Technology Upgrade to Increase Library Internet Speed 10 Times Peoria Public Library is finishing a technology upgrade that should increase internet speeds at all locations by approximately ten times. Library administration has been working to upgrade the internet and speeds at the various Peoria Public Library locations that were hampering the public’s ability to make good use of public computers and the many offered features. The long-awaited upgrade is at last finished and patrons should see vast improvements. The project began in May 2015 with the replacing of the old copper-based T-1 lines with new AT&T fiber optic connections. That portion of the project included trenching and construction and was completed in late July. Previously that infra-

structure was only in place at Main Library. The capacity of the project is moving the library to a shared total of 250 megabits (MB) from about 50 MB of unshared data or an increase of ten times more speed. Previously each location had its own “pipeline” consisting of either a T-1 line or cable modem. If a branch was closed, its internet connection sat idle. During the upgrade all internet connections were moved to one central “pipe” and a new service provider was contracted. That means that when a branch is closed, its internet capacity is being passed on to the other locations. In addition there is far less equipment to manage and fewer pieces of equipment that can break now that there is one central control center.

Autumn on the Prairie;

works by the Prairie Fiber Guild at the Peoria Public Library Main Library Gallery Members of the Prairie Fiber Arts Guild are exhibiting a collection of their works in the Main Library Gallery in October. The Guild promotes fiber arts of all mediums. Expect to see a variety of items – from vests to hats, dresses and tunics, wall-hangings, quilts, bracelets and sculptured containers. They are sewn, woven, quilted, knit, felted, hooked – using natural or synthetic fibers in autumn colors. The surface is often embellished with dyes, paints, or by attaching beads, buttons, or jewelry. Each work starts with a concept, a reason for being. The theme for this exhibit is “Autumn on the Prairie.” With her woven and knit garments, Janis Straesser is trying to answer the question: “Who is the modern prairie woman?” She explains that a few years ago the cover of Vogue magazine showed “Prairie Style” garments. “I was appalled,” she said. “they showed tiered broomstick skirts, gingham shirts, laced granny shoes. No one dresses that way in Peoria – and Peoria is authentically prairie.” She decided to develop a collection of garments that expressed who a prairie woman is today. One of the works she will display is a tunic in browns, camel and white made with handspun fiber from llamas and wool from Shepherdswood Farm in Chillicothe. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs through October 30 and is open during regular library hours Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, October 2 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and the public is Handknit scarf and shawl by Abi Hutchinson, ringspun yarn by Abi Hutchinson invited to attend and meet the artists. Peoria Public Library Participates in Central Illinois Reads Peoria Public Library has joined with nine other local libraries to get Central Illinois reading by giving away advanced reader copies (ARCs) of books and by hosting a book discussion during the first Central Illinois Reads program which runs from September 21 to October 18, 2015. The libraries have partnered with Penguin Random House to secure Advanced Reading Copies of author David Mitchell’s newest book, Slade House. Mitchell’s book is set to be released October 27, 2015. Peoria Public Library will hold a book discussion on October 12 at Calvary Baptist Bible Church, 2200 W Nebraska Avenue at 6:30 p.m. as part of the Sci Fi/Fantasy Book Club. Author David Mitchell is the New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Clocks and Cloud Atlas. His new book, Slade House, could be the perfect read for the fall haunting season. It is described as “Spanning five decades, from the last days of the 1970s to the present, leaping genres, and barreling toward an astonishing conclusion, this intricately woven novel will pull you into a reality-warping new vision of the haunted house story—as only David Mitchell could imagine it”. Anyone interested in joining the Central Illinois Reads program should contact their local library for details or check out the wiki page http://cireads. pbworks.com/ for general information. HOT HOT New NewTitles Titles

