THE LONG-AWAITED HALF COURT BASKETBALL COURT AT LIONS AND NORRIE JOB PARK IS READY FOR PLAY.

The new court includes a basketball hoop, hopscotch and handball markings. Work on the project started in July. The basketball court is one of a range of projects on the boil for Coolum at the moment including the extension of the Coastal Path, a new pathway at Jones Parade, the Shade Sail at Tickle Park, and new amenities for Jack Morgan Park. The 260m long by 1.8m stretch of new concrete pathway on Jones Parade, from Central Avenue to School Road, is expected to be complete by the end of September. The new amenities for Jack Morgan Park are expected to take on a similar style to other amenity blocks in the region. Weather permitting, the new amenities are expected to be completed and open to the public by October.

A need for more informal sports and games facilities such as basketball half-courts, multicourts and netball courts in the Coolum area was identified as part of community engagement surveys coordinated by Sunshine Coast Regional Council between February and March this year.

HOOP TIME AT COOLUM

Half court action is about to begin on the Coolum foreshore.

Executive - Assistance, Glenn Toms, said the Club congratulated the Queensland Government on the vital road safety rule. “We have been advocating for this change since 2017, with 90 percent of our members in favour of making this lifesaving road rule a reality, so we are incredibly pleased the Government is taking action,” Mr Toms said.

SPORTING CHAMPIONS

As the Surf Lifesaving season gets underway, I want to acknowledge how important the Coolum Beach Surf Lifesaving Club is to our community and the safety it provides for all beach goers. This club gives so much and that’s why I was pleased to see them receive help with a $9,345 Federal Government grant towards their new retractable shade sail which will provide some welcome relief for Clubbies enjoying the member’s terrace.

Congratulations to 37 young sportspeople who have received grants of between $500 and $750 to help towards the cost of travelling to state, national or international championships, including: Lily Bradford of Mount Coolum – Australian Surf Life Saving Championships Jarvis Miller of Mount Coolum –National Canoe Sprint Championships

I am inviting local not-for-profit groups to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) for grants to support the work of our valued volunteers. Last year, several Coolum clubs benefitted from grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 to provide fuel vouchers for Coolum Beach Meals on Wheels; training and equipment for Coolum District Netball Association; storage cabinets and fuel vouchers for Coolum HeARTS; a ride on mower for Coolum Beach Lions Club; equipment and a laptop for Coastal Community Native Nursery and two new laptops and a printer for Coolum Quota Club. Severe erosion uncovered parts of the stairs buried for a long time at beach access 77. The stairs need major structural repairs. After careful review it was decided it would be more cost effective to rebuild the stairs with a new aluminium and timber set. This will provide longevity while keeping the look of the natural timber stairs currently in place.Work is expected to begin late October. To ensure the large dune next to the stairs has a chance to rehabilitate, we are asking people to use alternative authorised access points.

Industrial estate is home to the Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club which is well loved by people who love to ride. Noise complaints have been regularly received for the past 7 years. Council is acting in the best interest of all parties by allowing continued, but regulated, use of the site and giving residents some respite from the noise. As the club is located on Queensland Government land, zoned industrial, it has tenure directly with Economic Development Queensland (EDQ). Council has and continues to work with the club to resolve this mattercompliancetoattempt to find an appropriate alternative location for the club.

The next round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is expected to open within the next two weeks. After two super rounds of $100,000 this year, this will be a standard round of $35,000. Local group Clayden Potters know just how beneficial this program can be, having secured over $20,000 in a recent funding round to purchase a new kiln. This will come in very handy as the group continues to grow. They’ve been busy of late making handcrafted clay poppies, which will be soon feature in a new ‘garden of remembrance’ at Coolum Peregian RSL Club.

COOLUM NORTH SHORE COAST CARE

Some of our best and brightest students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics have recently been recognized in the 2022 Peter Doherty Awards, and it will come as no surprise that included was a student from Coolum State High.

GAMBLING FUND GRANTS

Earlier this month I got a preview of a new project that our tireless volunteers at Coolum and North Shore Coast Care are about to embark on. They recently received a $20,000 Community Sustainability Action grant from the Department of Environment for weeding activities in the Noosa National Park in conjunction with Queensland Parks and Wildlife, and Brendan Stephen from Natural Bushland Ecology. I caught up with them at the Peregian section of the national park, which will be targeted along with other northern locations. I can’t speak highly enough of these environmental warriors who are so passionate about preserving and protecting our natural areas. They are always on the lookout for more volunteers, so if you’ve got some time on your hands and want to make a positive contribution to our local environment, please get in touch with them!

Congratulations to Jemima Bainbridge, who took out the Outstanding ATSI Senior Stem Student award. This is an incredible achievement, given the tough competition from across the State, and is further evidence of the high standards being set at the school. Coolum High is going from strength to strength across all areas of the curriculum thanks to the hard work and dedication of the amazing teachers and support staff.

Volunteering as a family can also be very beneficial.

Children watch everything parents do and learn by example. By giving back to the community, you’ll show them first-hand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help other people. It will also help them develop their social skills, self-esteem, confidence and new skills that might not be otherwise developed.

Sadly, over the years, I have seen a steady decline in people volunteering and as a result have even seen some of them close down.Needless to say, our community is in desperate need for these groups to stay in existence as they provide a significant contribution to those underprivileged and inSocietyneed. as a whole will struggle if we lose these groups through a lack of volunteers. It is the unpaid volunteer within these groups who is the glue that holds communities together. The benefits of volunteering can be enormous. Let’s explore some. Volunteering will connect you to group of people that share a common purpose which in turn can help you to develop a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment. When engaging with a community group you will often establish friendships with people that are outside of your normal circle. They are a fantastic place to meet new people, if you are new to a community, and can help you feel connected and valued.

As a result, I’ve had the privilege to form partnerships with many of the fantastic community groups within our community.

Volunteering can be very good for your mental health and wellbeing. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological wellbeing.Bymeasuring hormones and brain activity, researchers have discovered that being helpful to others pleasure.immensedelivers
