RECORD ANZAC DAY TURNOUT

COOLUM-PEREGIAN RSL SUB BRANCH HAS HAILED ANZAC DAY 2022 AS HAVING ATTRACTED THE BIGGEST CROWD EVER AT THE SERVICE.

With COVID restrictions lifted for the first time in years residents and veterans alike were able to come out, free of masks and check in requirements, to pay their respects to those who served at Gallipoli. Despite some rain, a crowd of nearly 3000 people all but filled the grassed area of the RSL, with members of the Army’s Bushmaster squad on hand, along with a vehicle, adding to the atmosphere of the event. Veterans and their families gathered early to march toward the Cenotaph at the RSL where messages of reflection, gratitude and support were shared. Local schools, including Coolum State High School, Coolum State School, Coolum Beach Christian College, Peregian Beach College, Peregian Springs State School and St Andrews Anglican College were represented by their students, with performances by local choirs too. A strong contingent of lifesavers from our local Coolum Beach Life Saving club were also in attendance. 4

COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

ENVIRONMENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT ANZAC DAY

IT was wonderful to see many local schools and community groups commemorate ANZAC Day at the Coolum-Peregian RSL Dawn Service recently. Inspirational stories from veterans and understanding and hope from our youth were shared. Thank you all for your participation. WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Save the date Sunday June 5 – for Coastal WED Fest at Jack Morgan Park. Hosted by council, this event is part of World Environment Day month-long program. I’m so excited to have the event in Coolum. Another local WED event is the Doonan Planting Festival. Help plant 1000 food trees for glossy black cockatoos, flying foxes and other wildlife at the free family friendly event on Sunday 26 June from 8am to 11am. There’s tree planting, wildlife displays, live music and free food. Registrations are essential. Book now at http://tiny.cc/1000treesdoonan

Please don’t use your new garden organics bin until Monday July 11 - as it won’t be collected before then. If you’re unsure, search ‘bin day’ on Council’s website to find your collection day. And please remember to put you bins out before 6am. PLANNED BURNS START

Council’s annual planned burn season has begun with 13 burns scheduled across the coast including south of Peregian Springs if conditions are suitable. Planned burns help plant species that rely on fire to regenerate and also reduce fuel on the ground before bushfire season. Keep up to date with our burn schedule via council’s Facebook page and council’s website. SOCIAL PAGES RESOURCE

PLANNING SCHEME UPDATE

Many residents and groups have made well-considered submissions about the new Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme and I look forward to hearing the summary of feedback that will go into the preparation of a draft plan. GREEN BIN UPDATE

For residents who don’t have one, your new garden organics bin will be delivered in May and June 2022, ready for the service to start from Monday July 11. Garden organics bins are collected on the same day as your general waste bin and on the alternate week to your recycling bin.

TAKE THE TIME TO FIND A RHYME DID YOU HEAR THE RHYME ABOUT CHILDREN HAVING A GOOD TIME, BEING KEPT ON THE HOOK BY A LIBRARIAN READING A BOOK?

Well, if you have youngsters and you have not yet taken advantage of the Sunshine Coast Council Library Storytime and Rhymetime sessions, you’re missing out. Each week, Council’s team offer free early literacy sessions across their libraries, encouraging a love of language through reading and singing. Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said council’s libraries were a great place for families to visit and the Storytime and Rhymetime sessions were ideal for enthusiastic young learners. “Storytime sessions for children aged two to five are the perfect activity for parents and caregivers to give their children the best start in life, and they’re also great fun,” Cr Law said. “Storytime sessions include stories, rhymes and songs to encourage language and listening skills, promote attention and curiosity.” The Rhymetime sessions are designed for ages six months to two years and aim to help babies develop pre-literacy and language skills. To secure a spot at Storytime and Rhymetime be sure to register online by visiting the library website library. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Coolum Library Storytime sessions are held on Thursdays from 9.30am to 10.30am. It’s

Rhymetime sessions are Wednesdays, 9.30am to 10am. It is worth noting that the sessions do not run on public holidays or during school holidays. The good news for library regulars is that they are no longer required to check-in at the front for COVID tracing, however masks are still encouraged if social distancing is not possible. Sunshine Coast Libraries also offer a range of online early literacy sessions and resources to aid your child’s development during those vital first five years, where 90 per cent of brain development occurs. To stay up-to-date on library news, subscribe to the library eNewsletter and follow Sunshine Coast Libraries on Facebook. And, by way of confirmation, the Coolum Library does in fact open at 9am Monday to Saturday (not 9.30am as accidentally reported here last month). Closing hours, as listed on library. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for Coolum are 5.30pm on Monday, 6pm on Tuesday, 5.30pm for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 3pm on Saturdays.

