New markets are planned for Jack Morgan Park in Coolum on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, starting in November.

PARK TO HOST MARKETS LOCAL GROUPS, COOLUM BUSINESS AND TOURISM AND VISIT COOLUM, HAVE BEEN BUSY PUTTING THE FINAL TOUCHES ON A NEW PLAN TO ACTIVATE COOLUM’S COASTAL STRIP.

In a release on their social pages on October 15, CBT, announced a competition to name the markets with something catchy that captures the “laid-back, beachy, surf & skate” culture of the area. Up for grabs in their competition is a $200 worth of Sunny Coast Cash to be spent in 4573 postcode. Entry Coolum News - November 2021

is via their facebook page @ coolum or by emailing events@ coolumbusinessandtourism. com.au. In other good news for market lovers out there, Coolum Lions have had approval to run the popular Christmas twilight markets again at Tickle Park on Friday nights, starting November 17. The Lions took over the duties of running the event from the Coolum Lionesses which closed in June this year. FROM THE ED’S DESK THERE’S NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, CHRISTMAS IS ON THE WAY.

The call has gone out for stallholders to come forward for the annual Friday night twilight markets at Tickle Park, the work has started on finalising dates for Flicks in the Park events and the hard working teams at Coolum Business and Tourism and Visit Coolum are throwing as much energy as possible into helping to showcase all that Coolum has to offer to locals and tourists alike. While there’s certainly still some trepidation out there in the community about what it’s going to mean to have Queensland’s borders open to everyone again, as vaccination targets are hit, there’s also a strong desire from many to be able to catch up with the

family and friends from interstate who have been out of reach for nearly two years. The combination of where we are on the COVID journey and pent up demand for escaping the four walls of lockdowns is going to make for an interesting holiday period that’s for sure. For those in the community who have been involved in the Coolum HeARTs the names of Clive and Barbara Holden will surely ring a bell. This month, the dynamic duo announced they would be stepping back from the day to day running of the organisation with strong committee in place to continue the work they started. After nearly nine years building the community group, they certainly deserve a bit of a break. Congrats also to Clive whose entry in this year’s Doug Moran National Portrait Prize has been named a semi-finalist (see page 20). I hope you enjoy this month’s edition, Geoff

STORMWATER WORKS START THE REPLACEMENT OF THE STORMWATER CULVERT AT CINNAMON AVENUE IN COOLUM HAS STARTED.

Workers moved on site from October 25 to start a project that will continue until March 2022. From October 25 to November 5 signage and traffic control measures will be in place at the site which is on Cinnamon Avenue, between Spindrift Ave and Fourwinds Avenue. From November 8 to March 11, 2022, weather permitting, there will be a temporary road closure, although the aim is to be able to open the road up temporarily during the Christmas and New Year period. Detours will be set up where Cinnamon Avenue intersects with Fourwinds and Spindrift Avenues with Council promising

to alert residents well in advance of road closures and changed traffic conditions. Division 9 Councillor Maria Suarez said she realised the challenges this work may cause. “I acknowledge this will be inconvenient, however these works are essential,” she said.

BIOSPHERE STATUS CONSIDERED SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL’S NOMINATION FOR THE REGION TO BECOME A UNESCO BIOSPHERE HAS REACHED ITS FINAL DESTINATION.

After having been considered by the Queensland and Australian governments, the nomination has now arrived in Paris for UNESCO’s consideration. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said all of council’s regional strategies, planning and programs supported our bid for the region to become a biosphere. “Our community has given us a consistent message – protect and maintain our region’s liveability and natural assets while ensuring there are sustainable opportunities for our future,” Mr Jamieson said. “A biosphere credential will help us continue doing that.

“I made commitments to the residents of our Sunshine Coast in both 2016 and 2020 that I would work with my colleagues to advance a Biosphere nomination for our region to UNESCO so I am delighted that this final point in the journey has been reached. “The nomination highlights the priority we place on ensuring the economic, social and environmental needs of our region today are advanced, without compromising the ability to meet the needs of our future generations. “A biosphere is a natural fit for the Sunshine Coast, as its values encompass those of our community, and our council’s vision: Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.” In terms of the timing of a decision on whether or not Biosphere status is granted, that is not expected until June 2022.

WHAT’S ON WITH JULIA LOANEY

STEP OUT WITH LADIES IN BLACK IN LATE NOVEMBER, EARLY DECEMBER THE COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE WILL TAKE ON THE LOOK AND FEEL OF AN OLD SCHOOL DEPARTMENT STORE FOR THE LATEST SHOW BY COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS.

