Peoria Unified Continues to be Your Best Choice It’s a new school year – thank your teachers! When I look back, the people who had Ma Bullock the greatest Governing Board Member impact on my life were family, friends and teachers. As you start a new school year, your teach-

ers are excited and a little nervous doing their best to make your classes fun (even though you get homework!) and informative. To have a great school year, do what you can to help your teacher by turning your assignments in on time, answering questions and looking for ways to keep your classroom clean. If everyone works hard to focus on learning,

EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY, PREPARED TO SHAPE TOMORROW

your teacher will take you on a wonderful journey that you will remember throughout your life. We all like to receive compliments when we work hard and it helps us to try even harder. That goes for kids as well as adults. Remember to thank your teachers and I guarantee you that you will learn more than you ever thought possible!

New to Calendar: Full-Day Teacher Training Days The district added four full-day Professional Development days to the calendar this year, the irst which will take place Tuesday, Sept. 2. Rest assured, when school is closed for a fullday for teacher and staff training, it is not a vacation day for staff, teachers or principals. Full-day and early-release days allow for continuous learning so that our teachers and staff have access to the best, most effective teaching strategies to reach all students. Professional development is ongoing train-

ing; much like a doctor or nurse would continue their learning in order to stay on top of the latest research and methods in their ields. The district and the cities of Peoria and Glendale offer the following programs which can help with child care on full-day Professional Development days: l City of Peoria AM/ PM program: 6 a.m.-6 p.m. $24 plus $5 (optional) for lunch at Cheyenne and Coyote Hills elementary schools. Community Turns Out for New School Dedication

Peyton Williams in fourth-grade at Sunset Heights Elementary cuts the ribbon with Superintendent Dr. Denton Santarelli, governing board members Ma Bullock, Hal Borhauer, James Kistner, Kathy Knecth and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Heather Cruz.

Peoria Uniied celebrated with nearly 200 students and community members at the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony of Sunset Heights Elementary. Although it was pouring outside, the rain did not dampen the excitement inside!

Three students were invited to the stage to share why their school is special: second-grader Tristen Raymond, fourth-grader Hollan Lewis and sixthgrader Adriana Aguirre. Peoria Uniied Governing Board member James Kistner, whose three

children attend Sunset Heights, shared why the school is special for his family, that it was built with the community in mind, adjacent to the City of Peoria’s newest neighborhood park and the Sunrise Mountain public library. Principal Rae Conelley thanked those who shared a part, large or small, in the realization and construction of the school, which was on time and under budget. Dr. Denton Santarelli made a special presentation to M ar y Ly n n M c C o rd and her family, as the school’s Media Center was dedicated in memory of the late Joseph J. 125-Year Alumni Feature: Journalist Shares Her Story Peoria Uniied, proudly celebrating 125 years of educating students, is collecting stories submitted by Peoria Uniied alumni. Chelsey Davis, CBS 5 trafic reporter and journalist is a Peoria Uniied alumnus who attended Oasis Elementary and graduated from Centennial High. Here is her story: “The Peoria Uniied School District enabled me to have unique dreams and impact lives. I was heavily involved in organizations from my time at Oasis Elementary to Centennial High. I had the privilege to meet with the superintendent to discuss how to better pre p a re st u dent s for college, attended weekly administrative meetings and was recognized in the community and on campus for my club involvement. On graduation day, I was a keynote speaker, and was allowed to lead my class in ‘the wave.’ It was symbolic. Then, I challenged the

student body to create waves in their lives. I urged everyone to remember that irst impressions are powerful, but it’s best to leave a lasting one.”

Chelsey Davis

Are you an alumni or know of someone who is? If so, we invite you to be a part of our Alumni Impact Project and celebrate the legacy with us. In 250 words or less, tell us your Peoria Uniied story. New Student Info System Coming Soon The district’s IMT Department anticipates the new student information system, Synergy, will be available to parents midSeptember. Utilizing the Synergy system, parents will be able to access their child’s progress in grades and additional records from a desktop, laptop, tablet or from Peoria Uniied’s mobile App. Synergy was fully functional on the irst day of school. Teachers and ofice staff are now more familiar with the system and can be more effective assisting parents. Look for more information soon on how you can access the new system via: emails, texts, recorded messages, social media and newsletters. To be sure you are informed, please contact your school’s ofice staff to and update your phone number and email address.
