BUSHFIRE SEASON IS HERE

We are already in August, which means the Sunshine Coast bushfire season is here. The Councils have been getting ready by doing hazard reduction burns across the coast

Sunshine Coast Council’s Disaster Management

Lead Wayne Sunderland is encouraging all residents to

familiarise themselves with understanding fire weather and how to prepare and protect your family and your property.

Although bushfires can happen at any time of the year, Sunshine Coast’s peak time is during late spring to early summer, with danger increasing after a dry winter.

Hot days with strong dry westerly winds are the worst conditions along the coast.

During these times even green foliage and large trees can become dry and flammable.

FROM THE ED'S DESK

HELLO COMMUNITY,

Welcome to our August edition of our cherished community magazine.

Raise your hand if you’re as excited as I am for the last month of winter! If you’re new here you might feel like the winter is really mild, but wait a few years & trust me it starts to feel a whole lot colder. Besides, who likes waking up in the dark to exercise anyway? We want to see the beauty of our surroundings when we’re out and about, right? Well, the promise of Spring is upon us, & it’s encouraging to know we are on the road to bid farewell to winter. Although, there is no disputing that

winter on the Coast, has its own charm, with cozy evenings by the fireplace, or the sights of misty mornings hugging the mountains, & indulging in food that warms the body and soul. We truly do live in a beautiful place, it’s hard to find reasons to complain right? This month’s issue is filled with heart-warming tales of compassion, some useful insights and opportunities to support local.

Thank you for being a part of our journey and for your continued support. Wishing you a radiant August filled with warmth, growth, and cherished moments.

Warmest Regards,

You are more prone to bushfires if you live within a few kilometres of bushland. Have trees and shrubs within 20 metres of your home, and if your home is built on a slope.

OPERATION WANTED

PET DESEXING CAMPAIGN

Noosa Council is supporting the RSPCA’s Operation Wanted campaign to provide Noosa residents with discounted pet desexing until August 31.

Book your pet in and secure your 20% discount. You can receive the discounted pet desexing from participating vets.

Operation Wanted is an annual desexing initiative in collaboration with local council, veterinary clinics and RSPCA Queensland.

The desexing is of cats and dogs only. Desexing involves an operation to permanently remove their ability to reproduce.

Each pet will receive a check-up to ensure they are healthy enough to undergo surgery.

The pet will be given a general anaesthetic so that they sleep throughout the procedure.

Surgery on animals has the same high standards as surgery on humans, so your pet will be in very capable hands.

Surgery is generally a day surgery but can be dependent on your pets age and medical condition. Sometimes a pet may need to stay overnight.

Pet desexing removes the risk of unwanted litters. By desexing it reduces your registration

costs, reduces a pet’s desire to roam, helps curb aggressive behaviour in dogs and spraying behaviour in cats.

Your pet will be happier and healthier, as it is known to reduce the risk of some cancers. Your pet will be less likely to get diseases such as urine infections, mammary and ovarian diseased in females and perineal hernias, testicular and prostate cancer in males.

On a larger scale, by preventing unwanted litters, you are ensuring less pets end up at the local animal shelters or council pounds, and sometimes these pets are unable to find their forever home.

NOOSA SAFETY & UNITYWATER UPDATES

ADDRESSING CRIME AND VIOLENCE CONCERNS IN NOOSA

In response to concerns raised that crime and alcohol fuelled violence has escalated in Noosa, we have posted to Noosa 360 data and information including that whilst Noosa has a full complement of officers with 24/7 manned station and patrols, mobile police beat and highway patrols that operate random breath tests and speed enforcement operations, the reality is that they cannot be everywhere at once. Hence, it is important for us all to be their ‘eyes’ and report any suspicious or bad behaviour immediately in efforts of prevention. Please lodge via 000 (emergencies) or Policelink on 131 444 (non-emergencies) or online at www. police.qld.gov.au/policelink-reporting. We continue to advocate for increased police resourcing throughout Queensland during the State Budget Estimates processes, as well mandatory and relocation sentencing, and at any time should there be a change in crime trends in our community, we immediately seek extra resources as we have done on a number of occasions which lead to specific responses such as ‘Operation Sandstorm’. Information on policing in Noosa is available at www.SandyBolton.com/Policing-in-NoosaJuly-2023.

