Of course you are a library user with your own card, but have you shared with others what “The Smartest Card in Your Wallet” can do? September is library card sign up month across the country and there is no better time to encourage the other members of your family, your friends and co-workers to get a library card!
DIRECTOR Leann Johnson EDITOR Trisha Noack DESIGNER Laura Fehr
Anyone renewing or getting a new card during September will be entered into a drawing for a fabulous selection of books. There will be one adult and one child winner drawn at each branch location and on the Bookmobile.
When you are talking to someone about getting a library card, how do you respond to, “I don’t have time to go to the library!” Remind them that the library now has electronic resources to meet most needs right on the website and that those resources can be used from anywhere over the internet with a Peoria Public Library card. From one-on-one live tutoring for students of all ages in BrainFuse to the product comparisons of Consumer Reports to downloadable e-books and audiobooks, a library card unlocks the door to 24/7 library service. A library card is an essential school supply for students of all ages. Be sure all the students in your house have one as they return to school. With a library card they can find the resources they need to complete projects, broaden their knowledge and prepare to achieve their goals. With tools like Tumblebooks Library and Cloud that help readers or Mango Languages that let you practice another language or improve your English, having a library card is an essential for school success. Encourage everyone you meet this September to sign up for or renew their library card!
New Renewal and Magazine Policy Starts September 2
The Board of Peoria Public Library voted in July to allow patrons a maximum of three renewals of each item and to change the total number of magazines that can be checked out on an account at one time to 10. Items on hold for another patron cannot be renewed and must be returned for the next person. In order to make the best use of your renewals at the self-check counter, if something is missed, print your receipt and only place items on the pad that did not check out the first time or you will be using a renewal. You can also ask staff for help. On the website, only renew items that are due, do not click “renewal all.” On Shoutbomb on your cell phone, use RL to renew from a list. In all cases, these measures will keep you from using a renewal too soon. The changes to the policy bring Peoria Public Library in line with the policies of surrounding libraries with whom we share resources and will allow more patrons to use the materials. The policy takes effect on September 2.
This Month in Peoria History by Ellie Nielsen
9-9-1873: It was announced that Simon Trefzger moved his bakery into the building at Main and Monroe Streets. 9-11-1888: The Edna Home for single working ladies opened on this day. 9-21-1895: The cornerstone for the library was set yesterday. 9-7-1896: Glen Oak Park was dedicated on this day with nearly 30,000 persons in attendance. 9-10-1912: The School Board announced their decision to build Central High School at North and Richmond Streets. 9-9-1927: A 7.58” rain fell in 24 hours in Peoria causing damage of about half a million dollars. Many railroads and highways were closed. 9-18-1938: A large crowd watched the first LeTourneau steel house float across the Illinois River yesterday. “The largest and finest pottery in the world is being built at Peoria, Illinois.” This statement from the New York Tribune in November of 1859 was referring to the American Pottery Company. Established in 1859 by a group of Peoria businessmen, it employed a renowned New England potter by the name of Christopher Webber Fenton and Fenton’s designer Daniel Greatbach. Illinois was already one of the main centers of pottery production by this time. Due to the rich clay deposits throughout the state, it was not uncommon for potters to migrate to Illinois in search of employment. The Civil War coupled with a fire at the pottery plant led to the demise of the American Pottery Company in 1863. Around this time, with purchased interests in the American Pottery Company, two men, William Travis and John Bryner founded the Peoria Pottery Company. Several years after it was founded, the Peoria Pottery Company became a part of the Lydia Moss Bradley Estate and thereafter became one of the largest manufacturers of pottery in the nation. It remained in operation until 1901. At one point in time, 9 million pounds of clay were being shipped annually from Scottsburg, Illinois to Peoria by rail and 15 tons of coal were being burned daily in the production of the pottery.
Author Sandy Miller to read Little Twig at Three Branches Local author Sandy Miller will read from her book Little Twig on Tuesday, September 9 at Lincoln Branch at 10:00 a.m.; on Wednesday, September 10 at Lakeview Branch at 10:30 a.m. and on Friday, September 26 at North Branch at 10:30 a.m. Hope brightly shines within the pages of Little Twig. Though lacking strength from an unexpected calamity, yet because of a courageous choice, a broken and frightened little oak twig finds friendship and worth he never imagined possible. In joyful rhyme and with radiant illustrations, this tender tale captures the sweet affection and playfulness between a child and the world outside. In addition to reading her book, Sandy has a special craft planned. Her book is available for purchase and she will sign it. A portion of the proceeds from book sales go to support The Friends of Peoria Public Library.

