Welcom e back Peponi !

A letterMorning to the Parents Monday Assembly Dear Peponi House Parents, On a Saturday after half term we intend to invite parents into school so that you may have a look around the new buildings. We are all enjoying the light, airy space and I am sure you will be very impressed. The outdoor environment is looking better and better and the recent rain has been very good for the grass, especially important after so much time and effort has gone into the new landscaping and planting. Just before the half term break I had the pleasure of spending time out on the field with the Year 2 children. They were very friendly and chatty and the chance to get to know them a little better was a great pleasure. Being a Headmaster you often find yourself involved in what seem like ‘bigger’ matters and therefore distracted from the day to day reality of school life and its people. I have heard it said that it is important to take care of the little things in life as when you look back in years to come you might actually realise that those little things were in fact the big things. This is clearly never more true than in relation to our home lives. With this in mind I hope you have the opportunity to relax a little over the half term break with your children, friends and families. Our community has done very well since the start of term, considering the restraints we have been under. Lots of hard work and much learning has taken place. Your support in keeping a close eye on the children’s health and keeping them at home occasionally, as a precaution, has been very much appreciated. Here at school we share almost constant reminders to socially distance, wear masks, wash hands and ventilate. The children have generally been very good about all of this. I asked one of our new teachers today how he found being at Peponi. He said that this was a dream job; ‘fabulous school and great kids’. Another told me that he felt the children seemed especially engaged in lessons. This is obviously all for the good. The children even sit very politely through my Assemblies and sometimes clap at the end! They are indeed generally engaged and are engaging too; certainly my experience with the Year 2s this morning was most agreeable. When we come back after the half term holiday we will see with fresh eyes our wonderful new school and the fantastic opportunities it holds. Our school environment inspires hard work and encourages co-operation. This, along with our supportive community, will bring out the best in everyone. There is much to look forward to. Despite all of the challenges, last half term was a most successful one. Thank you for helping make that happen and for all of your support. We hope you all stay well and wish you a very restful holiday. Yours sincerely, Neil Price

The Battle of Marathon The Athenians battled against the Persians who wanted to make their empire bigger. There were many more Persians than Athenians, so the Athenians asked Sparta for help but they would not come. The Greek leader, Miltiades came up with a good plan.

The Greek leader knew the Persians (in white) would put their strongest soldiers and archers in the middle so he put his strongest Athenians (in blue) on the flanks (sides). He told his middle soldiers to put up their shields and run faster than the archers could load their bows. This meant that they would shoot over them and use up their arrows.

The Persians eventually pushed the Athenians back in the middle. The most powerful Athenian fighters then surged down either side of the Persians as they pushed forward.

This scared the Persians at the back and sent the them running back to their ships. When this happened, even more Persians followed, leaving very few of their soldiers on the battle field.

This left those who had pushed forward to be surrounded by the Athenians. The Persian army lost over 6,000 soldiers compared to only 192 Athenians! Pheidippides then ran 26 miles to Athens to tell of their victory. Sadly he died after passing on the news.

The Spring Festival, that is the Lunar New year, has a history of more than 4000 years. It originated from people’s fear that a monster called ‘Nian’ would attack people on winter nights, so they stayed up all night, lit fires and lights to keep their homes as bright as possible, and made noises to scare off the monster. Chinese people all over the world hold various activities to celebrate the Spring Festival. The main purpose of these activities is to get rid of the monster and pray for good luck in the new year. The Spring Festival is the first day of the lunar calendar, but in Chineseinhabited areas, it usually ends on the 15th of January. During these 15 days, Chinese people will have family reunion, celebrate and entertain and adopt a very grand and complicated diet. Spring Festival is the biggest festival for Chinese people. Some countries and regions in the world also have the custom of celebrating the Spring Festival. According to statistics, nearly 20 countries and regions have designated the Chinese Spring Festival as a legal holiday. In modern society, the activities of the Spring Festival have been much simplified, and most families will paste Spring Festival couplets, decorate their houses with red objects, eat dumplings together, and the children visit the elderley to pay their resepects with New year greetings. The elderly, in turn, give the children red envelopes with some money and set off firecrackers.

Sai’s Concert

Mukuru Art Club

We are extremely proud to share the link to Sai Mohandas’ First Charity Concert to support his charities ‘Give Back Hope Initiative’ and ‘Mukuru Art Club’. Sai arranged the concert during the holidays which helped him to raise enough to give sweaters & crocs to 80 children and a Christmas lunch for 157 families of Give Back Hope Initiative. He was also able to contribute towards a food drive supplying food bags with enough food for 2 weeks for 126 families by Mukuru Art club headed by Adam Masava. Due to Covid restrictions we decided to record it and spread the word around for the second round as he would like to sponsor education for couple of children starting in January. To support Sai’s cause, please send me an email on registrar@peponihouse.sc.ke and I will be very happy to put you in touch with Sai’s family. Thank you Sai for your help and amazing generosity.
