Christmas carols are back at Peregian Beach for the 57th year!

THE CAROLS ARE BACK! SANTA IS SET TO MAKE A TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO PEREGIAN BEACH ON DECEMBER 22 THANKS TO THE WORK OF LOCAL BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS.

Peregian Beach Business Association and Peregian Family and Friends, with the backing of Noosa Council, have put together plans for Christmas Carols in Peregian Park from 3pm to 8pm on the Wednesday before Christmas Day. The previous gold coin donation per person will be replaced by a $10 per framily entry fee for which visitors will have access to live music and carols from local bands and soloists, food and artisan stalls, a visit from Santa and his Eastern Beaches News - December 2021

Elves at 5.30pm and a spectacular light show at the end of the night as a grand finale. Peregian Family and Friends President Leigh McCready said the two organisations were working with event managers Events Cartel and Key Elements to ensure the event ran smoothly. Ms McCready said while last year there was a small Carols event at the Surf Club due to the COVID related restrictions on numbers, it was great to be able to bring it back to the park and to be able to invite the whole community. For further information about the event, to become a sponsor, or to buy tickets search Peregian Beach Carols 2021 on Facebook or go to https://events.humantix. com/peregian-beach-carols-2021.

FROM THE ED’S DESK WHEN THIS EDITION HITS THE STREETS IT WILL BE LESS THAN 20 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS DAY.

As a family with school-aged children, this time of year means a break for us from school, a bit of a break from work, and a chance to catch up and refresh for the year ahead. While I’m certainly looking forward to that personally, I also appreciate that while we might venture out as a family to a cafe, restaurant, or retail shop during our `holiday’ there will be someone else there not getting a break, serving up the food or the goods with a smile. To those people, I say thanks in advance for giving up your time to make our experience a little brighter. In an area where the tourist dollar brings a big bonus for businesses every year, it’s

important for us locals to be understanding of the extra pressure these peak times put on our front line staff, to be patient, and to do our bit to support them however we can. To those visitors to the area, we say welcome too. It’s an honour to think that of all the places in Queensland you could have chosen to visit, our little bit of paradise has caught your eye. Have a great stay! This December edition for Eastern Beaches News marks our second Christmas in the market. A big thank you to the businesses who have supported the publication along the way and to our contributors and readers who have been in touch to let us know about stories they’d like to read or write about. We’re always keen to share local news with our Eastern Beaches readers and I’d look forward to working with you all again in 2022. Have a great Christmas and New Year! Geoff

NEWS IN BRIEF

FIRE LIGHTER TO SERVE COMMUNITY

ONE of the three teens alleged to have been involved in the lighting of fires that led to the 2019 Peregian Beach bushfires has been found guilty for “wilfully” and “unlawfully” setting fire to plants at Peregian Springs. The Coolum 17-year-old girl, who was 15 years old at the time of the incident, was given 80 hours community service by Judge Gary Long, to be completed within 12 months. NOOSA LIBRARY CHRISTMAS HOURS

BOOKWORMS take note. The good staff of the Noosa Council Libraries will be taking a well earned break over Christmas and the Noosaville and Cooroy libraries will be closed from 2.30pm on Friday, December 24 and will re-open on Tuesday, January 4. FREE CHRISTMAS BUSES

THE temporary Route 064 bus from Peregian Beach to Noosa will be reinstated from December 11 to January 23, 2022 as part of the annual free Christmas holiday bus system in Noosa Shire. The bus leaves, heading northbound, on the hour from 7.32am at Peregian Beach South, through until 5.32pm. The last bus back leaves Noosa Heads at 6pm nightly. CHRISTMAS APPEAL IS OPEN

THE 2021 Mayoral Christmas appeal has been launched in Noosa. To be involved the community has been asked to buy a gift for a family in need, wrap it up, label and drop it off at Tewantin Noosa RSL or Noosa Council. A key message this year is to think about buying vouchers from local businesses to not only support local families in need, but also local business owners still recovering from the COVID challenges of this year. TREE CHANGE IN THE SQUARE

