Grants for literacy, technology, science and the Arts were awarded to 17 Peoria Uni�ied educators during the program. The Peoria Education Fo u n d a t i o n , f o u n d e d in 1987, is a non-pro�it 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to support and enrich education in the Peoria Uni�ied School District.


Peoria Unified To Launch Before-and-A�er School Program in August at Four Glendale Schools Beginning the new school year, Peoria Uni�ied will provide before-and-after school care at four district schools located in Glendale. The Extending Children’s Everyday Learning, EXCEL, program will be available at Desert Palms, Desert Valley, Foothills and Marshall Ranch elementary schools and will provide a place where students can excel in a supervised, safe and enriched environment. The program will be

available beginning Aug. 6, for kindergarten through eighth-grade students that are enrolled at any of the four schools. EXCEL will run from 6 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. for

schools with an 8 a.m. start time and 6 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. for schools with 8:40 a.m. start time. Students can attend the EXCEL program after school until 6 p.m.

Peoria Unified Grads Take in Record $57 Million in Scholarships Peoria Uni�ied seniors received a record $57.9 million in scholarships to post-secondary institutions this year. This amount includes scholarships for athletics, in-state and out-of-state merit-based recognition, private donor a n d vo c a t i o n a l s c h o o l scholarships. Ironwood High School brought in $11.8 million in scholarships. Ironwood graduate Oluremi “Remi” Oso is a top scholarship recipient, attaining more than $1.6 million in scholarships. He received scholarships from Ivy League schools such as Columbia and Harvard. Oso also received a Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship and was a National Achievement Scholarship Finalist. Oso was

awarded a scholarship from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and from Stanford University where he will attend this fall to major in Computer Science or Engineering.

Oso was considered a full International Baccalaureate diploma candidate by his junior year and excelled in all of his classes, all while participating in wrestling,

Vistancia Jumps for the Heart Vistancia Elementary students raised more than $8,750 for the American Heart Association by participating in Jump Rope for Heart. The top fundraisers: Taylor Perricone, Mikey Barthel and for the second year in a row Jenna Schne�ler, who raised $710! P.E. Teacher Steve Cushing shaved his head because the students met the goal of $8,000. The students collected over $4,600 online using an AHA personal webpage, emails and social media.

Throughout the school year, guidance counselors and career center specialists help to highlight seniors and their achievements to various colleges to identify potential scholarship opportunities. To assist students with college planning, testing preparation, �inancial aid and scholarships, the district has a Career Center at each its seven high schools. In addition, each Career Center specialist maintains a scholarship database and the information is used to contact students who might be interested in a particular scholarship, important deadlines and scheduling college visits.

Water Safety is Theme for Oakwood Poster Contest Winner

Oakwood Elementary third-grader Hattie Hearnen, won the Ariz. Office Technologies’ poster design contest that promotes swimming safety and drowning prevention. Her design will be printed on posters and fliers to be distributed statewide to retailers, schools, sports and civic venues and other places children, parents and grandparents frequent. Her prize included Diamondbacks VIP �ckets and a new copier for Oakwood.

Centennial Team Wins SPARK App Award

Centennial High so�ware development team, Kylee Burgess, Jiaqi Wu and Mikayla Whalen, received plaques for First All-Girl Team and Best Overall App in the ASU and town of Gilbert SPARK joint ini�a�ve.

Centennial High students Kylee Burgess, Jiaqi Wu and Mikayla Whalen recently received two awards from the SPARK App League for a mobile app they created for the Town of Gilbert’s Fire and Rescue Department. The awards they received are: First All-Girl Team to Submit an App and Best Overall App. SPARK stands for Schools Participate in App Resource and Knowledge and it is a joint initiative between Arizona State University (ASU) Polytechnic and the Town of Gilbert, Arizona. Burgess, Wu and Whalen, enrolled in the Advanced Software Development class, attended the SPARK kickoff by invitation from ASU, and chose to complete the app as their software development project. SPARK is intended to provide recognition to high school software developers to “SPARK” their innovation in creating real-world applications that utilize Town of Gilbert data sets.

Centennial High Auto Teams Win Scholarships

Sunset Heights Elementary Principal Rae Conelley talks with incoming students at a meet & greet recep�on held on May 12. Nearly 500 parents and students a�ended the event and were the first to hear the new school mascot is the Cubs and the colors are blue and orange.

Centennial High’s Lance Aguire and Spencer Langfi� each earned a $25,000 scholarship and the second place trophy in the state Ford/AAA compe��on. Also, Devin Doherty and Derek Lintner took first place in the UTI Top Tech Challenge earning $1,000 each in scholarships. The school was awarded a toolbox worth $4,500. Pioneer Elementary First-Grader Takes First Place in National Writers Contest Crimson Wooten a student at Pioneer Elementary won �irst place in the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Kids Writers Contest for the secondgrade division. Although she is in �irst-grade, she studies Language Arts with a second-grade class. H e r w i n n i n g s to r y,

which she also illustrated, called “The Jelly�ish and the Shark,” is about making good choices and being a good friend. The story is about a mean shark and a kind jelly�ish that helps the shark, even though the shark is mean to her. Through the kindness of the jelly�ish, the shark

changes for the better. Crimson’s story was selected �irst by PBS 8 in Phoenix, and then entered into the National Contest. Her entry was one of 12 top entries in the nation. Crimson’s prize package includes LeapFrog’s LeapReader Reading and Writing System.
