Peponi House

DECEMBER 2021

A letterMorning from Mr.Assembly Price Monday Dear Peponi House Parents, It was lovely to watch the Nativity productions with parents earlier this week. The performances were sparkling. We very much hope this is a sign of things to come, and that we will be able to welcome parents in to school more often in the new year. Of course, much will depend upon how the covid situation develops in the weeks and months ahead, but we are hoping for the best. Whenever I watch a Nativity event I am struck by how the children’s characters are already evident. There are those who are natural performers and those who are reticent, those who are loud and those who are quiet. They are all young people finding their way and for us it is wonderful to be part of that. Final Assemblies too were an opportunity to reflect upon all the progress that everyone has made this term. Everywhere you look the children have become more skilled and they have learned new knowledge. They have probably had some ups and downs, but the essential trajectory is upwards and features much positive development. Not everyone gets prizes, but everyone can be recognised for their endeavours. Well done one and all. This has been a very long term. The Peponi staff have applied themselves with great dedication, and thank you for working so helpfully with us to make this these months since September as positive as they could be. With very best wishes for an enjoyable holiday and a healthy and prosperous new year, Yours sincerely,

Neil Price

We had an amazing first-time experience in the Science lab. They tested different foods like bread, orange juice, egg whites and potatoes for starch, fats and proteins as part of our topic on nutrition. We also modelled human teeth using playdough. Then labelled and also wrote the functions of the different teeth.

Mini COP2 The children identified the following areas of concern: • energy • food and farming • the oceans • the forests • health and happiness

Year 5 had a mini COP26 summit to dis today. They identified 5 major areas of delegations to come up with solutions. came up with a suggested solution that t doing their part to save the planet.

ENERGY Strict laws for companies who are in the business of producing energy through fossil fuels to stop this and instead put their money into research and development of renewable energy like solar, wind and hydroelectric. The children themselves: To switch off lights when you are not in the room and unplug electronics when they are finished charging. FOOD AND FARMING Governments to encourage local farming and markets to cut down on transportation. Grow local, buy local. To reuse existing farming land rather than cutting down forest areas. More sustainable farming. The children themselves: To try to cultivate their own vegetable patch at home using chemical free fertilizers from their kitchen waste like 5P have been doing with their garden patch outside their classroom. THE OCEANS More patrol boats to monitor fishing quantities and that the nets have large enough holes so that young fish do not get caught and have a chance to breed. Governments to have strict rules regarding disposal of rubbish so that it does not end up in the seas. The children themselves: Whenever they are at the beach, they will pick up 5 pieces of rubbish off the beach.

scuss the major issues facing their planet f concern and then worked in small For each area of concern, they also they themselves can be responsible for

TIONS THE FORESTS Government to set aside more areas of greenbelt land like Karura Forest so that no building can happen on that land. Where roads and railways lines need to be built, try to avoid cutting down or destroying forests and natural habitats along the planned route by building on stilts above ground or underground tunnels. The children themselves: To plant trees wherever they can. And if their families need to cut down trees to build a house, for example, they plant 3 more trees to replace 1 that they cut down. HEALTH AND HAPPINESS Governments need to preserve green spaces for people who do not have gardens to have some space in which to enjoy nature. Governments need to make sure that there are strict rules against littering so people have clean drinking water and home environments. The children themselves: Take time to enjoy the nature that surrounds them, parks, national parks and forests.

Year 5

River Dances In Year 5 Humanities, we have rounded off our topic learning about rivers by expressing our understanding of river features through dance and movement. 5R and 5P paired this with a famous classical piece of music, The Moldau by the Czech composer Smetana which was specifically intended to evoke the sounds of one of Bohemia’s great rivers – the Vltava River. And 5T paired their dance with Johann Strauss’s more commonly recognisable piece, The Blue Danube. As you can see, there are some budding dance artists in Year 5. And kudos to the children for getting so enthusiastically involved.