A large Cottonwood Tree was removed from Peregian Beach Village Square in late November by Noosa Council after an arborist assessed it as being in danger of 4

toppling over given the unbalanced nature of its root system. Council has sourced a 100 litre Tuckeroo Tree to plant in the place of the Cottonwood Tree which will eventually provide shade to that corner of the square. CHRISTMAS CONVOY ROUTE

THE annual Christmas convoy that sees Santa visit streets in our neghbourhoods along with friends from the emergency services, will take place on the eastern beaches from 4pm on Thursday, December 9. The convoy starts at the Peregian Beach Surf Club and will make its way north along David Low Way, diverting along Currawong Crescent, Podargus Parade, Spoonbill Street, Kestrel Crescent, Lowry Street, Persimmon Drive, Mahogany Drive, Wavecrest Drive, Orient Drive, Victory Crescent, Comet Drive, Wollomia Way, Dame Patti Drive, Southern Cross Parade, Ben Lexcen Drive, Grasstree Court, Bicentennial Drive, Cooyar Street, Sunshine Beach Rd, Noosa Drive and Hastings Street. WATCH OUT FOR TURTLES

THE first green turtle to hit the beach and have its nest spotted by keen wildlife lovers this season landed just south of Peregian Beach village in the last week of November. Coolum and North Shore Coast Care were on hand to mark the nest and measure the distance from it back to the beach for research purposes. Everyone is encourage turn off outdoor lights and dim other lights after 8pm from November to February to assist the turtles in finding their way back to the water after laying eggs, and for the hatchlings, after being hatched. SUPPORT THE SALVOS THIS YEAR

WITH a target of $3 million the Salvation Army has launched its annual Christmas Appeal. Last Christmas the Salvos provided more than 64,000 hampers across the country and gave out more than 26,000 gifts to families in need. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH WIDE BAY MP LLEW O’BRIEN

BEST WISHES FOR CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS IS A TIME OF PEACE AND GOODWILL, AND THIS YEAR, THOSE VALUES TAKE ON EVEN MORE IMPORTANCE AS WE FACE THE PROSPECT OF COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS CONTINUING TO AFFECT OUR COMMUNITY.

Vaccination is the most important protection measure we have against the health, social and economic implications of further COVID-19 outbreaks. But we also must respect every person’s choice. Looking back, it was two years ago when the devastating bushfires hit Noosa and the recovery effort is still ongoing. The Australian Government continuing to support the environmental recovery by committing $165,768 to Noosa & District Landcare Group for a range of projects throughout Noosa to assist with the revegetation of natural habitats and eradication of weeds to protect and conserve local flora and fauna. Businesses in Noosa were only starting to rebound from the fires when COVID-19

hit and the best way we can support local businesses now is by shopping locally this festive season. Whether it’s loading up your Christmas table with locallygrown produce and fresh seafood caught just off the Coast; a last-minute present from the boutique down the street; or picking up a gift voucher for dinner at a nearby restaurant, buying locally is a great way of giving back to your community. When you support local small businesses and Aussie producers, it makes a big difference to our local economy, and it is the number one way you can back local jobs. Buying local goods and services is the best prescription for a healthy Wide Bay economy. Best wishes for a happy Christmas and safe and prosperous New Year.

TENNIS HOT SHOTS THE WINNERS PREPPIES AT SUNSHINE BEACH STATE SCHOOL HAVE PLENTY TO CHEER ABOUT WITH NEW TENNIS RACQUETS TO PLAY WITH.