October by Robin Helenthal

Killing Titan by Greg Bear is the second book in the science fiction War Dogs trilogy. The Skyrines, Master Sergeant Michael Venn and his team of soldiers, have been sent back to Mars after an imposed isolation on Earth which was a result of their last mission. This time they are continuing their investigation of the Drifters, which are ancient artifacts that have reawakened on the red planet. As part of the continuing war that began on the team’s last tour of Mars, they will be making the journey to Saturn’s moon Titan. Here they will learn new information about the Drifters and also about the plans of the Gurus who have become Earth’s advisors and provide technology and scientific insights far beyond what man has ever been capable of. The Gurus are leading the fight against outside enemies that want to invade the Earth and control of the Drifters. It is a new planet, a new battle but the same war. Dashing Through the Snow by Debbie Macomber is her newest Christmas novel. Ashley Davison, a graduate student in California and Dashiell Sutherland, a former army intelligence officer both have their reasons for wanting to get to Seattle before Christmas but both are unable to book a last-minute flight out of San Francisco and with only one rental car available, they reluctantly decide to share the car. Through a number of misadventures, including rescuing a lost puppy, a run in with petty thieves and a case of mistaken identity, they might not reach Seattle in time for Christmas but the season is still full of surprises and romance. See Me by Nicholas Sparks is the story of second chances and love in crisis. Colin Hancock has a history of bad decisions and violence and is determined to get his life on track, stay out of prison and apply himself to getting his teaching degree. Maria Sanchez , the daughter of Mexican immigrants, has made a successful life for herself as a graduate of Duke Law School. She has a job at a prominent firm but has returned to her hometown to face a traumatic past to answer lingering questions. After Colin and Maria meet and fall in love, events from Maria’s past begin to surface and their happiness together will be tested in frightening ways. Will the past destroy the relationship they have begun to build or will their love protect and make it stronger?

In Golden Age, author Jane Smiley brings her last Hundred Years: a Family Saga trilogy of the Langdon family to its conclusion in current times. The book opens in 1987 where Michael and Richie, the twin sons of World War II hero Frank are working in government and finance in Washington and New York; Charlie, charming recent addition to the family, is deciding what he wants to do to make his mark in the world and Guthrie who was going to take over the farm in Iowa is deployed to Iraq and leaves the farm in the capable hands of his younger sister Felicity. This book is the culmination of the centuryspanning portrait of a dynamic family and the times in which they lived, loved and died. It is Smiley’s storytelling at its best. After Alice by Gregory Maguire of Wicke fame is a magical new twist on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll which was published 150 years ago this year. In Maguire’s version, Ada, a friend of Alice’s, is off to visit her friend but arrives a few minutes too late and falls down the rabbit hole herself thus beginning her quest to find Alice and bring her home from the world below.

What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die soon? Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There’s no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact. The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People are walking off the job—but not Hank Palace. He’s investigating a death by hanging in a city that sees a dozen suicides every week—except this one feels suspicious, and Palace is the only cop who cares. The first in a trilogy, The Last Policeman offers a mystery set on the brink of an apocalypse. As Palace’s investigation plays out under the shadow of 2011GV1, we’re confronted by hard questions way beyond “whodunit.” What basis does civilization rest upon? What is life worth? What would any of us really do, if our days were numbered?

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful by Sarah Farrell

Florence Welch and Isa “Machine” Summers have done it again with Florence + The Machine’s third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful (Island Records). The duo combines the influence of Grace Slick’s contralto voice with Baroque pop to create a unique sound that has been described by Dee Lockett from the band Vultures as “fiery rock”. The album’s first single, “Ship to Wreck” charted number eleven on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs. The track features an upbeat, “poppy” guitar riff, reminiscent of sixties psychedelic rock. The song as a whole pays particular attention to the baroque influence of the album, which is apparent through the guitar’s similarity to a spritely harpsichord. The album’s second single, “What Kind of Man” spent two weeks at number seven on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs. The song features a haunting introduction composed by Welch’s synthesized voice doubled harmonically and escalates into a crooning ballad. The eleven-track album is full of great songs, every single one allowing Welch to display her ethereal vocals. Some artists similar to Florence + The Machine are Adele and Ellie Goulding.
