DIG INTO A TRUE CRIME HIT

Two of the country’s most talented journalists will be on the Sunshine Coast this month to share tales from behind the microphones on their award winning podcasts.

Hedley Thomas and Matthew Condon are both accomplished journalists and creators of two highly successful true-crime podcasts, The Teacher’s Pet and Shandee’s Story.

They will be discussing their work on April 20 at The Events Centre in Caloundra, offering insight into the complex process of uncovering cold cases that had remained unsolved for decades.

The event is designed as an “in discussion” format, with a focus on Hedley’s journey as he doggedly pursued justice for Lynnette Dawson, a Sydney mother who disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

FREE TRAINING FOR TOURISM ROLES

TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY OPERATORS MAY BEEN KEEN TO OFFER THEIR STAFF ACCESS TO FREE ONLINE TRAINING COURSES SPONSORED BY THE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT.

With finding and retaining staff still a major issue for the tourism industry the Queensland Government has joined forces with the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) to produce a series of targeted online courses.

The new program forms part of the Queensland government’s $3.6 million investment into the Tourism Training and Skills Support Strategy, with $803,000 committed to upskilling tourism employees through micro-credentialing courses.

With thousands of job vacancies right now, the free courses are designed to help timepoor tourism operators retain, train, and upskill new and current staff with industryspecific skills.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Brett Fraser said the job vacancy challenge was very real.

“We currently have more than 4,500 tourism and hospitality job vacancies to fill in Queensland,” Brett said.

“This translates to hundreds to cafes, hotels, galleries, and tourism experiences needing trained staff to meet consumer demand.

“The global pandemic has exacerbated the need for tourism and hospitality businesses to continuously onboard, reskill and upskill new and existing employees.

“The micro-credentialing program should be a game changer for our industry.

“We’re anticipating strong interest in the free program. Five hundred tourism and hospitality businesses will be able to quickly upskill the workforce they need, and they’ll be able to improve workforce retention.”

Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills

Development Di Farmer said the government was always looking for ways to boost employment.

“As a part of the Good people. Good jobs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022–2032, we continue to look at ways to boost Queensland’s skilled workforce, flexible learning options and workplace practices.

“Micro-credentials is one of the ways we are effectively upskilling workers.

“The time and resources small businesses spend trying to fill labour shortages can add up as they take on every role they need to keep their business running, and this free Workforce Development Course will be a valuable opportunity for businesses around the state.”

For more information and to register a business for the free micro-credentialing courses, visit the QTIC website at https://www. qtic.com.au/workforce-development/MicroCredentialing/.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON LIONS PARK

LANDSCAPE PLAN FOR LIONS PARK AND NORRIE JOB PARK, COOLUM

I encourage you to take the time to provide feedback on the landscape plan for Lions and Norrie Job Park before April 3.

This important green space, between the beach and the road, needs a freshen up to make it more welcoming and accessible for all our community.

Two previous rounds of community engagement in 2016 and 2022 have helped to inform the landscape plan which includes: major drainage upgrade works;

• increasing open green space – reshaping the land previously occupied by the open grassed drain so that it is more usable;

• new accessible pedestrian pathway;

• new public amenities building;

• new picnic and barbecue shelters and seating; new outdoor exercise stations, drinking fountain and bike racks;

• a 240m continuation of the three m wide shared pedestrian and cycle path;

• new park entry signage, landscaping and shade trees; an upgrade to the existing beach shower and bus shelter;

• and investigations for a potential pump track area.

Visit haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to fill in the online survey.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA

The community have done a great job in keeping our beaches and parks clean with both the Clean Up for the Hatchlings event and Clean Up Australia event.

I was surprised at how little rubbish we found during Clean Up Australia compared to other years and thank Raw Energy Coolum for hosting the event and to the general community for keeping rubbish out of the

bush and beach and in the bin where it belongs. Keep up the great work!

GOOD NEWS ON BAIL BREACH LAW

UPDATE FROM PARLIAMENT

Last month in Parliament we witnessed a watershed moment when Labor finally, after eight years of watering down the youth justice laws, adopted the LNP policy of breach of bail. While this alone is no silver bullet for solving the youth crime epidemic, it is an important step forward. We need to give police the resources and tough laws they need to do their job, and keep our community safe.

CCTV INSTALLED

As part of the ongoing works to bust congestion and improve safety on our roads, TMR has just finished installing CCTV on Yandina-Coolum Road, at the intersection with Barnes Lane in Coolum. The CCTV will be used by TMR’s traffic management centre to monitor traffic flow in the area, and to adjust the traffic signals to better manage the congestion during peak periods.

TRAILBLAZING WOMEN

I was honoured to host a table of exceptional local businesswomen as part of International Women’s Day last month. This trailblazing group of women are achieving great success in their respective fields, taking out state and national awards, and not only are they great role models for young women setting out on their careers, they’re using their innovation to become leaders in their industries, from right here in our own backyard.

Congratulations to Ami Bateman and Sian Murray of Pleasant State, USC Lecturer and social media expert Dr Karen Sutherland, Emma Gibbons of Huds and Toke, and Ellie Degraeve of Go for Zero.

COOL NEWS FOR COOLUM MEALS ON WHEELS

in the latest round of Gambling grants, securing $29,986 for a new fridge/freezer. This funding couldn’t have come at a better time for the organization, which is busier than ever providing nutritious meals and social contact for some of the most vulnerable in our community.