A partnership between ANZ and Tennis Australia’s School Partnership Program saw more than 100 students provided to children in the Prep Year. Sunshine Beach State School Physical Education Teacher Cameron Porter said the school had been involved in the program for several years and found that the inclusion of smaller courts, lighter racquets and low compression balls made tennis fun and easy to 14

learn for the children. Noosa Tennis Centre’s Jake McMahon delivered the racquets to the school and followed up with a tennis coaching lesson to help the children learn to use them. easternbeachesnews.com.au

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH NOOSA MP SANDY BOLTON

COVID CONTINUES TO CONCERN COVID CHALLENGES AHEAD

Summer has arrived, and while we get ready to spend time with our loved ones and the opening of borders, there is much to consider. This month has not been short of COVID matters with the recent announcement surrounding vaccination status from December 17, 2021. My office has contacted the Premier and Minister for Health with many questions, as well the impacts that these new restrictions will have on our community and small businesses. It was impossible to convey in a 3-minute speech the enormity of emotions, situations and broad reaching ramifications including further losses of medical services that came via hundreds of calls, texts and emails However, the message from Noosa residents, regardless of vaccination status, was clear. Unity not segregation is needed, and I relayed this during in Parliament at https://www. facebook.com/SandyBoltonNoosa/ videos/1040777366699229/ At the time of writing, residents and interstate travellers are able to apply for a new border pass which will allow them to home quarantine in Queensland after arriving from a hotspot, however you must meet the eligibility criteria. You can find more at https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/ health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/protectyourself-others/quarantine/domestic-travel TAFE SITE CHATS

Stakeholders gathered to provide feedback on the 5 shortlisted submissions for the reuse of the decommissioned Tewantin TAFE site which included education, sports, childcare/ mixed and training/arts/research. Lack of detail due made the task not easy, with many questions both unique, as well common to all. One dominant question, even though outside the scope of the task for that day, was given the site is the equivalent of 14 football 16

ovals, why can there not be a small portion of that utilised to address our accommodation crisis? As explained, this would require community and Council support, as the area outside the building envelope is covered by biodiversity overlays, and mapped as koala priority area. A big discussion and one I have started whilst due diligence is undertaken on the financial capabilities of the submitters as part of the EOI process. A preferred proponent is expected by the end of the year. RIVER HEALTH IN SPOTLIGHT

It was a pleasure to welcome Gary Crozier, the new Maritime Safety QLD Area Manager of the Sunshine Coast, to our beautiful Noosa River. We discussed various issues, including river speeds, moorings, pollution and congestion as well ensuring that the work of our Noosa River Stakeholder Advisory Committee translates to action! We should have an update shortly on the progress from NRSAC to post to Noosa 360, however if you would like to email them directly head to nrsac@noosa. qld.gov.au STAY IN TOUCH

As always there is much to share that we cannot fit in! Regular updates are posted to Noosa 360 at www.sandybolton.com, including COVID-19 FAQs, the Tewantin TAFE Site and Noosa River Advisory Group. Whilst there, subscribe to our newsletter, or join us on Facebook to keep updated. As always, email our office on noosa@parliament.qld. gov.au or phone 5319 3100 for assistance. Warmest regards and don’t forget to stay fire, storm and flood ready, and if you are vaccinating do not delay any longer as once the borders open there will be delays and possible supply issues coming with this bug. Sandy easternbeachesnews.com.au

SURF LIFE SAVING WITH JOHN RODERICK

NIPPERS NUMBERS UP OVER 200 An update on the project to re-establish an independent, community-based Surf Lifesaving Club at Peregian Beach (PBSLSC). Life Saving operations at Peregian Beach remain under the direction of Noosa Heads SLSC for the 2021/22 season. So far, patrols this season have continued along well, with volunteer Peregian patrols covering Saturdays with professional Lifeguards, funded by NHSLSC, making up the Sundays and major public holidays. Peregian volunteer lifesaving numbers and skills have not allowed the volunteer base to start taking any of the Sunday patrols back yet. A local Peregian Beach Working Group, made up of Peregian-based NHSLSC members is however, working hard in the background to ensure the new Club has a sound basis to commence independent operations from 2022/23 onwards. Pleasingly, we have seen a further increase this season in the Peregian Beach Nipper program from 165 children last season to 205 at present. It is a great sign for the future to see the enthusiasm from the parent involvement for Eastern Beaches News - December 2021

