ANOTHER ULTRA TRAIL SUCCESS

IN JUST TWO SHORT YEARS THE NOOSA ULTRA TRAIL EVENT HAS BECOME THE LARGEST TRAIL RUN EVENT IN QUEENSLAND.

Setting off at 6am from Noosa District Sports Complex on Saturday, March 25, more than 1,500 runners from all over Australia, embarked on various long-distance multiterrain races through Noosa’s stunning hinterland for the second ever Noosa Ultra Trail event.

Showcasing Noosa’s beautiful tracks through mountain ranges with ocean views, shapely volcanoes, steep ridges and tropical rainforests, Noosa local, event creator and experienced trail runner Nick Stewart, can comfortably accept that the second Noosa Ultra Trail was an outstanding success.

With five distance events to choose from competitors were able to take on the Forest (15km), Cross Country (25km), Pomona Sundowner (30km) Out ‘n’ Back (50km), Hinterland Traverse, (80km) and the ultimate challenge – the Ultra Trail (100km).

Keeping to Noosa’s sustainable practices, distance wave starts varied throughout the day ensuring the athletes were spaced out and not running in one big crowd.

Many volunteers from various local community groups were at check points, marshalling positions and water stations providing hydration products and friendly words of encouragement.

A world-first competition trail competitor, adaptive athlete Natasha Price and her coach Adam Sheppard captured the imagination of many as they crossed the finishing line completing a 10km modified version of one of the most popular rural trails.

Featured on Sunrise’s morning show with weather presenter James Torbin, live from Noosa, the pair were delighted to share

with the nation how excited they were to be compete.

Sporting Champions, Craig Alexander (5 time World Triathlon Champion) and Kellie Angel, (3 time World Trail Running Champion) both stepped over the start line with first timers, Justine and Julan Gibson, who were taking on a 50km trail run for the first time.

Keen to complete the trail within the allocated times, they took sci fi audio books for company, whilst also replying to their teenage family at home who sent words of encouragement alongside useful texts like: “Where’s the bread?!”

Following them on the onetime tracker attached to each runner’s shoe, their family were delighted to see them return in time to receive their well-deserved medal.

Despite some humidity, the conditions on Noosa’s Biosphere trails hinterland were perfect.

Athletes are encouraged to take essentials with them. Fortunately cold and wet weather gear were not required, but torches for those on the 100 km Ultra Trail were a must.

For loved ones waiting at the festival venue entertainment was on hand with free yoga stretch classes, wildlife experts with Arlo, a

eucalyptus crunching five-year-old koala. There were also local beers, wines and crepes with shaded tables and beanbags, keeping the vibe relaxed.

Following a sell-out inaugural event in 2022 Noosa Ultra Trail has become the largest trail run competition in Queensland.

With 2023’s success, this family run event, with Nick at the helm along with his father and wife Jilly taking on multiple roles, pre, post and during the event, they can sit back and enjoy a long sip of success from one of their beautifully engraved winner’s wineglasses.

BAIT BALL SHUTS COAST BEACHES

THE INCREASED CHANCES OF SHARK ACTIVITY PROMPTED THE BEACHES TO BE CLOSED RECENTLY AS THOUSANDS OF BAIT FISH FLOATED CLOSE TO SHORE.

The March heatwave, along with calm oceans, brought many locals to the beaches recently to enjoy much needed cooling off, but what brought alarm to some, yet comfort to others was a large school of bait fish forming a tight ball making their way along the coast, followed by a host of marine life including a shiver of sharks.

Whilst most locals are comfortable understanding that the ocean is the local habitat for sharks, their reputation as a danger to swimmers and ocean goers encouraged the closing down of various beaches while the wildlife moved through.

For some avid photographers, novices mobile phone owners and competent drone users, the footage of the large clouds of bait fish proved to be very informative when posted on local social media sites.

While the bait balls are not always this size, or as close to the shore, they are very normal at this time of year

Bait fish balls are understood to mean a healthy coastal environment and can consist of various species such as pilchards and sprats amongst other small fish, who group together for safety in numbers and are a natural and critical part of marine food chains.

However, bait balls can also attract a range of predators, including various shark breeds which can be alarming for many surfers and beach goers.

To assist in educating Noosa locals and visitors, Noosa World Surfing Reserve have posters and information cards in Noosa’s Information Centre’s, depicting when sharks are at their most active throughout the

year and the reasons why. One of the most informative water safety procedures is to not swim in the river after heavy rain as some sharks (like bull sharks) prefer to hunt in murky waters.

It is comforting to learn that much shark behaviour is monitored with drones as part of the SharkSmart program with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and that our beaches after movements such as bait balls are monitored closely. Whilst shark bites are rare, it is also important to avoid swimming at dawn and dusk.

