Whether its drones, trucks, boards or boats, Surf Life Saving Queensland is ready to do its part in watching our beaches this Summer.

READY TO SAVE LIVES SCHOOL HOLIDAYS MARKED THE START OF THE 2021 / 2022 VOLUNTEER SURF LIFE SAVING PATROL SEASON.

This year Sunshine Coast Regional Council contributed $5.7million to lifeguard services across the Coast’s beaches including the funding of yearround lifeguards at Kings Beach, Dicky Beach, Mooloolaba Main Beach and Spit, Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore, Twin Waters, Mudjimba, Discovery Beach and Coolum. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Coolum News - October 2021

Mark Jamieson said the money was an important contribution to beach safety. “In January alone more than 1.2 million people visited our Sunshine Coast beaches and lifeguards performed 143 rescues and 770 first-aid actions,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Our beaches are one of the most popular areas in our region, which reinforces why it is crucial we support the invaluable servies provided by our lifeguards and lifesavers through the season.” The volunteer patrol season runs until May 2022.

FROM THE ED’S DESK HOW GREAT IS IT TO SEE A SEA OF PINK SHIRTS BACK ON THE BEACH AS THE YOUNGEST OF OUR VOLUNTEER LIFE SAVERS HIT THE BEACH TO MASTER THE SKILLS OF SAVING LIVES?

With the weather warming up, Nippers back on the beach and the area buzzing with the hum of local tourists, Spring has got off to a good start. In this month’s edition we read about native bird survey (page 3) designed to provide valuable data to the nation’s chief bird loving group, Birdlife Australia, and it only takes 20 minutes of our time. While the Barns Lane Farm development application continues to filter through the

approvals process, the team behind the venture have got on the front foot and are calling for Expressions of Interest from those who may want to operate their businesses there (page 6). There’s a buzz in the air for our local performers too with a concert coming up by the Waves of Harmony choir and the good folk at Coolum Theatre Players deep into rehearsals for their next show which will hit the stage at the end of November (page 8). If you have an interest in helping out a great local not-for-profit, can commit to monthly meetings, and have an understanding of the governance side of a charity then Coolum HeARTS would love to hear from you for their committee (page 10). I hope the month has been kind to everyone and that you enjoy this month’s read. Geoff

COUNT THE BIRDS FOR A GOOD CAUSE BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA IS CALLING ON THE NEXT GENERATION OF BIRD LOVERS AND THEIR PARENTS TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS YEAR’S AUSSIE BACKYARD BIRD COUNT.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count, from October 18 to 24, aims to engage school communities in the natural world while getting to know the birds in their local area, through participation in a simple, fun, activity that can be done anywhere. BirdLife Australia’s Sean Dooley said the event encouraged school children to spend 20 minutes in their favourite outdoor space recording the birds they see and reporting on them.

Mr Dooley said the annual count provided an opportunity to gain a more detailed picture of what birds are living where and how our native birds are faring. Last year 4.6million birds were counted in seven days. The good news for those interested in the project is that there are also more than $5,000 worth of prizes being given away as part of this year’s count. FOCUS ON PLANNING SCHEME RESIDENTS FROM ACROSS THE SUNSHINE COAST HAVE JOINED FORCES TO BE PART OF NEW COMMUNITY REFERENCE GROUP CHARGED WITH SHARING ITS OPINIONS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGION’S NEXT PLANNING SCHEME.

The members of the new reference group were chosen to provide a broad representation, from a range of areas of interest, gender, age groups, communities and locations across our region. They include: • Karen Neuendorf (Chair) • Robert Elliot • Louise Formosa • Carl Nancarrow • Stephen Burton • Melva Hobson • Trevor Rice • Narelle McCarthy • Gunter Nolle • Abbey Lindley Put simply, a planning scheme is a set of planning principles prepared by council to guide what can be built and where. It is about making sure the right development happens in the right locations. The CRG will provide input on the best ways to engage with the community on matters such as managing future growth and development as part of the new planning scheme project. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said the diversity of skills and expertise of the members would provide valuable input to engaging with the wider community about the development of the new planning scheme. “Council thanks everyone who showed an interest in the future of our region by nominating for the CRG,” Mayor Jamieson said. 4