Liked That Book? Try This One! By Liesl Prentice
Here are some recommended readalikes based off some of the currently popular items at Peoria Public Library. If You Like The Husband’s Secret, try... Heart and Soul by Maeve Binchy: Given the difficult task of building an underfunded clinic in an Irish community caught between the past and present, Dr. Clara Casey finds her task complicated by her problematic personal life, her colorful and diverse staff, and the difficult patients they serve. Why you might like it: Lives intersect (not always happily) from all walks of life in these two novels. Both are characterdriven, have layered plots, and realistic dialogue. Heart and Soul is a lighter read. Sweet Salt Air by Barbara Delinsky: Two childhood friends reunite at a summer retreat, each harboring a horrible secret that would test the bounds of their longtime relationship if revealed. Why you might like it: Both novels focus on secrets and the relationships they can damage if brought to light. While The Husband’s Secret has darker elements, Sweet Salt Air is a lighter, heartwarming read. Nantucket Nights by Elin Hilderbrand: Two women are shattered when their third companion accidentally drowns, and in the aftermath, they realize that their loss extends beyond grief as their layers of secrets and connections are gradually revealed. Why you might like it: Both begin with the protagonists encountering a tragedy. To move forward, the female characters must come to terms with the past. More Like Her by Liza Palmer: When Emma Dunham, the woman they believe is the height of female perfection, is murdered by her husband, Francis, Lisa and Jill discover that things aren’t always what they seem, which forces them to come to terms with the secrets of their own lives. Why you might like it: Both characterdriven novels feature realistic, complex women, having to deal with secrets and murder before they can go on with their lives.

October Book Clubs at Peoria Public Library Join a book club at Peoria Public Library this month. New members are always welcome! Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Below Zero by CJ Box. Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett’s teenage daughter, Sheridan, receives a text message with a staggering implication: that April, the foster daughter thought to have died 6 years ago in a massacre, is still alive. If it really is April who’s texting, she’s in danger, and for Pickett, the only thing worse than losing her the first time would be losing her again. Pickett must negotiate FBI politics, recruit his fugitive friend Nate Romanowski, and take a crash course in cellphone-tracking technology to find her. The Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club meets on Monday, October 13 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss America Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett. Under a pink moon, there is a perfect little town not found on any map. In that town, there are quiet streets lined with pretty houses, houses that conceal the strangest things. After a couple years of hard traveling, excop Mona Bright inherits her long-dead mother’s home in Wink, New Mexico. And the closer Mona gets to her mother’s past, the more she understands that the people of Wink are very, very different ... The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell: Adventurer, Adviser to Kings, Ally of Lawrence of Arabia by Janet Wallach. A marvelous story of an adventurous woman abandoning Victorian England and journeying deep into the Arab heart of the Middle East, at a time when women did not go unchaperoned, to report on “every grain of sand”. Filled with intrigue, history and drama in a part of the world that is still on the front page. A must-read for any history buff, this book reads like fiction but it’s all true. For more information call 309-497-2186. Bibliophiles will meet on Tuesday, October 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Good Poems, American Places by Garrison Keillor. An anthology of poetic works celebrates the American landscape with diverse selections by such contributors as Nikki Giovanni, William Carlos Williams, and Naomi Shihab Nye. For more information, call Carol May at (309) 692-1020 or email cmay1223@ comcast.net. The Read On Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Branch to discuss Who Asked You? by Terry McMillan. The author of Waiting to Exhale, has written an eighth novel, in which she gives exuberant voice to characters who reveal how we live now--at least as lived in a racially diverse Los Angeles neighborhood. Who Asked You? opens as Trinetta leaves her two young sons with her mother, Betty Jean, and promptly disappears. BJ, a trademark McMillan heroine, already has her hands full dealing with her other adult children, two opinionated sisters, an ill husband, and her own postponed dreams--all while holding down a job as a hotel maid. Call 497-2601 for more information. Intercontinental Readers will continue to meet to discuss novels by American and Irish authors via Skype at Main Library
LL 1 at 1:00 p.m. once every three months with readers in Ireland. The next meeting will be November 18, 2014 and we will discuss The Umbrella Tree by Mary Stanley. In a novel that spans two continents, The Umbrella Tree is a compelling and moving story, which is full of surprises. There are secrets, lies, deception, love, humour and loyalty: the best and worst of human nature. Mary Stanley’s sixth novel is a beautifully written, evocative and wise story that will stay with you long after you’ve read the final page. Call 309-4972143 for more information. Club Read will meet on Wednesday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Benediction by Kent Haruf. Despite the travails that each of these families faces, together they form bonds strong enough to carry them through the most difficult of times. Bracing, sad and deeply illuminating, Benediction captures the fullness of life by representing every stage of it, including its extinction, as well as the hopes and dreams that sustain us along the way. YA for Adults Book Club will meet on the third Tuesday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick. Seven stories of passion and love separated by centuries but mysteriously intertwined— this is a tale of horror and beauty, tenderness and sacrifice. An archaeologist who unearths a mysterious artifact, an airman who finds himself far from home, a painter, a ghost, a vampire, and a Viking: the seven stories in this compelling novel all take place on the remote Scandinavian island of Blessed where a curiously powerful plant that resembles a dragon grows. From award-winning author Marcus Sedgwick comes a book about passion and preservation and ultimately an exploration of the bounds of love.
