Mr. Blake’s Last Assembly Monday Morning Assembly

“We will miss your Assemblies Mr. Blake”

Our Peponi Scouts THE CHARITY CHALLENGE The scouts this term decided to take up a “charity challenge to help some of the needy families hard hit by the effects of covid-19. They were to think of jobs they could do within their homes which they would discuss with their parents. They would then get compensated commensurately to the work done. This was meant to help the scouts appreciate that their hard earned money would be used in a worthwhile venture. All money raised was to be channeled towards supporting 8 selected families within Kawangware area. The money they raised was used to get supplies for the families. The Scout Teachers then went to deliver the supplies to the selected families. Good work from the scouts for their sacrifice and commitment to put food on the table for someone who did not have. A big thank you to the parents for their support and well done to the scouts.

Sustainability and Global Environment Reduce, reuse, recycle are the three main things that you need to keep yourself healthy and the Earth healthy. It’s what you eat, it’s what you buy, it’s how you live. When we create less waste, our environment will get cleaner and we can lead a happier life for ourselves and the future generations. Choices, every day you make a choice whether it’s wasting food, buying unnecessary single-use-plastic, driving that extra mile to get the thing you want but don’t need. These have all been choices we have had to make, and many people have made the wrong choices without even knowing it. This needs to stop, we need to be sustainable. What is sustainability you ask? Well sustainability is when you take what you need and leave enough resources for the next generations. We need to stop the greediness, it’s not just me it’s you and you and everyone. Everyone needs to make a change. It doesn’t matter if the government says different because we need to do what’s right, we need to save our planet and we need everyone to help. By recycling we can reduce the amount of carbon waste that we have in our atmosphere, which will then lead to a less impact on the greenhouse effect. If we try and pollute less then we will reduce the average number of carbon emissions in the Earth which will reduce the greenhouse effect which means that the Earth will be a better place to live in. If we use renewable items, there will be enough for the future generations, if we use all of them now all that we are handing over to future generations is an empty world and we would have taken all the resources that they need to survive. We can link this to sustainability, which has an impact on the environment too. With the economy, we are transporting things overseas by plane which produces a lot of carbon when being transported over the seas which is causing black oceans. Animals are dying as of this and people still do not care of how we treat the environment. But if we try and follow everything to be sustainable then we can, no we will save the environment. If we save the environment, then we will hand over a happier world to the future generations. 4 ways to be sustainable: 1. Reduce need in fossil fuels 2. Reduce need in man-made chemicals/products. 3. Reduce destruction of nature/the environment. 4. Recycle How can you help? Firstly, many people might not know about global warming, plastic “islands” (gyres), the ice caps melting at increasing speeds, deforestation, greenhouse gases (OZONE layer), fossil fuels, animal extinction. Spread awareness and let people know about the truth instead of fake news. Start to use renewable sources, buy organic/ locally grown foods, try start veganism, use green energy. Be sustainable, help the environment and help make a change. Be a hero to all generations and the environment. Rohan Shah and Tessa Steel

Hello everybody. What do you do in your daily life? Do you go shopping? Do you drive your car around? Do you think about what happens when you throw something away? Well if you do these things have you ever thought about what has happened to make them? Well today we are going to be telling you how these things are made and also how easy it is to be more sustainable. Do you know what being sustainable is? Being sustainable means only taking enough resources from the environment to make sure that they will be enough left for future generations. How can you be more sustainable? Small things like taking your own re-useable bags to the supermarket or even walking to place that is less than a 5-minute drive away. Well all these small things matter a lot and if we change very few things, we can make a massive difference. Our need for fossil fuels is way too high and there are alternatives like wind or wave power, and we need to reduce our fossil fuel dosage. Do you ever think about the journey of something after you’ve thrown it away? Well did you know that a plastic bag takes over 400 years to decompose or it travels to the mighty seas and soon adds to massive plastic islands or gyres in the middle of the sea that are bigger than Mongolia. Recycling these items or even bringing your own bag make a huge difference and don’t you want to swim in the sea again? Did you know using a plant based alternative instead of meat tastes exactly the same. Buying a product from local supermarket is actually priceless because it’s made from the environment expense and we can’t put a price on our world. But even for us we need to change a lot, toxins are everywhere and are going to kill us and DID YOU KNOW THAT WE CONSUME DOUBLE THE AMOUNT THAT WE DID 50 YEARS AGO! Our present governments don’t care about the people or world but instead money. WE ARE TRASHING THE WORLD; WE ARE USING MORE THAN WE NEED AND WE NEED TO STOP. It’s not just for us or our children but for the existence of man. Do you want our rainforests to become deserts or would you rather make a change? Aahil and Nia

Year 2s Brilliant Boats

The Year 2s had a fun week creating boats. Our topic is Oceans and Seas so we discussed boats, different types of boats and what made boats float and move. The children then had to plan and design a model with materials that they had at home, they had to come up with ways that their boats would move and use materials that would not sink. They then had to make their boat and test it. After that they wrote a set of instructions explaining how they made the boat. Finally they analysed their boat and discussed what went right and what went wrong and how they would change it next time.

The first ever Peponi House Times Tables Rock Stars Premier League (PHTTRSPL) has finally come to an end. It was a very hotly contested competition with some outstanding individual and team performances. Our pupils participated with great enthusiasm and effort to make it an exciting and nail-biting tournament.

How it Worked: This was a league competition with tutor groups facing off against one another in head-to-head battles over 11 game weeks. Each match lasted for 5 days with students contributing to their class total by answering times table questions correctly. 2 points were awarded to the winning side and a bonus point was available for any team, winning or losing, that achieved an average of 750 correct answers per pupil – a very challenging target.

The Winners: It is with great pleasure that I can announce 6A as the winners of the first PHTTRSPL. They bravely fought off all the competition, finishing with a total of 29 points out of a possible 33, suffering just one defeat along the way. They also achieved the highest score throughout the tournament with a collective total of 315,486 correctly answered questions, at an average of 17,527 per pupil. It took a huge team effort with four members of 6A finishing among the top 10 performers. 6A will celebrate their victory with a pizza party – an extra tutor lunch on behalf of the maths department. In the current circumstances, it may take some time for them to be able to enjoy this reward, but it will happen at the earliest opportunity. Well done to 6A for their outstanding effort in winning the inaugural PHTTRSPL.

The Other Runners and Riders: 6A were made to work incredibly hard for their victory. Up until the halfway stage, it looked as if 8T or 8W could win the league, both putting in some fantastic performances including when they faced off against each other, answering a whopping 151,993 answers correctly between them in just five days. However, when they both dropped away, it was left to 6A and 6B to battle it out for victory, all the way up to the final game week. The top 10 performers in the whole competition, along with their individual scores can be seen in the table below. Ndiritu Kamwere finished with the highest number of correct answers in the school with a massive 120,920. That is an average of almost 11,000 per game week – an incredible achievement. To put it into perspective, Kamwere answer more questions correctly by himself than six tutor groups managed to achieve. Each of the pupils will be

awarded a merit certificate for their achievement. Should other students be interested in finding out their total score for the competition, they should contact Mr Taylor. The most valuable player for each team – the individual who contributed the most points – can be found in the following table. These pupils will all be awarded an edible prize once we are back at school. Given its success, the PHTTRSPL is sure to return next year where 6A will be eager to defend their title and 11 other teams will be desperate to wrestle it from them. If you have any suggestions for how to make it more exciting and competitive, then please send them to Mr Taylor. On behalf of the whole mathematics department, well done to 6A and every student in the senior department who contributed to a fantastic competition. Mr Taylor.