Set in Sydney in the 1950s, this musical tells the story of bookish school leaver Lisa (Sienna McRitchie, newcomer to CTP) who joins the sales staff of a fashionable Sydney department store, F.G. Goode’s. Over a summer that changes her life, she befriends the colourful denizens of the women’s clothing department. As she anxiously awaits her final results, Lisa must overcome her father’s (Greg McMahon) reluctance to allow her to follow her dreams of going to university instead of becoming a simple secretary until she finds a proper husband. Lisa’s mother (Christine Mai) is a good 1950s wife who supports her husband in all things. Up to a point! This is a wonderful musical by Carolyn Burns with music by Tim Finn, directed by Linda Gefken (We Will Rock You, Spamalot, The Addams Family and Sweet Charity, to name a few). Linda was a real fan of Split Enz in the early days, Tim Finn in particular, and is thrilled that he has expanded his talents to include writing the music for this delightful musical. Fans will recognise some elements of early Split Enz music, as well as plenty of 1950s styles. The music is lyrical and melodic and audiences will be singing the tunes from the show for days afterward. Costuming for this production is a real challenge, and now that we have the fabulous Michelle Peloe on board as costumier, our dresses and suits are a real treat: some vintage pieces and some magnificent re-creations. 6

“Historically attracting retirees, Coolum Beach is now a hotspot for young families and investors” - Peter Andrew The best time to sell is when the market is on the rise, as you will always attract more buyers and create more competition. The Sunshine Coast continues to be a hot spot nationally and is positioned to attract many more buyers from Brisbane and interstate in the future. Coolum has proven to be popular with buyers wanting to position themselves in this idyllic location with its proximity to the beach schools, and amenities. Having lived and worked in Coolum for well over 30 years I personally feel that this area has been undervalued and this location is only starting to catch up with the beaches further north and the developing infrastructure to the south of us. Realestate.com.au data reveals a Coolum Beach listing gets 1480 visits on average almost double the Queensland average of 815 visits.

For more information and to get a property appraisal please visit www.peterandrewrealestate.com

Why choose Peter Andrew Real Estate to sell your property? Peter understands how important the decision to sell your property is. Peter knows that it matters that the best sale price is achieved, good communication is imperative, and the selling experience is memorable. Peter will leverage his 40 years’ experience of living and being in business in Coolum Beach to deliver what matters.

YOUNG DANCERS SET TO SHINE

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY LOCAL KIDS ARE ABOUT TO TAKE TO THE STAGE FOR THE INAUGURAL STUDIO 4 DANCE END OF YEAR CONCERT AT MAJESTIC THEATRE IN NAMBOUR.

Launched at the start of this year, Studio 4 Dance has gathered a strong following among local dancers and their parents, now offering classes most nights across a range of genres for dancers aged from just three years old, to adult. Studio 4 Dance owner Karla Costanzo said the end of year concert was a chance for the dancers to celebrate all they had learned and it will showcase various genres including musical theatre, hip hop, jazz, ballet, tap, lyrical and contemporary. “I can’t quite believe what we’ve achieved in such a short time,” Karla said. “Our studio is thriving and the kids just love coming to classes and holiday workshops,” she said. “We’ve created an inclusive culture where kids of all experience levels feel welcome and 14

enjoy a no pressure environment. “We’re so happy to give them the opportunity to perform on stage and put on a big show!” Studio 4 Dance students will be supported by DanceLab Company who will open the concert with a performance from their recent film production curated for the MindMe exhibition Director of DanceLab, Michelle Bucci, also runs the Dance Extension Program at Peregian Beach College. These Dance Extension students participate in classes during the school day at PBC and Studio 4 Dance operates in the same studio after school hours. Karla and Michelle are excited to collaborate and showcase the depth of talent and passion for dance in our local community. The concert will take place on Sunday 28th November with two morning shows, tickets will be available for purchase via www.trybooking.com.au. STATE NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

ROADS, GRANTS AND COVID

GAMBLING GRANT SUCCESS

Congratulations to our latest Gambling Community Benefit Fund recipients, including the Coolum Peregian Swimming Club ($30,009.50), Coolum Beach Meals on Wheels ($19,120), Coolum Hearts ($15,000), and Coolum Touch ($35,000). Big changes are coming to the grants program from next year, with the grants being offered in four rounds. Three of these rounds will offer funding up to $35,000, and one super round offering up to $100,000. The super round closes at the end of February, and is expected to open in midJanuary, so keep an eye out for more details. ROADWORKS UPDATE

Resurfacing works are due to start on a section of Emu Mountain Road. The resurfacing, which will involve minor earthworks, pavement repairs, asphalt overlay works and linemarking will be done on approximately 7kms of the road between the Peregian Springs Drive (south) and Murdering Creek Road roundabouts. The roundabouts themselves will not be included, as they already have a surface layer of asphalt. To minimize inconvenience to motorists, the works will be carried out at night, from Sunday to Thursday, between 6pm and 5am, and are expected to take approximately 4 weeks to complete. Thank you in advance for your patience 16

during these works, and don’t forget to drive to the conditions. Works were also recently completed on the installation of a new closed-circuit tv camera and modifications to the traffic signals on Yandina Coolum Road, at the intersection of Yungar Street and Central Avenue. This was part of the jointly funded Road Safety Program, which saw the CCTV systems installed at a number of locations around the coast. COVID ROADMAP

