits from three to five. In other good news, both ADML/Overdrive and E-Read Illinois/Asis 360 have released new apps, making the process of finding and downloading e-books even easier. These apps are available for download from App Store or the Play Store. The new Overdrive app is available for Android, iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch and Windows and the name has been shortened to “OverDrive” from “OverDrive Media Console.” In addition to increased checkouts and the ability to return e-books early, the change elimates the extra step of establishing an Adobe I.D. First time users will be asked to create an OverDrive account, but there is no change for existing users who already have an Adobe ID or OverDrive account associated with their app. It also allows you to sync reading progress across devices and saves your searches. The new “Axis 360” app serves as an enhanced, easy-to-use catalog and search tool. You still need the Axis Reader app or Blio to download and read the books. More enhancements are promised by Axis 360. Find free e-books and audio books at www.peoriapubliclibrary. org under the e-books tab.
Back to Books Grant Adds Spanish-Language Selection Peoria Public Library has added 200 Spanish-language books to the collection at Lincoln Branch through a $3,000 grant. Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).” Titles purchased were divided between various age groups. One-third are books for children, one-third for teens and the remainder are books for adults. Both fiction and nonfiction are included for each age level. The books can be checked out at Lincoln Branch or reserved and sent to any Peoria Public Library location. Titles include: Cross by James Patterson The Associate by John Grisham Under the Dome by Stephen King Change Your Words, Change Your Life by Joyce Meyer Rich Dad, Poor Dad for Teens by Robert Kiyosaki Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney Divergent by Veronica Roth Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Thinking in English by Jaime Bores Steck-Vaughn Preparation for the GED 2014 Lincoln Branch has also been offering an ESL class for about a year. The popular English as a second language course for Latino-Americans meets every Monday and Thursday and focuses on pronunciation and other skills that will help them become more comfortable and confident with the English language. This Month in Peoria History by Ellie Nielsen 10-11-1868: The first through train from the Mississippi River to Chicago was run on the TP&W. 10-6-1899: Thousands of Peorians welcomed President McKinley and his cabinet on this day when he dedicated the Soldiers and Sailors monument. 10-9-1899: The first Corn Carnival in Peoria opened on this day. 10-10-1906: The first automobile taxicab in Peoria was in service. 10-10-1909: The new Lincoln Branch Library opened in the new Manual High School. 10-28-1911: The Ingersoll Monument in Glen Oak Park was unveiled. 10-20-1913: Over 5000 people witnessed the opening of the Hippodrome Theater. 10-21-1933: The cornerstone of the Hiram Walker distillery was laid on this day with a large ceremony. A copy of the 18th amendment was placed in the cornerstone. 10-2-1946: The street cars made their last runs, as Peoria transitioned to offering buses for public transportation. On October 6, 1899, “the greatest day” according to the Peoria Journal, President McKinley and his cabinet were in Peoria to dedicate the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The sculptor who was commissioned to create this monument was Fritz B. Triebel, a native Peorian, who at the time resided in Rome, Italy. It took Triebel over six years to complete the project. Some of the original monument pieces sank in a ship in transit from Deer Island, Maine, thus delaying a July 4th dedication. Eventually, new pieces arrived in a second ship for it to be dedicated on “the greatest day.” The entire city of Peoria collaborated in preparing for this momentous occasion. Approximately 70,000 people attended the event, including the sculptor and his family who came from Rome to witness the unveiling. While in Peoria, President McKinley was a guest at the home of Joseph Greenhut, a prominent Peoria businessman and an old Army friend of McKinley’s. All in all, the monument cost the city of Peoria $40,000 and was dedicated in tribute to Peoria County soldiers who sacrificed their lives in battle.

Young Adult Nonfiction Moves at Main Library During master planning for the remodeled Main Library, the Young Adult collection of fiction, nonfiction and graphic novels were assigned a location just outside the Children’s Room on the Main Floor. As time goes on, it often becomes clear that there may be a better way to do things. After several years, and a constant stream of visitors puzzled because they could not find a book on the second floor with the rest of the nonfiction, the Young Adult nonfiction is now interfiled with the rest of the nonfiction materials on the second floor. All nonfiction suitable for high school age and up should now be much simpler to find. Manager of Reference, Jennifer Sevier, said that the move follows the Fourth Law of Librarianship by Ranganthan: Save the time of the reader. Staff is always available to help library visitors find the book or other material they are searching for. If you can’t find an item listed in the catalog, be sure to ask at the Information Desk.