NEW WASTEWATER PRICING STRUCTURE AND COLLABORATION WITH UNITYWATER FOR COMMUNITY WELFARE

On the Unitywater front, a reminder for our businesses that the new pricing structure for wastewater has now come into effect, and as part of a staged approach, the first bill includes 50% of the increases. Should any of our small businesses in the Tier 1 category be impacted adversely, please email us on noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au so we can raise

this with the Minister for Small Business to see impacts mitigated. Even though matters relating to Unitywater do not come under the jurisdiction of State Government, we can advocate for other forms of relief. Regarding Burgess Creek, Noosa Council and Unity Water are working together on this as readings degrade as released water moves past contributors such as households and roads, and we look forward to the findings with further information posted to Noosa 360 (www.SandyBolton.com/Noosa360), simply search ‘Unitywater’.

DROP BY OUR MOBILE OFFICES

With so much to report and limited space, please stay updated via Noosa 360 with information on a range of critical issues we are working on. In addition, follow ‘Sandy Bolton MP’ on Facebook to receive information as soon as available and don’t forget to subscribe to our e-newsletter at www.SandyBolton.com/ Newsletters which will also ensure you receive Noosa related polling, which includes coming up on the Cooloola Great Walk Ecotourism Project. SWOOPING SEASON SAFETY

address potential worsening scenarios.

Magpies, protected under the Nature Conservation Act, cannot be harmed without penalties.

Magpies are recognized for their intelligence and iconic status in Australia. They possess remarkable abilities, such as recognizing individual faces and identifying people by clothing.

HOW TO STAY SAFE DURING SWOOPING BIRDS SEASON

During the native bird breeding season from July to November, encountering defensive birds like magpies, plovers, masked lapwings, magpie larks, and butcher birds can be challenging.

The protective behavior of these birds can lead to swooping, prompting Sunshine Coast Council to provide essential advice for safety.

Sunshine Coast Council Conservation Officer Kate Hofmeister explained that the swooping behavior is a temporary response to perceived threats to their nests and young, occurring for about six to eight weeks.

Male magpies, for example, swoop to safeguard their territory and offspring. The council urges people to show tolerance towards these native birds while walking or cycling near their nests.

Quick movement through the area is advised, but running is seen as a threat. Cyclists should dismount and walk their bikes, preferably in groups, and avoid aggressive actions like swinging at the birds, which can escalate defensive behaviors.

Council takes a proactive approach to managing defensive bird situations. Ms. Hofmeister mentioned that the council’s response involves assessing the situation, installing signage to caution pedestrians about temporary defensive behaviors, and closely monitoring the birds’ behavior to

These birds often remain in a single area for decades, with only a small percentage of breeding males engaging in swooping behavior. Unlike their hopping relatives, magpies walk and tilt their heads to detect prey movement underground. The birds are dedicated parents, caring for their young for an extended period.

To report defensive bird situations and request warning signage, residents can contact the Council with location details and bird species.

The Council’s comprehensive information about defensive birds can be found on their website, under ‘defensive birds’: www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/environment/ native-animals/defensive-birds.

As the breeding season approaches, understanding and respecting these protective behaviors are crucial for peaceful coexistence between humans and native birds.

SISTERS OF INDIA

PAYING IT FORWARD

In January 2023 Sharon Stevens, embarked on a fabrics tour of India, where she found herself in Gujarat.

A state along the Western Coast of India. This is where she heard the sad story about Suman, a woman rescued from a life of prostitution.

It was a story that not only struck an emotional chord, but resonated with her, and prompted her on a journey to provide support and empower Surat with “Wings to Fly”!!

Suman has since created beautiful handcrafted recycled Saree Bags.

A unique concept whereby, the gorgeous materials which feature an array of patterns & colours, are in essence up-cycled, individually combined, and transformed into a light & easy bag. A bag which is super easy & convenient to slip into your handbag or pocket, for that last minute shopping trip.

Sharon requested 200 of these bags be sent over to her here on the Coast, by her friend Nirav. Nirav rescued Suman from prostitution and has in the past 3 months, rescued another 6 ladies with similar horrific stories of what they’ve endured, these ladies are referred to as the “Sisters of India”.

Nirav has provided these ladies with not only safety, but a roof over their heads, and a source of income producing these Saree recycled products.

These recycled Saree’s would normally end up in landfill, so their efforts are assisting to reduce waste, increase sustainability and support those in need. Nirav ensures the Sisters receive a % of the profits as well as a weekly wage.

Thanks to our gorgeous generous community the first 200 bags sold like hot cakes! Sharon was able to set up a display table at the Noosa Daybreak Bookfest, a 3-day event, whereby 50% of the proceeds went to support the Rotary Clubs Homeless appeal.