“The project is in the early stages, and I look forward to the diverse mix of skills, knowledge, and experience the CRG will bring to the project. “The CRG’s first task will be to assist with preparing for preliminary community consultation, which will be held later this financial year. “Council will keep the community informed as engagement ideas are further developed.” New Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme Project Community Reference Group Chair Karen Neuendorf said she was delighted to be selected to chair the group. “I’m thrilled to see such a broad group of people of all ages and from all walks of life coming together, to play a part in helping develop a new planning scheme,” Mrs Neuendorf said. “It’s so important to me that we hear from all the voices that make up our growing community and to do so using new and innovative ways. Under the Planning Act 2016, all local governments are required to review their planning schemes within 10 years of them taking effect and decide, based on that review, whether to amend or replace the planning scheme. Council’s Group Executive Customer Engagement and Planning Services James Ruprai said that in partnership with the community, council will spend the next few years developing a new planning scheme to shape future land use and development across the region. “The community will have the opportunity to have their say during preliminary consultation later this year or early next year,” he said. The new planning scheme is intended to be in place by 2024. For more on the CRG, the process for preparing a new planning scheme or to receive updates, see the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme Project website. coolumnews.com.au

ROLL UP THE FUR AND DONATE WHEN IT COMES TO DONATING BLOOD THE HUMANS IN MANY FAMILIES WILL HAVE ROLLED UP THEIR SLEEVE AT SOME TIME TO HELP OUT - NOW THERE’S A CALL FOR OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME FOR THEIR MATES.

North Coast Veterinary Specialist and Referral Centre is urging Sunshine Coast pet owners to consider having their cats or dogs donate blood to assist in the treatment of animals requiring urgent blood transfusions due to injury or medical conditions. Dr Naomi Hansen said the process of donating a pet’s blood was very similar to humans giving blood. “We sedate the pets...and then we get what’s considered to be a unit of blood from our patient. Then we can keep this unit in the fridge for 28 days,” Dr Hansen said. “It’s not something that people would think we’re able to to do, but we do it quite easily and we do it quite a lot.” To be eligible to donate at the Sippy Downs

based surgery dogs must be aged between 1 and 7 years and weigh over 25kg. They must also be up to date with all vaccinations and worming and not be on medications. Indoor cats aged 1 to 7 years of a lean weight, and up to date on their vaccinations, worming and without heartworm or mycoplasma are also eligible. To find out more see www.ncvs.net.au/ donate-blood or phone 5453 7555.

COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

ROADWORK TO IMPROVE TRAVEL ROAD UPGRADES

Do you travel along Verrierdale Road, Verrierdale, at any stage during your day? Please be aware that reconstruction of a 900m section of the road has begun and will take around eight weeks, weather permitting. It’s quite a significant amount of work as Council will be completely removing and replacing the road base and so will need to close the road with redirections in place. The existing road and base will be removed one lane at a time. The subgrade will then be strengthened by lime stabilisation with the placement of a cement fortified gravel to follow. Once this lane has been completed to a bitumen seal standard, works will start on the opposite lane. The project team is keen to complete these works in a timely manner and do their best to work with the community during construction. I understand that there will be some inconvenience for residents and businesses, but this upgrade really needs to be done and I thank you for your patience. If you’re able to, I’d recommend using

Eumundi-Noosa Road and Emu Mountain Road while the work takes place. COMMUNITY FACILITY CHAT

Please keep an eye on my Facebook page for information on the upcoming Peregian Springs Community Facility consultation. I anticipate that there will be an opportunity for the community to discuss the facility requirements with council before the end of the year. I’ll keep you updated. STAY IN TOUCH

If you have issues or suggestions to discuss, please contact me on 5475 9810 or maria. suarez@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or come along to one of my community chats on the second Wednesday of each month. Please keep an eye on my Facebook page for details. Cheers, Cr. Maria Suarez Division 9 – Sunshine Coast Council

STATE NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

ASSISTED DYING LAWS PASSED VAD LEGISLATIN PASSES PARLIAMENT

COVID UPDATE

Earlier this month, legislation to legalise voluntary assisted dying was passed in State Parliament. While I respect the outcome and recognise the community’s support for the concept of VAD, I don’t believe the legislation in its current form gives people a legitimate choice. Knowing that the Government had the numbers to pass the legislation, I took the opportunity to advocate for more palliative care funding, which was the biggest concern raised by my electorate, as well as for greater protections against coercion and conscientious objections, which were amendments flagged by the Premier, but dismissed by Cabinet. As I articulated in my speech, I was not voting against VAD, but I believe the legislation could have been strengthened. One of our key roles as parliamentarians is ensuring the legislation we pass is the best it can be, and while I’m not disappointed in the outcome, I don’t believe the legislation and the current lack of palliative care services across my electorate and the state offers people a real choice. If you are interested in reading a copy of my speech, contact me on 5406 7900 or email ninderry@parliament.qld.gov.au