Liked That Book? Try This One! By Liesl Prentice Halloween Edition: Some old and new classic horror novels
If You Like The Haunting of Hill House, try:
This House is Haunted by John Boyne: In Norfolk, England, in 1867, governess Eliza Gaine must confront an evil presence that lives within the house where she is employed. Why you might like it: A psychically sensitive young woman is disturbed by her time in an 80-year-old mansion allegedly haunted by those violently murdered there; This House recounts a young woman’s similar struggle to survive a house’s malevolent spirits in the 19th century. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski: A family relocates to a small house on Ash Tree Lane and discovers that the inside of their new home seems to be without boundaries. Why you might like it: Danielewski’s novel is complex and intricate, featuring narratives within narratives, footnotes and puzzles, but similar to Jackson’s book, it contains vivid details concerning the frightening architecture of the central house and the psychological effects of the uncanny space. The Turn of the Screw by Henry James: The story unfolds with the arrival of a new governess at a remote country estate, who has been hired by the uncle of two young orphans to take complete charge of the children’s lives and upbringing. Her first peaceful weeks are disturbed by the apparition of the ghosts of two evil servants who served in the house. Why you might like it: These elegantly written, atmospheric horror stories feature ambiguous and unreliable narration, intimate psychological detail, and a fine balance between supernatural terror and psychological delusion. November Book Clubs at Peoria Public Library Join a book club at Peoria Public Library this month. New members are always welcome! Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Black Box by Michel Connolly. In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch’s ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the ‘black box,’ the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together. The Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club meets on Monday, November 10, 2014 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. The world is ending not with a bang so much as a long, drawn-out whimper. And it turns out the whimper can be a lot harder to cope with. The Earth’s rotation slows, gradually stretching out days and nights and subtly affecting the planet’s gravity. The looming apocalypse parallels the adolescent struggles of 10-year-old Julia, as her comfortable suburban life succumbs to a sort of domestic deterioration. Julia confronts her parents’ faltering marriage, illness, the death of a loved one, her first love, and her first heartbreak. Karen Thompson Walker is a gifted storyteller. Her language is precise and poetic, but style never overpowers the realism she imbues to her characters and the slowing Earth they inhabit. Most impressively, she has written a coming-ofage tale that asks whether it’s worth coming of age at all in a world that might end at any minute. Like the best stories about the end of the world, The Age of Miracles is about the existence of hope and whether it can prevail in the face of uncertainty.
The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss Bolivar: American Liberator by Marie Arana. Drawing on a wealth of primary documents, novelist and journalist Marie Arana brilliantly captures early nineteenth-century South America and the explosive tensions that helped revolutionize Bolívar. In 1813 he launched a campaign for the independence of Colombia and Venezuela, commencing a dazzling career that would take him across the rugged terrain of South America, from Amazon jungles to the Andes mountains. From his battlefield victories to his ill-fated marriage and legendary love affairs, Bolívar emerges as a man of many facets: fearless general, brilliant strategist, consummate diplomat, passionate abolitionist, gifted writer, and flawed politician. For more information call 309-497-2186. Bibliophiles will meet on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity by Kathryn Boo. In this non-fiction account, one journalist expands upon global change and inequality by looking at a makeshift settlement called the Annawadi hidden deep within Mumbai. Calling this book a page turner is an understatement as Boo watches fear and tragedy strike the city. It is then that the true willpower of the Annawadi people starts to reveal itself. These characters will not be forgotten for a long time. For more information, call Carol May at (309) 692-1020 or email cmay1223@ comcast.net. Club Read is on vacation and will resume in January. The Read On Book Club is on winter break and will resume in January. Intercontinental Readers will meet on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 discuss The Umbrella Tree by Mary Stanley. In a novel that spans two continents, The Umbrella Tree is a compelling and moving story, which is full of surprises. There are secrets,
lies, deception, love, humour and loyalty: the best and worst of human nature. Mary Stanley’s sixth novel is a beautifully written, evocative and wise story that will stay with you long after you’ve read the final page Call 309-497-2143 for more information. YA for Adults Book Club will meet on the third Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Freakboy by Kristin Elizabeth Clark. From the outside, Brendan Chase seems to have it pretty easy. He’s a star wrestler, a video game aficionado, and a loving boyfriend to his seemingly perfect match, Vanessa. But on the inside, Brendan struggles to understand why his body feels so wrong—why he sometimes fantasizes having long hair, soft skin, and gentle curves. Is there even a name for guys like him? Guys who sometimes want to be girls? Or is Brendan just a freak?