Which was a double win for those in need Sharon has been working closely with Nirav and the Sisters over the past month and they now have Furoshiki gift wraps arriving this month.

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in fabric. They have developed an Indian version using the recycled Saree’s. These wraps come in 4 different sizes and can be regifted once they are originally used.

Another multi-use, up-cycled material. Her goal for the “Sisters of India” is to provide a regular source of support for the Sisters, in the form of providing much needed equipment to assist them in maintaining an income.

Recently with the help of a generous local Peregian Springs family, they were able to buy a new sewing machine for the business.

Through Sharon’s support network, she has been able to provide demonstrations to individuals along the Coast of Furoshiki gift wrapping. The response to these products has been overwhelming and her aim is to do regular demonstrations.

The recycled Saree bags sell for $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00 – Furoshiki wraps are a similar price. The beautiful Homewares store at Cotton Tree called Coast, is stocking the Recycled Saree Bags and she hopes to find some more stockists along the Coast.

To purchase or view any of these products, or simply to support the cause, please get in touch with Sharon sistersofindia@gmail.com

NEW NAME, SAME CARE

RENAMING TO REFLECT ONGOING DEDICATION TO SENIOR SUPPORT

Noosa Community Support is changing its name and its brand, but the level of service and care for Noosa Seniors will remain the same. The new name will be Noosa Seniors, which comes into effect on August 14 this year.

As the hub to support seniors, it’s operated under the name of Noosa Community Support since 2015, but the name change is to better reflect who we provide our core support and services to.

Noosa Seniors coordinator Justin Morgan said the change aims to heighten awareness of the organisation’s primary purpose.

“We exist to provide a way to connect with and support our seniors in the Noosa Shire to be active and lead independent lives,” he said.

“We continue to evolve as an organisation and the name change is more contemporary to help clearly articulate what we do and why we are here,” he said.

“The inclusion of “seniors” in our name aims to make it easier for clients and those in our shire to find and connect with us, but also to help the community understand what we do.

“We want Noosa Seniors to be recognised as the central hub of senior support in our

The new name comes into effect on August 14.

community,” Mr Morgan said.

Mr Morgan said the name change in no way impacts on our unwavering commitment to deliver exceptional services in liaison with the Noosa Council team.

“We are part of the Council family so the same high standards of quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction that clients have come to expect will continue,” he said.

Noosa Seniors operates under the management of Noosa Council and the organisation strives to support seniors to lead an independent, active and fulfilling life.

Noosa Seniors will continue to provide in-home care in the form of personal care, support with shopping and cleaning, provide appropriate group activities that keep seniors connected, home maintenance and modifications, podiatry services and transport to attend medical appointments.

Noosa Seniors will continue to operate from its convenient location at 11 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, and can be reached by phone at (07) 5329 6175. For more information, please visit the website. www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ noosa-seniors

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH FOSTER CARE

A PASSIONATE FOSTER CARER PROVIDING SAFE HAVENS FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

From the moment Mel Luck picked up her phone to chat about why she does what she does when it comes to looking after children in need her passion for the cause shone through. That cause is child protection, and since 2014 Mel has offered emergency and foster care support to children in need. She’s one of 6,000 families in Queensland who work with child protection agencies every day to provide safe havens for children who can no longer live safely in their own family environment for reasons ranging from substance abuse to domestic and sexual violence.

Despite the challenges of this complex area and the stories she has heard from the mouths of the children she has cared for over the years, Mel said since becoming involved in caring, her only regret was that she hadn’t started sooner.

‘Now doing it, it would have been fantastic for my kids to have been involved,’ she said. Mel has always loved helping children be the best they can, particularly on the hockey field, where she coached for more than 40 years.

Through hockey and her own children, the

56-year-old said her house had been full of kids who would gravitate there as a safe place to chat and hang out with their friends. When her children left home, she started to look at how she could help other children in need. ‘My kids are grown, I am single and opening my old Queenslander up to these gorgeous kids has been one of the best decisions of my life,’ Mel said.

‘Over the years it has evolved into accommodating permanent teenagers and providing emergency care for kids who may need a bed for a few days or weeks, to regular respites for kids who all become such a wonderful part of your family. ‘I wouldn’t change my years of fostering for anything in the world. I absolutely love meeting new kids and having the opportunity to welcome them into a warm, safe environment. ‘It’s such a privilege to be able to touch these kids’ lives and hopefully, when they leave, they have a few more life skills to help them along the way.’