Quota Club Coolum Beach recently donated $2000 to OzHarvest Sunshine Coast. Michelle Lipner from OzHarvest said the money was used to buy food for the flood victims in Gympie and the Sunshine Coast. OzHarvest collects good quality food from commercial outlets on the coast and donates it to charities to distribute to people in need. This saves tonnes of food going to landfill each year. STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

SMALL BUSINESS MONTH IS HERE GREAT TURNOUT FOR ANZAC DAY

Anzac Day looked a little different this year, as we were able to join together as a community again to commemorate this special day. Despite the wet conditions, it was an honour to join with record numbers of locals at the Dawn Service at the Coolum Peregian RSL. I was fortunate to also be able to attend services at our local schools including Coolum State High School, as well as in other parts of the electorate, including Eumundi and Bli Bli. More than 100 years have passed since that ill-fated battle on the shores of Gallipoli, but the memory of the sacrifice, the honour, the bravery and the courage that defines the Anzac spirit shines just as brightly today. Lest We Forget. SMALL BUSINESS – THE BACKBONE OF OUR ECONOMY

May is Small Business month, and there’s no better time to be showcasing the diversity of small and family owned businesses that are operating in our backyard. Recently, I launched a new campaign to help put the spotlight on some of these businesses. The centrepiece of the ‘Supporting Local’ campaign is a hamper stocked entirely with locally made goods (see picture), including: • Environmentally friendly cleaning products from The Pleasant State and Go for Zero • Handmade soap and bath bombs from The Soap Bar • Selection of teas and spices from Planet Organic • Popcorn from Sweet Az Popcorn • Longlife meat alternatives from Veff by Fenn Foods • Pasta, couscous and risotto mixes from Belladotti • Coffee from Flying West Roasters • Craft beer from Eumundi Brewery These hampers are being donated to local 12

charities and groups to help them with their fundraising efforts, including the Coolum Women’s Shed, Coolum Business and Tourism, Coolum Kindy, Coolum Peregian RSL and Coolum Hearts. If you know a local not-for-profit that could benefit from one of these proudly local hampers, get in touch! GAMBLING GRANT SUPER ROUND

If you are part of a community club or group that has been impacted by a natural disaster in the past two years, you are encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $100,000 in the Gambling Community Benefit Fund’s supersized Disaster Recovery Round. This round opens on 16 May, and closes on 15 July. Applications from non-affected groups are still welcome in this round, with grants capped at $35,000. FIGHTING FOXES FOR WILDLIFE COUNCILS AND LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION GROUPS WILL JOIN FORCES IN THE NEXT MONTH IN AN ATTEMPT TO CONTROL LOCAL FOX NUMBERS.

In a bid to protect native wildlife from predatory foxes, Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Coolum and Northshore Coast Care and Noosa Council will work together to monitor coastal bushland areas from Mudjimba to Peregian Springs. The latest control program launched on April 20 and will continued until May 27. Sunshine Coast Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said the program played an important part in protecting our endangered and threatened species and had delivered very positive results since the program started in 2015. “Areas included in the control program will be clearly identified, with warning signs at all entrances,” Cr Suarez said. “Please ensure your pets do not roam into bushland area during this period. “We appreciate the support the community continues to give this program as we hope to reduce the impacts these introduced predators have on our native coastal wildlife species. “A fox can have a huge impact on turtle hatchlings.

“Foxes dig up turtle nests and harass female turtles that come up to lay, leading to poor reproductive rates of the already endangered green and loggerhead turtles that nest on Sunshine Coast beaches.” The program is designed to impact fox populations at a time when they were particularly active and reduce fox predation on vulnerable populations of native species, such as water mice, Eastern ground parrots, and endangered green and loggerhead turtles at the egg and hatchling stage. The European red fox is a restricted invasive species under the Queensland Government Biosecurity Act 2014. Under the Biosecurity Act 2014, all landowners have a General Biosecurity Obligation (GBO) to manage biosecurity matter and invasive species on their property. If you spot a suspected fox den in the program area, report it to council on 5475 7272.