For months now, Queenslanders have been crying out for a roadmap out of COVID lockdowns and restrictions. I think it’s fair to say we’ve become more sick of the politics than from COVID itself, so it’s great to see a plan for the path forward. Unfortunately, the crippling effect of mixed messaging and ad hoc lockdowns on small and family businesses, particularly in the tourism industry, has taken a massive toll Statistics from Tourism Research Australia reveal the cost to the Queensland tourism industry is almost $20 billion. The same research also found that around 10,000 Queensland tourism businesses won’t survive. I applaud our local chamber, Coolum Business and Tourism, who has been doing the heavy lifting, launching local activation programs to support local businesses. Without their help, many may not survived. As we all continue to play our part and get vaccinated, in the lead up to Christmas I urge you to show your support and shop locally, and help keep our local businesses open. STAY IN TOUCH

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS: MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

PROUD DAY FOR LIFESAVERS

SURF LIFESAVING

I met with three Sunshine Coast heroes this month who were awarded the Surf Life Saving Queensland, Excellence in Surf Lifesaving Award for a daring rescue they performed in 2020. Mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club members Caleb Teague, Ryce Connerty and Rob O’Neil (pictured above) saved the lives of a family of five in October last year when they bravely pulled them from the water. I was delighted to personally congratulate these heroes at the Mudjimba SLSC and acknowledge the importance of their work. While I was at the club, I also inspected their recent refurbishments which were supported by a $13,255 Federal Government Grant. This was a timely reminder of the importance of our local Surf Life Saving Clubs and the life and death role they played by surf lifesavers. STRONGER COMMUNITIES

Grants from $2,500 to $20,000 are available for small capital projects (e.g. purchase of equipment, upgrades to facilities, etc) that improve local community participation and contribute to vibrant viable communities on the Sunshine Coast. This is a great example of how the Australian Government is backing our local not-for-profit community groups 18

through direct financial support. Expressions of interest are now open for all eligible organisations, so please head to my website for more information and eligibility criteria www.tedobrien.com.au. SPRING ROAD TRIP

My team and I will be out and about across the electorate from Monday the 1st of November to Thursday the 4th of November as part of my Spring road trip. This is a fantastic opportunity for me to hear from you directly about Federal Government issues that are important to you and your town. Head to my website for times and locations. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

Great news from the Prime Minister this month that parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents can now travel back home to Australia and international travel is also set to resume in November. GET IN TOUCH

As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any Federal issues., concerns or inquiries on 5479 2800; via email at ted.obrien.mp@ aph.gov.au or in person at 17 Southern Drive, Maroochydore. coolumnews.com.au

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

ARE YOU COPING WITH STRESS? THIS TIME OF YEAR IS ALWAYS FULL OF ACTIVITY. STUDENTS IN GRADE 12 ARE STARTING THEIR QCAA EXAMS, ALL OTHER YEAR LEVELS ARE FACING FINAL ASSESSMENTS AND FOR MANY OF US ADULTS, THIS IS THE BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR.

Stress (abnormal pressure) levels in schools and the community spike significantly in these months leading up to Christmas. Stress wreaks havoc on your emotional equilibrium and physical health so here are some tips that might help. Don’t over fill your cup! Last week I attended a seminar by psychologist, Dr Robi Sonderegger. He said, stress is like water being poured into a cup. The cup (you) has a certain amount of water it can hold. Once the limit is reached, water flows over creating a mess. When we are overloaded with stress our emotions and life can spiral out of control. If we are feeling stressed then we have to reflect on what we are putting into the cup and if it’s too much, consider how can we reduce the flow. Work slower to work faster! When we were under the pump, my old landscaping boss would say, “less haste, more speed”. He knew that working faster often caused mistakes and we were more effective when we slowed down. Take a break in your study or work. Pause for a few minutes to get

it right and guard against rushing. Slowing down might actually cause you to be more effective. Breathe! When stress levels are rising and emotions bubbling up, pause and take a deep breath in for 3 and out for 3. I say “relax” to myself, as I’m breathing. You will be surprised at how it helps to clear your mind and ground you. Sleep! Getting enough sleep is critical in keeping well, maintaining healthy brain functioning and being effective in daily activities. School students should sleep 9-12 hours and adults 7-9 hours a night. Research shows that good sleep plays a huge role in reducing stress and improving mood. Do something you enjoy! It is easy to get caught up in just working or ticking off the to do list. Allow time in the busy-ness to do something you enjoy, even if it is only for 30 minutes. Your productivity will increase and you will be in a better mind space. So good luck managing your stress levels over the coming months. * Mark Horsfall is the Chaplain at Coolum State High School

MUSICAL WORK IN SEMI-FINALS Talented local artist Clive Holden, of Coolum HeARTs fame, has had his portrait of Andrew Veivers (pictured right) named as a semifinalist in the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. He is among 151 semi-finalists named in this year’s awards, 20

with finalists to be chosen on November 1 and the final winner announced on November 30. The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize is worth $150,000 to its winner, making it the richest art prize in Australia. Good luck Clive! coolumnews.com.au