Every day I’m being contacted by Queenslanders trapped across the border who desperately trying to return home, along with small and family run businesses who are crying out for help and support during these challenging times. During times of crises, businesses need confidence and certainty, however at the moment, the path forward is far from clear. In the past month I’ve spoken a number of times in Parliament about the need for not only more targeted financial support for businesses, but also more compassion and a common sense approach to border restrictions and exemptions for returning residents. Decisions need to be based on health advice, and Queenslanders deserve to know what that health advice is. One thing we do know for certain is that vaccinations are our ticket to restoring our freedoms, so if you haven’t already done so, I encourage you and your family to get vaccinated as soon as you can. Speak to your family GP about which vaccination is best for you, and head to www. qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/ coronavirus-covid-19/protect-yourself-others/ covid-19-vaccine to book.

UPCOMING ROAD WORKS

CCTV cameras have just been installed at the intersection of Yandina Coolum Road, Yungar Street and Central Avenue. These cameras are to designed to help monitor the traffic flow at this busy intersection and the adjacent pedestrian refuge near Coolum State School. Hopefully this will assist with congestion while planning works for the upgrade to the intersection with School Road and the interchange with the Motorway are underway. 16

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS: MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

SHOWING STRENGTH TOGETHER SECURITY PARTNERSHIP

Australia’s new security partnership with the United States and the United Kingdom, dubbed AUKUS, is the single most important addition to our security architecture in a generation. It sends a powerful message to the world that we like-minded liberal democracies will work together to deliver stability to the Indo-Pacific. The first initiative of this enhanced partnership will be to support Australia to acquire a conventionally armed nuclearpowered submarine capability. Considering my well-known support for nuclear powered submarines, you can imagine how pleased I am with this news. However, to be clear, these subs will be nuclear-powered, not nuclear armed and this does not mean that we are soon to introduce nuclear energy. These are very different propositions. What this is about, is keeping Australians safe which we will continue to prioritise.

for all eligible Australians aged over 16 years. The National rollout was also given another major injection following a deal between Australia and the UK in which an extra 4 million Pfizer doses will be made available. PARALYMPIC SUCCESS

Congratulations to our team of powerhouse Sunshine Coast Paralympians who have returned home from Tokyo with 13 of Australia’s 66 medals: that is nearly 20 percent of Australia’s total medal count. While the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games have officially come to an end, our athletes’ efforts will continue to inspire future generations of aspiring Olympians and Paralympians for years to come. This is more important now than ever before, as we prepare for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

COVID-19 UPDATE

The COVID-19 vaccination rollout has reached another major milestone with 70% of all Australians over the age of 16 inoculated with their first dose. This brings Australia one step closer to our first objective of 70% double-dose vaccination

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

TIPS FOR TALKING WITH TEENS I WAS CAMPING ON THE WEEKEND AND WAS TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH MY 14-YEAROLD NIECE.

I would have had more luck getting a tree to talk to me that night. Talking to teenagers is a common challenge many of us parents can share. Adolescence can be a perplexing, challenging, confusing and emotional time of life. It is a time where they develop their independence, develop who they are and figure out where they fit in the world. All of this can make having conversations with them very challenging. Here are a few tips that may help you have better conversations: Bridge the Gap – Teenagers often feel misunderstood and think that their parents have no idea what it’s like to be a teenager. Try putting your opinions, feelings and views to the side and help them discover their values and beliefs. Avoid telling them how you think they should think and feel. Your teenager probably won’t be looking for you to fix or solve problems. Instead help them move towards finding a resolution themselves. Validated your teenager – Can you remember what it was like to be one? If you can, it will help you relate better, understand and see things from their perspective. If they feel like they have been heard and

validated, then they will be more likely to open up more. Acknowledging their feelings and needs can go a long way to establishing connection with them. Choose your time – When your teenager is displaying lots of emotion then that is not going to be a productive time to try and have a rational conversation. Try to avoid bringing up an important conversation when they’re about to walk out the door or are watching their favourite show. It might be helpful to even set a time that all parties agree on (like an appointment) when important conversations need to be had. Ask open ended questions – Asking the right questions is an art and takes practice. Some good questions to ask are: • How did that make you feel? • What are your thoughts about this? • What do you think is the best thing to do? • What can I do to help? Try to stay away from yes and no answer questions. Always remember if you struggle, you’re not alone. They will grow out of it and with some work and effort, you can get them to talk. Good Luck! * Mark Horsfall is the Chaplain at Coolum State High School
