Theme: Awaken Kenya’s beauty is something extraordinary, however to the rest of the world it’s just a country in Africa, a country in which others can steal its wealth, a country that has competent resources but incompetent people managing them, and that is why interference is necessary. Through “Awaken” Chala attempts to challenge these perceptions and present Kenya as it truly is.
Through the stunning imagery of natural habitats, bare Savannah’s and dramatic sunsets Chala attempts to portray Kenya in its natural state; beautiful when untouched. Attempting to challenge the common perception of what is progress and how much of it is necessary for Africa as a whole to thrive.
Using discarded rope and tree branches Chala has been able to create a ladder in which digital manipulation has been used to add the photos visible.
Chala boys are calling to all natives of Kenya to awaken immediately! And discard the Eurocentric standard for beauty and immerse ourselves in the beauty around, realizing we are much more valuable than the monetary amount we are fed.
In recent memory, Kenya has been described as ‘a hotbed of terror’ among many other derivative terms along with the continent as a whole. ‘Awaken’ rewinds the clock to a time before our capitalist society in which the lion ruled the land as the king of the jungle.
Annual Art Competition 2020
At the same time challenging those of us who live blindly in the Nairobi metropolitan area to discover and connect with Kenya in its true form, to awaken!

To display all of the issues that plague our modern society would be a ceaseless endeavour. This year in particular, it has become harder for many of us to celebrate the triumphs that we as humans have had as the dark cloud of pain and grief linger above our achievements. Within our own continent, we continue to struggle against the effects of colonial rule and the lack of trust in our leaders while the Western world has seen an eruption of anger towards the mistreatment of minority communities. We all however endure a more devastating challenge which is the collapse of the natural world. Every single one of these issues has shed light on the significance of unity between us, as the only way we can begin to see meaningful change is to collude. But to acknowledge these issues is the first step to overcoming them. We as Elementaita exhibit what we believe are the biggest concerns at present. Inside the box, you can find books and images to represent the continuous struggle of the African people against colonialism and corruption, the mass production of animals, climate change and the fight against social injustices. To create the book spines, we have used recycled cardboard while the images within the box were created by our very own Elementaita girls and inserted using Photoshop.
Annual Art Competition 2020
By doing this, we hope to raise awareness within the Peponi School community and highlight the perpetual issues that affect us all in one way or another. We may think the smaller problems that transpire everyday are what is most important in the short life we are given, but there is a bigger war to fight, a greater purpose that we must all strive to work toward.

The world is crying, yet nobody can hear. The oceans are choked by plastic waste. The air is suffocated with smog. Society is smothered by discrimination, corruption and disease. With rampant poaching and natural disasters, our ecosystem is collapsing and life itself is on the brink of extinction. Yet we, as humanity, are choosing to turn a blind eye to the problems facing the Earth. When will we wake up from our slumber? When will we step up to these issues and tackle them? Are we so paralysed by fear that we can’t see that the future is in our own hands? Locked in a trance, humans have become so occupied in their own world that they are neglecting the urgent needs of our world. So, we say, “Wake up!” Open your eyes and look around. Can’t you see that the world is at its breaking point? The year 2020 has proven to be a pivotal moment of realisation for humanity. The ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement has erupted globally to protest against systemic racism and police brutality. The Covid-19 pandemic has emphasised the need for proper hygiene and the necessity of protecting our loved ones. From explosions in Beirut’s ports to deadly wildfires in California and Australia. From Hurricanes in the Atlantic to cyclones in the Pacific. From Armenia-Azerbhaijan conflict to disastrous Presidential debates – what has our world come to? Jipe’s house piece encompasses these travesties that need critical attention. As a house, we believe that transformative change is urgent. A universal skin tone highlights the need to find unity in diversity. We have chosen to use bottle caps as out primary recycled material as it represents that we shouldn’t bottle up our emotions and concerns. With this piece, we hope to create a sense of urgency to prevent irreversible damage to our world. Let us all come together to resolve the disconnect between society and Mother Nature, to preserve the earth’s beauty for future generations.