For swimmers, underwater predators are in the forethoughts of bathers, however the biggest dangers our oceans poses are ourselves. We are reminded regularly to swim during patrolled hours, between the flags as the most significant danger in our oceans is drowning. YOUTH CRIME STILL A BIG ISSUE

COMMUNITY SAFETY BILL DEBATE

How the year is flying by! The latest Parliamentary sitting was quite intense, with the debate on the Strengthening Community Safety Bill to address youth crime demonstrating how frustrated we all are, and I think my speech said it all?

COOLOOLA GREAT WALK ISSUE

In an Adjournment speech, I spoke of recent concerns regarding the conflict between First Nations people in relation to the Cooloola Great Walk, and have requested that any final approvals not be issued until this has been resolved. Bringing Kabi Kabi back to their country should not be negatively accompanied by what seems to be questions on Native Title and other processes, and as part of the ‘truth telling’ at the start to Path to Treaty, these questions must be addressed.

SLOW DOWN ON NORTH SHORE

The Teewah Cooloola Working Group met last Friday to view proposed changes to address the issues impacting this area. After four years of hard advocacy to get to the ‘pointy end’ we look forward to sharing what will be implemented immediately, and those that will take longer through legislative change. With Easter coming up and secured extra resources, spread the word that there is a zero tolerance approach to anyone doing wrong by our community whether speeding, driving on dunes, hooning or any other unacceptable behaviour.

LAND VALUES GOING UP

The new land valuations for the Noosa electorate have been released, and it is not good news for those already having financial difficulties, with many households seeing an increase in their land values, which can see an increase in their rates. We have posted to 360 further information, as well details if you

require a review of your property.

YARN THANKS

On a lighter front, it was wonderful to speak at the opening of the Indigenous Yarning Circle at Sunshine Beach State High School, which is another step of greater inclusivity and understanding, hence the name Wan’din’y which means ‘Gathered Together’.

FREE BUSES ARE BACK FOR EASTER

NOOSA COUNCIL’S FREE HOLIDAY BUS PROGRAM IS BACK FOR THE EASTER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

The Go Noosa Free Holiday Buses will again be servicing the Noosa Shire, including our Eastern Beaches strip from Peregian Beach to Noosa Junction, from April 1 to 16.

Mayor Clare Stewart said whether you are travelling for work or for recreation, the free holiday bus services offer a fun and stress-free way to travel around the Shire.

“Head down to the Peregian Beach markets on the hourly 064 service, plan a day trip to the hinterland on the 632 service to disvoer a new walking trail or clim Mt Cooroora, stop by the Noosa River on the way to Tewantin on the 626 or 627,” Mayor Stewart said.

The best bit about the bus, is there’s no need to drive around in loops to find a car park at Noosa Heads if you’re looking to go to Main

Beach or Hastings St.

“Residents and staff can avoid the stress and time of having to look for a car park in the busy Hasting Street precinct by hopping on board the free bus service,” Mayor Stewart said. “The more people who choose to park and ride or leave their car at home, the better the traffic will be, which will speed up the bus trip.”

An electric bus will run the 065 loop every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm and every 30 minutes from 7pm to 10pm every day but the public holidays, where it will run its normal schedule.

In other good news for tourists and locals alike, the Noosa Parade pathway upgrade has provided new on-road bike lanes and wider shared paths.

BIG WIN AT ADELAIDE FESTIVAL

THE SUNSHINE COAST’S VERY OWN ALLI POPE AND HER TROUPE OF PERFORMERS HAVE TAKEN OUT A TOP GONG AT THE ADELAIDE FRINGE FESTIVAL.

Jally Entertainment’s Snow White and the Seven Cool Dudes show took home the Best Kids & Family Award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

It’s a big win for a Sunshine Coast theatre group in a festival known to be the second largest arts festival in the world, incorporating 1200 acts and an audience of more than one million people.

The stage show is based on a children’s book Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes written by Alli and illustrated by Ziggy Moskwa of Adelaide.

It’s a book Alli wrote with her grandchildren Noah and Grace in mind. A story of kindness featuring messages about keeping fit and making healthy food choices.

For Alli and her husband John (Jally) the win is the latest accolade in a long and varied partnership that includes Alli acting in Neighbours and Blue Heelers in the 1980s and

a long stint where they both worked as owner operators of Lazuli Blue Coffee shop in Noosa Junction in between touring theatre shows around the country.

Jally Entertainment has grown to the point where they now tour back-to-back productions across Australia aimed at both adults and children.

For the children, Alli has taken some inspiration from classic fairytales, producing a series of shows including Rumplelstiltskin, Noah and the Ark, Aladdin and his magic i-Pod, The Little Mermaid and Friends, Little Red in the Hood, Cinderella Spinderella and Goldilocks Rocks.

In good news for locals Jally Productions will be bringing their award winning show back to Noosa for one show only at The J on Friday, April 14 at 11am, starring other locals including Luke Lanham and Emily Potts.

The show will then head over to Western Australia for a 5-week tour from Perth to Broome, then onto regional Victoria and NSW for the following school holidays.