the successful Sunday programs. On the beach, we have 70 patrolling members across 5 full patrol groups with further support in the form of a 6th patrol being provided by the Brisbane Surf Lifesaving Service (part of Surf Lifesaving Queensland (SLSQ), the organisation’s governing body). Thanks to NHSLSC we are currently having new members trained to have the necessary qualifications to join our patrol teams which will enable us to expand our patrol teams and go further towards the expected full weekend coverage of volunteer surf lifesaving clubs. Under the guidance of the Working Group, the new Club is planning a rejuvenation of the social aspect of Surf Club life with Club Nights and other social gatherings over the coming months/years. We strongly encourage local community members to support these events as the task of building a new Club in such a short time frame is large and ambitious. Your involvement would be appreciated in any way. Contact us at hello@peregiansurfclub.com Cheers John Roderick 17

LOCAL NEWS

CELEBRATING THE NOOSA TRI BY FIONA EWINGTON THE 2021 NOOSA TRIATHLON TOOK PLACE OVER THE LAST WEEKEND OF OCTOBER AND WAS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS, WITH A SIGNIFICANTLY QUEENSLAND FEEL DUE TO ONGOING BOARDER RESTRICTIONS.

However, the atmosphere, enthusiasm and energy from athletes, volunteers, crew, and locals was as electric as ever, proving the Noosa community continues to rally together to show off our beautiful region. The weather played its part with almost perfect conditions when a welcomed wind change occurred, albeit a bit strong at times. The days leading up to Sunday’s main event saw temperatures soar and humidity levels peak. The Run Swim Run started the multi-sport festival where participants made the ocean swim and running in soft sand look easy prior to, for some, a full day of school. It was certainly an exhilarating way to start the day. The Asics Breakfast Fun Run saw Noosa Main Beach light up in a sea of pink as hordes of athletes dressed up to run and raise money and awareness for The Breast Cancer Foundation. The star of the morning was Alexa Leary, Noosa’s international triathlon superstar athlete, who is making an incredible recovery from a life changing bike accident. Alexa received a huge cheer when she stepped up to the mic to help start the race. Her Instagram page #MoveForLex documents her amazing story of courage whilst encouraging everyone to keep moving for those who are unable to. Super Saturday brought SuperKidz and the Tingirana Special Tri to the community, with hundreds of young triathletes making their way around the Chaplin Park course. Noosa Parade hosted the Asics Bolt and Criterium where the emphasis was on speed. 18

Complimenting the Tourism Noosa and Tourism Events Queensland brand colours were the volunteers in their uniquely designed Noosa tee-shirts. With 700 volunteers assisting in every step of the athletes’ journey from check in to the finish line and everything in between, local sports and community groups raised over $30,000 for their non-for-profit organisation. Over 70 individual volunteers provided their time, raising almost $3,000 to be donated to #MoveForLex supporting the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Sunday’s Noosa Triathlon was a wonderful event of exceptional athleticism, featuring 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run and saw first time winner of the men’s event, Luke Willian take the title and the Queen of Noosa winning her impressive eighth women’s title, Queensland’s home grown Olympian and triathlete champion, Ashleigh Gentle. LOCAL NEWS

FROM PAGE 18 With the event concluding at 2pm on Sunday and Noosa town getting back to relative normality, it is hard to believe that earlier in the day, athlete’s dreams were made on our streets and beaches. For the team of organisers, a well-deserved “cheers” was ordered and it was during the downtime that news filtered through that one of Noosa Triathlon’s key staff members, David Goodchild, AKA Goody had lost his short battle with cancer. Goody was the backbone of the Noosa Tri with a helpful smile and natural organisational skills contributing to a happy, safe and operational environment. Dressed in his Top Hat, Goody was a character who lived up to his name and is credited with working on numerous local events including fifteen Noosa Triathlons. It was the saddest news to receive after

what had been a huge sporting festival but on reflection, slightly poignant and comforting as our favourite Granddaddy of the event will always be remembered and missed on Noosa Triathlon Day.

When the time comes, we will be there for you. Personalised and caring service, appointments from your home and returning to your home.