Applications are now open for Round 117, and close on 31 May, 2023. For more information visit www.justice.qld.gov.au/initiatives/ community-grants.

DIABETES ADVOCACY

15,000 Australian families have had the rug pulled out from underneath them after the Labor Government axed a life-changing medicine from the Pharmaceutical Benefits

Scheme (PBS) which is used to manage diabetes. Without any consultation or support for the patients impacted, the Government has cut the medication from the PBS and has sent the price soaring from as low as $7 to up to $280 per script.

Local student Freya (14), who I first met in 2016, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 11 months of age. Freya and her mum Jackie are just one of 15,000 families who will suffer from this cold-hearted decision.

Although I welcome the recent decision to extend Fiasp on the PBS for a further 6 months, this is just a band-aid solution. I will continue this campaign for a permanent solution beyond October on behalf of Freya and the 15,000 other Australians who rely on Fiasp.

THE BOOKWORM'S BIG DAY OUT

THE ANNUAL ROTARY NOOSA DAYBREAK BOOKFEST EVENT IS BACK FOR 2023

Basketball courts will be replaced with tables overflowing with books at Noosa Leisure Centre from April 28 to 30 as Rotary Noosa Daybreak puts on its biggest fundraiser of the year.

The annual Bookfest Noosa event is the culmination of a year’s worth of work by members who have been collecting and sorting secondhand book donations. There will be tens of thousands of books available for purchase over the three days and the proceeds will be dedicated to local projects including the homeless.

Noosa Daybreak president Ken Kipping said the majority of the money raised would go to the local area.

“This year we will focus on continuing our work with the homeless in the Noosa Shire and nearby surrounds," Ken said.

Previously funds raised from Bookfest have supported new treatments for suicidality, facilities for Noosa Coastguard, support for the local programs for the Salvation Army, research into treatments for Prostate Cancer. Local organisations supported by Bookfest

include Sunshine Butterflies, Hear and Say Centre, Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club, Childhood Cancer Support, Noosa Hospital, Sunshine Coast Rescue Helicopter, University of the Sunshine Coast, and a number of organisations providing support for youth in the Noosa region.

Support for flood relief has been a priority in recent years and significant contributions have been made to individuals and organisations affected by the floods in the Noosa Shire.

Mental health awareness and treatment has also been supported directly and in partnership with other Rotary Clubs and The University of the University of the Sunshine Coast Thompson Institute.

"I encourage all keen local readers and those that love their books to come along to Bookfest to buy from the huge range of books available on every conceivable topic,” Ken said.

“All books have been thoroughly sorted and only the best quality books will be offered for sale at $3 each. Childrens books will be sold at $1.”

The Noosa Leisure Centre is at Wallace Drive in Noosaville.

TAKE A TRIP TO THE MEN’S SHED

IF YOU NEED ANY EVIDENCE THAT YOU CAN IN FACT TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS YOU’LL FIND PLENTY OF EXAMPLES IN THE GREAT BIG SHED AT 26 RESEARCH STREET IN COOLUM BEACH.

The big shed is home to the Coolum Men’s Shed group. It houses a wide array of wood and metal working equipment and serves as a hub for gatherings of local men keen to socialise and share their skills and talents with others.

Driving the foundation of the Men’s Shed movement is a desire to promote the health and wellbeing of members by providing a safe and happy environment to gather and learn.

The group’s mission statement includes four key points that provide a solid indication of what it’s all about:

• Pursue hobbies, pastimes and interests,

• Learn new skills, practice and pass on old skills,

• Learn about their own health and other men’s health and well-being

• By their efforts, contribute to their families, their friends, the shed and their community, and mentor younger men.

The latest additions to the line-up of activities at the Men’s Shed include an Art Group, run by Nick Welling, and a Camera Club, hosted by Peter Oudyn.

The Art Group offers men the chance to try their hand at something creative, without having to be on the tools, and it works to the simply motto of “Come along and do your own Thing”.

The Camera Club offers the chance to boost your camera skills and share tips and tricks. It meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 12.30pm – with the main mission of having fun, including field trips.

New members are required to undertake a two-part induction to learn how to use all of the equipment properly and to understand the

Occupational Health and Safety requirements of the space and the rules required to be followed to stay safe.

This year’s committee is lead by president Frank Bates, Secretary David Redfern and Secretary Trevor Ryan.

The Men’s Shed holds regular fundraisers to cover material costs and also sells goods at markets and undertakes jobs in the community. It’s local business sponsors include Peter Andrew of Peter Andrew Real Estate, Brennan Carolan of Coolum Mitre 10, Christine Mertens of Coolum Charcoal Chicken, Ben Budd of Budd’s Butchers, Siobhan Grey of Bunnings Noosaville, Steve and Tina of The Produce Wholesaler, Shane Berger of Coolum Beach Hotel and Jacob Iverson and Isaac Duggan of Pro Computers.

During 2023, the Men’s Shed will also organise a sportsman’s lunch in June and a racing day at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club in October.

The Coolum Men’s Shed is open from 8.30am to 2.30pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday –with the Friday barbecue lunch for $5 per head plus $5 in raffle tickets always a hit.

For general enquiries phone 0418 298 221. For the Art Group call Nick Welling on 0414 729 890 and for the Camera Club phone Peter Oudyn on 0429 508 593.