Tickets for the Noosa production are available online at www.thej.com.au.

SHORT STAY RULES RE-EVALUATED

A RESOURCING BOOST WILL HELP FINE-TUNE NOOSA COUNCIL’S REGULATION OF SHORT-STAY PROPERTIES FOLLOWING A REVIEW OF THE SHORT-STAY LOCAL LAW, INTRODUCED A YEAR AGO.

Owners of more than 2500 properties being used for short-stay accommodation have now applied for approval under the new Short-stay Local Law.

Noosa Council says it has appointed two new temporary compliance officers who will help work through a backlog of short-stay applications, increase enforcement and identify unapproved short-stay properties.

The cost of their appointment will be covered by short-stay property annual renewal fees.

Mayor Clare Stewart said the Local Law’s first 12 months had been a success.

“We’re the first council in Queensland to regulate short-stay accommodation in response to community concerns, and we’re making solid progress,” she said.

“With the Local Law, approval process and complaints hotline, we’ve been able to implement a code of conduct for short-stay guests, compile a healthy database of shortstay properties, deal with complaints and begin to identify owners not playing by the rules.

“About 2500 property owners have applied in the first 12 months, which is a good result.

“Mornington Peninsula set a strong benchmark achieving 2500 in just under three years, so given we’ve achieved that in a third of the time we’re doing very well.”

With the high number of applications being lodged, Mayor Stewart said Council was comfortable with the level of compliance with the new Local Law so far, however there are still around 1200 properties that are yet to apply for approval.

“It’s been an informative 12 months with lots of stakeholder engagement. I’ve sat down

with many residents to discuss their concerns, and the extra resourcing will not only support greater enforcement, but it answers industry calls for a quicker approval process.

“We said we’d review the Local Law after 12 months and make tweaks and we’re doing it.”

Environment and Sustainable Development Director Kim Rawlings said in addition to assessing more than 2000 short-stay applications, staff are working through 600 more.

“We received the early flurry of applications as we temporarily waived the application fee, and while the influx highlighted a need for more resources, it’s been a good response so far,” she said.

“There is still work to be done, but the extra resourcing will assist the approval process and allow us to better enforce the rules, as the community expects,” the Mayor added.

In its first 12 months the 24-hour complaints hotline answered 612 calls.

Short-stay annual renewal fees will be set at $400 for detached houses and $200 for units, with a reduced $100 fee for home-hosted accommodation and units and houses where the planning scheme limits short-stay use to a maximum of four times a year and 60 days.

THE BOOKWORM'S BIG DAY OUT

THE ANNUAL ROTARY NOOSA DAYBREAK BOOKFEST EVENT IS BACK FOR 2023

Basketball courts will be replaced with tables overflowing with books at Noosa Leisure Centre from April 28 to 30 as Rotary Noosa Daybreak puts on its biggest fundraiser of the year.

The annual Bookfest Noosa event is the culmination of a year’s worth of work by members who have been collecting and sorting secondhand book donations.

There will be tens of thousands of books available for purchase over the three days and the proceeds will be dedicated to local projects including the homeless.

Noosa Daybreak president Ken Kipping said the majority of the money raised would go to the local area.

“This year we will focus on continuing our work with the homeless in the Noosa Shire and nearby surrounds," Ken said.

Previously funds raised from Bookfest have supported new treatments for suicidality, facilities for Noosa Coastguard, support for the local programs for the Salvation Army, research into treatments for Prostate Cancer.

Local organisations supported by Bookfest

include Sunshine Butterflies, Hear and Say Centre, Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club, Childhood Cancer Support, Noosa Hospital, Sunshine Coast Rescue Helicopter, University of the Sunshine Coast, and a number of organisations providing support for youth in the Noosa region.

Support for flood relief has been a priority in recent years and significant contributions have been made to individuals and organisations affected by the floods in the Noosa Shire.

Mental health awareness and treatment has also been supported directly and in partnership with other Rotary Clubs and The University of the University of the Sunshine Coast Thompson Institute.

"I encourage all keen local readers and those that love their books to come along to Bookfest to buy from the huge range of books available on every conceivable topic,” Ken said.

“All books have been thoroughly sorted and only the best quality books will be offered for sale at $3 each. Childrens books will be sold at $1.”

LOVERS OF CLASSIC COLLECTIBLES FROM HOMEWARES TO FASHION AND BEYOND WILL BE EXCITED TO KNOW THE VIVA LA VINTAGE MARKET IS BACK.

The Imperial Hotel in Eumundi will play host to thousands of treasures from 9am to 1pm on Sunday, April 23, upstairs in the Brewery space.

Viva La Vintage coordinator Lisa Williment said it was exciting to be curating the first event for 2023.

“It’s a terrific place for a relaxed Sunday browse,” Lisa said.

“We’re especially excited to welcome back Aurelie from My French Finds, with a fresh container delivery of authentic Vintage treasures that are always highly coveted.”
